Thank you for all the input you guys - looks like that’s a mostly resounding YES, scissors are essential!! lol I was in no way whatsoever saying the scissors are not great, I just personally use the knife blade for pretty much everything apart from nail cutting 🤷‍♂️

Well I'm going to disagree with you like everybody else who has commented. Although I admit that I initially discounted the scissors as being too small to be of any use I soon came around and I now find them indispensable. Size and weight constraints are not an issue with me and I'm happy to carry a Swiss champ when I'm wearing jeans. So, sorry, Swiss Army scissors are an absolute every day essential that I wouldn't be without.

Interesting thoughts. The scissors are definitely a compromise on the opening tools but for me they are so useful for safer cutting (eg when my kids are already wearing the thing I need to cut the label off from) that I do consider them essential, as is the knife. So a multi tool with both is my go-to. Unless a slim form factor is a key consideration and then I take something like my bantam Alox.

Scissors on pocket knives and such are sooooo dumb! almost useless. The "best" reasons I've ever heard are things you 'd still use a knife for. The only exception being clipping a hangnail!? hmmm. I'd rather bring a small nail clipper to actually do the job, because a pair of scissors on that will be no better than my teeth. And which nancies really need to trim their mustaches with a pocket knife scissors when camping?! But.... If you're at home, go get a real pair of scissors or use your clippers, etc! I think I should have left the "of scissors" off of the last sentence 😆

Ha ha ha! I love it when folks agree with my sentiment about the scissors - we are definitely in a minority judging by the majority of the comments on my video! I mean, the SAK scissors are really very good but I still maintain they’re not ESSENTIAL!! Whereas a knife blade IS essential!

Had a Spartan, given to me by my dad (RIP), living in my pocket from the time I was a kid to the time I sadly lost it in my forties. Went to get another one, but the closest thing the local shop had to the Spartan was a Compact. Thought I'd give it a try, and it was a REVELATION! The pen is incredibly useful, but the scissors! THE SCISSORS! I even really like the combo tool! Feels more natural to cut open a can “towards me” vs “away from me”. Even though I eventually found the lost Spartan, it now lives in my safe box, and the Compact will live in my pockets until someone comes up with an even better alternative (good luck with that).
@accoutrements4469

The Compact is a good choice for general urban edc for sure, and the scissors are really excellent… I just find myself not needing them anywhere near as often as other folks say they do 🤷‍♂️ Each to their own I guess 🙂

That's a interesting story . I think the opposite? I have a compact which lives in the bottom of a drawer i never use . Hate the combo tool . I dont use the scissors much rarely away from the home so only take a scissors equipped SAK if i know i need a scissors? My day to day is a Recruit, Tourist or Spartan. If you are comfortable with small blades then the small blade covers most jobs . As for the can opner working with you rather than against you , absolutely? So i did a mod you might be interested in which deals with that ? Grind off the can opner bit and slightly reshape the tip this gives you a much more useful small flat head ,very good Phillips and an improved can opner , demo video . : victorinox explorer, huntsman, farmer, climber screwdriver can opener mod. And :victorinox Spartan All Blue. And : victorinox Angler Black plus scales and modification.

I agree, they (big) scissors often are not needed, but I think your best point is actually the criticism of the Compact. 1 - To me the Compact is overpriced. 2 - I find the 58mm scissors far more useful. 3 - the pen function of the 58mm is far more practical and ergonomical with the combo tool out than 91mm hack to hold the pen. 4 - The 58mm Combo tool is far better then the 91mm Combo tool. 5 - I also agree that the 91mm Combo tool is less useful than the opening layer tools of normal Vic SAKs. I needed quite a long time to appreciate and experience the cap lifter and can opener as very practical and useful tools, but not necessarily as features that the name designation suggests. I personally have used the Bantam Alox as main blade in combination with a Minichamp. The Bantam Alox is amazingly thin and lightweight. But.. I rarely used the Combo tool and I missed the dedicated tools of the opening layer. You are right, the Cadet is the more practical tool compared to the Compact! Currently I went a step further: the Minichamp became my main SAK. Only occasionally do I couple it with a 91mm Ranger or Handyman. I found that the Minichamop is more than good enough for my urban EDC kit coupled with screwdriver tools as well as a Knipex XS.

Are scissors essential? I’d say yes to solve those little day to day annoyances - fingernails, nose and moustache hairs. I carry an alox classic sd on my keys, it’s so tiny and light it’s a no brainer for me. Scissors on a 91mm SAK however I don’t think are essential at all, I find the smaller 58mm much for useful and convenient. I don’t worry about having the classic on my keys when entering a pub for example. Hopefully most bouncers, security etc would have the sense to see it’s not a weapon haha!
@accoutrements4469
@accoutrements4469 4 месяца назад
I quite agree about entering pubs and things with a 58mm vs something larger - feels more and more like carrying a SAK of any kind is becoming less and less acceptable (nanny state, etc., etc.). Also agree about finding the smaller 58mm scissors better for nail and rogue hair trimming 👍
@robduncan599
@robduncan599 4 месяца назад
Absolutely! The SAK scissors is fantastic for sure but do we need it in a every dad to day carry tool ? I generally have plenty SAK with scissors around the house, it's not needed in your pocket everyday. My go to is the 84mm Recruit or 84mmTourist if i know I'm going to be needing a scissors then I'll take something else. But the small blade can double up as a scissors nearly all the time ? Leaving me with a decent flat head screwdriver 2 blades and a small flat head (with small mod the can opner ground off giving a better flat head with reach , and good Phillips and improved can opner ) . I rarely need a scissors in day to day use outwith the home .

Finally found someone else who agrees with me! lol Yeah, agree with all you said. I’ve found myself carrying the 84mm Sportsman or cadet recently when out and about and honestly can’t say I’ve ever had a situation where I felt I desperately needed the scissors 🤷‍♂️ Depends what your doing I suppose, as you say, but it’s fine without the scissors! 🙂

0:45 " .... best in my opinion ..." Absolutely! No other scissors comes even close! As to your title question - yet again, ABSOLUTELY! I would not even consider buying any SAK that doesn't have a scissors! Simple question to you, if you considering not having one - What would you have instead that has the same utilisation? Sorry, there isn't one (that is not there already!). My biggest sadness is the announcement by Victorinox CEO that they are actually considering making SAKs WITHOUT the knife blade. This is the response to the world woke culture that is contaminating society! It's disgusting! How can one call it a Swiss Army KNIFE if it has no knife?
@accoutrements4469

The scissors ARE really good, just not an absolute essential on a SAK for me personally ✌️ I’ve just had a look and I think it’s really sad that Victorinox are thinking of heading this way… I suppose for air travel or concert venues it might be useful at times, but it’s pathetic that the option to carry a small pocket knife is slowly being taken away from us isn’t it. One of mankind’s oldest and most useful tools!!! When you need to cut something then you need a blade: nothing else will do that job! Wanting to carry one for small tasks doesn’t make us all killers does it 😩

This missis the point ? Do you need a scissors? Well if you only have 1 SAK then maybe you do need a SAK with scissors? Only most of us have several many of them come equipped with scissors along with scissors of various sizes around the house . This is mostly about carrying in pocket, do we need a scissors day to day out and about on the off-chance we need to cut our nails? We need a small SAK with a blade a screw driver in my case a 2nd small blade that covers most scissors jobs , and a small flat /Phillips. Thats it . Sure if i need a scissors for a specific job then sure I'll take my Huntsman, Explorer, Swiss Champ or if it's a big scissors job a big proper kitchen scissors? Isn't that the point ?

Good to be getting a few comments backing up my view that scissors are not essential for edc! 👍 Sure, they can be nice to have but they’re not ESSENTIAL in an edc knife: it’s the blade which is the essential tool - nothing else serves the purposes of a blade, it’s easily my most used tool on any SAK. 👍✌️
@FiveRustyNails
@FiveRustyNails 4 месяца назад
@@accoutrements4469 But if you carry a SAK you ALWAYS have a blade anyway, it's not either or, it's whether the scissors are a worthwhile addition. Personally I'd choose scissors before corkscrew, awl, chisel, fish scaler, magnifying glass, parcel hook and quite a few other examples of Victorinox's silliness.

I think for edc scissors tasks the classic’s 58 mm performs better, specially for detailed cutting needs. So I like to pair any classic with a 2 layers at most 91 mm or mostly 84mm, I find that they really disappear in the pocket, specially combining the classic with the bantam or recruit/cadet. I do have the companion, which I find has the ideal toolset for urban edc, but mostly lives in my shelf since is 3 layers, is limited edition and mostly because it was a gift, so I carry it in special events.

"My" solution is a 58 mm model woth scissors on the keychain. Comes in handy for personal care and when a blade is not "socially acceptable". If bigger scissors are needed there are usually some to grab, in the office for example. A larger Victorinox for all other tasks in the backpack/pocket. Lately a Spartan Wood.
