Here is a rare opportunity to go one-on-one with one of the premier flatpickers of our time. Doc Watson has influenced a generation of pickers, from Clarence White to Tony Rice. This video is devoted to teaching intermediate-level players the intricacies of Doc's unique flatpicking style.Doc sits down with Steve Kaufman, a top-notch flatpicker in his own right, andshows how he plays some of his most beloved songs and instrumentals. He and Steve trade licks and play duets, and Doc slows his playing down so that you will be able to follow along as you learn to play these fabulous tunes.Starting with the old gospel song "Open Up Them Pearly Gates," Doc shows how he uses hammer-ons and pull-offs to easily add notes to his accompaniment. He then launches into a crosspicking solo, moving effortlessly up the neck in simple movable positions that create a complex-sounding break. Moving to the classic ballad "Little Sadie," Doc explains how he devises his licks and positions in D minor. On "More Pretty Girls Than One," "New River Train" and "White House Blues" he slows down the flashy runs that punctuate each line of the song. This is one of Doc's signature guitar techniques that has baffled many students of Doc's guitar style. He then carefully breaks down of the solo to each song.Doc and Steve launch into breathtaking versions of classic fiddle tunes "Salt Creek" and "Ragtime Annie," showing you the lead and back-up, as well as the "twin" harmony parts. (Try these out with a friend.) These show stoppers are also slowed down so you can really see what these two incredible guitarists are playing.Changing gears, Doc teaches his version of the hauntingly lovely "Goodnight Waltz," as well as his improvisations to the country and jazz tunes, "When It's Peach Pickin' Time in Georgia" and "Sweet Georgia Brown." Finally, as an extra treat, Doc brings on his grandson Richard Watson for a performance of three bluesy songs they have been performing together: "Walk On, Boy," "Chicago Blues" and the evergreen "Summertime."Whether you start out with this tape or use it as a follow-up to "Doc's Guitar: Fingerpicking and Flatpicking" (one of Homespun's perennial best-sellers), you'll find a wealth of flatpicking challenges that will hone your own guitar technique and skills.

Amateur mandolin picker here, but Doc is my favorite musician. Regardless of the specific instrument, it's a real treat to see such details of a performance from such a supremely talented individual, gracious teacher, and wonderful example for all mankind. What a legacy Doc left behind for us! RIP Doc

Look good folks! Doc Watson is a living legend. We only have these treasures for a short time. Let's appreciate Doc now, while he is still with us. Such a brilliant, humble man! I could sit down with him and talk or play for hours. A person could really learn something from someone like Doc Watson, about playing ugitar AND about life.

Inspirational in that Doc, in this video is elderly but can still play a guitar like a young man. Unlike sport based activities, guitar playing skills don't seem to diminish as much with age. I look forward to playing well into my dotage.

Doc is a legend and one of the few Bluegrass artists with real swing-jazz players will know what I mean. Many new Bluegrass hotshots sacrifice feel for speed and metronomic precision, losing much of what makes music, musical.

Doc is 86 years old now. I was lucky enough to see him this summer in Sugar Grove, N. Carolina. He played with his grandson Richard Watson, (Merle's son) and Charles Welch. I have four or five vids of the live performance posted on my channel here on You Tube. Go to Grasshopperslim and check them out if you like Doc!

I would suggest importing the video into a program like sony vegas (pro/platinum) and slowing it down in the program. You are right about Doc being very strict and close to the fretboard. He needs to be since he is blind as you know. I guess the reason why he never seems to let one finger move freely as Steve does, is a safety factor since making the use of chordshapes and having all fingers in the ready position makes it easier for him to find his way around the fretboard, being blind.

Is there any way to get slow playback on RU-vid? It's hard enough to pick up the fills even when they low it down for the lesson. Doc Watson is expecially hard to follow since he plays so close to the fretboard. The other guys rips it up as well !! Great Stuff ...

@McMillan753 dude, get a clue!!! Refering to Doc Watson as some "Old Bro" is a insult to anyone who know anything about the pioneers in flatpicking. There's a ton a instructional material on homespun tapes...go check out their web site, order some of Doc's stuff, practice for the rest of your life and you'll still never be as good this "old bro"!!!!!!
