I used to work in a florist when I was a teenager and customers used to always say how lovely it must be to work in such lovely smells. I didn't have the heart to tell them I couldn't smell any of them unless I put the flowers right in my nose and sniffed.

Same, Louise, except as chocolate shop manager for 20 yrs. Customers would always comment on the wonderful aroma but the only time I could smell it was for a few short minutes on return from vacation. The smell of couverture chocolate would even permeate my clothing, skin and hair by the end of day, which everyone could apparently smell but me.

The soap shop Lush can be smelled by people for quite a few yards away. Go into a stable and one can be bowled over by the not as nice a Lush shop smell. However after a few minutes one stops noticing the smell of both places after a short while

The tar also coats everything and will actually dull a person's sense of smell and taste. It's not just filtering it out, the smoking changed their senses. I smoked pot chronically for a long time, arguably something with a comparably bad smell. I couldn't necessarily smell it on me after smoking but I could still smell it in general and could smell it on others.

A lot of them hate it too. I smoked for several years. Hated the smell. Even worse is the smell of old cig butts. But when you're smoking, it kinda dulls that sense. And the longer you smoke, the more muted your taste gets.

In addition to those who like the smell (unless it's cigarettes from high quality pipe tobacco, I personally think they all stink), some smell it as something else as an odd association. My Mom smelled and tasted cotton candy when she smoked mid grade and packed her own cigarettes. The cheap ones she described the way I would for all of them; horse urine.

Glasses are like this on multiple factors. For one, you need to learn to tune out the frames. But the one non-glasses wearers probably don’t think about is that glasses affect perspective HEAVILY. After getting a new prescription, everything looks warped and depth perception is hard for a few hours to a couple days.
@pedromoura1446
@pedromoura1446 2 месяца назад
That only works until you get car sick. Then you're suddenly painfuly aware of the limit of the glasses frame XD
@user-do5zk6jh1k

This is why aviator frames are awesome. They cover most of your field of vision and the large curvature of the lens reduces warping.
@evilsharkey8954
@evilsharkey8954 Месяц назад
I notice every time I switch between glasses and contacts. My prescription is so high that I have a major parallax effect when I turn my head, my depth perception sucks, and things are shrunk so much that a quarter through contacts looks like a nickel through glasses.

Yea. Any time i walk without my glasses everything seems bend. Which is illogival cuz if anything my glasses are bending my view. so without them it shoukd be stright lines. But nope. my brain is overcoreecting for my glasses so hard that if im without them for a little bit things are warped. it doesnt really bother me except of walkig down the stairs. It messes with me so i end up walking next to a wall to have a better idea of where to the floor and wall am I. and its the same thing i did when i got those glasses at first. Xd

I don't think the skill is absent but rather, that it takes the brain longer to put perceptions to the side, which can be made worse with trauma. As ADHD brain owner and highly sensitive person (aka highly strung nervous system), I too, notice how it can takeme longer and how it's easier for me to get overwhelmed because it takes much longer. And yes, hyperfocus can sometimes lead to the protection not kicking in, but it's then focused on particularly negative perceptions, while a lot of other stuff is still fading out into the unconscious. :) So there's a spectrum to be found there and it being situational indicates that the ability is there but not always able to launch.

I personally do have this for some smells, but they still give me headaches. That's how sometimes I notice that the windows really need to be opened in a room. I don't have this for other senses though. I talked about that a lot with an allistic person, and he told me that sounds or visual imputs are generally tuned out / down if they're repetitive or annoying, which isn't the case for me at all. So I hear everything, from the constant buzzing to any random sound. Same for touch, I can't stand wearing slightly itchy clothing, leaving the tags on, having dirty hands, ect... I guess that's maybe one of the things that makes us more "detail oriented" than "big picture oriented" people. We see the trees first, then the forest

I myself am autistic. While audio and visual over-stimulation is a common expression of ASD, you can have both hyper (overactive) and hypo (underactive) processing of sensory and other information. I have next to no sense of smell, i am nose-blind to everything all the time and cannot smell unless it is right in my face. I also have pinpoint vision, so information in my peripherals is largely filtered out as "unimportant" by my brain. In contrast i do have sensitivity to sound as well as textures, particularly in my mouth (which makes eating certain foods very difficult). It is not that autistic brains lack the ability to filter and control information, but that the pathways responsible for transporting that information either have too many or too few connections.

Whenever i smell a new distinct smell or taste a new flavor my throat closes up just enough that i notice it, and i get a tiny bit light headed. Is this a "glitch" or a defence mechanism of some kind?
