The 9th doctor is criminally underrated in the pantheon of doctors, imo, and Christopher Eccleston deserves heaps of credit for hooking in a whole new generation of Whovians for how likeable he was in this role. I wish he had a few more dramatic scenes in his short run, but oh man was he amazing when he got to flex his dramatic chops. Thanks for the walk down memory lane, Jules. This was fun to rewatch with you.
I grew up with Pertwee and Baker, they were the ones I was really old enough to bond with, but leaving them aside, I think Ecclestone is my favourite. Just the perfect blend of humour and pathos.
The best way to rewatch these episodes is with someone who is seeing it for the first time. You bring back the joy we had the confusion the fear. We know what’s happening. But with you it’s like we get to be new.
Remember, this is the 9th Doctor. He's beaten that many Daleks before - more than once - in his other incarnations, and they know it. Which is why he knows they won't kill Rose just yet because she is their only bargaining chip. The Daleks are actually terrified of the Doctor, he's like a folklore demon to them, thwarting them throughout their history :D
The Doctor is probably the one being in the universe that scares the Daleks, simply because he has thwarted them again and again. And as he says in this episode, he usually does so without any weapons or tools or much of a plan before he starts working to stop whatever their current plan is to take control of the universe. Also, just to clarify, the Daleks are not robots. While they are encased in an armored shell, they are still biological creatures. In the Season 1 episode "Dalek" we got to see what they now look like briefly, before that Dalek committed suicide at the end of the episode.
@@robertmartin9029 Quite true, the Kaled scientists that developed them classed them as "Travel machines" for the mutants. ("Genesis of the Daleks" 1975)
It's such a pleasure as a seasoned veteran Whovian to re-watch these through complete fresh, innocent eyes. These quickly turn into my favorite day of the week.... Let's just all agree to never spoil a thing (except for some jokes maybe. I think some jokes could be allowed 😅) 👍
Thank you!! I am so happy to hear that 💜 It really gives me a burst of energy to keep going when I know I have people like you that enjoy the episodes!!
This episode has two of my absolute favourite 9th Doctor moments. Obviously one is that speech at the end, but the other is "And with that sentence you just lost the right to even speak to me". I just love how he has absolutely zero time for the "we're just doing our jobs" excuse. Your reaction series is probably my favourite on RU-vid at the moment. I love finding new people who get into the series and it's a joy to watch someone so invested in it and the characters.
Dalek Fun Fact: The Daleks are the longest lasting Doctor Who villain, having made their first appearance in the story "The Daleks" back in 1963, the second serial of the first season. It's not until their third appearance that they recognize the Doctor as their greatest enemy, and by the same serial they've developed their own Time Machine. In their first appearance, the Doctor is willing to give them the benefit of the doubt as he didn't know anything about them at the time and they hadn't yet done anything too bad and by their second appearance the Doctor war more wary of them but not yet as downright terrified as he was in "Dalek" of Modern Who but the Daleks didn't recognize him yet
Doctor Who has a lot of GREAT reaction series on RU-vid. A lot of us have been through them all and want to see more, so we get super excited when someone new, who is producing high quality content and has an engaging and fun personality, comes along. People like you actively make the Doctor Who community a more enjoyable place, so thanks right back at ya :)
Exactly. And Jules is quickly catapulting herself into being one of my all time favorites. I started watching Chique Geeks all the way back, then Sesskasays, Torchwood Boy, failwhale34, JustSoShayla and so on... 😅 Blind Wave of course. I'm probably forgetting someone important right now, but I must admit. Jules is actually currently my favorite of them all.😅 She fits SOO perfectly in our fandom, without ever being any weird, cringe or over the top. She's just lovely. And most people here in the comment sections seem to be, too. Very friendly, fair and lovely.... 🥰
@@chanceneck8072 couldn't agree more! Don't forget Lukeyread and Deepa 😄 Another great UK Dr.Who reactor I've been watching recently is HamzaReacts -- give his stuff a watch if you haven't already. He's a lovely lad who's trying to find a job at the moment. I'd love to see his channel get a bit of a boost!
@@chanceneck8072 I feel EXACTLY the same, even having watched all those you mentioned and more. Jules has quickly become my favourite in just one series/season. I'm really looking forward to seeing more!
Wow, thank you so much!! I am so, so lucky you think so and it's an honour to watch this alongside so many wonderful people who are lifelong fans 💜 thank you for allowing me into your world so graciously!
I'm not sure if people have mentioned Murray Gold, Doctor Who's composer, but the part where the Doctor tells the Daleks he is going to save Rose is where you really begin to see how epic Gold's music can be. It's great throughout Season 1 but here is where you see how important he is to the show's formula from here on out.
The two biggest stories in the classic series that relate to the creation of the Daleks were "The Daleks", aka "The Dead Planet", from 1963, where the 1st Doctor encounters them on their home planet Skaro for the first time. And "Genesis of the Daleks" from 1975, where the 4th Doctor ends up witnessing their birth during a centuries long war on Skaro. (We only see a Dalek production line building Daleks once. In "The Power of the Daleks" 1966.
Trivia, the Anne-droid was Anne Robinson who hoated the UK weakest link. The voice of the big brother was Davina who did the voice in the UK, and Trinny and Suzanna had a make over show in the UK, so at the time rhis was on we all knew who all the droids were meant to be.😂
That cliffhanger is where Christopher Eccleston completely owns the Ninth Doctor,a huge punch the air moment...and watching this back in 2005 for the first time was edge of the seat stuff
Love this episode! Jack was in a Trinny and Susannah makeover show called What Not to Wear. The robots were voiced by the real UK hosts as were The Weakest Link android and the Big Brother voice -- a little dated now, but at the time of airing, they were all very recognizable figures and TV shows in the UK! I didn't expect you to know The Weakest Link in Australia! Also, the whole Dalek origin story is in Classic Who! They're from a planet called Skaro and were created as war machines by a psychopath called Davros who kind of turned himself into a part Dalek. He died in series 12 of classic who. That's all you need to know...for now :-)
Yeah, we had Big Brother and The Weakest Link here, but the Aussie versions 🤣 That was really cool! I didn't ever watch What not to Wear, but I've heard of the show. I'm vaguely familiar with Trinny and Susannah from fashion magazines back in the day haha. Such a great episode!! Well, I'm glad Davros is gone! He sounds like a nasty piece of work 👿
Someone probably already said this but the TV show Captain Jack Harkness was on was Trinny and Suzanna, a fashion makeover show presented by Trinny and Suzanna. They have often been spoofed and parodied throughout the years. You should also look up a video of Trinny who, during the pandemic, goes shopping and absolutely just cacks into a glass door at Zara and just goes on with the video as if it didn't happen.
👍 love how quickly you deduced what always going on with Rise, the dust in the floor fooled me first time around. For classic Who fans the sounds of the Dalek ship gave away the twist when Rose woke up on their ship. That block ground sound is in every Dalek episode going all the way back to the very first Dalek episode.
Adding daleks into regular gameshows would definitely make things more interesting! 😂 Hope you enjoyed this episode and are looking forward to the conclusion. As always your reaction was refreshing and takes me back to when I first watched these early episodes
So glad you enjoyed this episode prior to the finale, it is so good. And it doesn't matter how many Daleks there are, The Doctor will not stand for it: DALEK: I will talk to the Doctor. DOCTOR: Oh, will you? That's nice. Hello! DALEK: The Dalek stratagem nears completion. The fleet is almost ready. You will not intervene. DOCTOR: Oh, really? Why's that, then? DALEK: We have your associate. You will obey or she will be exterminated. DOCTOR: No (Everyone looks at the Doctor.) DALEK: Explain yourself. DOCTOR: I said no. DALEK: What is the meaning of this negative? DOCTOR: It means no. DALEK: But she will be destroyed. DOCTOR: No! Because this is what I'm going to do. I'm going to rescue her. I'm going to save Rose Tyler from the middle of the Dalek fleet and then I'm going to save the Earth, and then, just to finish off, I'm going to wipe every last stinking Dalek out of the sky! DALEK: But you have no weapons, no defenses, no plan. DOCTOR: Yeah. And doesn't that scare you to death. Rose? ROSE: Yes, Doctor? DOCTOR: I'm coming to get you. See you for the finale!
There's a story in the original series that examines the origins of the Daleks. It was a 4th Doctor episode. They're also the oldest Doctor Who villains, they were were the first real antagonists that the 1st Doctor encountered at the very beginning of the show.
Daleks - classic Doctor Who characters introduced in the second story "The Daleks" in 1963. 4th Doctor era covers origin and creator of the Daleks. 5th Doctor continues plot threads and threat to Gallifrey. 7th Doctor era was darkest with best story "Remembrance of the Daleks". We are normally introduced to DW with best stories on TV or at convention video rooms or at club meetings. We can let this be revealed in New Series over time in this format.
In Dr. Who the Daleks first appered in 1963. Right at the beginning of the Season 2 of the original Dr. Who Series back then. In their lore they come from a Planet called Skaro. They are said to have been said they looked completely different. But an Atom war let them mutate into these little octopus like aliens. So they use this robot shell to compensate the loss of the original bodies. They got these bodies from a Scientist called Davros - who also is an everlasting enemy of the doctor. For the 2005 remake getting the Daleks back was very important because they are definetely fan favorites.
Regarding how the Daleks were created, you might have to watch a 20th century Doctor Who story called "Genesis of the Daleks" featuring Tom Baker as the Doctor.
Russell T. Davies did a magnificent job of building up to this episode in Season One. Pulling together elements from the Doctor and Rose's story, with "Dalek" and the "Long Game" (which didn't seem like an important story at the time) into a fantastic episode. I still remember the first time I saw the Dalek in the reflection, the reveal of the thousands of Dalek ships, and, best of all, Eccleston's powerful speech ("Yeah, and doesn't that scare you to death"). Still amazing to watch. Thanks for your insights and reactions!
I remember when I first saw this episode and thought Rose died, I was so upset cuz I really liked her, I was debating on whether to finish it or not. When I found out she was alive I cheered so loud but my joy turned to fear when I saw that blue eye of the Dalek. You'll love the second part and I can't wait for your reaction on that.
This and the next episode are magnificent. Among the best episodes. And though there are many amazing speeches by The Doctor over the years, Eccleston's "NO!" speech is one of my all time favorites.
The show that Jack was in is a show called "What not to wear" hosted by Trini and Suzanna. You are correct that it's a fashion/design show. They got all the actual quiz/game show hosts from the real shows to voice their robotic counterparts. It's funny that you described Captain Jack as "anything goes" because the actor who plays him, John Barrowman got his first professional acting gig playing the male lead in Anything Goes on stage. It's also the name of his auto biography.
Jules ... I love this so much ... sharing these episodes with you !!! You were VERY good, anticipating things and keeping your faith in the characters when the episode made it look like it was going to go a completely different direction. Awesome. I told you before, and I'll say it again, you are a very bright person, and it is a pleasure watching you react. Can't wait for more ... 😉😊🌹
Awww thank you, Steve!! I'm so glad to have had you here for almost this whole season! It's been such a wonderful journey for me but the good news is that it is far from over 🥰 have an awesome weekend!!
This video has a crazy amount of comments, so congrats! Im not sure if anyone said anything, but you did something cool unintentionally. In the recap you called Lynda, Tanya. The actress is most known for playing a Character called Tanya in the British Soap, EastEnders. She had many big storylines and was in it for years, so it was really random you calling her that 😂
'"We can't help it it's just our jobs!" "And with that you just lost the right to even talk to me" hhhh that resonated with me so much. So much injustice comes from the majority of people 'just doing as their told'
The origins of the Daleks was answered in Classic Who, so you'd have to either look it up, go back and watch some of those old episodes, or ask your audience if you want us to tell you.
Loved watching your reaction... especially your summing up at the end - How is the Doctor going to get out of this situation?!?! That was my childhood, growing up watching Doctor Who in the 80's in Australia, where thanks to repeats as well as the new episodes, it was almost year-round Doctor. Going to school the next day and debating with my friends how on earth was the Doctor going to get out of this one! :) Also love that you obviously don't know old-Who, because - the Daleks ALWAYS come back... ever since the beginning of time... they always find away. (The ratings are just too good lol)
The woman known as "the Controller" in charge of the entertainment satellite rescuing and preserving The Doctor is a very subtle joke on the way that the series Doctor Who was rescued and brought back to BBC One in 2005 by Lorraine Heggessey whose official job title was "Controller of BBC One"!
To answer your question where do the daleks come from you should check out the classic Doctor who story Genesis of the Daleks. It's a fourth doctor story.
I'm so glad you've been enjoying the Doctor Who journey. I've equally as enjoyed your reactions to them. You're a certified Whovian now, you get your own Sonic Screwdriver. LOL and you're only on Series 1. You've got a fantastic journey ahead of you.
I love this episode on multiple levels - the solid future parodies of shows that were current in 2005 when this first released - Big Brother, The Weakest Link, and What Not To Wear were all very funny, but with a deadly twist! The robot versions of various TV hosts (The Anne-Droid is of course the equally merciless Anne Robinson, the Davina-Droid is Davina McCall from Big Brother, and then we had TRIN-E and SUSAN-R for Trinny and Susanna, the hosts of What Not To Wear) were very well built (in a funny way) and voiced by the actual TV presenters themselves if I recall correctly. The way the Doctor acts from the moment Rose dies until Jack explains the secondary transmat system is amazing. Just the embodiment of cold fury. And of course we have the Bad Wolf connection finally nearing its moment of truth, and the return of the Daleks en masse! You saw how deadly just one badly damaged and mutated Dalek could be! This is a force of pure, undamaged Daleks at full might! But the Doctor's "I said No." Speech will always take the cake. The pure defiance, I love it! An even better speech than Eccleston's last great speech of "Everybody Lives!" In my opinion. Doctor Who is a show of many amazing speeches but this one still sticks out fresh to me every time I hear it. By the way, they did actually make a special Doctor Who themed episode of the Weakest Link! I believe the whole thing is on RU-vid and it's very funny, so I'd wholly recommend checking it out, but only once you're done with Series 2 since it has some of the characters and actors from that series in it!
Hello, Jules.💜 One of my very favorite patterns this day! We have finally gotten to the big bad wolf! I'm ready to see it again!😛 Not much to say here, Jules. This is a great build up to the second part. The consistency of the writing and overall story lines, for this series is almost always the best. This is a great two-parter and I cannot wait to join up with you when the next one rolls around. I love your ideas, summations, and prognostications. You're doing very well at this point. There is one moment I truly did enjoy, and it may be the most enjoyable reaction this season! You are certainly Not the Weakest Link!🥰 Face of Boe indeed.😍 You really have been immersing throughout this whole season... The Face of Boe! Grand Job, Jules!🤣 !2:20, even greater thrill for me than your almost instantaneous recognition of the Dalek, looking at Rose.😝😝 A great episode, and a great moment for me, thanks to you. Have a great Thursday, Jules.💜 You have made my Wednesday, absolutely fantastic.🤗😊
Tom 💜 Hehe!! I really like this dress, too. It may not come out too much more as right now it's 7am, I'm wearing a singlet and shorts (pj's haha) and it's just not cold anymore 🤣 So long, winter! It's been... there, somewhere? I tried so hard to answer the questions!! I was a bit like Rose... no clue, no hope, but trying very hard 😅 Thank you, Tom! I'm so glad you liked this one. It's pretty much the first sci-fi thing I've ever watched... If you don't count Firefly, but that was different! That was VERY different 🤣🥰 A lot of the scenarios and places and people are out of this world (literally), so you really have to put reality aside and just enjoy whatever weird thing we're about to see! Having someone human like Rose really adds such a great element. I feel she sort of allows the viewer to experience it through her eyes. It really is fantastic 😸
Yes, Jules. I agree with you on the through her eyes idea. The first time viewer knows no more than Rose, and she generally has the same questions which occur to the viewers, so it all works out very well. As for the rest, just sit back and enjoy the ride. I am very happy that you are enjoying this show. It has been one of my top series since I first saw it, and there is nothing out there that does what this show does, as well as it is done here. I'm forever pleased you came aboard, Jules💜
Your enthusiasm and excitement is so infectious, Jules. As others have said, you make all these episodes we know so well seem shiny and new and I'm enjoying it so much. Re the show Captain Jack was on - it's a parody of What Not to Wear which was presented by Trinny Woodall and Susannah Constantine. It was huge in the 2000's. And yes, Jack is an equal opportunities flirt! :)
To understand the origin of the Daleks you'd have to delve into a few vintage-"Who" stories-namely, "Genesis of the Daleks," which goes right to the heart of their origin, their humanoid past, the war that mutated them, and the mad scientist (Davros) who turned that mutation into the nastiest menace our universe has ever dealt with.
Hi Juliette. How's things? That start of this episode caught me completely by surprise. Seeing the Doctor on Big Brother and Rose on The Weakest Link was very surreal I must say! I knew I recognised the Big Brother music but couldn't quite place it at first. Once I realised though my mind was like Whaaaat??? 🤯😲 This episode brought to mind an old movie called Stay Tuned. The plot involved a couple getting sucked into their new satellite TV service, and then having to survive the messed up versions of movies & TV shows they find themselves in (it stars John Ritter, who played Ted in Buffy). I remember really enjoying it back when I saw it in the early nineties. I wonder how well it holds up, and if I'd still enjoy it today. Thanks for all the awesome videos Juliette 💜
I loved seeing all the game shows, Neil 🤣 I don't want you to think less of me (🫣), but I've seen a few episodes of the first season of Big Brother over here when it first aired haha. It wasn't great but it was all the rage back then. I do love reality shows, but that one was not really for me 😅 I used to LOVE the Bachelor and Bachelorette when I was in my 20s! I would also watch Real Housewives hahaha I've not seen that movie but I think I would like it! I do tend to like quirky things... I watched a movie called M3gan last night about a robot doll 😳 it was actually filmed in New Zealand, like our Sweet Tooth was! It must be not too bad over there haha I hope you've had a nice weekend so far, Neil 💜
@@julesreacts I think you'd enjoy Stay Tuned. If you can find it maybe give it a watch. I saw M3gan a couple of months back and really enjoyed it. Well, enjoyed/was creeped out by it is probably more accurate. Might not be too far fetched of a concept either seeing how AI is blowing up right now. Geez, what a scary thought! Juliette, I have to confess that I used to watch Big Brother back in the day. I saw probably the first four series and used to really enjoy it. Now, reality shows might not be my thing anymore but I can't knock anyone for enjoying them. I mean, I watch let's play and reaction channels, which I'm sure many people find just as bad as reality shows. Hope you've had a nice weekend so far Juliette as well Juliette💜 . I'm just about to finish work and get mine started with a bit of gardening. How thrilling! 😂
Awww thank you! Yeah, weekly episodes work best for me as it takes a while to record and edit them. I wanted to alternate between 2 x Who and 2 X Buffy per week, but there were some on the patreon that didn't like that, so this is what it is for now as I just don't have the time for more 😸
Those questions you asked towards the end: IMO some of the best episodes and story lines revolve around those. You still have a lot to look forward to and I'll be there to witness that.
The very first time we were introduced to a Dalek, waaaay back when, was initially through their point of view - 'tis a trope that the show has used many times since. ^_~
The 1975 4th Doctor story 'Genesis Of The Daleks' explains their origin. It might be worthwhile checking that one out if you get a chance. Love the enthusiasm of your reactions by the way. ❤ X
That one is (in my opinion) one of the best, I've just bought the bluray box with it in even though I've already got the complete classic collection on DVD anyway! I'm extremely sad like that! 🤣 X
@@julesreacts Yes, I was going to mention “The Genesis of the Daleks” myself. I know it’s relatively popular with Whovians in general, perhaps because of the subject matter (people do want to know how the Daleks got started); but the last time I saw it, I didn’t think much of the story myself-written by Terry Nation, the real-world creator of the Daleks. It featured the 4th Doctor (Tom Baker), and Sarah Jane Smith and Davros, who both pop up again later in New Who. In the 21st century, Davros is played by a different actor, but Sarah Jane Smith makes a comeback played by the same actress, remarkably enough.
@@melvyncollins7305 Not really. I think of a spoiler as something that reveals the plot in advance, but I said nothing about the plot of any story. I didn't mention when Sarah Jane and Davros would pop up again (in the whole span of New Who); and the existence of the Sarah Jane Adventures as a Doctor Who spin-off is no secret.
It's so wonderful watching you enter the wonderful world of Doctor Who, thanks so much for sharing your journey as a Whovian with us and being so open and raw with your reactions and thoughts. The great thing about this episode is the hosts of the real, present day shows ( Davina McCall for Big Brother, Anne Robinson for Weakest link, and Trinny and Susannah for What not to wear) all actually voiced their robot counterparts! They assumed Anne Robinson would turn it down but she was apparently very amused by the Anne-droid. And don't worry, your questions will be answered :)
DW is a wonderful show. You have embarked on an amazing journey. One tip: if you can, avoid spoilers at all costs. It might even be a good idea to get someone to vet your RU-vid comments for spoilers - some people can't resist spilling the beans. Good luck!
Oooh, here we are! The finale really gets off to a great start here and I reeeeaaalllyyy can't wait to see what you think of the conclusion. I love how it brings so many elements together from across the whole season, as well as how it continues to make Jack, Rose and the Doctor feel like a team. The TV parodies are great, even if they're a bit dated now. My family and I used to watch The Weakest Link religiously, so I loved it's inclusion here (they actually did a special Doctor Who episode of The Weakest Link a year or two after this aired). Linda is a great addition too and she definitely feels like a potential companion. The Dalek reveal is great and I absolutely love Eccleston's performance whenever he's confronting them. His scenes with them here are some of his greatest moments from the show. I will say though, that they're made so much better if you know the Doctor's long history with them. Oh and it's very appropriate that you compared this to Buffy, because I remember that at the time, New Who was described as Doctor Who for the Buffy generation. I'm so flippin' psyched for next week, I can't wait! Also, if you want a little Dalek history lesson, read on, if not, feel free to ignore it: The Daleks first appeared in the second ever Doctor Who story and they're what launched the show to success. There was legitimately a craze called Dalekmania, with them becoming the show's break-out stars. In their first appearance, the Doctor and his companions landed on their homeworld, Skaro, where the Daleks were confined to their home city, due to their travel machines being powered by static electricity that ran through the floor. Their initial backstory stated that they'd originally been called the Dals and had fought a long and bloody nuclear war with another race called the Thals. As a result of the radiation, the Dals mutated and had to confine themselves to weaponoded travel machines in order to survive. However, in 1974 their origin was retconned slightly with a classic and beloved story, called Genesis of the Daleks. Here, the Time Lords sent the Doctor and his companions on a mission to Skaro at the time of the Daleks' creation, hoping to stop them from being created. Here, the Dals were renamed the Kaleds, but the rest of the story stayed the same. It was shown that a scientist named Davros was the one responsible for their creation. He conducted experiments, trying to find the next step in Kaled evolution, creating genetic mutants and putting them in those iconic travel machines. He deliberately removed 'weaknesses' from them, such as emotions and conscience and believed them to be the superior lifeform of the universe. The Doctor actually came close to destroying them at their creation in a very iconic scene, but couldn't bring himself to do it. A lot of people actually consider this to be one of the precursors to the Time War Sorry for the long-winded history lesson. 😆
Wow I'm surprised the Daleks were so popular among the viewers! They are pretty cool though, and scary, so I can see why people enjoyed them! I also heard before that they never used to be able to hover and now they can go upstairs 🤯 I agree with you about Christopher in this episode! He was amazing... I've never seen such great fierce and angry acting... you can FEEL the anger surge from him! He's SO GOOD! I hope you have a lovely weekend 😄
I am so so glad you are watching these episodes, it is like getting to watch them again with my kids when they were young. Seeing your expressions of joy, excitement and even a few tears is wonderful. Reminds me also of when I first started watching way back in the 70’s. So glad you are enjoying them. Please keep them coming. Lots of love
Definitely more fun watching with someone, especially someone watching for the first time. Great reactions to the episode. Always wonderful to expand the Whovian family, especially with someone as awesome as you. Nothing easy when it comes to the Doctor and you'll be surprised by what he can do and what situations to come.
Really wish Chris had a second season. Hopefully he will eventually come back for a Special, for more than just one line like in the 50th... He was sooooooooooo goood!!!!!!!!!
Enjoy your reactions a lot! The fashion game show was a popular British show in the 2000s called Trinny and Susanna’s “What Not To Wear” where they would makeover someone who has deemed to have bad fashion sense. It’s aged pretty badly honestly but was big in pop culture in the UK at the time this episode aired! Looking forward a lot to seeing your reaction to the finale!
In the original classic doctor who series ( the Daleks ) episode which has been recently colourise there’s a glimpse of there origins in that episode you don’t get to see anything but there’s a line that implies the Daleks use to be Very human like but they evolved into squid looking creatures due to ( something I won’t say) so they have to live by ( something ) not going to spoil anything but I’d recommend watching the very first appearance of ( the Daleks ) first story with the first doctor William Hartnell maybe after you have watched all of new who
I still remember watching this for the first time, back then these shows were actually on, and I assumed the telly had glitched at first and was playing audio from another channel.
The weakest link question at 12:21 was not only a callback to the beginning of this season but a crafty callback to the earliest days of the original series. The first Doctor actually visited the Isop Galaxy way back in 1965! He did not visit "The Face of Boe" but did visit Vortis, a planet where intelligent human sized Moths were the dominant lifeform. (A very ambitious story idea considering the budget of the era.) On a side note the voice of the "Anne-Droid" was actually provided by Anne Robinson, the real host of the Weakest Link.!
In the US, we have always had Big Brother, now in its 25th series/season (since 2000 !). We had an America version of Weakest Link for two seasons from 2001-2003 but was cancelled. A revival version began in 2021, now in its third season. I think that is because we have our own brainy game show Jeopardy!, which ran 1964-1979 and has run continuously non-stop since 1984.
Oh Jules, the Daleks! Such a complicated foe. Once you have finished this season, you should watch the 1975 Doctor Who classic story "Genesis of the Daleks" to learn of their beginnings. A great reaction, thanks for sharing your Who journey with us. Can't wait for the next episode!
O M Gosh ,. Your nearly there season finale,, bought tears to my eyes again, lovely reaction as always, editing to perfection again. Looking forward to your next reaction.
This is n excellent finale with plenty of Daleks. He's fought Daleks before, he's used to it. He can handle it. All your questions about the origins of the Daleks were explained in the classic series. They are mutations who need the outer casings to survive. I won't say any more than that in case you watch the classic series at some point, Juliette (which, of course, I well recommend for the future). Interesting your reaction to Lynda wanting to go with the Doctor. My reaction was, yes definitely. I had grown to really like her already and could see she would be a great companion. She would work well with Rose.
I might be too protective of Rose and her potential relationship with the Doctor 😅 I just feel she kind of likes him... or has a crush. I'm not sure, but I'm just getting those vibes from them. I don't know if that is a thing in this series or in the future or maybe I'm just weird and like romance too much that I'm always pairing people up 🤭
In March of 1975 the "Daleks' were created in "The Genesis of the Daleks'.... Tom Baker was the 4th Doctor in 1975.... This is not a 'Spoiler' just a History Lesson....=))
You can tell this episode came out in the early days of reality TV. After about S3-4 of Big BRother/Survivor, they started bringing contestants back in.
@@KthulhuXxx I just meant the idea of a show just killing the contestents instead of sticking them in cryo or something until someone was voted back in. That didn't really start happening in most reality shows until after this episode aired.
DALEK: But you have no weapons, no defences, no plan. DOCTOR: Yeah. And doesn't that scare you to death. Awesome stuff. Funny episode at the start that quickly takes a deadly turn. So glad you're loving the show. Need to watch the next one right now :)
I remember watching this first season of the reboot and the army of Daleks and a chill went up my spine. The old "Genesis of the Daleks" episode with Tom Baker (the 4th doctor with the big ridiculous scarf) was one of my favorites. Eccleston was a great Doctor and had such an infectious smile. I can't believe you figured out the transmat almost immediately.
Funny you mentioned Buffy. If I’m not mistaken, many of the people working on New Who were fans of Buffy and I think some of the writers may have actually worked on Buffy. So there may be some parallels.
I am always so charmed by your WHO reactions *sigh* -- MEANWHILE, The Doctor has faced Hordes of Daleks before and is Unafraid! So there's that. And pretty much all of your questions about them are answered in the original series, specifically the 6-part story "Genesis of the Daleks." So when you're ready, that's where to turn. Don't let anyone spoil you for what's ahead, though! And don't keep us waiting! Thank you!
Kudos to the Big Brother rights holders & Channel 4 for letting us do that - BB doesn't air on the BBC but that's their music, logo & presenter (Davina Mccoll). Weakest Link, What not to wear, & Ground Force (Garden Makeover) were BBC shows.
Darleks: Spoiler free, just some info you asked for. The Darleks first turned up in a doctor who episode in 1963 and were a fan favorite and had many more showings. Then in a 1975 episode the doctors turns up and meets them before the Darleks were Darleks which if i remembet he does not know they will become the Darleks ( been about 20 yrs since i saw that episode) and you see how they came to be what they are.
Slight correction: it's "Daleks". No 'r' in the name. Also, the serial referenced where the origin of the Daleks is explored is called, fittingly enough, "Genesis of the Daleks". It consisted of 6 episodes of each 25-ish minutes each. To Jules: I can highly recommend watching it at some point. Another Classis story that is often recommended is "The Five Doctors", because many key characters (including, as the name implies, the first 5 Doctors (well, kinda)) appear in it, so it's sort of a "crash course" on Classic Who if you will.
The ducklings have decided that this is there favourite reaction so far. They were all gathered around with the goats, all the girls swooning over Capt. Jack, while the boys all last he Rose.of course I'm still mad at the ducklings for stealing the laptop. Anyway, have a great day.
Regarding your questions about the origins of the Daleks, unfortunately you're not gonna get much of an explanation because in the original run of the show before NewWho they covered it A LOT. I'd tell you to look it up but you shouldn't for quite a while because a) you could easily spoil the future of NewWho for yourself by accident, and b) a very important element of their origin returns in a future season you'll get to someday. But to answer your question about their reproduction, in the episode 'Dalek' that you've seen, the titular dalek at one point says "I am a soldier I was bred to receive orders." That gives you a good idea of what it's like, and one non-spoilery but of trivia for you, the planet the Daleks originally came from is called Skaro. So glad you're enjoying the show :)
Ah, Christopher Eccleston...Christopher Eccleston...Christopher Eccleston!!! A masterful performance here. You feel his pain when he thinks Rose is killed and his anger when he sees Rose with the Daleks, with nothing more than the expression on his face. Not a word is needed. Love the 9th!
If you have the oppertunity I'd reccomend checking out the Classic Doctor Who story, Genesis of the Daleks, the title kinda spells out what it's about.
Brilliant two-parter here, the next episode will... well, you'll see. The two robots were voiced by Trinny and Susannah, two fashion 'experts' who were big in the UK at the time.
Where did the Daleks come from? Who made them? 1975's Genesis of the Daleks answers your questions. In fact... I'm not sure how far ahead you are, but it'd worth watching that one between this series and next.
Great reaction, as always! Weird I know, but we didn't even have a TV in 2005 so I originally missed this entire series. (In fact I got the Firefly DVD that same year, and had to ask friends if I could watch it at theirs!) I really wanted to see this before the next series came along, which was probably the biggest push to us getting a TV in early 2006. I got a secondhand copy of the DVD boxset on eBay, which unfortunately turned out to be pirated. I didn't actually realise it for ages, because it was only the printing on the disks that was visibly wrong and the only other DVDs I'd seen were Firefly so I just thought it was an odd design choice. Curiously, I knew of Big Brother and The Weakest Link even before we got a TV, which shows just how embedded in the culture they were!
I love this!! I can say that sometimes I think it might be a blessing to have no tv. We'd spend more time with our loved ones and also get a lot more done!
“I’m gonna wipe every last stinking Dalek out of the sky!” You can really feel the hatred the Doctor has for the Daleks. The best part of a Wednesday for me.
Lovely, fun filled, reactions from Jules, for this superb New Who episode. How on Earth can this story end?! Even for those of us who know, we relish watching the conclusion, again and again. Thanks for sharing another fantastic reaction video, Jules.
Funny you should mention Buffy, as RTD has acknowledged that series was a huge indirect influence on his writing. I love this episode. I think the way it's structured is really quite clever in ways that don't get much credit.
Bad Wolf / Parting of the Ways is peak doctor who. Your reactions throughout series 1 have solidified you as one of my favourite DW reactors, on account of your open speculation and genuine concern with the characters and their arcs and relationships, you can tell that you're actually paying attention and enjoying the show. I hope you enjoy the series finale and choose to keep the DW reactions going past series 1. If you do, make sure to watch Born Again between the end of Series 1 and the start of series 2, it's a very important minisode that explains a lot of information for new viewers, but people often skip it.
Thank you SO much!! That is so incredibly lovely of you to say 💜 I will definitely keep going and the minisodes and Christmas Specials will be something that goes on the channel as well 💜😊 I hope you have a lovely weekend!
if you want to know more about the creation of the Daleks, I'd recommend giving Classic Who a try, specifically the 6-episode-long serial "Genesis of the Daleks" in season 12. It's where the Doctor goes back in time to try and stop the Daleks from being created/coming to power and as a result, we get to see their proper origins.
They do say that your first doctor is your doctor. And I’m so glad Chris Eccleston got to be you first because (and I bet you get this from the comments a lot) Eccleston is massively overlooked. I have had friends who skipped this season because they wanted to go to the “good stuff” faster and as a result they miss a lot of context. When you they ask me about it, I tell them to watch the season they missed.
