No one has told you yet that the actor playing the professor is the son of the actor who played the second doctor? By the time I post this probably 80 people will have told you. I loved this episode. It’s the one who got me into NuWho. Tennant’s performance made me believe Ten and Four were really the same person (or being). This one was scary and also quite deep in exploring the human mind and how dark we can become so easily. And the acting, especially the repeating scene… really amazing. One of my favorites. It could have been terrible but everything worked together- acting, directing … to make it fantastic imo

In this one, the real monster was the people. Or sort of that the Midnight alien thing heightened all the worst bits about the people. And only those who had some semblance of intelligence or wisdom or kindness like Deedee, Jethro and the Hostess could see through it.

This episode is a fan favourite for sure. A lot of people praise this episode for really pulling you in and building suspense and actually being quite scary despite being set in one room and not being able to see the creature at all. Next episode is actually my favourite episode in the entire season in terms of writing so I'm excited to see what you think.

Yeah- this is quite an essay on how individuals and groups behave when they are scared and don't understand what's happening around them......Most of us are never trapped in a tour bus on a diamond planet - but you see it in comment threads on the internet, and in public disorder events all the time! I think this is a brilliant episode - so well crafted and acted - even though after numerous watches I'm still not entirely sure about everything that happened.....
@HamzaReactz
@HamzaReactz Год назад
And that’s what I love about this episode. We don’t have to understand it all. Not having an explanation for what the thing was just makes it so much scarier and eerie. I’d even say it ruins the episode if we were to ever get an explanation. Episode was written in a way that does not require us to know.

I’ve seen this episode a *lot* of times, but there’s something I only just now noticed when watching your vid: at 1:30, you can see Jethro mouthing along with what his father is saying, which is foreshadowing for what the midnight entity later goes on to do. This is another example of what you said you enjoyed in the previous episodes: one location and a bunch of character work. I really like how, here, everything that the Doctor would usually use to gain credibility (“I’m a doctor” “my name’s John smith” “I’m just clever”) completely backfires. This is one of my all-time favourites.
@HamzaReactz
@HamzaReactz Год назад
Interesting. I never noticed that stuff. And yeah, it’s amazing what these writers are able to write for an episode just set in one location 🔥

This episode and Listen (Which is way later down the line, Series 8) were always two of my favorites because of how much they take advantage of the fear of the unknown, never showing or even identifying the monster. The main villain is human paranoia and the mob psychology that takes over in stressful situations. It helps that the monster here is, as explained through earlier exposition, completely impossible. There's no way it can exist. And yet it does. It's never even answered how. Doctor Who's genre can shift wildly depending on the episode and I absolutely love it when it becomes horror.

This is one of my top 3 Tenth Doctor stories. It just goes to show that Dr Who stories don't need to depend on action scenes and masses of CGI,provided the plot and characters are compelling enough. This is a great suspenser,which transitions from comedy to tragedy surprisingly well. The actor who played the professor was played by the son of the actor who played the Second Doctor.

Great ep, glad you liked it. like these small eps with the Doctor interacting with new people, especially seeing as all his usually charms and methods no longer work to get him out of trouble. I think this episode was written, among other reasons like budget, to be a counter to the previous Christmas special where here the passengers are fundamentally 'human' rather than helpful.

I think this is one of the best eps of doctor who. So well written. Memorable. Scary. The music at the end talking about the hostess is so good. This was written I think cause they ran out of money? Something like that. A cheap episode with one location.

This episode low-key gave me nightmares. It was like the darkest part of humanity being exposed by fear of the unknown. The situation just got out of the Doctors control so quickly and he was completely helpless. It was like the people were feeding off each others anxiety and fear until they lost all rational thought. A favorite episode I often skip because its creepy lol.

Its interesting I read that alot that kids get quite bored of it... I found the opposite experience... I got my niece and nephew last year at the age of 8 and 10 to watch Who properly for the first time...and this is one of their favourites of series 4 along with partners in crime, unicorn and the finale eps... they were fully engaged with it... while I was expecting them to walk off bored lol... which they did for many of the last era episodes unfortunately... but not this one

@DWaDDLJ
@DWaDDLJ Год назад
This is my top episode ever... I absolutely adore it. Its scary for many different reasons.... because its the closest to real life horror... we get a monster but we never see it really, we never know who it is... so the real monsters are the human beings as well as the heroes.... the way it uses mob mentality, fear of the unknown, the lows that humans are willing to go cos other people are telling them to, or cos they are scared... just brilliantly captured... And the Doctor... everyone of his usual charms that usually helps him get out of a situation...goes against him and makes him untrustworthy to bunch of scared humans... compare that back of the bus scene where he talks about being clever to voyage of the damnded where he gets another bunch of people who are scared to trust him...here he ends up being unintentionally patronising...and him being the "cleverest" ends up him being the main victim to the unknown monster...and the fact its the Doctor who suggests they talk and yet that's what comes to bite him back... his own voice being stolen cos he needs to talk... and wow I just love how David plays it... he's frozen but the pain in his eyes... just remarkable performance!! A episode set in a box with a small cast....hardly any special effects... yet the drama and performance and story depth raised to 100!! What I love with hostess is that initially sky tells her it's her job to do something, then she's the one who suggests about throwing sky out and ends up being the one who does it... and yet remains a nameless hero... with an episode with so much talking going on...not once did they bother with her name... I also love that in the end its the two women of colour who seem to get what going on... and guess what... the white Karen couple try to shut them up... Omg I cud go on about this episode!!! Oh and I also love that fact we know if Donna had been there... she wud have thrown all of them off the bus before they touched the Doctor 😂 I still can't watch this ep in the dark and at night.. such a simple concept done brilliantly... It's one that had grown to be loved a lot in fandom... I think at the time some pple were annoyed with the characters for being annoying (though that was the point) and also no reveal in who the monster was... but missed the point that this was the point... the Doctor did not win this... The Doctor doesn't always win... I can't tell you how many times I've seen this ep 👀 Enjoy the next ep... another left turn...

Time for a hot take. I'm honestly not that big a fan of Russel T Davies's writing style, which is unfortunate when he's the head writer for the first era of New Who. It grew on me over time but for the first 2 series especially I dislike basically every episode he wrote apart from the finales. So when I say Midnight is my favourite episode of Doctor Who written by RTD and I consider it a masterpiece, I hope that emphasises how special this episode is. It amused when you mentioned with the previous story that you really like episodes that can tell a compelling story in a small setting when arguably the best and most extreme example of that was literally up next.
@HamzaReactz
@HamzaReactz Год назад
Honestly, I can see why people may dislike his writing. I’m not sure how many episodes he’s done. But I think there’s definitely been a handful he’s done that I’m not a fan of. However, this one is 🔥 the ability to tell a story in one location is not an easy thing to do, anyone that can successfully do it, has my respect 💯
