The thing is that Federer's style is the most demanding and difficult to execute under pressure. Look how aggresively he played those points. He lost the same amount of matches after squandering match point and matches יhe won after saving match point. Of course he is good under pressure. You don't win 20 slams if you don't good under pressure. There are a lot of examples where he proved great mentality: AO 17, RG 09', Wimbledon 12' and USOpen 07'. Secondly, there are a lot of examples where he was clutch but still lost the match: wimbledon 08' where he came back from 2 sets to 0 down and save 3 championship points, wimbledon 14', and even wimbledon 19 where novak was up a break in the fifth.
These video's of Federer are even more enjoyable to me now since he's gone from the game. They remind us of how splendid a player he was, and how much his presence added to the sport. Well done Mr. Fed. We still LUV Ya.
That first one, I saw it live. It's one thing for Djoker to save match points but it's completely different when Fed does it with his all out attacking style.
Federer won many slams due to clutch play and mental toughness. Wimby 2007, 2009, 2012. RG 2009. AO 06 & 17, 18. Some will just remember the 40-15 chokes because it suits an agenda. That's fine
Well he is the only player to lose 2 slam semifinals and 1 slam final holding 2 match points in each case. twice on his own serve. and all to the same opponent. He didn't end up with a poor 57% deciding 5th set record (over 50 plus matches) compared to over 75% for djokovic and lose 24 matches holding match points compared to 4 by accident.
I don't think anyone claims Federer was *never* good under pressure. But the fact remains that there have been times when he folded under pressure during important moments against guys like Nadal and Djokovic (Wimbledon finals 2019, squandering tons of break points against Nadal during many matches). Therefore, this video proves nothing. Btw, I'm a huge Federer fan, just being realistic.
Great vid ! You could have had RG 2011 against Djokovic when he was lead 4/5 15-40 in the first, and 4/5 break Djokovic in the fourth, Wimbledon 2014 against Djokovic, lead 2/5 in the fourth, save a match point, comeback and won this set, vs Sampras Wimbledon 2001 when he save break points in the fifth, Australian Open 2017 when he was led 3/1 by Rafa in the final set, the two unreal victories in Melbourne in 2020 against Millman (led 4-8 in the final set tiebreak) and Sandgren (save 7 match points!), when he saved 2 set points against peak Djokovic in the second set of the Dubai 2015 final, the seven latch points saved against Draper in Indian Wells 2002 or 2003 I think...
Anyone who says Roger was not good under pressure is just delusional. You cannot win 20 slams without being best when it matters the most. However, anyone who says he was good under pressure when facing Djokovic or Nadal is also delusional. Those two guys got into his head and were better at the mental game.
What are you talking about? He was under pressure every time he played them, especially when they became storied rivals, and still beat them both plenty of times.
I don't think anyone would say that. Roger was great under pressure, but he's a notch or two below Nole who is the best. As a lifelong Roger fan, it kills me to admit it.
Federer has never retired injured, tired, cramping, heat stroke during a match in his career..let's not forget that Djokovic was problematic and frequent quitter at the beginning of his career. I'm not knocking Novak, he certainly figured out his problems and became very strong from 2010 onwards, but his beginnings were problematic for him and that's a fact.
Djoko would have 2 notch lower in slam stats had Roger did not lost the 2 GS finals to Djoko in USO and wimbly. These 2 slams would give him 2 notch more
Federer was by no means a "mentally weak" player but if we compare him with Nadal and Nole it is clear that he was a step below the two and it is no small thing that they are mentally better than Roger, that speaks of how incredible that virtue is. in Novak for example (whom I consider the best in that aspect in all of history). Furthermore, if we remember the points that Federer lost as match or championship points more than "Mental weakness", I saw them as great merits of the rival in front. Taking that out of the way, Federer will always be my favorite player in history and the reason I like tennis 🎾 😁 ❤
The issue with Fed's game is he always had it on his racket due to his aggressive (and beautiful play) so the other player didn't need to choke, instead it was passed onto Fed. Add onto that his beautiful but error-prone 1hbh.
People criticize federer from 2011-2020 when he was 30-40 years old out of prime, for him to still win many masters title and win 4 grand slam at that age competing against younger hungry prime peak player like nadal and djokovic that was on his level is actually a testament to his greatness
Federer's main problem was his style of play. When he was young, he always had plan B: to be able to play defensively, but with age (when Djoko was on the rise), he was left with only plan A: to be offensive. Being offensive under pressure is much more difficult than being a counter-attacker. That's why Federer has so often cracked against Djokovic.
As much as Federer has a great resume, one negative record one is catastrophic for the GOAT debate: perhaps worse than 2-16 Vs Nadal on clay or 0-3 in the Wimbledon finals Vs Novak Roger lost a whooping 24 !!!! matches when he had one to three match points!!!
Obviously Federer had plenty of clutch moments. But his legacy isn't decided by some random Masters matches. It was in the finals and semi-finals of grand slam tournaments. Being able to out-clutch Borna Coric in the 3R of Rome doesn't exactly make up for blowing match points in a Wimbledon final, going 4-23 on BP in a US Open final, or 1 for 17 in a RG final. Those kinds of big matches with everyone watching is what makes a reputation.
He was good mentally but 26 matches lost from match points up expose his weaker mentality more often than not. For perspective nole lost only 4 matches from match points up and rafa 9 matches.
Stupid Novak fans will never realize how tough it is to play with such style and grace under the greatest pressure. For the way he played these specific points, every one of these points r beyond the capability, range or even imagination of djokovic.
Fedsqaush is very weak mentally he had some success with B players but when it came to novak/nadal he only won 33% of his GS matches agaisnt them!! Fed couldn't even beat nadal once at french, lossed to novak 3 times in a row at wimbledon finals and has al osing record overall at wimbledon to Djoki which was supposed to be his BEST SURFACE!!!....Fed had a weak backhand, didn't think when he played ,never evolved his sqaush game..He did sell lot of runnign shoes and watches to all his armchair tennis fans
Imagine djokovic winning against a 6 year younger fed in his prime. Federer won in 4 sets in the semis at wimby against djokovic and this was a prime djokovic in 2012. Then he lost a extremely close final in 2014 and in 2019 he lost because of nerves..A younger Federer would've aced him with confidence. It got difficult for a 30+ Federer to win against a continuously improving djokovic. One things for sure Federer didn't have the stamina or athleticism of djokovic but was more talented and definitely the overall better player
desperate with should have, could have , fed was more talented in selling running shoes and watches maybe,,,If he was so great he would have dominated his 2 rivals but didn't at all overall...Next u will be saying tom brady not fair ur too old when u beat those younger players@@spideyocd
