The anime was quite good as well. Another one that might be interesting and similar to the premise you mentioned in the beginning is a Japanese medical drama called Jin. Basically a modern Japanese doctor gets sent back in time to the Edo period, and it's about how he deals with that. I watched it around 10 years ago, so I don't remember too many details or if it was particularly accurate medicially, but I remember there was a fun arc where he goes about inventing penicillin to treat people.

My favorite bit of Parallel World Pharmacy anime is towards the end, right before Pharma has to go all CDC, where the female botanical researcher is basically vindicated by having a penicillin culture.

I work in pharmacy myself, and when I saw this anime a few seasons back, I saw the word "pharmacy" and prepared to heckle it to no end. To my surprise, i couldn't see very much wrong with the info. When they introduced TB, that's when it became one of my favourites for that season. I did read somewhere that Parallel World Pharmacy was created in part by the Japan Pharmacy Association to advertise pharmacy as a valid field to pursue.

As a biology student I have to say that I started reading that manga and yes, it's great. And when it comes to Tuberculosis, it can also be caused by other bacteria from the same genus: Mycobacterium bovis (which usually affects cows, and can be passed to humans), Mycobacterium africanum and Mycobacterium kansasii. In general, the genus Mycobacterium is the nastiest when it comes to infections, as their outer wall has an extremely thick extra layer of mycolic acids, which are a kind of ramified hidroxilic acids with extreme resistance to external attacks to the point that their nickname is "resistants to acid-alcohol mixture". In fact, the pulmonary Tb is the most common form because it's the usual development when M. tuberculosis enters the lungs and the macrophages try to prevent their expansion (by phagocitosis), but since they are so resistant, the macrophages end up being the ones destroyed instead, and the T-Helper cells in the lungs activate a response which consists on creating a granulome by gathering white cells around the infection and forming epitelial tissue around. Those granulomae (whose tuberculous-shape give the illness its name) can be there for years, with the illness contained, but once one breaks and the bacteria get to the blood... well, I already said it, as they're immune to phagocitosis, once they enter your bloodstream, you can consider yourself dead (in fact, most people die in less than 24h). Another nasty member of the genus is M. leprae, which causes lepra: again, the symptoms are those from when it's in the skin, as once it gets into your bloodstream, you are dead.

my favorite part of watching the anime (and this video) is that I was watching both with a friend who is a pharmacy tech and he would either be like, "yeah, that's totally on point" or would come back next week after asking his pharmacist who would confirm that a fact was totally on point XD in fact, on the topic of doctors not having deep knowledge of the medicines they prescribe, my friend mentioned that there's sometimes something that happens where a pharmacist will see a prescription, kind of think something weird is up and call the doctor and ask, "why are you prescribing all three of these? the first two kind of interfere with the third," and the response is along the lines of what you said. makes me appreciate skilled pharmacists a little more for what they can contribute to the system of healing other than just getting prescriptions filled...

This is one of my all-time favourite manga to date. I learned so much about medical science. As others have mentioned, there is an anime for this as well. As for other manga recommendations, Dr Stone sticks out to me. Medical stuff doesn't come into play for a while, but it was really cool to see if someone from our time could successfully make a cure-all drug in the stone world.

Wouldn't call it a cure-all since it most certainly has its limits, and bacteria can become resistant alarmingly fast when there's only one antibiotic being used, but it's certainly better than nothing.

Those electrical burns are also known to the American medical community as feather burns as they resemble the feathers of a bird. This rarely ever happens and when it does occur many doctors never see it before although they have heard cases and have seen some documents on it but never encountered it in a true case in front of them. Usually fluids, try to get the heart back up and running, and treat symptomatically is the treatment course. Because you don’t know the exact path the electrical blast took although you have a general idea due to the damage pathway you observe. Unfortunately there are worse electrical burns as certain electrical currents can fry everything including cells basically giving patients no chance at recovery. It’s a rare thing though thanks to safety constantly being drilled into our heads.

When my mum was diagnosed with lung cancer, she had similar symptoms. Her first diagnosis was pneumonia. Further tests upon admittance in the hospital confirmed lung cancer and they immediately started her on chemo. (Unfortunately, it was incurable so while she was able to go into remission a couple of times, eventually they just stopped the treatments, kept her on morphine for pain relief and she died after fighting for two and a half years.) Unfortunately, some illnesses can share symptoms which can lead to a misdiagnosis. Thankfully, Farma has that gift that allows him to determine the illness and variety of treatments that would be most effective so he doesn’t get it wrong the first three times and only manage through trial and error later.

I've already seen his version, so I'm interested in Dr Hope's interpretation of the manga. The anime follows the manga and only one drug near the end of the anime is changed from the original manga which confused the guy who was reacting to the series. He said that usually drug A is given, but here drug B which works though it isn't as good as drug A (I really don't remember the names of the drugs so that's why I'm using drug A and drug B as their names). Hmm, watched the anime of this, not sure hom many volumes it covers but it is far from finished anyway. Hmm... While Dr.Stone does not primarily deal with illnesses, it might be fun to cover one of the first "arcs" of the first season/whatever part of the manga volume that might be. The re-discovery of the cure-all. 😛

The Anime for this is great. Its certainly one of the better Isekais out there because it focuses less on blowing shit up and more on something that genuinely helps.

Squalane... if I remember correctly, a major source of it is shark liver oil. Is... Is it used very commonly in topical medications nowadays? As a vet tech who's a big supporter of using topical antibiotics to prevent systemic antibiotic resistance, but also someone with a fascination of and concern for ocean ecosystems, this is morally distressing 😨

I really enjoyed this video and read and watched this series after this review. There is an interesting korean comic about a person redoing his life as a doctor to become a successful doctor. The series is called Medical Return. You should check it out and possibly review the series as well
