Happy New Year everyone! I've been wanting to do this video for months, always wanting to be in my studio with everything looking and sounding right, but figured I couldn't wait any longer :) Thank you for all the support this year. X
One of the things I always liked about this episode is that the transfused blood cells are dressed for cold weather. That says to me that they were from blood that had been kept in cold storage.
Or given it is Japan and the different way of speaking there is a chance the blood is from someone living say in Hokkaido where it is usually a lot colder than Tokyo.
It wasn't in this video, but in the episode, the blood cells mention how they were pulled from their host body and centrifuged (high speed spinning/separation), therefore, they would have been in cold storage ready for transfusion. It's also why we probably don't really get to see the transfused platelets and plasma that Dr. Hope mentions Also, as someone who's read the manga, let me tell you that this isn't the only time you'll be seeing these new blood cells :)
I love the attention to detail in this series. Actual doctor: "Oh look at that text on the backpack of the adorable little platelet, that is-" _flashbacks to medical school lessons on clotting_
Fun fact, that might be lost on most english speakers; the blood cells from the transfusion not only has a slightly different uniform, they're also speaking in a different accent
@@peacefulinvasion684 Nah. It's most likely to make it clear that the blood comes from a different person. It's the easiest way to demonstrate that without outright saying it.
That story you told was the same for my mum when she gave birth to me. She took a lot of blood transfusions in order to survive and so she always tells me that we owe blood now. She can’t donate her blood due to certain issues, but I can. So I donate fairly often to make up for what was used to save her when I was born. And of course I don’t know the exact amount so I’ll just keep doing it, no reason to just meet the amount and then stop. Anyway good job gettin it done right before season 2 and black are going to air, and they’re going to be airing at the same time. Obviously you won’t be able to keep up with both as you’re busy and such, but I look forward to watching your videos on those too!
I'm also someone who, like your mum, cannot donate my whole blood, so I want to thank you, from the bottom of my _heart,_ (pun intended) for paying your blood forward, and helping to make up for those of us who will never be able to contribute as much as we need to take.
That's great. I don't donate blood but involved in phase 1 clinical trial (healthy volunteers) because you can only choose either one as the trial take amount of blood pretty much the same amount. But rather than one go, they jab us 3 times a day for however long the trial is 😅.
That's amazing! I'd love to donate blood, but I'm chronically anaemic (my doctor said that if we somehow managed to get it under control, then maybe I could, but it's not looking likely sadly).
I'm an universal donor too. But sadly, I don't fit the standar for donating blood T_T beacuse of my heigth and weight doesn't reach the minimum required in my country. But in here you are a donor unless you or your family said the opposite. So when I was 18 I decided to make sure anyone couldn't take away my right to donate and became a listed donor for organs in case of necesary. Also, I've make sure to tell everyone around me that I am a donor, is my right and I want it to be protected and respected. Hopefully someday i will be able to donate blood.
13:11 & 13:19 He puts on a brave face, but you can see Dr. Hope getting choked up! He cares for these precious red blood cell characters just like we do! I love it so much! ❤
I've got to admit, this was a hard one to watch. My grandmother died this way. She received massive trauma during a bad car accident. The doctors at the hospital did their best, but she was losing blood faster than they could transfuse, and the damage was too bad to fix. My mother had to give the doctors permission to stop giving blood. I think it was probably the hardest thing my mom ever had to do.
About a year ago, I was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia. Over the next six months, I did five rounds of chemotherapy, each one requiring me to receive several blood and platelet transfusions as my bone marrow rebuilt itself. I've now been cancer-free for almost half a year, and I am eternally grateful to the people who donated the blood and platelets that kept me going through my treatment. To all the blood donors out there, thank you. I kind of wonder how a show like Cells at Work! would depict the kind of leukemia I had.
This man was full of life at the beginning of 2020. He has been working so much overtime hasnt he. I dont know why I realized right now but checking his thumbnails through the months he progressively grows more and more tired.
I remember watching a video about secondary coagulation on Khan Academy once. The activation pathway was confusing as hell, and I remembered it for like only 5 minutes. Guess it's a good thing I'm not a medical school student...
One thing I love about the blood transfusion scene is that the new blood cells, on top of having different uniforms, also have a different accent from the native cells. It represents how the body they come from is a different region where these cells grew independently of the ones we've come to know and love in the show, thus they have a different accent. Another thing it could represent is that, in Japan, there's a belief that blood type impacts your personality. Them having different uniforms means they're a different but compatible blood type, so supposedly a different personality?
Finally, 2020 has completed. Fun fact: Around 18:08, the new RBC came from outer world, is speaking north-east accents in Japanese. If UK dubs exists, original cells speaking standard Rondon speakings, and the newcomers may speaking Scottish or Irish.
In the English dub, they all started to speak in Southern accents while Cherry (red blood cell) was talking in her usual neutral American accent. Loved the distinction!
Happy New Year doctor. I was waiting for this. ps. transfused red blood cells are also speaking in different dilect to further emphasize that they are foreign
In fact depending on the dub the dialect changes too. I think the Japanese was a northern japanese dialect and hokaido region. For the american english dub they are from the south
@@dontspikemydrink9382 they do that for like literally any Japanese dialect sadly. It kind of makes sense for Kansai or any southern part of the country but it really doesnt make sense in this context.
In elementary and middle school, it was a treat to watch “Bill Nye the science guy” and “magic school bus” in science class after a big test or just before a school break. I can definitely see this series being used for the same thing. I know if this series had come out when I took biology classes that I would have been more excited to learn about it.
Cant wait to see your reaction to Cells at Work Code black. Dealing with the body of an alcoholic, ED, blood transfusion and energy drinks among other things. My favorite of the manga by a long shot
Can't help but notice that he looks quite a bit more tired than in the last episode. Being a doctor in a pandemic must be reallhy exhausting. I really do appreciate that he found the time to complete this reaction series.
The most inspiring part about this episode for me is at the end, when that little red blood cell we've been following for the entire series shows uncharacteristic resolve, saying that while there's only so much she can do, as the world itself literally dies around her, she'll continue to do her job until she's no longer able. I've tried to adopt the same ethic. Not just death, she stared the apocalypse in the eye, and she didn't blink.
I really, really hope that this series will be accepted in schools as learning material. Honestly, as student, it was a pain for me to learn, how the body protects itself and I wish I had this anime to learn from 😭😅 It‘s just beautiful and now I can really say, that I can understand better, how our body works... Even so, I am still confusing veines and arteries 🤣
This... Somehow surprised me in that it makes so much more sense now that I was SO COLD after I had my son. I had a postpartum hemorrhage where I lost enough blood where I was juuuuuuuuuust on the precipice of needing a transfusion but not quite. And I kept needing more and more warm blankets cause I just couldn't get warm
Half a year in the making, so glad it's finally out. Love the explanations and how you broke down all the important scenes in this episode. Can't wait for your reaction on Cells at Work Season 2 and Cells at Work Black, thanks for your service Dr. Hope!
I've tried actually watching this anime for myself, but without the running commentary from this channel it just isn't the same. So here's to covering season 2 :-)
OMG! That happenes to me! After I gave birth to my second child I lost a looot of blood. I received 3 blood bags. Sadly I can't donate because I'm underweight but my husband and friends did it for me. Thanks to all the donators out there!!
I was just re-watching all of Doctor Hope's "Cells At Work" reactions on Christmas Day, wondering when he would upload the finale before Season 2 starts - and here it is!! Thank you so much :D I hope you have a Happy New Year, cheers from Ecuador!
These videos + Cells at work itself should be shown in schools, both are really educational. Cells at work for including things and these reaction videos for explaining the stuff that's going on.
Thanks for the video! I think during the pandemic Cells at Work, especially these last two episodes, make us *ordinary people* appreciate all the front-line workers out there even more, cause this is basically how they feel I imagine. The world is going through an enormous shock right now, just like the body in the series, and if not for all the front-line workers I can't imagine how bad it would've been for society. Thank you all so much, I wish the world could appreciate you more ❤️ Happy New Year everyone :)
If you mean the human body this takes place in. With the ease with which it catches various diseases and injuries, I assume it’s the average young child.
One of the first things I was told starting Medical Biology was: "The cause of every single death eventually comes down to a failure to maintain homeostasis."
The Black spin-off is so good too. It goes to greatly effective lenghts at portraying an unhealthy lifestyle's body, and does so in a way that makes viewers go "wait is this what's happening in my body just for doing this one unhealthy thing? ...I should stop". Even with full awareness of it being just a metaphor, it's just that damn effective at portraying the effects of bad life habits. a true goldmine. Also, fun fact! The blood transfer in this episode actually came from the body featured in Black! You'll notice right away that the uniforms are the same.
@@Dusk_Shade 1-it'd be after the end of Black, when things somewhat change. 2-imagine that your daily routine is fucking hell but you've gotten used to it, and you get relocated to a workplace that actually has it's shit together, wouldn't you be chipper?
@@OpXarxa First, Jesus that was a fast response. Second, you definitely have a point, but the thought would be that the poor guys would still have PTSD and such. Imagine the first time this body has alcohol, and all the transfused cells either break down sobbing or be like "ah shit, here we go again" Various portents of doom, the cells insisting that it's all downhill from there, etc. And getting dumped into a snowdrift seems like it would be pretty traumatizing too, ya feel?
Well done! Honestly, watching your analysis of this series helped me learn a lot about immunology. And knowing at least something about it helped a lot when Covid struck. I didn't feel quite so ignorant and helpless. You're a great doctor and a superb teacher, and if hospital work ever stops being an option for you I encourage you to strongly consider a classroom.
@@Gappasaurus that one, it's really ep 13 because the hemorrhage is ep12 divided into 2 parts (but it's considered ep12 because most animes only have 12 ep per year)
You hit the nail on the head about Cells at Work being a great ambassador for blood donation. One of our anime conventions has had a blood donation room set up with Cells at Work signs every year since the series came out. Congrats on finishing season 1; it's been lovely to see your enthusiastic response to the franchise. Hope to see more when the new series comes out.
I'm so pleased you finally got back to this series - yes, we KNOW you've been busy! God bless you and all the health care workers through this crazy time. I finally thought about coming to look for comments on the final episode now, in mid-March!
Experience and a passionate heart! Can't agree more!! I've given up my way to entering the health care industry mainly because I realized I do not have enough passion toward this occupation. Health care, as my opinion, is a job that you have to be extremely passionate to be able to handle. It's super stressful, even just as a student. I'm more of a language person, so I transferred my way to medical translation and interpretation. I can still put what I've learned in use and hopefully still participate a little bit to the lifesaving 🙂 Time to renew my first aid certificate 💪🏻
I do not regret the moment I clicked on your first react video to this series. I’m having a blast as a nurse watching another healthcare professional geeking out as hard as I did when I watched it. Take care of yourself. The Ray of Hope has begun to shine and we have a way forward out of the insanity of this pandemic. :)
Cells at Work Season 2 Cells at Work: Code Black Cells at Work Manga Final Chapter (COVID19 arc) Can't wait for Dr Hope to cover it all. 2021 is a promising year! ❤️
I had a blood transfusion i had a bad allergic reaction to the drug humira and my body crashed. My immune system was low, I was always so cold pale not getting enough oxygen or energy to my body and when i got the blood transfusion i felt warm and reenergized so i can validate this scene
Dear Dr. Hope's Sick Notes, Thank you for getting us through the tough times 2020 has given especially with this series that most of us "weebs" know & love! Never have I seen a doctor so determined to finish this little dumb request for an audience with a lot of deep curiosity in something educational & fun at the same time. Here to hope 2021 will be better! P.S. Ladies & Gentlemen! He's done it! He's one of us now! Stay Safe
I watched your whole S1 review of the show while working on homeworks and projects and it really helped me focus just listening to you geek out and review the show. This is better than any study music I could ask for 💚💚💚
Seeing you get all choked up over this episode was so heart warming. It made me reflect on how you've seen this scenario play out so many times. It makes me think you're a very compassionate person
Omigosh omigosh omigosh i’m so happy to hear you’re gonna do season 2 as well as Cells at Work Black!! This series was what introduced me to your channel and i ended up enjoying your other videos too! Excited to see how you’ll react to Cells at Work Black as it is supposed to be much, much, MUCH darker and more adult-oriented content
It's honestly been so endearing to see how emotionally attached to the anime up got and are Please keep up your great work and thanks so much for all your work this year I'm also so proud to say I donate blood and have done so since I was old enough to do so I hope it's helped save so many lives
I mentioned this in the comments of the last video, I cried to these last two episodes. Obviously, this episode is very sad, but the subject matter touched on something personal to me. My grandfather passed away last February from complications brought on by hemorrhagic shock. When I had heard about him being in the hospital, I dropped everything to go see him and was running around the hospital frantically trying to find him. When I found him, he was just lying there, hooked up to all these machines. On my way to the hospital, I received a text from my father saying that the sub-arachnoid was uncontrolled and that an elequis reversal seemed to be effective. Laymen's terms, the hemorrhaging had lessened. While at the hospital, I learned that my grandfather had a no resuscitation order in place that hadn't been honored so that news made his eventual passing a little easier to swallow. He died the day after my visit. I still have some regrets, some things I wish I had done while he was alive to see it, but for the most part, I've come to terms with it. I still get sad when I think about it, and these last two episodes definitely make me think about it.
Blood donation saves lives! My aunt had over 40 blood transfusions when my cousin was born. I myself had close to 30 transfusions due to an uncontrollable internal bleed.
Thank you for the reaction, your series made me love the anime and I learnt more than I thought. I started talking about immune cells to friends in conversation and they were surprised I was so good at biology. Haha. Thank you also for your hard work as a doctor for the NHS. I live in the UK as well and I think of all the doctors and nurses every day in these hard times. Stay safe and thank you!
Can't help but think about that woman losing so much blood after giving birth and what a common cause of death that has been throughout history. I often feel so much gratititude for how advanced modern medicine has become! ❤ Also touched about how emotional this review becomes!
Thank you for coming back to watch this episode with us. I know it’s been one HELL of a year for you. We owe you and other healthcare workers our deepest and most sincere gratitude. You are amazing.
OMG!!! Happy new year ❣️❣️❣️ I can't believe you've posted this, I've been re-watching your reactions to the series the whole of December 😁 thank you so much 😍😍😍
My mom had hemorrhages during both her deliveries (me and my sister) they saved her life, countless people donating blood saved my moms live. I really want to donate my own, I'm in the process, because while my body is perfectly okay to donate blood, I'm have an awful fear of blood, I get incredibly cold and dizzy and freaked out, I'm working towards it so that one day soon I can achieve it!! It is honestly one of the things I want to do the most, it sucks that my mind doesn't let me
I've been looking forward to this episode so much, what a wonderful New Years gift! I'm glad I'm not the only one who had an emotional reaction to the struggles of Red and her apprentice. Can't wait for the new season!
It's been a long journey. Episode 1 is what brought me to your channel. It's been wonderful watching your channel really take off from that point onward!
Finally! Been waiting for this!! I've never clicked on a notification faster in my life! Glad you are safe Dr. Hope! Thank you for all you do during these difficult times. :) Happy New Year to you!!
*Upsetting scene with red cell collapsing* Dr. Hope: NEW MERCH 😘 But joking aside, thanks for posting this! We know how busy you are right now, and you taking the time to teach us is greatly appreciated!
As a lab scientist who does the tests this doctor has mentioned(like CBC and blood grouping plus crossmatches) I found this series absolutely amazing. Going to have to check out the masks, I'm sure my other coworkers would love them too. I love seeing eosinophils in blood films, they're so colorful! XD
I dont know the reason but this episode always get me tear up for no reason. Mind you I never encounter any trauma or whatsoever. Only that my mom have complications from her pregnancy which transfer her to ICU and she need to transfuse 12 litter of red blood cell and 1 litter of white blood cell. But both my mom and the baby is healthy now 😊
