It be fun to imagine what a female egg cell would be depicted as, as well as periods and what a terrible time it is for the red blood cells.

Probably a large round girl? But as far as periods... yeah, I imagine a lot of hopeful female blood cells carrying tons of nutrients, just hoping to see the egg get impregnated, but then... I wonder how does the brain even know when to release the different hormones? How does it even work to have a cycle like that?

Having been one of the team originally working on Viagra (although at that time it was just referred to as sildenafil citrate), it was a little sad when the team was disbanded due to some unpleasant side effects when used for its original purpose. The compound was effectively killed off as an R&D project. About a year later, the team was pulled back together again as a few people on the clinical trials had asked to be able to keep taking it as they said it had saved their marriage! I spent the next 5 or 6 years working on this (was a team leader at this point), and wrote a large chunk of the analytical package for the FDA and MHRA filings. Was a great project to work on. Thanks, Dr Hope, for reminding me of that time. Every one thinks that was the biggest drug for Pfizer, but at the time I left, it was only the 6th biggest ( in terms of income). Oh yes, and I think we'd heard all the jokes long before it was approved for use😁

I love how in many episodes, when every cell is celebrating that they got saved by medicine, the brain cell is thinking "yea we got saved, but the fact we needed saving in the first place is pretty bad". It's very foreboding to the habit some people have to seek temporary medication to symptoms of an underlying condition that needs much more serious measures.

Cells at Work does a really good job of anthropomorphizing what exactly goes on in the human body, and it shows the struggles that they face day in and out trying to keep the body working as best they can. It's hard not to get invested in their struggle. There's also sly criticism of the chronic Japanese work culture in there as well.

"Whoever created Cells at Work definitely had a smoke of a few things" It's kind of amazing how incredibly harsh Japan's drug laws and social stigma against drug users are (we're talking to the point that in the manga industry, owning child porn has literally been shown to be LESS career damaging than light drug use), and yet how much manga and anime absolutely looks like an acid-fuelled dream.

I don't know why _either_ ought to be very career damaging. Opium was once sold openly in drugstores even though its addictive properties were known. Addiction was seen as a private medical problem. As for the rather disturbing porn... I'm more concerned that coercion was used to create the material than the material itself. So saying one is worse than another doesn't impress me. Oddly enough, the stigma against drug users was influenced by the west. Specifically, they looked at America in the 60s and 70s and were like "we're better than that" (my speculation is that drug users were associated with dissent) and it evolved to current attitudes. Their modern Whaling practices are came from America. In the Edo and Meiji period whaling was very rare and most whales eaten were those that washed up. After WWII, general Macarthur told Japan whaling was really good and it got a generation of schoolchildren to love whale meat. I could talk about the panties obsession, but that story is rather long.
@HaganeNoGijutsushi
@HaganeNoGijutsushi 3 года назад
@@alex_zetsu well, yes, obviously the problem with child porn is that it implies child rape. There is an ongoing discussion and a lot more variety in terms of laws when it comes to _drawn_ child porn - which doesn't involve any actual person - but that wouldn't be punished in Japan. We're talking actual pictures or movies, which imply children being exploited or raped. So obviously even being a "customer" for it means being accomplices more or less directly in its creation, or at least incentivizing it. Either way it's very different from doing drugs, which is a truly victimless crime - a personal choice which however potentially stupid harms no one but the user.
@slook7094
@slook7094 3 года назад
@@alex_zetsu You're just showing how ignorant you are. The Opium Wars started because the emperor saw opium addiction as a national public health crisis and banned it, which pissed off the British. So no, the West didn't invent drug addiction stigma. Singapore is even harsher on drugs and will execute you. Even in the west, addiction was never seen as a "private problem." It was an epidemic among civil war veterans, which is why morphine addiction was known as "the soldier's disease." That's why we had the temperance movement. In fact, it was seen as a feminist issue because men would become addicts and let their families starve. Yes, it used to be sold on store shelves, as was cocaine. It was sold in the form of patent medicine. Alcohol was also prescribed as medicine. It's not sold anymore because the Food and Drug Act outlawed patent medicines and made it so ingredients had to be published. People also used to sell other humans as slaves in the town square, does that make it okay?

About that line at 1:34, I believe that is supposed to be a reference to how unhealthy this body is. We know that due to the smoking there is already a shortage of properly working, living red blood cells and the body's normal cells are already living on rationed oxygen. Since the amount of excess oxygen in the blood is already so low, diverting red blood cells to cause the erection will cause some regular cells to starve for oxygen and die. Which makes us really wonder just how unhealthy this guy must be to have that be true...

It’s not shown here, but I was initially confused by the scene in this episode when White Blood Cell 1196 shows our main Red Blood Cell to the epididymus, because it was my understanding that leukocytes need to be kept away from sperm. Sperm are different enough from other body cells that the leukocytes can identify them as foreign and attack them. The Sertoli cells are supposed to maintain a so-called blood-testis barrier so a man doesn’t develop antibodies to his own sperm. I was nervous about White Blood Cell being so close to the baby spermies! However, I just realized that the blood cells were only shown the nursery, before the spermatocytes have built their antigens. We -correctly afaik- don’t see blood cells even near the pool with the mature sperm that are ready to be ejaculated. Yay for Cells At Work accuracy!

Could it be that, The Megaloblastic red cell, its just another expression of this particular body being unhealthy, in the previous chapter we saw he has problems with the alcohol and I bet he does not eat healthy (lack of vitamins and minerals), so his red cell production would be affected as well, right?

Hey, I thought of another show that would be interesting for you to look at. It is called Limitless. It is about this guy who takes this drug that allows him to use 100% of his brain. I am kinda wondering how medically accurate it is, theoretically.
@BlueBoxMadMan
@BlueBoxMadMan 3 года назад
I can tell you right now. Absolutely inaccurate. Some already covered this. You are already using 100% of your brain. If you weren't you would be having serious problems.
@IceMetalPunk
@IceMetalPunk 3 года назад
It is zero percent accurate. The myth of "we only use X% of our brain" (usually cited as 10%) is nonsense. It comes from a gross misunderstanding of a study that showed approximately 10% of our brain cells are firing at any one instant. In reality, the next instant it's a different 10% set of cells firing. We use 100% of our brain. And I've had some people respond to that by saying, "Well, what if we could get 100% of our brain cells firing at once?" That's called a seizure. A massive seizure at that. With every brain cell firing at once, it would be basically guaranteed lethal. Brains work by the patterns of activity they produce; firing everything at once doesn't leave any room for patterns. ...sorry for ranting, I just *really* hate the whole "use 100% of your brain and become super-powered!" myth/trope.

@@IceMetalPunk A good allegory is that your brain is like playing the piano. You press a certain amount of keys in rhythm with each other to create a beautiful song, but if you just bash a large amount of random keys you just get a jumbled mess of noise and it sounds awful.
@IceMetalPunk

@@brandonlyon730 That's a good one. I'm a software developer, so the way I always think about it is if you set every bit in a file to 1, you lose all the information that file ever had.

And there is a good reason why all of the brain we have is needed. If we could do with less, we would have less. It takes about 20% of our nutrients, no matter what we do. Having more brain than needed would be a waste of resources that could be saved or used elsewhere. There are even studies that show that over the last 28000 years or so the average brain volume is actually decreasing.

I think the reason the bacteria and such is shown 'too big' often is to show it's not just a minor encounter, but rather something that's begun to spread and become a legit potential threat to the body. Thus a mini pseudo-whats-it (green one-eye thing) cuz it was a 'regular exposure'. Does that make sense?

I feel weird the fact that they make it so sad that every single ejaculation must have a purpose of reproduction While tbh most ejaculation was not really doing that purpose even for a healthy person And somewhat they shame this act of wearing condom or masturbation
@HaganeNoGijutsushi
@HaganeNoGijutsushi 3 года назад
Well, it's kind of inevitable if you anthropomorphise individual cells like this. Even in actual reproduction, only one of those sperms would fecund an egg, at most, anyway. Besides, if every red and white blood cell was some kind of little person there would be SO MANY things we do that just kinda waste their lives... pretty much any time you shed blood by hurting yourself more or less by chance it'd be a little genocide. Not sure about cutting your hair or fingernails since I think those don't have living cells, but something like scratching a scab definitely fits the bill.

@@Iden_Elihio_1999 The Cells at Work original series manga has a menstrual cycle in it. So that body is female, and apparently, it's the first one, pegging the body in that in their teens about? Also, notice that the protags for each match the physical and mental gender of the body. I kinda have a head canon going that this is what the original body looked like at a fixed age. Like the amount of scrapes, etc the female body goes through is because she's as clumsy as the red blood cell protag. It's also possible given the information we have that the Code Black Body is the father of the other body. lol But that's all head canon there.

I was wondering what the body for a lifestyle has: he smokes, he drinks, then he pops a pill and procreates. I also haven't seen spörms that have been damaged by alcohol. But i always imagined them riding aquabikes rather than being ducks with human faces. Spörm 1: "Alright! May the best of us win this race, guys!" (revs up his aquabike) Spörm 2: "You bet i will be the one!" Spörm 3: "DERP MY BLUEPRINTS!"
