You're right, River doesn't know about the library yet. That's the end of her story, and all of this comes before it for her.

The reason they knew all the statues were weeping angels was because the aplans which is basically the species that had inhabited the planet had 2 heads so the statues they built therefore should have 2 heads. The statues they were surrounded by only had 1 head which is how they figured out they were not the real statues and were infact weeping angels

I started watching Doctor Who because of you, I’m still in season 4 but I had to go and subscribe to BritBox just so I could start at the beginning 🤣 If you have not seen the OG episodes then boy oh boy, you’re in for a retro treat. Little fact this was the first episode Matt and Karen filmed together, they don’t usually film the episodes in order, the beach scene was their first day on set .

As other's noted, we encounter River out of order, it's not even exactly backwards as the Doctor noted they meet out of order. He almost implies he's seen her since the Library off screen. To your other question, the ship crash is a "rescue" all the present Angels because they were starving and are now feeding off the ship's leaking drive radiation.

Just to clarify the points you werent sure of - the Church soldiers are there because the planet the Byzantium has crashed upon is a human colony world, River was in some fashion working for the Church army to infiltrate the ship and find out what they had on board in order to avoid going back to the prison we learned she is in. It turned out to be a Weeping Angel on board so when they arrive there she calls in to the army unit she is working with and they turn up to help deal with the Angel and protect the colony. Hope that clears it up.

This episode made me nervous around statues for years lmao :') also I definitely recommend watching the library episodes again when River's storyline ends, it'll all make so much more sense

Controversial but I think the angels look more sinister when they’re just staring blankly at you or covering their eyes with their hands. Rather than their screaming faces

Stephen Moffat is VERY good with cliffhanger endings like this.

Ive seen another comment about Classic who. without any spoilers, ill give a brief guide -Classic who is composed of 26 seasons and tv movie in 1996 attempting to revive the show -while a more episodic show, it still has a serialized story telling having Serials (or stories as we call them) consisting of multiple episodes for parts ranging from anywhere of 2 episodes, to 8-10 episodes -During the 1st and 2nd Doctors era in the 60s, around 50% of stories are missing with only the audios of the episodes remaining, some of the episodes do have official animations from the BBC. Here is the run of every Doctor (how many seasons each doctor has): 1st: seasons 1-3 (and the beginning of 4 before regenerating for the very first time) 2nd: seasons 4-6 3rd: seasons 7-11 4th: seasons 12-18 5th: seasons 19-21 6th: (has the very last story of season 21), seasons 22-23 7th: seasons 24-26 (and at the start of the movie) 8th: The Movie (small reminder for the future ou need to see this for a short for season 7 of the new show) That is a quick guide to classic who without any spoilers, and i hope you check some stories out someday, start eith the very first story for season 1 though, and then go from there from suggestions

If you think back to when we first met River in Silence in the Library, you may recall the scene when she first pulls out the diary and says to the Doctor "Where are we now? Have we done the crash of the Byzantium yet?" Well, the name of the ship that crashed here is the Byzantium, so this is what she was referring to. As others have said, though, be sure not to look up anything about River Song or the actress playing her, for fear of spoilers. Just go with the flow.

Fun fact there is video for behind the scenes of this episode - and you can actually watch how the actress for River Song actually filmed the scene where she gets dragged into the space from the spaceship. With a help of green screen and lines she did it without a doubler.

Great two part story here. Oof, 3am is rough, used to be up at 4 twice a week in my other life, those were rough mornings lol.

Out by 3am, dear lord, what it must be to be young. Yes, I joined the channel so I can see all these full reactions! Yaay! (Waves hands like Kermit.) These are two excellent episodes - they were actually the first that Matt and Karen filmed. I suppose they wanted to pair Matt up with Alex Kingston as support but I don't think he needed it! Maybe also to see if there was chemistry between Alex and a younger actor (which there was in smouldering spades). Nice that Jorah Mormont found a job while being exiled from Dany's service. Seven minutes - that's when recognition crossed your face! The River Song timeline is very complicated - I've seen graphs that people have drawn - but no, this is River from an earlier point than the one we saw before - she's just Doctor Song, not yet Professor - so she doesn't know about the Library yet. And what a cliff-hanger. This is why I like Matt the best, the anger in his voice (and any other emotion he shows) just hits me in a way that David or Chris never could. Each to his own! I'm pointing my own weapon at the ceiling, hoping that part two will drop from it soon!
