In 2005, not only was "Torchwood" used as a code name for the series, but the Doctor Who production team actually labelled tapes as "Torchwood" as a security measure while they went from Cardiff to London, probably just in case fans saw them and tried to get hold of them.
I think the James Bond metaphor is the best way to think about it. Each James Bond actor has had a somewhat different personality, but they're all "suave action badass." The Doctors are all different, but they share aspects like enthusiasm, earnestness, willingness to put himself in harm's way to help other species/beings survive.
Well, except the First Doctor at the beginning of the show ;p He only cared about satifying his curiosity and his granddaughter Susan. It took travelling with two humans, Ian and Barbara, as well as Susan, to change him into a hero we know him^^
The difference is all the Doctors are in the same continuity. They're the same person, just reordering their brain chemistry a bit to result in different personalities.
I've always loved the little fact that Barty Crouch Jr. ( The character David Tennant plays in HP) comes out for the last time in the chapter titled "The Parting Of The Ways" and the first Doctor Who episode Tennant comes out in has the same title.
This is the episode where I finally respected Mickey. The girls he loves pretty much tells him he means nothing to her anymore, and you can see he understands exactly what she’s saying before he says he’s going to help her. Up until that point, he kept trying to get her to stay there, now he’s willing to do whatever it takes, including help her leave, so she can be happy.
That's exactly the moment I lost all my respect for him lol He doesn't recognise his value by just helping her for nothing in return when she literally says on his face that he means nothing to her. There's a subtle difference between being romantic and being an idiot for someone It's good to be romantic when the love is reciprocal, but being romantic when it's not, then you're just being silly
@@omrdark3357 When you love someone, or even just care about them, you want them to be happy even if they don’t have the same feelings for you, even if it’s to help them get back to the person they do want to be with. He didn’t become her maid and follow her around trying to win her over, he let her go and he helped her leave.
The Time Vortex is not the conscious part of the Tardis; it's what the Tardis travels through when it's travelling through time, and access to the Time Vortex can be found within the Tardis herself. It's the machine itself that has a life of its own, able to manipulate the Time Vortex to do what she wants. So when Blon transforms into an egg, the Tardis used the Time Vortex to do what she wanted. When Rose takes in the Time Vortex, she took in its power and established a psychic connection with it the same way the Tardis can. So it was Rose, with the power of time, who was Bad Wolf. The Tardis didn't take control of her. Hope this helps!
Fun Fact: 2005 "Parting of the ways" Chapter in Harry Potter new book. Barty Crouch Jr. Dies (Played by David Tennant) 2005 "Parting of the ways" Episode of Doctor Who. David Tennant appears as the Doctor.
Personally David Tennant and Matt Smith are both my favorite doctors just because of the fun sort of appeal that comes off of them, then the switch instantly to that darker doctor when he gets serious.
In the next episode, when the 10th Doctor is trying to convince the Sycorax to not enslave humanity he says: "Think of their potential. From the day they arrive on the planet, and blinking step into the sun. There's more to see than can ever be seen, more to do than can ever - Hang on, wait sorry, that's "The Lion King"." He's not singing it, just saying it without realising that he lifted his inspiring speech word for word.
Fun Fact: David Tennant was in "Cassanova" show right before Doctor Who and his first lines include, "So where was I? Oh yes! Barcelona(Cassanova)!" Jogs people's memory.
I always believed Chris was a very under rated doctor! He brought the series back and branched the huge gap inbetween, he drew fans back in to then fall in love with his successor.
Btw guys, there's a small scene inbetween this episode and the next that was shown on the UK charity show Children in Need which shows David Tennant and Rose in the TARDIS, just if you want to do a mini episode before the Christmas Invasion. The clips for all minisodes like these are on RU-vid and are pretty short, but are really good and enhance the experience
I literally could write a series of essays for EVERY doctor and how awesome/wonderful they each are, but Eccleston is my favorite. Chris played it masterfully and if I ever were cross paths with The Doctor, I'd want it to be him. I look forward to you guys getting to know Doctor #10. I'm loving these videos!
Since you already mentioned it, I'd highly recommend watching the 2005 children in need special "Born Again" just before the christmas episode. It's very short and fills the gap between the two episodes.
RTD confirmed that the doctor did love Rose. You can catch little things throughout the season like him watching her and mickey on a monitor jack asks him what he's looking at. just little things like that. They didn't want to make it obvious. And the kiss was something he wanted to do and it literally killed him LOL
AND HERE IT IS. First off, props to Lono for the editing on this one. That was great. And also hilarious a lot of the time. AND we get like 35 minutes of discussion? That's amazing. First time I saw this episode, I cried floods. Like, I don't know what it was at the time, but I'd grown really really attached to Eccleston as the Doctor, and I didn't want to see him go. It's not even a particularly sad moment, but it still gets me. I love this regeneration a lot though. It's him accepting it as a consequence of saving not some big civilisation or ending some war but of saving Rose. I love that. I agree on the interpretation that Bad Wolf is this combination of Rose and the TARDIS. I really like that one. Eric being upset when Jack died was also pretty hilarious, at least with knowing he comes back. I guess we like to see you guys suffer. I'm pretty sure I teared up rewatching this with the crew, but I think I saw Calvin tear up too, and perhaps even Shane. Doctor Who has started dragging us down in to emotional torture already. Great. I'd love it if you guys watched Torchwood, whichever way you think is best (though of course I'm biased and would rather have both Torchwood and Doctor Who going at the same time but oh well). I think Torchwood starts sometime after s2, but I'm sure Lono can check that out. But yes, there are some crossovers between the shows. (Also, Calvin stopped watching Torchwood halfway through s3?! That must have been difficult, considering.) The Sarah Jane Adventures would be fun as well, because then I could actually get around to watching those, but I don't know if they'd be Blind Wave's thing? About the minisodes, again, I'm biased, because I have some of them I really love. They're not necessary, per say, (except possibly The Night of the Doctor, but even that you can do without), but it's good fun. That being said, I don't think you have to see every single prequel to the episodes they did in like, s6. But that's a while away. I guess the ones I'd pick out would be: Born Again, Time Crash, Space, Time, Pond Life, the Night and the Doctor shorts, and the 50th prequel Night of the Doctor. They're almost all on youtube, so they're easily accessible. But I think Lono can be a good judge of which ones would fit, if any. And I've probably missed some that someone else thinks is absolutely essential. :P Doctor Who fans can never agree on anything. Back to the episode, I really love this one. I think the dramatic stakes are well done, and even if the Doctor triumphs in the end, there's still consequences throughout all of it. But I like that it ends on hope (except for Jack, poor guy). And the Doctor's line, "So was I!". He was indeed. He was the reason I got into Doctor Who to begin with, his mannerism, that ridiculously big smile. That being said, I can't wait for you guys to start watching Tennant. I think you're going to have a blast with him, and with Doctor Who in general. I never realized how very young he is here! It's so strange seeing that. Also, damn Eric. With your predictions. There were a few of them here, one in particular that I had to pause the video at. Guys, is Eric secretly a time lord? Where is his TARDIS? That was eery. Also, I would LOVE for you guys to go back and watch some Classic Who, as Calvin talked about. There's some really interesting stuff there and I think you'd enjoy it. I'm pretty sure I know what Tom Baker adventures Calvin was referring to, and that would be a lot of fun to watch you guys react to. Can't wait for Christmas next week. Gonna be a lot of snow. Let's hope. Christmas in July. Looking forward to it.
THE TARDIS IS ALIVE. THE TIME VORTEX IS NOT. The TARDIS has access to the time vortex. She (cause the TARDIS's are female) has the Vortex within her, in other words all of time and space running throughout her.
@@zeallust8542 i mean she became a women in the doctors wife during Matt smith's era, but it's just common to call vehicles female, that's why people refer to boats as "she"
If I remember correctly Eccleston didn't really like working on Doctor Who and I think him leaving so early was also because they wanted to introduce the regeneration thing early for people that weren't familiar with Doctor Who before so they knew what they were getting in to. Usually when shows kill off or write off the lead thats when the show starts to die and never recovers with a few exceptions obviously but killing the main actor in the first season is a lot easier for fans to handle then to kill them off after 5 seasons of being attached to them or w/e and once you've introduced to whole regeneration thing people just know going in to it that you can't get too attached and to just enjoy the time you do have with them.
El Jefe He had conflicts with the production team of the show, so he decided to leave after a single season. that's one of the reasons he didn't return for Day.
Amazing reaction guys!, The Bad Wolf storyline is one of my favourites I would be so happy if you do Torchwood, i think you should start at the end of season 2 of Doctor Who
Melissa K. if they are going to have mixed schedule for two shows then they should start a little bit earlier. Might as well halfway through the season like Calvin said.
Blind Wave, in order to do Torchwood right watch in this order: 1. Start Torchwood Season 1 after Doctor Who Season 2 2. Make sure to have watched all of Torchwood Season 1 before the Doctor Who Season 3 episode "Utopia" 3. Finish Doctor Who Season 3 4. Watch all of Season 2 of Torchwood before the Doctor Who Season 4 episode "The Stolen Earth" After that, you can watch the rest of Torchwood at your own pace. Season 3 is five long episodes, and it is (as 9 would say) fantastic. I was told to stop after that because apparently Season 4 of Torchwood is utter horse crap, so I never watched it.
79.03.13 well if u wanna get super technical the Christmas specials are episode 0 of the next season baring the one after the year of specials we had its just that netflix lists them as episode one for each season that's what I was referring too
Had to pay for patreon because I couldn't wait for this to come out!! Also wanted to vote ;D I hope you watch Torchwood because its really good!! Lol, love the Liong King bit considering the next episode.
50 year old subscriber from the UK: I really appreciate that you guys discuss the episodes. Many channels simply have people watching and ... that's it. Erin is doing a great job of leading you all through the episodes without giving any thing away. While it might be contentious, I think watching the odd story from what is called 'classic Who' would be interesting for you guys - Genesis of the Daleks comes to mind but you don't have to at all. Please keep doing what you are doing and watching and discussing the plots as that is what makes you guys special.
I love how you have a major discussion at he end of each episode, it's so rewarding as a viewer. Great reaction guys, I look forward to seeing your reaction to Tennant's Doctor!
Before watching The Christmas Invasion, don't forget the prequel mini episode Children in Need special (also called "Born Again"). It takes place between this episode and The Christmas Invasion.
I'm gonna be honest: it took me a while to get used to Tennant. First off, I didn't recognize him from Gonlet of Fire (that's on me). Second, I was thoroughly enjoying Eccleston's Doctor that I didn't like him changing out after ONE season. Third, part of me was still reeling from the last two parter and "everyone lives" (that one took me three seasons to understand and come to terms with, but it's a fantastic two-parter to be sure). And four, honestly it's the same as two, because we were following Rose's story for this season. Anyone who hadn't watched the older stuff was viewing this from Rose's perspective, thus a Doctor Change without context takes some time adjusting. Tennant was amazing, but Eccleston was "Fantastic!"
I remember this first regeneration I watched. I was definitely wary going into the next episode and unsure if I'd like it. By the end of the Christmas Special, however, I was completely won over. Nothing against any of the others, as they all have their charms, but Tennant is definitely ~my Doctor.
it's so exciting to see them explore Doctor who and it's lore like they'll learn about in this reaction like Captain Jack, Torchwood, what happens when the Doctor crosses paths (hello "The Three Doctor's/The Five Doctor's/The Day of the Doctor"), the soul of the TARDIS because those were super cool things to watch and learn about
If you're interested in knowing who played the classic doctors here's a list: 1st Doctor: William Hartnell (1963-1966) 2nd Doctor: Patrick Troughton (1966-1969) 3rd Doctor: Jon Pertwee (1970-1974) 4th Doctor: Tom Baker (1974-1981) 5th Doctor: Peter Davison (1982-1984) 6th Doctor: Collin Baker (1985-1986) 7th Doctor: Sylvester McCoy (1987-1989) 8th Doctor: Paul McGann (1996)
The Time Vortex is the construct that the TARDIS flies through (like the Temporal Zone from Legends of Tomorrow). The TARDIS also has a soul, and it's soul has an innate connection to the Time Vortex. The Heart of the TARDIS is a gateway to both it's soul and the Time Vortex. When Rose created the Bad Wolf message, it was all her idea, just with the power of the Time Vortex. The TARDIS's soul simply granted her that power.
Loved your reactions to Jack's 'death' so much... and the regeneration! Have really enjoyed rewatching this season along with y'all (especially the two of you that have never watched this before).
I couldn't click on this immediately, much as I wanted to. Because I was watching the finale of season 10, officially catching up on Doctor Who. AND THAT CLIFFHANGER I CAN'T I just spent half an hour recovering, then came here so I could drown out the HOLY CRAP with some happy stuff. YES? THIS IS HAPPY STUFF FITE ME
Arron just predicted the next doctor when he said next one could be woman or a black guy and literally we’ve had a woman doctor and the next doctor is a black guy
oh you guys will love David Tennant. the best doctor in my opinion. also I'd recommend maybe moving Dr who to 2 or so episodes a week otherwise it'll take forever
Yes, we need to get it to two episodes a week! One on Wednesday and one on Saturday or something! I love these reactions. There is something so cool about watching new people watch Doctor Who for the first time.
I've always interpreted the Bad Wolf bootstrap was possible because of Rose absorbing the Heart of the TARDIS. There have been other bootstrap paradoxes in the show, but I've gotten the feeling that, here at least, Rose momentarily has power over all time and space (or most or much of it).
"Bad Wolf" and "Parting of The Ways" is my Number #1 favorite season finale two parter episode in the "Doctor Who" TV Show! I relly liked how the producers brought back the ruthless Dalek Emperor himself as the Main Antagonist!
LOL!! It's SOOOO tempting to spoil you guys because you ask Excellent questions (and they will ALL be answered in time). So for someone who is all caught up, it's kind of cool to listen to you discuss things that will become MAJOR in later episodes. Keep it up .. Fun times (and sad ones) are coming soon enough.
Don't know if anybody already answered that, but the 1st season of Torchwood happenes between season 2 and 3 of Doctor Who, since the event at the end of season 2 influences one of the character from Torchwood. Then season 3 of Doctor Who happens, and then season 2 of Torchwood.
This episode is called Parting of Ways. The chapter of Harry Potter, book 4, that Barty Crouch Jr dies in is called Party of Ways. British Media coming full circle. Also, Torchwood - It is a more adult themed show. It starts after the start of Doctor Who's season 3. At the end of the third season of Doctor Who is a trilogy and you have to finish the first season of Torchwood before starting the trilogy. They run from one to the other.
I always wanted them to do one episode (or a small arc, two or three episodes at the most) where 'something' happened to the Doctor (accident, Time Lord disease, etc.) which caused him to go through a series of 'false regenerations'...then they could try all of those unusual Doctor ideas with a bunch of guest stars doing little samples of how they might act as the Doctor. At the end, he's fixed/cured and goes back to being the main actor.
Ever since you guys started reacting to this I couldn't wait for the tenth doctor, and we're finally there! Ahh you guys will love Ten, he's brilliant, and David Tennant is an amazing actor
I really hope the blind wave crew watch and react to the Children in need mini episode that comes after episode 13 (parting of the ways) and before the Christmas episode ( the Christmas invasion) its a sad but fun little episode that leads on to the Christmas invasion.
Just found you and I have to say I love this. Just the emotion on your faces and it's not faked at all, some of the best reactions I have seen! Like I love how emotionally invested you are because I can so relate to it and your odd quip like comments, Fantastic! So yeah great job, this was so worth watching! I like to think the Bad Wold is a Hybrid of Rose and the Tardis but on their own they aren't like Rose can't even remember it happens but I think the Tardis does since it is a being of time so to speak. But that's just my take on it.
the series stopped with the 7th doctor (Sylvester McCoy) in 1989. The 8th doctor (Paul McGann) was only in a feature film in 1996 and Sylvester McCoy starred in the beginning of the movie to give him the regeneration.
There is a mini series with David Tennant called "The Escape Artist" ....He plays a criminal attorney and it is very chilling with an amazing plot and acting. I highly recommend it!
Essentially S1 of Torchwood takes place during S2 and half of S3 of DW. At the end of S1 of Torchwood, Jack actually joins up with the doctor again, which is chronicled in the second half of DW S3.
I love that tennant is in broadchurch and when they did an American version they cast him in the same role so he was playing the same character similtaniously in 2 different versions of the same show.
The Dalek's original race was the 'Kelad's, a human like race, it is seen in the old doctor who series that they were involved in a generational war against another race that they shared a planet with until they developed the Dalek armoured form which ended the war... and you can probably guess how things went for the Kaleds! I think the story was 'Genesis of the Daleks' and also the first Peter Cushing film.
It's Broadchurch that David Tennant is in. David Tennant had a fair few roles before this including: Blackpool, Secret Smile, Casanova (all BBC/ITV shows). I would recommend watching Blackpool! Broadchurch was way after his Doctor Who time, it also includes another Doctor and a companion from future series as well as a few cameos.
Thank you for this series! Has been amazing and introduced me to your great channel! Dunno if you do it for other shows but considering there's 10 seasons to get through please consider 2 episodes a week, I'll have gone grey before you catch up, cos ya know timey wimey
Now, Crew at Blind Wave. Make sure that you watch the Children in Need special mini-sode called "Born again" It's a small bridging episode between "Parting of the Ways" and "The Christmas Invasion" Just wanted to make sure someone pointed it out.
There is a miniepisode in between this one and the christmas special! It follows the story, I personally think it will be good to watch it with the christmas invasion.
The minisodes are worth checking out ...Torchwood reactions would be also cool and you guys should definitely check out the Tom Baker story 'Genesis of the Daleks'. Great reactions
I am excited to see if these guys become proper whovians. It would be epic to see an episode of Doctor Who as well as an episode of Torchwood a week. Loved the video and I can't wait till we get into series 2!
There's a saying amongst the fans of Doctor Who: "You never forget your first Doctor." So, I'm a little happy that Eccelston was Eric's first because he was the guy that fit the Ninth Doctor the best in my opinion. I can't imagine how the series would have been with Nine as a different guy. I can say the same thing about the Tenth Doctor and David Tennant, but that could be bias as he was my first Doctor. 😊
I always assumed the Bad Wolf was Rose + the TARDIS. Because the TARDIS/Time Vortex as an omnipresent entity does not take sides in wars, it's a god essentially but it does not manipulate time the way Bad Wolf did. However, Rose is human with human wants and motives, so that combined with godlike powers explains her actions. The Doctor knew that it was a bad idea, too, because not only was she reversing death and doing things that should not be done, but the Time Vortex is too much for her human body to handle and her mind would have been burned up. Fans debate about whether the Bad Wolf was all Rose or all TARDIS but I argue it's an even mix of both. And furthermore in my personal headcanon, now that Rose and the TARDIS have connected, there are still lingering parts of each other's energies in them, which accounts for future episodes in which the TARDIS seems to have developed a personality of her own and misbehaves more often, tipping the scales in the Doctor's favor every now and then because she loves him-- "I want you safe, my Doctor."-- because she was touched by a human heart that loves, like what happened with the Dalek. And yeah, like you guys said, there's basically no coincidences, it's all the TARDIS' doing.
Just for your reference - the Doctors from the original series: William Hartnell Patrick Troughton Jon Pertwee Tom Baker Peter Davison Colin Baker Sylvester McCoy Paul McGann
And that's it for Christopher Eccleston and Series 1. I actually missed this episode when it first aired and didn't see it till much later. When I watched the Christmas Invasion I didn't even know the Doctor regenerated! I was so confused! Going back and re-watching this episode I can appreciate how amazing Series 1 was and how great the 9th Doctor was, he was my first Doctor and I will always remember him fondly for that. Now we get David Tennant and some of the best Doctor Who content there is soon! Can't wait!
When thinking about all the things that Bad Wolf the Time Goddess as an entity combined of the Tardis and Rose, when you get to Clara just think that for a moment while we didn't see what was going on - and remember, Rose did last longer with the Time Vortex in her than the 9th Doctor did. Think of the possibilities that while The Tardis looked into Rose too, and the Tardis could have theoretically chosen NOT to go.... But Bad Wolf was saving HER Doctor. This emotional connection would not have been something that a Tardis couldn't understand could she? Without Rose, the Tardis might not have had the capacity to change. But for me, Bad Wolf also took a moment to blow a leaf into the wind, just remember it for later So Bad Wolf saved the Tardis and The Doctor from the Time War. Torchwood, well Jack goes from being a bisexual or even pan-sexual, the Torchwood series, my husband and I called it poofter-wood.
@@FuryousD Not at all. The phrase Bad Wolf is prominent in every Rose arc. Bad Wolf Bay, the end of Turn Left, and the Moment are the biggest examples.
@@LounaM11 after she left the show there isn't exactly that many episode that feature her in it which is why I said that initially, i also forgot about bad wolf being in the day of the doctor special
Series 1 first aired from March to June in 2005 (and it would have been until 7:45 btw as opposed to 6). 'Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire' (the film) was released in November of that year and the first 'Doctor Who' Christmas Special, funnily enough aired on the 25th of December so David Tennant was technically in 'Doctor Who' first but only for a few seconds before the 'Harry Potter' film. 'Broadchurch' is the detective series he starred in and I recommend it. 'Torchwood' starts after Series 2. You can watch it series to series (in the order: DW S2, TW S1, DW S3, TW S2, DW S4, TW S3, DW The 2008 - 2010 Specials) but if you want to watch episodes from each running parallel, yeah, get a friend to work that out for you. I think the minisodes are worth watching but not to be taken as necessarily canon as they can contradict lore. Also, I'd say don't watch the prequel minisodes (some series have them) because they're spoilery. Also, usually "series" and "season" are interchangeable depending on region but the BBC have dubbed the modern ones as "series" and the classic ones as "seasons" for the sake of differentiating.
Actually the TARDIS travels through the time vortex. The panel they ripped off exposed Rose to the time vortex and the time winds. The TARIDS is actually powered by the Eye of Harmony. But yes, she absorbed the power of the time vortex. The Eye is the heart of the tardis and powers it to allow it to fly through the vortex. Wibbly wobbly timey wimey stuff.
Just a heads up, the Eighth Doctor more or less didn't exist in on-screen form, as the show was just dying out when the seventh Doctor regenerated. He appeared in a feature-length movie, I believe, and had some adventures in the related comics, but aside from that he didn't really have much of a presence prior to the start of NewWho
