@@daffy8995 I don’t think you understand. It’s got to be tough developing a character with a later episode being made first, meaning it has to be there all upfront since it’ll seem contradictory if he’s less developed here than in the first episode which is being filmed later and has had more time to get his quirks and hands flapping down to feel part of the character rather than just acting.
FUN FACT This was the first story Matt Smith and Karen Gillan filmed on the show. Pretty amazing considering how their performances feel so natural in it and the chemistry between them is great. A testament to both of them as actors.
Not sure where you got your information, but it's actually well documented that Matt Smith's first filmed story was Victory Of The Daleks, followed by The Beast Below and thirdly, The Eleventh Hour, which accounts for the level of his performance in that, given that he'd already done two stories as the Doctor by that point. This story was the fourth one filmed, and on the evidence of this, he was clearly now able to sustain his characterization to the level he'd just achieved in The Eleventh Hour and to all the episodes that followed.
@@steveosborne3714 I heard from British friends these were the 1st two he filmed. But actually, your info makes more sense. Victory of the Daleks was a little rough, though I attribute that more to Gattis’ writing. Can you tell me where to find this info? I’m interested to read it
@@steveosborne3714 Actually, that's wrong, filming began on 20 July 2009 on the Southerdown beach, whilst the forest scenes were filmed in late July as well for the first production block which consisted of "The Time of Angels/Flesh and Stone". Episodes 2 and 3 made up the second production block which was filmed in September-November 2009.
If nothing else confirms that the beach scene/time of the angels arc was the first block they filmed, his hair definitely does. It's very fluffy and youthful here, longer than any other episode. :')
Matt Smith manages to portray this childlike wonder and excitement at everything he sees. But you can also see the 900 plus years of The Doctor in his eyes. It’s a brilliant performance by Matt and it just gets better as he settles into the role.
These two episodes and The Eleventh Hours were all directed by the same person, Adam Smith. He’s obviously a terrific Director. Matt said he likes to do multiple takes. Not only did Moffat write all three, he also was very hands on with their execution. He spent so much time on them, to this day, he regrets neglecting the overseeing of some of the other episodes. Moffat can be self-deprecating at times so it’s hard to really know the extent of that. A Doctor Who show runner has to do so much, I tend to give them more slack than some others might. I agree, the cliffhanger moment is great! One of my favourites
This was easily one of the best seasons of the show ever made; the cast and crew all did their homework. Matt Smith, having never seen the show when he got the part, watched the entirety of the series from Hartnell in the classic era, up until the end of Tennant's in preparation for his time on the show; he took the part seriously and gave it his all, working out the mannerisms, physicality, everything. It paid off so much.
thank you for this reaction ! Just a little thing : keep in mind that we don't see all meetings between River and the Doctor. She met the Tenth's Doctor more than once (we learn that in a book written by moffat himself. Don't read it now, it's spoiler). He already knows her more than us :) (but I think it's the first meeting between River and this Doctor). Sorry if my english is not good, it's not my native langage. And you have a very good memory ! ("I totally trust him" is very similar with her words in the Library)
I felt very similarly to you. I saw a lot of promise in the Eleventh Hour but from this episode onwards he just felt like the Doctor. David Tennant began to recede from my mind. Damn this is such a good series in general, seeing the episodes in sequence like this is a great reminder.
You gotta remember FB, when River Song first showed up in Series 4... we had noooo indication if River Song was ever going to reappear (unless you were following the people who were stalking location shoots, which, for a lot of us, we didn't know was possible!) Frankly, we'd been gd blueballed MORE than once before. First, we had the whirlwind romance with Madame de Pompadour, then we had the Doctor living out a human life with Joan Redfern. Something went on with Liz 1 also at some stage and then we even had a dalliance with Kylie Minogue! So when this River Song person showed up in the Library, with this mysterious blue book and knowing his gd name and everything, a lot of us were giving the show as a whole the stink eye lol because the Doctor (and the show generally) didn't have a great track record for sticking with a whole host of very fine leading ladies. So when Doctor Song showed up here, writing Old High gd Gallifreyan on shit and flying the gd TARDIS, it was BIG. One of the most vivid memories I have of watching the show live back in the day. I distinctly remember sitting there like 'Da FUQ?' Only Time Lords can write in Gallifreyan. Only freaking TIME LORDS can fly the TARDIS. It was either gonna be BIG, or, it was going to completely re-write a lot of the prior Time Lord continuity of the show. Generally speaking the whole fandom at large was sitting there watching this unfold, with this new Doctor and new companion and new showrunner, wondering if they were gonna royally fuck this whole thing up.
Thank you for saying this. All too often I see people spoiling the fact that River will come back to reaction channels who are watching the library episodes. I'm a massive fan of River's journey, but I didn't really expect her to come back when I first saw her.
You mentioned the range that Matt Smith brings to the role of the Doctor and I completely agree. From all of the actors who have played the Doctor, Smith IMO has the most range and it's one of the reasons why I consider him to be the best Doctor.
If your gonna go back and watch Silence and Forest of the Dead again then that would be a good time to start a flow chart if you wanna keep track of the Doctor and Rivers Timeline.
Another great reaction and review with some really insightful analysis. This is definitely a great episode. It's wonderful to have River back and having the weeping angels too is another bonus. As someone else has probably said, this was the first episode Matt Smith filmed. He did an amazing job. Another small point - the first scene Alex Kingston and Matt filmed was where she enters the Tardis from space. She loves telling people how they had just met and she kneed him in the balls! Can't wait for next time.
Thaaat wasn't actually the first scene they filmed, first scene for all three of them together in any iteration was on the beach. I think the TARDIS doorway scene was a few days later from what the cast has recalled.
Interesting what you say about how quickly Matt Smith settled into the role of the Doctor... Because this story was the first one filmed after his regen scene in The End of Time. So these are Smith and Gillian's first filmed scenes in the roles. Filmed before The Eleventh Hour!
Yes! I have been looking forward to this one :) I really love your reactions, particularly since it looks like you really get into the storylines, notice references and connections to previous episodes, and get genuinely excited. I stayed up way past my bedtime to wait for you to upload (UK time), but I couldn't wait until the morning. It's like watching it all for the first time all over again. And I love that you like River Song, she's fantastic and Alex Kingston is perfect for the role. Can't wait for next week!
"This is probably him at his best as the Doctor", "i love him!". Believe me, Matt hasn't even hit his stride yet, if you like him now, by the time you finish watching his first Xmas special THAT is when he is fully in his stride and you will love him even more from that episode on. Watching Matt Smiths Doctor genuinely made me a better person,.. well all Doctors did, but Matts more so.
I did not start watching Doctor Who until 2018 but when I was a kid and I would see commercials and he was the Doctor at the time so whenever I think of this show I always associate it with him at first. The Sixth, Ninth and Twelfth Doctors are my favorites but much like Tennant, Matt Smith will always be the face of Doctor Who.
great episode for sure. the aliens to blinks alien (ha which you just mentioned). blink is a better angels episode and works better as a standalone episode but i prefer this episode. at this point 11 became my favourite doctor.
A recurring issue for me in this era, is I love some elements of the stories and really dislike others. One of the things I dislike is the way the Weeping Angels are changed here.
Ahhh yes, the time when Moffat decided to start ruining River Song. She was so awesome in the Library episodes, then Moffat went a little overboard with making her "the most awesomest character EVAR! Even better than the Doctor, fer shure!" **sigh**
Moffat had already written stories for River Song with David Tennant, then the news came dat Tennant was going to quit as a Doctor so he had to adjust, but River Song coming back was always the plan. Alex Kinsgston once said, they don't write often roles like that for woman and she felt so lucky to get to play River Song, a character she still holds dear. River Song IS an awesome character. But when ones hate Moffat as much as you do, I understand it's a bit hard to accept he did wrote amazing stories, created awesome characters and have the succes he has. *sigh* indeed.
