Most shops I've worked at in my 40+ years in the business, are giving the easy work to the less competent mechanics, just about anything to the mid level guys and the complicated work to the best they have on staff. Which usually means the best mechanics have lower hours than what management lovingly calls grunts. The really bad shops avoid giving easy work to the best techs because it cuts into their profits or bonuses. Just the way it's always been. Which is why really good mechanics usually try and open their own shop only to find out the difference between being a good mechanic and a business man.

I will agree with your stay late stuff. The other one that sticks in my craw is the shop owner that thinks he owns the employees when they are off the clock and wants to dictate whow you can have for friends because your friends work for the competition. That'd got to be a big one in this town and we only have a small population here

I worked at a dealership that had 2 of those bad traits: favoritism and wanting techs to work late. The highest paid, highest certified tech in the shop got gravy all day long and then praised him for outflagging everyone else. Sales department would sell a car late in the day and then demand a tech stay to do the final prep (software updates) so the customer could drive it home that night!! Some of these software packages took an hour or more to go into the car. The worst was if the tech had done the PDI, he was expected to do the final prep on the car as well FOR FREE because “it is part of the PDI”. In SO glad I left there many years ago!

It comes down to the only shop that is good is the one you own. No matter the situation. You’re never going to find the right place unless you’re the one calling the shots. If the shop isn’t yours just remember that you’re only there to collect a pay check. Stay out of all the shop politics and just do your job. If a dealbreaker happens then move onto the next. Now that I’m back in the role of employee, I don’t care what goes on around me. I have the amount of money I need to make and if that isn’t happening then I’ll just head to the next shop. The truth is there is no loyalty. If you can be replaced then you will be. Once you understand the dark reality of humanity then everything gets easier. No one has your back. Look out for yourself.

If you ask your shop owner why their top tech is their top tech, and they respond with production over skill and experience, 🚩🚩🚩 gtfo

I feel like 99% of shops would respond that way. It's a business. They don't care about fixing cars, it's about ROI.

@@SuperMarioDiagnostics I fear there will not be enough businesses and techs up to the challenge. I can't get people to stop blowing cigarette smoke in my area while I work, let alone keep equipment and information up to a standard to not risk my life working on HV systems. You look at the condition of many shops lifts, and ask yourself if you'd trust their EV safety equipment? Or better yet, they will expect the techs to buy it, like we buy everything else. Dark times may be ahead, but that only produces opportunity for others. FWIW I'm not buying into HV work yet, too dangerous for how unprofessional most shops are.

At the end of the day, if someone is going to starve, shouldn't the top-tech(s) be the most protected as they produce the most value and have the most skills? Sometimes the "top guy" is also getting a lot of junk tickets others cannot handle. The brakes/suspension guy doesn't have the talent to do anything else, so he doesn't "lose" on diag, basket case repairs, etc. Not that I support blatantly unfair favoritism.

As a tech who moved into Management I definitely bumped heads with other management who had no experience being techs so they didn’t want to relate to the tech, it was just about sub par production and high bonuses ….. I just went to my own garage, kept my network tight any work I can’t do I send to another mechanic who works from home too

I’ve seen “good shops” but they do not pay well. If a shop pays well, they work you til you drop. They squeeze every dollar out of workers. It’s poor management and greed. If a shop isn’t doing well, it’s their fault. Not the employee.

I worked at a motorcycle dealer that paid techs by the hour with a bonus for the hours billed. They absolutely favored some over others even when the favored misdiagnosed stuff.

There are no good shops to work for. There is only degrees of bad. As more & more investor come into the repai business it’s all about the budget ( not the P/L) and every day they bump that number up regardless of work flow

Mike it is almost impossible to change human nature. You may not realize it but so many videos you make emphasize the “love of money “. This triggers a lot of hard feelings. Pizza parties, overtime, tool availability and techs in and out are all human nature symptoms of greed and over control and jealousy. After 50 yrs in this field I was extremely burned out on the constant cycles of all these human factors. It’s not much different than having to deal with your children and perceived favoritism.

I'm an apprentice at small euro indie shop in the US that specializes in Porsche/Audi. The problem is the shop owner and management are always in terrible moods (talking down to everyone, especially me), they promised me that they would teach me to become a tech but they hired on another apprentice and are teaching them everything about the cars while I mop, sweep, and organize the shop. I try very hard to show up to work motivated and driven but I feel like they don't care at all no matter how hard I try to prove to them that I would be an apprentice worth teaching and honestly I'm over it completely. Any advice as to what I should do?

You’re going to get pushed out or let go if you don’t do your own research on how to do said job. You lie and tell them you know how, then you go into the bathroom and RU-vid it.

Tolerating heavy drug use was one reason I left a shop. Testing occurred only before hiring and after an accident. Most shops are " on the spectrum", not all good, not all bad. The goal is to find one that has very few bad qualities, and lots of good qualities.
@xNLxReloaded
@xNLxReloaded День назад
I mean not testing does not mean you tolerate it, and still so what if the job gets done? Its also something about trusting the people you work with. You are definititely not suitable to be a boss if you think you have the right to drug test your employers 24/7
