Dobinsons MRA 3-Way Adjustable Monotube Struts and Shocks - How to Adjust

Pointing out the features of the new Dobinsons MRA 3-way adjustable external reservoir shocks and struts, and also showing how the adjusters work, why and when you would adjust them, as well as how the fittings on the hoses work in a wider range of motion than most other external reservoir brands out there.
Dobinsons MRA shocks from Exitoffroad.com are available now for Toyota 4th and 5th Gen 4Runner, FJ Cruiser, Toyota Tacoma fronts only from 2005-2020 (rears coming later in the year), Lexus GX470, Lexus GX460, Prado 120, Prado 150, and soon for the Landcruiser 200 Series. All of them have pretty much the same features, so this video will cover all of those different vehicles.

You guys are the best for Dobinsons, this is a great overview of the MRAs. Super happy with my MRA/MRR whatever they are called now... for my Gen2 Tacoma. It takes a bit of experimentation to understand the relationship between high and low compression and rebound but ounce you get it right the ability to adjust for different loads and road conditions (freeway vs heavy rock crawling vs corrugated firetrails) is awesome. Particularly if you have a daily driver that has heavy loads on trips but less for normal in town the MRAs let you dial in for each situation.

I got the MRA for a 2020 4runner but it came with a long hose which I do not like it. In addition, I the generic mounting hardware for the reservoir sucks for both, front and back. The reservoirs mount on different points on the driver side vs the passanger side and it does not look professional. I ordered the front brakets used the the Tacoma thinking it would work but now I have to relocate the wiper fluid reservoir on the passanger side to get the bracket to work. If I would known how poorly designed the reservoir mounting is, I would I would have gone with the IMS or gone with another brand. Why Dobinson does not design some brackets that works in a similar way as the brakets King has for the reservoirs? That is a simple and elegant solution. Those aluminum inserts that go inside the chasis to put the bolts on look horrible with their tails sticking out thru the chasis holes. This is a very poor design. I am not happy about this issue.

Thanks for showing an Australian a product from Australia. These must ne the strongest shocks with the specs they have. Is the MRA different to MRR?

Haha you're welcome! The MRR has evolved into the MRA with the 3 levels of adjustability and all the other upgrades. I call them MRA to differentiate from the MRR since they were also sold for a long time. The A being adjustable.

the front MRA has the resi connected to it on the bottom. any fear of it tearing off when the front droop to far down? i feel more comfortable with it connected to the top.

I've never seen one fail so far from that. The only way I've seen them fail is when people don't mount the reservoir properly and it falls off and rips the line. When setting it up, you leave room in the line so that at full extension the hose is still not tight.

I installed the MRA on my SWB Pajero, is it possible to change the rebound on the struts?

I'm not personally familiar with those specific struts, but rebound adjusters are normally at the top and go down through the center of the strut mount.

The IMS and MRA are great monotube options, but it really depends how you're gonna drive the Patrol and what sort of terrain you'll be on. You can't go wrong with the IMS, but if you need adjustability due to varying loads or terrain, the 3 way adjustable MRA would be the best to be able to tune it in to how you want it to ride.

@@ExitOffroad Just a easy view on say " turn the dial this way for comfort ,this way for carrying a load" etc, rebound adjustments and such. Id recommend anyone buying these to buy the sway bar relocation kit if ones available for your vehicle, with the wider diameter over most stock shocks your sway bar will impact the lower area of the shock. Icon makes a good kit for this. Love my Dobinsons MRA but id like a better explanation on what does what and why.

As part of a full kit, yes, and it depends what height you want and what weight you carry. There are a lot of options.

@@ExitOffroad They're called a coil over strut basically. The coil is not on all vehicle applications of MRA, maybe just the IFS ones me thinks...

I have a question about the front rebound hex nut. Do i need to remove the allen grub screw inside before putting it on or just srew it in together onto the grub screw? The hex nut comes with spring and ball bearing too.

It goes onto the top of the grub screw. The other pieces are spares because people lose them all the time when removing the screw to hold the shaft for assembly and removal of the top mount

MRR were the original monotube remote resevoir shocks and had no valving adjustments. They were labeled as MRA several years back when they went through a full redesign and became Monotube Remote Adjustable shocks so as to decipher the difference between the 2.

I like the features, but I just can't stomach the Dobinsons colors. If they would offer them in maybe a black and silver mix I'd buy.
