Personally, this is the most underrated story from Series 10. From time to time, we get Doctor Who stories that are like nothing we've ever seen before and, for me, Extremis was like that. It was surprising and tantalising from start to finish, and easily one of Steven Moffat's best. I know people like to bash on this episode because they think it's too Moffat-y, but I personally love the devices and tropes he uses in this episode, especially the whole simulation device. Plus, the ending/cliffhanger was perfect! - "How can I save them when I'm lost in the dark?"

SpookyGhostGoku of course but I’ve noticed lately with doctor who reactions early on that they don’t really have high energy or discussions on it and get hung up on time problems that seem logical for the show. They’ll say they like something but won’t elaborate much on those thought thread and talk about unrelated topics. And I feel that in the future maybe even after this season they’ll consider dropping it. Which I might prefer to zombie reactions sometimes.

Thomas Kelly I don’t know man. I just came off of a early access to next week and honestly the discussion part for me is what really is lacking in these reviews. One of the greatest episodes of this (or any) Dr. Who series! But I especially love the In Extremis saying: “Goodness is not goodness that seeks advantage. Good is good in the final hour, in the deepest pit, without hope, without witness, without reward. Virtue is only virtue in extremis”, and how it will be (very subtly, but with such impact) essentially “referenced” before the end of the season, if one pays close attention.

This was a GREAT episode, in both drama and comedy (I fucking love the Pope barging into Bill's bedroom, and the followup next week). It's a shame the rest of the Monk episodes don't really live up to its standard, because if they had it would probably be one of the defining arcs of Capaldi's run. Also, some fantastic attention to detail in one little instance; The Pope speaking Italian and needing the Cardinal to translate, instead of the TARDIS doing it automatically. Clearly the Monks hadn't QUITE worked out the details of the TARDIS in their simulation 100% lol

The UK officially uses Metric but a large part of the population casually uses imperial out of habit. Typically older generations Metric is the system used by computers, majority of sciences and engineering (internationally) which is why schools in the US get encouraged to adopt it.
@anonymes2884
@anonymes2884 4 года назад
The UK officially uses a weird, bodged together mix in fact. So we buy spirits in litres and vegetables by the kilo but beer (and milk) in pints. All kids are taught the metric system at school (and _only_ the metric system as far as i'm aware, aside from lessons on converting between systems) and science and engineering have been pretty much exclusively metric since the 80s but our speed limit signs are in miles per hour and lots of people, young and old, will still talk about e.g. people's heights in feet and inches and most distances in miles. We're a mess basically :-).
@TheMoonRover
@TheMoonRover 4 года назад
Yeah, the UK _officially_ uses metric, but road signs use miles, yards, mph. People still measure their height in either metres or feet/inches, and their weight in either kg or stones/pounds. Food labels are always metric, but generally also list energy in calories, and the sizes might correspond to exact imperial measurements, for instance 454g or 568ml for 1 pound or 1 pint.

@@TheMoonRover One of the "UK-isms" that tickles me is the stopping distances chart in the Highway Code - it lists the speeds in mph (with km/h in brackets) and then the stopping distances in metres (with feet in brackets). No wonder people from abroad think we're all bloody mad :-).

About the Simulation, to keep it simple: If intelligent life doesn't kill itself and survives long enough to create a simulated universe, our chance to be real shrinks to 1 in 2. But, if you could, why would you only simulate one ? you wouldn't. you would run like a few hundret thousands or millions of tests... 1 to x million chance to be real. On top of that: Schrödingers Cat. As long as the box is closed, the cat is dead and alive, because the simulation doesn't need to waste power on it as long as no one looks.
@markhackett2302

The cat is a macro scale object. That means its quantum state is always decohered by its own self. The cat is dead as soon as the cat's body is dead. Shroedinger made up his cat to show how the Copenhagen interpretation was a load of BS. Not as an example of how it was right.

Feet and Inches are annoying for me. I am from England and all through school I was taught in Millimeters and Centimeters but 30 years before me in this country we still used the old system of Feet and Inches. The problem is there is still generations of people taught in a different measuring system and some work places still work under those rules because the people in charge are from an older generation. Over the summer I worked in a wood yard and customers would come in and ask for planks of wood or what ever in Feet and Inches. I wouldn't have a clue what that was so I had to get someone to help me and it just made me feel stupid. He was trying to teach me but it was hard to get into my head and hard to work out on the fly since I am bad at maths as it is. Glad I don't work there anymore.

Some info on simulation theory if you're interested: One way I've seen simulation theory argued is this: Imagine some super advanced alien civilization (or ancient humans that were super advanced) that decides to simulate a universe with some sort of super advanced computer. If they let their simulation run long enough, the beings in that simulation might get the same idea and make their own simulation, and so on and so on. With that idea in mind, it is MUCH more likely that WE are in one of the potentially infinitely-many nested simulations. After all, there is only one original universe and a bunch more simulated ones. That is not necessarily science, just a logical argument inspired by the following actual science: Simulation theory, as far as I can tell, is inspired by an actual scientific principle called the "Holographic Principle." The idea is that, if we look at the surface of a black hole (the event horizon), we run into LOTS of issues. The biggest one is the fact that, if black holes truly never die and thus never re-release their material back out into the universe, then they violate conservation of information. Quantum mechanics, among other things, tells us that information about the states of particles (or anything) must always be conserved. You must always be able to, at least in theory, take some amount of information and determine the previous state of that information. Now you see the issue: if stuff falls into a black hole and is forever cut off from the external universe, that is a massive loss of information. Black holes are only characterized by three things: their electric charge, their angular momentum (spinning), and their mass. Any other information about the stuff that falls in is lost at the event horizon. Now, finally, the holographic principle. One idea to solve this black hole "information paradox" is to consider the surface of the black hole. You can do some math and determine that all of the information that falls into the black hole is actually preserved on the surface of the black hole, which itself is a 2-dimensional surface in 3-d space. Thus, it's almost like the 2-d information on the surface is "projected" into the center to create a 3-d image. In that way, one could argue that the entire universe might only be a 3-d looking PROJECTION, projected by information on some very, VERY far away 2-d surface. That's all a very simplified explanation of it, but I hope it makes some sort of sense to you. Basically, the illusion of 3-d space (illusion might be the wrong word: it's identical) can be generated by a projection of information on a distant 2-d surface. Once you consider that, it's a hop skip and a jump to thinking that we live in an actual projected simulation.

"It says height but it does it in meters, it says weight but it does it in pounds." Oh trust me, that's not the Doctor's glasses being weird, that's just the British measuring system being a complete fucking mess. Where America uses Imperial and Europe uses Metric, Britain is stuck in some weird in-between purgatory of measurement after they kinda tried to switch to metric in the 70s but half-assed the implementation. Bathroom and kitchen scales weigh people or food in pounds by default, but doctors will measure you in kilograms. Clothes sizes, height, and furniture are measured in metric units, but if you're giving someone directions or talking about the distance between places, it's basically always feet and miles, and speed limits on signs are in miles per hour too. Gasoline is sold by the liter but drinks by the ounce. As a non-Brit currently living the UK, I can confirm, it's sometimes absolutely maddening trying to guess which one you're supposed to use for what lol.

Leave it to *Blind Wave* to watch _Doctor Who_ with their eyes (a pair each, held inside their heads with their faces, peeking out at the screen). Them and their _head eyes._

Simulation Theory is a bit tricky to grasp, but it essentially goes like this: With how quickly technology is advancing, it is predicted that, eventually, humans will be able to create simulated worlds just as advanced and complex as our own, with simulated people just as advanced and complex as ourselves. We’ll essentially be able to create life! At which point, those worlds we create would go on to grow and create perfectly simulated worlds of their own, which in-turn would grow and go on to create perfectly simulated worlds of _their_ own, which in-turn would- You get the idea. The Theory is that, if there is only _one_ “real world” and an infinite amount of perfectly simulated “fake worlds” spawning from it, then the chances of us being that ‘one in infinity’ are pretty slim at _best._ If you believe in statistics, then _technically_ you should also believe that this universe is just one massive simulation.

Supposedly it’s meant to hint it’s a simulation, and also he should be speaking Latin.

This arc is clunky as hell and rough in spots, but I can't help but love it.

The idea is brilliant, the actual writing is rough. I didn't really like the speech about how video game characters feel it, it's a terrible and forced analogy. We already understood the concept, they just tacked on this weird idea that characters in our video games know.
@ElricGameplays

It's not a weird idea, they do know. They just don't know the same way we do, what Mario in Super Mario knows is he's supposed to go right when you press right on the controller, the same way we know to react when you touch a hot stove or something. The enemies move left to right and right to left because they've been programmed to do so, essentially *thinking* they should move left to right and right to left.

It's just the UK, don't flatter yourselves. They use both systems but older people used to metrics. Everyone else in Europe and most of the other countries use the metric system. Cause it MAKES SENSE!

13:28 - It's Bern-STINE; the second syllable deriving from German for stone = "Stein" (rhymes with mine, wine, pine, etc). Pronouncing "Stein" as "steen" is inauthentic, even if the person/familly concerned has been conditioned to say it that way.

To be honest it hella annoyed me that mummies made Pope's English so lackluster. Like come on - for last decades we had literal polyglots, and with English being so popular language nowadays - it's obvious it will be the main language Pope have to know in the best way possible, and the actor looks as if he doesn't even understand what he is talking about. Other than that - I still feel like this should have been double episode and not trilogy - like whole finale and most story for Bill was so trashy. Villains also were pretty lackluster comparing to the concept Extremis was giving us. Like after watching this episode I was really hyped about them, and then they were just soo mediocre...

@jacobhogan3208 4 года назад
The actor understands English, and a few things. 1: The most spoken is Mandarin 2: The Pope lives in Vatican City, a country since the 20’s that speaks mostly Latin. 3: The Pope only usually speaks Latin and has to be translated. . 4: The Vatican is bordered on all sides by the country of Italy so it should be Italian if anything along with the country he was born into’s Language.

@mjm3091 4 года назад
@@jacobhogan3208 1. Doesnt matter when most people speaking Mandarin are native speakers who dont leave China in their whole life. English is the most wide-spread language used by non-native speakers. 2. Pope is talking to British girl and to alien that is known for his British Police Box. On top of that Tardis should have translated it to English either way. 3. Not really. Especially when being outside Vatican City, last few Popes always tried to speak the language of the people. 4. It should be English, cause Tardis translates everything, usually not even leaving the accent. I mean I know the actor and some of his other roles, it doesnt change a fact that Monks should have done it better and the character of the Pope should have been written way better.
