Doctor Of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) 

As a DO, and an ophthalmologist in an allopathic (MD) program I found this a great interview. Touches on topics I wish I heard about when applying to medical school. Competitive subspecialties present with challenges for the Osteopathic medical student, but it can be done. Good luck!

I'm a 21 year old BSN nursing student right now and plan on going to medical school after, but was wondering if you thought that 26 would be too old to start medical school seeing that most people are 22-23.

Hey Andrea! First I just wanted to say I absolutely love your videos and being a Pre-med I find them very useful. I've learned so much from them, especially things I didn't know before. I was wondering from your Point of view, what is the best paitient care experience to do before med school? I plan on going to become a Doctor of course and some schools I've looked at don't require the experience, but they do want to see that you have an idea of what your doing in the field. I've looked at Medical Assistant and CNA. Someone I know is actually becoming a RN and then going to Med school. It's just been very confusing figuring what to do as far as that. I definantly want the experience whether it's required or not because you get an idea what it's like to work in that area and really see what you'll be getting into as time goes.

I am new to your channel as I am only in high school. But I am very much Interested in going into the medical field. I am pretty dead set on that. I want to either be a neurosurgeon or a cardio thoracic surgeon. I just love the idea of getting to change a persons life and make a difference. Getting the chance to help heal a person can be life changing. But I was wondering while you were attending med school did you also have a job? I also really enjoy watching your videos they help me better understand the process of getting through the process of getting into the medical field.

As a patient I once had a neck injury that was causing migraines I then went to an M.D. who proceeded to put me on muscle relaxers and pain meds after that didn’t work. I thought about a D.O. I used to go to as a kid and had him look at it. He told me to lye down he then proceeded to give me a neck adjustment and guess what? 1 day later no migraines. None since and that was 42 yrs ago. When the M.D. found out I went to another doctor his ego was blown. He had his receptionist tell me to take my business elsewhere. Which I was glad I did. This is not a put down concerning M. D.’ Just a situation unique to me . Been with D.O.’ ever since though 👍😃

Do you have a video that explains the timeline of med school in depth? I get confused about what year is intern year/clinicals/the four years of med school/residency/etc...

Are there any resources to learn about which specialities/residencies are most competitive in regard to MD vs DO students being accepted? For example, would urology or anesthesiology be harder for a DO student to gain residency vs MD?

DO program just exist In the US?

I am aware that allopathic and osteopathic medicine used to be completely different, but they sound pretty much identical today. Why does the division in schools/degrees still exist? Why can't students interested in OMM simply take those types of classes at allopathic schools? The "holistic" mindset is nice I guess, but it hardly warrants (at least from my perspective) an entirely different degree. Am I missing something?

If you were to go to an osteopathic psychiatrist could you have your head shrunk and get a terrific, bone-tingling back massage at the same time?

I understand that those who are DOs must feel like it's an uphill battle post degree. And I'll say that some DO primary care physicians are top rate. Some, I think have better people skills and are great for common conditions. However, for very specialized fields, as a patient I'm more comfortable with someone who has very scientific aptitude. When I see the average DO stats and see that DO schools are basically safeties if you can't get into MD, I'm less comfortable. That's not to say that someone who's a DO in a competitive specialty is weaker, they probably had to prove themselves after and they've earned it. But the latest stats that came out had average MCAT matriculants for DO at like 501 vs. 513 for MD? I'm gonna get a lot of downvotes for this, but that's a huge discrepancy. Unless the DO schools raise their standards after a merger, I just don't see how this would be fair to MDs.

“A totally different type of pathway to medicine..”??? Wow, the ignance is real! DO and MD is exactly the same, except that DOs also have to learn body manipulations. Plain and simple

Can you do a speech pathologist video?

The only times it's acceptable to go to a DO school is if a) fail to get accepted to MD, b) have some extenuating circumstance (e.g. family) or c) Are sure you want to practice OMM. Otherwise, you're hurting your chances for residency. DOs will soon not need to do extra stuff during residency as residencies are merging under one system.

Can you become an oncologist if you you get a D.O. Degree?
