One of the benefits of not playing a Strat for a couple of weeks (nearly) was that I was able to bond with the Les Paul a bit more....I think I could recommend this as a method to get more used to the feeling of playing a Les Paul, if, like me you left it quite late to try one....

Now we're talking. You just can't beat the tone of a great LP.
@ChristopherOrth

Most guitarists will use a lot of words to describe why they do or don't like any given guitar, but really it all simply boils down to, "this doesn't feel like my current guitars and I am not used to it" which = bad, or "this feels like my current guitars so I like it". Same applies for amps and pedals. Guitarists are far less discerning than we would like to lead others to believe.

You should think about top-wrapping your tailpiece or raising it, as that string angle behind the bridge is quite steep.

Prefer the Les Paul over the strat for anything that requires a little ass. Have a tele now and just traded my 2017 Mexican Strat toward a 2018 Les Paul Studio. Between the tele and the les paul I have my bases covered pretty well for the average Joe.

I love your playing for how it feels and from the source and intention that I infer you expressing as you go. I enjoy it because it (hate to use the term but it's the correct one), resonates with me, rather than being just a technical contrivance to study.

Lovely playing up front! I bought my 1968 LP Custom from a friend in 1974 and it was my only guitar all thru my band days. I 1982 Roland gave me a Made in Japan (by Ibanez, I think - it came with the 300 Guitar Synth, which I demoed for them in NZ) . I pretty much used it all thru the 80's in the studio. I love both, have picked up a Mex Strat since and recently the Epi 59 Gibson 'partnership' which is lovely, and the Epi Cantrell 'Wino' Custom which I'm going to mod a bit with Monty's pick-ups.

John, you always sound great regardless of the guitar. I started on a Les Paul/SG-like Epiphone from the 70s (my dad gave me his old electric) with a flat radius and two humbuckers. Strats were weird to me for years, especially not picking on the middle pickup, and it took me a long time to find one I loved enough to buy. Now, I own 3 Strats, one of them a K-Line (thanks to you), 5 Les Pauls, and 2 Super Strats. None of them have anything in common, either in neck profiles, fretboard radii, or pickup styles. But I get along with all of them. I do have to adjust my playing a bit, but I like that each they force me to try different techniques, tones, and approaches to playing. I honestly won't buy a guitar that is too similar to one I already own for that reason.

I’m with you on overly figured tops. I think ever since veneers became common on $200-$400 guitars it’s made figuring look cheap. Figuring used to be a nice little bonus and was usually light and imperfect.

I love Les Paul’s. Initially, they didn’t love me. Took me awhile to really get good with it’s lack of ergonomics. But it’s worth it. I have 2 Gibson Les Paul Customs (‘57 reissue, Axcess w/FR), 2 PRS (Custom 24, McCarty 594), and 1 Fender American Standard Stratocaster. All great guitars. Some overlap. Some are for specific purposes. You can’t have just one!

I dug my Les Paul out this morning after pretty much not playing it for months. Truth be told I enjoyed the tones but I was struggling with the smaller frets (I'm used to jumbos on my Strats) and the frets felt a bit cramped up past the 12th fret. That said - it's beautiful and I should play it more often!

Interesting. As a longtime LP player, I'm not surprised you think the LP has more "oomph" on the bridge pickup, and up high, than the Strat! One comment on the "snobby" tops - different strokes for different folks, but I am a "connoisseur" (now THAT's snobby!) of flame and big tops, on all guitars. I'm not embarrassed to play big flame on stage! The top on yours is nice, kind of what are called "barbecue" tops because of the uniformity of the "grille" pattern, and not my fave, but yours is very nice. I hope you continue to enjoy playing a real guitar! :+)

I've been torturing myself trying to figure out how to use presets dialed in for a Les Paul and switch to my strat. I'm going to try the reverse of what you're doing... I'm going to boost 600 Hertz by 12 db and take it from there. Before I was getting somewhere using a low shelf set the 2000 Hertz and below boosted 3DB, and I was happy with the sound but it definitely wasn't the same sound. Thanks!

I always come back to strats. Had three Les Pauls and loved them initially but… Great for lead playing but too bassy on the neck pickup. And the weight. A Strat is much more twangy and dynamic. And then we have the ergonomics. Not great with a Les Paul. I much prefer the SG. Lighter, more ergonomic, more focused in the tone, less bass on the neck pickup. More twangy. More “stratty”.
@leemeyer7629
@leemeyer7629 Год назад
If the neck is bassy it's because you clearly haven't made the necessary EQ adjustments. Nothing beats a properly EQ'd Les Paul neck for lead tones imo, it just sings

I absolutely LUV the Les Paul body style but I absolutely hate ALL non-bolt-on neck guitars! So my pick is the old Warmoth Les Paul! (which I have as a pattern for all my Les Paul builds, and also have a Warmoth PRS style bolt-on pattern as well) I'm 67 and have owned all kinds and learned the hard way about guitars. Had Carvin's I loved but when I needed a fret-job had to send the whole guitar off, never again! And my bolt-on neck guitars sounded as good if not better to my ears than any of the others! and unbolting a neck and replacing it with a fresh one is just too simple! No worries about the paint getting chipped, or body getting dented, so never ever again will I buy or own a non-bolt-on neck guitar!
@ChristopherOrth
@ChristopherOrth Год назад
If anyone is still frustrated with the shit tuning stability of your Les Paul, just replace the nut (and probably bridge) and those issues disappear. Shameful of Gibson to put out a 3k guitar with such an obvious and easy issue to fix. And if you are in the market for a Les Paul Jr, buy a Reverend Sensei Jr instead. it's a far better instrument at a fraction of the price.

Building one right now with a pes trem and some pretty cool electronics I've put in other guitars. Five way switch where a tone control was and the tone control is going where the 3 way was with a push pull to cut coils to single coil. Did this for a pro and he loves it.
