I subbed for 2 reasons 1 I just got a new Harley dyna wide glide 07 Secondly you can hear this man's experience and honesty and is definitely appreciated
Men I love his voice ... he should have TV show or Radio show good job on every video just blast watching and learning a lot been new to family HD is my dream bike and finally got one cant stop watching all RU-vid videos now so cool to get so much help , god bless
Doc, you’re the best! I am 65 y/o , riding since 17 y/o and learning something everyday..... and these days- learning something every video! When I come to SC we GOTTA have a beer! No surprises, I’ll give you a heads up. As they say, “ You’re the man!” Talk soon.
Thanks Doc!! Can't thank you enough for the knowledge you share with us. I just reinstalled my back drag pipe using your techniques plus added copper gasket sealer. I'll know by the morning if it's sealed or not. Check back soon with update.
You make good videos Doc, Thanks... On my 2012 StreetGlide, I marked the front and rear connectors on the O2 sensors, at the control box. Then snipped a couple of ty-raps, and the sensor wires came off with the pipes. Then the O2 sensors can be taken off the pipes easily with a regular wrench. Piece of cake.
Good tip on the HD cone gasket, which I would have known it before I put on this aftermarket header pipe. Discovered this problem when I put this pipe on, I think I am ok though, but it's something to remember for the future.
When it comes to exhaust gaskets on my aftermarket exhaust, I fought getting a good seal at first. What I’ve figured out to work every time is stacking two Screaming Eagle exhaust gaskets in each head. I’ve done this on several brands of exhaust headers and it seals every time.
Great video. I'm so glad my 2000 doesn't need any of that O2 stuff. I thought you were going to discuss hp and torque but this was valuable info for guys with newer bikes. Years ago, I heard a TC 88 with long shots and it sounded so sweet. I decided that would be my next modification. On my first ride, after I installed the longshots, I instantly noticed a huge loss of low end torque. It just did not pull as strong below 2500 rpm. But it sounded really nice and looked awesome. There seemed to be a bit more power up around 3500 which I seldom used to need. A few months later I saw a video that tested several different exhaust systems on the same harley. Lo and behold, the ones that made the most torque at low rpms had a crossover pipe. My Vance and Hines did not have it. So that told me what happened to the torque. I don't know how that would affect a newer harley with the O2 sensors but I'm certain a system without a crossover would create a loss of low end torque. Might add some HP way up high but for scooting away from stop signs, I much prefer the greater torque.
I always use a little permatex high temperature exhaust gasket sealer on them as well. Then torque them down to 15-20 lbs instead of 10-12 as the book says.
Not to contradict Doc because he is incredibly knowledgeable and trying to help everyone he can, but I found this "method" of cutting the exhaust gasket basically impossible. I was EXTREMELY careful in cutting the gasket, but about 3 cuts in the gasket simply split apart. Now I have to order another set. I'm just going to take my chances and install factory cone gaskets and be as precise as possible in fitment of pipe. I think the key with the exhaust gasket is to install it correctly with a gasket tool so the gasket is perfectly placed to prevent it from bunching up.
Great video. When adding a full exhaust such as a thunderheader or D&D on a M8 114 and leaving the air filter stock. Do you need to put in a tuner? Or is the 10% extra fuel the ECU can adjust for enough?
Oh, I'm having fuel mileage issues with my ride.. light bulb.. check to see if the previous owner swapped O2 sensor positions when they installed aftermarket pipes..
Hi, I have 2011 softail deluxe which I’m about to replace the exhaust system on. I’ve noticed the upper pipe/ rear cylinder has a cable going to it near where it meets the slip on. Can you tell me what this cable is? It seems to disappear behind the swing arm.
Hey Doc I was wondering what your thought is on decatting the factory pipe. I understand that you can not recommend doing this but I wondered what you think. Does it help the flow? Does it make the right side cooler? What’s your thinking on this Doc? Thanks
@@LowCountryHarleyDavidson I love all your videos. Your video on tuners is one of the reasons I went with Thundermax. I'm actually surprised that the channel isn't a lot bigger. It just struck me as funny that a lot of the comments are about specific things with people's bikes as if the comments section is a Q&A for you to diagnose bikes for them over the internet.
Doc thank you for this information . Mi street 500 Check engine oxigen sensor from open or overflow , I went to the dealer and bought a new one install it and continue giving me the check engine . And I can go over 45 mph . Appreciate if you can give me song advice, thank you.
I installed vh 2 into 2 big radius on my 16 street glide I keep getting code for no combustion front and rear, could this be caused due to a leak at the exhaust manifold as I used the gaskets that were provide (which was before I saw this video)
I have added some reinhart 4.5 slip ones to my 2020 street glide special and want to put a header pipe on . Is it necessary to get it tuned or what should I do after installing the header pipe ?
Put it all back to stock so you can keep your power train warranty. If you don’t care about warranty, change your header pipe and tune it with whatever your local Dyno tuner uses. Thanks ~ Doc
Do you got any videos on how to put on the vance and hines big radius 2 into 2 on a 2008 harley street glide??. I've look up everything and cant find anything thanks
Which O2 sensor should I buy for my FXSB Breakout 2014 Denniskirk is claiming theirs better from oem as they are made with ceramic body made of stabilised zirconian dioxide, surface coated with gasspermeable platinum electrodes & porous ceramic help erosion due to contamination particles in exhausts
Hey Doc - the HD manual suggests permatex if a leak is found. I'm about to install a new exhaust with a new gasket. What are your thoughts on using permatex? Thanks
New exhaust with new gaskets and new clamps not necessary. But disclaimer here -- this is with H-D products. I have had to use a sealant on aftermarket pipes. Thanks ~ Doc
Yea, unfortunately Doc Harley tends to talk to the crowd as kids or youngsters, many that have already passed away would have a big laugh at the condescending tone, but overall his is an asset to the HD youtube community
@Peter Angles well I suspect he sees alot of naive harley owners and doesn't want to leave them out or behind, kinda like a early elementary school teacher, herding to children..but got to give it to him, he is consistent
I find it odd that air can get into something under pressure, unless its drafting or has some type of venture affect like a carburetor. Usually they want a good exhaust seal so all the hydrocarbons that did not burn can reach the 02 sensor and allow for correct fuel trim adjustments. I could be wrong but I'm not so sure air would be sucked in unless I just don't know the systems and they draft air in from that area or they bottle neck at some point and could create a vacuum at the seal. Any thoughts?
Its a law of gasses. Gas moving across an opening will create low pressure in that opening. The key is that the gasses are flowing past the opening and not terminating at it. Another thing is that the exhaust traveling in the header does so in waves at the speed of sound that reflect high and low pressures from the end of the pipe all the way through to the intake valve. So there are both high and low pressures in the exhaust pipes and because of their fluid motion, they both contribute to inhaling fresh air into any cracks. Same applies to intake manifold/carburetor leaks.
It's a part of the venturi theory. Simply demonstrate with a glass of water, straw, air compressor. Blow compressed air across the tip of the straw, not into it and low pressure will suck the water up and out of the straw.
back in the day with the old Shovel if you had an air leak at the head and pipe connection, usually you would get a back fire when you let off the throttle. That was caused by air being sucked into the pipe just like Doc said. So it could suck in air and cause a problem with the sensor. My opinion
I work as an Auto Tech. When checking for exhaust leaks, We cover up the exhaust outlet. Causing Back Pressure. Which forces the exhaust out of the leak. An Eductor would be another way to describe how it works. Same principle when moving water.
No. Different mounting brackets. Different clearance to floor boards. Different O2 clearance issues. But of coarse, were there is a will (and welder) there could be a way. Thanks ~ Doc
Mike, Question, thinking of stock style K&N in my Stock Air Box and some Screamin Eagle or After market Slip-ons on my 2012 FLHRC, in your professional opinion do you think i'll need a tuner ?
In performance conversions “need and want” are sometimes one and the same. You have a 2020. Follow the kit as H-D made it. This will keep you in good graces with the Almighty Warrenty. In 2 years ask me again 🙄 Thanks ~ Doc
Doc- I just DE-CAT my M-8 head pipe. I have a Redshift 468 cam kit, high flow exhaust, and slip-ons. I thought the CAT being gone would benefit my situation, but I lost so much back pressure, I realize I screwed up! What can I do to regain some of that pressure back? My first thought was different baffles in the slip-ons, but I want to hear it from a pro. Please help!!!
Doc, I know this question does not go with today information but, I just bought a 2021 Tri Gide Ultra from Tim Lucas. I am sure you know him. Question to you, do both rear wheels of the trike pull or does the left side only pulling?
I am installing 02 sensors in my 2003 103 ultra classic 2 into 1 exhaust. I have being observing on RU-vid not to put the 02 sensors in the lower part of the pipes or the straight pipes. 6"from where the pipe goes into the cylinder head, It may give a false reading to the 02 sensor?????
doc i have a 99 road king classic flhrci can i cut the cross over out completely and have the ends welded up for true dual sound and will my harley still run the same with a better sound
When you're replacing the exhaust studs, while drilling it out will I feel a give which tells me I need to stop drilling? After tapping the hole, would it be beneficial to use loktite to add some security on the studs? I've been riding and studying motorcycles (HD) for 3 years. I'm NO where near an expert or even average. Just a veteran with little money but won't compensate safety.
I'm not sure of your situation. To remove exhaust studs we double nut the stud or use a Snap-On Stud remover. If the stud is broke off, it is best to remove the head and have a qualified machine shop remove the original stud carefully so as to save the original threads. There are drill jigs to keep a drill bit straight on the market but not alot of room to work on an installed head....Doc
I have an 17 FLS, and when I cold start the bike the idol is at 1300 + RPM’s and it takes a good 4 minutes to go down to between 1000-1020 RPM’s, what can I do to fix this to where it should be ?
The initial rise to 1300 is normal, HD designed this in the software to help the charging system to charge and run the bike. as for the 4 minutes. That is a long time. I wonder if you have modified your bike but have not included adding more fuel ie tuning. It is possible you could have an air leak in the intake manifold or a weak engine, manifold temp sensor or battery...Doc
hello Doc, maybe you can help me please, nobody can answer this exactly. i would like install a cobra pro chamber head pipe on my street glide special 2019. will this system fit with a scramin eagle street cannon exhaust? thank you and regards
This question is like asking if my Jack Daniels will mix with Mountain Dew. You have to try it. I find it best to stay with 1 manufacturer’s product. If Cobra has designed a good performance head pipe then they probably designed a great muffler to go with it. (and yes Jack Daniels does mix with Mountain Dew, it’s called A Doc).
Question I have not been able to find an answer to. I have a 2002 Road King Screamin Eagle... I bought the DynoJet Power Vision, but virtually none of the functions I paid for work with my motorcycle, because the 2002 did not have Oxygen Sensors. My question: Can I drill and bung the exhaust headers and install wide band O2 Sensors and is the OEM ECM set up or capable of wiring to the O2 Sensors, since they were not available when the bike was built? Is there a manner or method to solve this nightmare? Otherwise, I have a DynoJet Power Vision that is USELESS which I cannot sell or return for a refund, since it is MARRIED to my bike. HEP ME! HEP ME! None of the Maps/TUNES DynoJet has provided make my bike run smooth. The bike misses, pops, decel pops and surges. Hoping with O2 Sensors installed, the Power Vision can tune the bike. Any ideas? No! Not interested in buying a Newer Harley, I am not a Harley guy. If I am in a group of Harley owners, I will be easy to spot. I am the one in the Hawaiian shirt who does not own a single Harley patch. Not my gig!
Need, should, want....it's Your choice. How does the bike run? On Pre-Cat exhaust systems, taking the baffles out let's fresh air confuse the O2 sensors. Where are your O2 located? Some owners don't care how the bike runs just want Loud Pipes...Doc
@@LowCountryHarleyDavidson Thanks for your response, your videos are great ! Yes, I will most likely get it tuned at Doc' in Shawano Wi. I'm in Green Bay.
@@LowCountryHarleyDavidson right on thank you. My dealership said they couldn't do the stage one as it was already done when I changed pipes. Thanks for the reply!
I put Rinehart slip-ons on drag pipes I cut off to fit the mufflers I want to put a cross pipe on where would be the ideal spot performance wise to put it on a Evo Sportster
I change my lawn mower plug every year. Why wouldn't anyone not change the plugs in your bike is beyond me. Cheapest and easiest thing u can do to your bike every year. If you can't change a plug u shouldn't be riding
