If you are familiar with my content, you will know that I'm extremely enthusiastic about the pull up and its variations. The pull up is a simple and accessible exercise that can have a profound effect on our aesthetics and physical capability. It develop the lats, famous for creating the sought after V-Taper, as well as biceps, forearms, mid and lower traps, and the core. Moreover, it is uniquely functional. Climbers, combat athletes, and tactical athletes/first responders will all benefit from this exercise as it closely replicates movements they encounter as part of their every day lives.

Man...that is some of the strictest most textbook pullup form I've ever seen. Just proves that you don't need added weight to make them challenging.

Also, Mike Israetel (a famous fitness RU-vidr that use scientific methods to his training) claimed that you will get a massive back if you can do sets of bodyweight sternum pull ups. Let's do pull ups till we fly with our lats, boys!!!

Yes, very impressive. But I read that for the greatest hypertrophic gains, you need to be explosive in the concentric phase? I think the slower pull ups are more geared towards strength. But there is crossover between the two, so I'm not sure how much it matters which way you do them if at an intermediate level.

@@goodyeoman4534 - I think the main driving factors of hypertrophy are TUT and volume. I think that being explosive in the concentric is more geared towards strength with force = mass×acceleration.

Doing Kyle's style of pull ups, I remember I was hitting about 3 sets of 5 slow and solid range of motion. When I had attempted a max pull up test I had gotten 15. Frequently done pull ups absolutely turn you into a beast for even the most hardcore scenarios such as carrying 2 year olds and gentle things like knife fights.

Oh yeah, and Simonster Strength. Really underappreciated channel, considering he's one of the strongest and most skilled calisthenics athletes in the world. Check out some of his highlights. Extremely impressive. But besides that, he's got a lot of very technical tutorials on his channel.

I've been watching your videos and starting out very slowly - 1 rep 4 times per day spread out. Now I'm doing 16 squats per day and 6 pushups, it may not sound much but the change it's made to my strength and aesthetic is incredible. This is exactly what RU-vid should be for. Thanks Kyle.

It just makes so much more sense to me to focus on the exercises that give you the most return rather than many different exercises that just aren't as effective. Been focusing on push ups, pull ups, and squats for the past couple of weeks as per your suggestion. Looking forward to keeping this going for a long time.

I've been doing just that for the last 4 months or so and I'm looking and performing and feeling better than ever as a result, so keep going. Not saying it's day and night or some miracle but just an overall slight yet noticeable improvement focusing on those 3 (plus overhead press personally so that's a 4th one for me) and doing them all well, consistently.

@@abanerjee8237 my bodyfat is 14 percent these days so I have blurry decent 4 pack of abs they look good flexing in good lighting but im not lean enough for a six pack or very visible abs.

It took me a while to 'master' the pull up - resisting the urge to bounce, ensuring full lock out of elbows etc - but it was all worth it. I was a skinny ectomorph before; now I'm lean with respectable muscle mass. I can do 12 clean pull ups and maybe 15 as an all-out effort with imperfect technique.

If you want to build and help get higher reps, when you get tired and can't do any more try static holds at top and doing shortie pull ups - don't go all the way down and up - this is time under tension and will seriously help with endurance and mass!

You made me want to do pull-ups (had to start training at the gym for that) and it's like, my favorite exercise now. Used to only be able to do one clean rep (+1 or 2 dirty ones), I've followed your advice and now I can do 5 clean reps. Thank you for your content

@@isaiahsteward3968 You can find plenty of videos on RU-vid that will explain you how to proceed step by step. But usually people start with the assisted pull-up machine, or the assisted pull-ups with bands

You can start with the pullup bar. Begin each rep at the TOP...i.e. just hang for as long as you can. Takes time and practice but the more you do them the better you'll get at them. Don't be afraid to do them though. Even if you can do none right now keep trying to do them.

You are so right. I stopped doing pullups for 5-6 months and was doing a lot of dumbbell work my gains slowed. I put them back in a few weeks back and I am once again building muscle. Almost like newbie gains again.

When I was younger, I loved pull-ups cause they gave me that V-taper and muscular arms with awesome vascularity. Now 30yrs later I love them cause they keep my body from getting destroyed by being a desk jockey 40hrs a week. I put special emphasis on activating the scapula all throughout the movement, getting a total stretch at the bottom, start the ascent by squeezing the scapula and finishing that squeeze at the very top as if I'm trying to squeeze an orange between my shoulder blades. All in all, the benefits of pull-ups are solid in every aspect.

K boges my man, been really loving your content and appreciating your take on things. It's been very helpful and has changed my view on fitness and my relationship to it for the better in the last few months, so thank you. Would you consider doing some more in depth videos on not only nutrition but just an overall healthy lifestyle? I'm thinking in terms of topics like sleep, hydration, stretching, staying active, getting fresh air and sunshine etc. as well as your personal take on caffeine, alcohol, dairy products, tips for good digestion etc.

Absolutely love this channel. Exactly the inspiration I need. Im 65, had a heart attack 6 years. After that experience, I now walk 5-7 miles a day, and do at least 200 pushups in 8 sets of 25. I am definately going to buy a pullup bar today. I used to be very strong with pullups when I was younger. Pullups will be a great additive to my pushups. Thank you so much for this wonderful channel.

Kyle, I’m 58 and started lifting again about a year ago. 6’5” and started at 258lbs and now down to 225lbs (lightest since age 25). I’ve never been good at body weight exercises but came across your channel a couple of months ago. You inspired me to incorporate calisthenics. I’ve been doing assisted pull ups focused on form for a couple of weeks. On a lark, I decided to try a body weight parallel pull-up at the end of todays work out. I nailed it!! So happy right now!! thank you for your guidance and I will continue focusing on form as I add progression!!

One of the many reasons pull-ups were a staple during my time in the military. Someone once told me that pull-ups were to the upper body what squats were for the lower. Still a staple of my work-outs at 57y/o. They are so under-appreciated bumot many folks.

I'm on it, boss. Over the past 8 months I went from maxing out at 6 poor form pull ups to a max of 18 strict form pull ups. I'm starting to enjoy body weight rows a lot these days but pull ups will always be king.

@@tinashe5822 if you haven't already, the first step is setting healthy eating habits. I originally started by training 3 days a week and doing one push, pull and legs movement each session, doing 3 sets to failure / near failure. Once I could do 10 pull ups I put on a weight vest with 2kg in it and every time I hit 10 in a set I would add +2kg the next session. This was good at the start but once I got to +8kg I took a video of one of my sets and my form was just awful. Plus my lower back really hurt doing push ups with the weight vest on so I stopped using it. I then switched to training 4 days a week and alternating between body weight pull ups and horizontal rows every session. There's no real trick to it besides get your sets in every week and train to near failure every set. The reps that count the most are the ones closest to failure. At the end of the day only you know if you are truly pushing yourself to the limit in your workouts and if you're not you're only letting yourself down. It's hard at first for sure and it's embarrassing when you're almost throwing up in your mouth from doing 5-6 pull ups but you just need to get it done and then get it done the next set and the next set. Just remember the actual number doesn't matter, all that matters is that you are pushing yourself hard in your workout. Although you should record your number of reps in each set as it is a good way of seeing your progress and that will motivate you to keep going. The hardest part of all is being patient and sticking with the diet and training routine when you don't immediately see results. Trust that the results will come and keep pushing yourself forward. Hi J I've recently found your channel and it's been a breathe of fresh air. The 'health and fitness' industry has frustrated me for a long time. The obsession with the aesthetics approach should never of been put at the heart of it. Your approach centred around the basics, general health and strength, along with minimal time and equipment, is the approach that most are looking for but just havnt realised yet

The pull-up is the most effective exercise for martial artists and fighters in general. Because What is a punch? No, it's not thrusting your fist in someone's face it's rotating your body in the opposite direction. The same is true for any other power strike. Jabs and push kicks are not power strikes they are more like supplemental moves. What is grappling ? It's all about manipulating your opponent's body by pulling their body towards you. Similarly, almost all combat moves involve some kind of pulling motion. So my fighter friends out there take your pullups seriously.

@@lakshyamongia3270 Those things have more to do with genetics than anything else and having an insane V has nothing to do with your performance in the ring. I mean Muhammad Ali fought most of his matches with a fat belly but no one can say that he was a bad fighter. Martial arts training focuses more on strength and technique than anything else and many people develop chiselled abs with just that. Even my abs are visible year-round. Even though I follow a general boxing-based training programme.

Legends say he could push kick a man 3x his size 50feet in the air! Jokes aside, he focused more on the movement, speed, and looking good on camera. His goal wasn't to win against any martial artist it was instead to express himself through physical movement. Also adding to the genetics narrative I had decent calves and visible abs since I was a teenager but my neck looks like that of Crane from Kung fu panda!

I’ve noticed that exercises that are mainly for “use ability”or a body movement thats a “functional movement”builds amazing aesthetics,I believe that training for functionality is the best option to get in shape. You have a functional body and a aesthetic one at that.

It makes sense. Our instinctive standard for a proper-looking man would surely have evolved to reflect the men who were good at the physical tasks of survival. It's only after industrialization made us prosperous enough to NOT depend on physical tasks that it became feasible to have "fashions" in male appearance -- the "delicate pretty-boy", the high-maintenance bodybuilder, the wealthy fat man, etc.

Hey Ritter! Glad you enjoyed! I'm a huge fan of dips. I think they are probably the best upper body pushing exercise, however, my shoulders do not tolerate them well, and in general they aren't as widely tolerated as the push up.

Thanks for your encouragement to implement daily training; i started on the first of May and was only able to manage 3 days back to back initially. I've now trained 11 consecutive days and feel great - the ability to increase or decrease intensity while still getting quality sets in is amazing. Before it was so easy to do a day then have 2 off because 'sore' - now soreness doesnt seem to be much of an issue but strength and aesthetics are increasing - what is this witchcraft you preach!?! Again, thanks, its made a great improvement to my daily routine

Man!!! I've always done bodybuilding mixed with calisthenics for almost 20 years, but I must say, since I have started using your metodology, due to convinience, the results are really good: amazing pumps, nice gains and it feels it is less stressfull I don't know how to explain. The formula is more or less 3 series of 15 pull ups or chin ups, 3 series of 25 of some form of push up and 3 series of 40 squats or lunges. Then 2 more finishers in the end. Almost every day of the week. It works wonders and I really enjoy it. 20ish minute workout and that is wrap up... The only thing that I still can't manage is the amount of volume. Sometimes I push to hard then I regret it in the next day... Anyway, thank you for sharing your knowledge. You are really onto something powerfull in here.

100% accurate video. When I first started doing pull ups, I was surprised how soar my pecs and tris got the following day. My favorite routine is pull one day, push another. For push I like weighted dips. Used in combo with unweighted strict pull ups it's a hell of a push pull workout.

Just knowing you could scale that wall or fence to get away from danger or help someone in need is a GREAT feeling that I think everyone should experience. Don't be like me though and overtrain and skip progressions as tennis elbow is a nightmare.

I love pull ups I I'll add a 45 pound plate and just go for strict quality reps I haven't gone heavier than that all year and can still pull 100lbs for a few reps it's all about the quality of the movement

After a certain point in training, I've found pull ups to be best performed as a sort of "daily routine", when you perform a set or two to the point of mild exhaustion. Even when in posession of significant strength, In my personal experience it's better to not perform classic pull ups before the harder variations within a limited timeframe, as those pull ups exhausted my energy somewhat, and, as a result, hindered my performance in strength movements. Once again that is my personal experience and overall pullups are great.

Hey Kyle, I am on the fence about this style of training, to be honest. It seems very flexible, and the time commitment is not large, which I like. However, I am confused about the type of results that this style of training can give. In a 3x a week program, a person can train hard, and reasonably know that they will get stronger because of how hard they trained. But it seems to me in this style of training you would not be able to train hard enough to get a significant muscular adaptation. So I was just wondering how you would say the strength and hypertrophy results of your current training routine (daily PPL full body) would compare to a 3x a week full body routine (reddit recommended routine for example). Good question... here is what we know from the research. You can train a few reps shy of failure and get a full growth response. We also know that a single set is enough to elicit some sort of adaptation, and a few sets will definitely be enough to stimulate growth in the majority of people, especially if they are taken close to failure. We also know that fatigue builds up from higher weekly volumes, but we can reduce fatigue by distributing volume over more days. Essentially you get the same weekly volume, with less fatigue, at an intensity sufficient to drive adaptation.

How often would you recommend doing this? There was a time I did it everyday about 3 sets of 15 but later on stopped working out completely. Started again a week ago and can only do about a 4 to 5 in a set.

I think 3-4 times a week if fine if you're working at 80-90% of maximum intensity on each set. If you're more of a beginner, I'd say do a few moderate sets daily to get the volume in.

you usually want 10-20 set per muscle per week, but the most improtant thing is for you to have fun and be consistent. Even one set to failure is productive and way better than nothing

@@lucase6077 it is to do the same exercise multiple times a day with rest breaks of up to an hour. So you might do a set of 5 pull ups in the morning Then another set of 5 reps mid morning then another 5 reps at lunch time Then another 5 in the afternoon for example. Over all you will have accumulated more than 20 repetitions for the whole day. It just allows you to rest enough between sets so you can perform the next set at a more optimum level because you are not fatigued too much. It’s a good way to improve your rep count. Give it a try👍

Hey! I asked for a "Do your pullups!" video in your last video and you made it! Thanks!! I saw your comment on Insta about how you're always in fear of losing your current body composition, which is just a few cheat meals away.. and I see you mentioned about refeed days there I'm doing a similar fat loss program where I eat clean for 6 days a week (and just 2 meals each day, IF style).. and then do a 36 hour fast on the 7th day.... the refeed day is the day after this fast.. My question: Do you use fasting? If so (and even if not), can u do a video on those concepts? (fasting, refeeds, low energy during diet days etc) Love and appreciate your work!

Hey Prananna! I do use fasting. I think it's a really useful tool for managing overall calorie intake and for me, it makes keeping good body composition pretty sustainable. If I consistently over indulge (like when I'm on vacation), I will usually get back into shape with more aggressive fasting protocols, like with a little shorter eating window. Overall, it is a great way to go for many people. It't not for everyone, but it can work well.

Thanks, Andrew. For a strong core, your basic pull ups and push ups will do a solid job. If you want more than what they can offer, hanging leg raises, L Sits, and plank variations are my favorites.
