And Paula thought she'd have to wait until the end of series 10 to find out what's in the vault.. Well isn't she in for a surprise today! Seems there may be something else on the horizon as well...

“Doctor! Here's a tip. When I'm on a date, when that rare and special thing happens in my real life, do not, do not under any circumstances, put the Pope in my bedroom!”

Extremis is great. The Doctor watches an episode of Doctor Who. Can't think of anyone but Moffat who could write something like that.

I think the in-universe explanation for the 1960s Dr. Who movies (with Peter Cushing) is that the Doctor was telling stories about his life and Peter got them made them into movies. The Doctor was even an on-set consultant. :)
@chiffon788
@chiffon788 2 года назад
@@firefly24601 yeah, the movies are canonized by the novelization of Day of the Doctor. Kate Stewart says the Doctor loves the movies and loaned his good friend Peter Cushing a waistcoat for the sequel. There were plans to include the posters in the actual episode, but they couldn't afford the rights.

The actor for the Pope is the same actor as the man who took Donna's family in when London was destroyed by the Titanic.

I’m surprised this episode doesn’t get more love. It’s such a clever concept. Just like a pilot before they fly a real plane, the monks make a simulation of Earth to practice conquering it. It really delivers on why everyone kills themselves after they read the Veritas. Not only did the reveal surpass my expectations, but I also thought “if I read that, I’d kill myself too”.

Wow - the internet has started to evolve! I came on here ready to defend this episode against the collective opinion which pervaded at the time and for most of the years since... but I see nothing but positive comments!??? (....and we're 21 comments in and nobody has told us where we saw the actor who plays the Pope before!?) Changed times indeed!

(I loved seeing the actor again, myself. But as a Classic Who fan, seeing the same actors over and over in the show doesn't really phase me.)

@@youtubeaccount697 There was a lot of anger towards this episode at the time for it turning out to be "only a simulation." Many of the comments from reactors were along the lines of "Duh... it wasn't real - that's such a cop out" - a view-point which really baffled me when "Heaven Sent" is essentially a series of simulations and is held in such high regard. I think we were just at the height of "anti-Moffatism" at this point in time!

A complex puzzle-box narrative, the kind of which Moffat can (and probably does) do in his sleep, bouncing back and forth between the Doctor, at two different low points in his life, forced into a position where he has all hope stripped away from him, and faced with the question of whether or not to continue doing the right thing. Series 10 has been incredibly strong so far, but with "Extremis" this run of episodes reaches its highest peak up to this point. The whole narrative of the Doctor, Bill and Nardole going into the depths of the Vatican to learn a dark secret about the nature of reality is brilliant stuff, and exactly the kind of dark high concept mind-fuckery that made us all fall in love with Moffat's scripts in the first place. There's a cavalcade of fascinating ideas being thrown in the audience's faces, and the Vatican library is the perfect gorgeous yet creepy location to act as the main setting for this mysterious Da Vinci Code-esque conspiracy thriller. The mystery is really compelling, with all these disparate plot threads - the Veritas, Cern, the Monks - all being brought together, leading very naturally to the brilliant reveal of the entire world being a simulation. The twist is genuinely surprising, and it makes it all the more powerful when the "Doctor" decides "without hope, witness, or reward" to save the day anyway. Capaldi's performance is fantastic as per usual, putting in all these little touches that demonstrate the Doctor's blindness in a clear visual fashion. The Monks are a fantastically creepy antagonist here, even as their motivations and plans remain unknown to us, there's some pretty great comedic moments, and the music is wonderfully atmospheric and mysterious. There's oddly not as much for me to say about the Missy stuff, since it's mostly there to answer the question of "what's in the Vault" (glad we've sorted out that mystery box early on), and set up the rest of the series. All the same, I do like a lot of these scenes, Missy is always a delight to watch, and Michelle Gomez is fantastic, especially in the way she shows the quiet desperation in her pleas to the Doctor to let her live. I also like how we're still getting all these little moments showing that the pair do still consider each other to be friends, from Missy offering her condolences upon learning of River's demise, to the Doctor again making the choice to stick to his moral code and save her life. If there was any doubt in my mind before hand, this episode officially cements Capaldi/Gomez as perhaps the best Doctor/Master pairing in the history of the show

That line The Doctor gave about characters in video games that I kill thinking they’re real. Feeling the suffering…wow that haunted me more than some of the really scary villains we’ve seen in the show.

I wasn't too crazy about this arc of season 10, the Monks weren't all that interesting outside that first VR episode, but the character development, and stuff in the background, Doc's blindness etc was so good.

I feel like the build up was great for this, both first and second episodes actually upped the tension, but the end result was hella underwhelming. I wonder, if this would be better, if we had proper backstory episode for Bill, maybe something similar to Father's Day for Rose, that would have created the relation between Bill and the "stock photo woman" more. Either that or I wish we had episode with her adopted mother - to fill the role better. Like that would not only be a nice medsage but also would justify the finale at least somehow?

IIRC Moffat was dealing with some serious personal issues at the time (death in the family) and couldn't give all the Monks episodes the final showrunner polish they needed. He expressed regret about it.

Another underrated episode! There's a reason why it doesn't rank as high as it should, but a great 'meta' idea where reality is questioned! And the reveal of Missy being the one locked up wasn't dragged out all season. Love Nardol and Bill!!!

You recently discover you might be a lesbian. Due to your highly religious upbringing you feel like you're doing something wrong but you take that chance to discover who you are. You meet a nice woman that seems more experienced than you and you go to her place. You're not planning on doing much, but you enjoy her company and you're still very nervous but excited and you've shoved all the religious mumbo-jumbo out of your mind... And then the fucking pope walks out of her bedroom. I'd nope out of there too.. that poor woman

14:35 "Can we watch next episode, now?" - oh, no... Bestie this is three parter. And about episode - I love this episode and concept behind it, kinda sad that the other two episodes in Mummy trilogy weren't as good as they could have been, especially the finale was like meh - wish they did more with Bill, maybe another episode about her backstory instead of the wood alien roaches would do so much more for this season.
