Most reptiles and amphibians have a so-called "parietal eye" at the top of the head, although it's usually concealed beneath the skin. This "third eye" isn't used in visual perception, but to detect light and regulate certain hormones and bodily rhythms like the "sleep/wake" cycle. Given hundreds of millions of years, it will presumably evolve into a laser weapon ;)

Great (5 Star) review and highlighting villains on both sides (Humans - Silurians) reminded me why I found the story so captivating as a kid - indeed the Doctor's attempts to broker a peace is what sold John Pertwee to me - though back in the year before (69) was gutted not only to have to say goodbye to the second doctor, but also that Jamie and Zoe had to say goodbye to their memories together.

I have to say that episode 6 really hits differently now that weve all gone been through a pandemic. Its eerie and far too true to life, and it has a bit more gravitas in hindsight.

I love these original Silurians and their third eyes. The voices, too, are great! Much better than any of the Silurians that came after, even if they were Naturists! 😂

If you want more Silurians in "extended media", check out Malcolm Hulke's own novelisation of this story, "Doctor Who and the Cave Monsters". It's of its time, and a little preachy (as Hulke tended to be), but a lovely piece of writing.

At a guess, lizards are cold blooded so clothes would not really keep them warm, in fact it may restrict heat absorption. most lizard species as far as im aware dont have exposed genitalia. It maybe the sea devils need to keep wet and clothing helps keep them moist so could be a practicality.

I definitely nee dot rewatch this one. It didn't grab me as much as the rest of season 7, but it was still good. Definitely needs some love on the collection set to clean up the restoration a bit. Silurians are a great creature though and the themes in this once are totally on point. Also that ending hits...

There are interviews where certain show runners do say they felt that the companion should be in peril or ask it what things are. Liz didn’t fit this idea ( there is a joke about this when liz is replaced by jo) . I think its a shame I loved Liz and there was a lot of potential here.

I like this story, I personally didn’t feel the length last time I watched it. It managed to keep my attention throughout the whole run time. My one issue isn’t really to do with the story but more that almost every subsequent Silurian story is basically the same tale again which has become rather dull over the years.

I am personally not a big fan of this story. I do love the ending though, it is very dark and sad. I also love how pacifist the Doctor is in this story considering how the third Doctor has become well know for more often than not fighting his enemies more directly than other Doctors. Overall I'm not a huge fan of this story, but I do really like the Silurians return in "the sea devils". I personally feel like the third Doctor's era starts out a bit slow, but once it eventually gets started it becomes really great down the line

The decision to do three 7-part stories in this season was a misstep, even if it was necessitated by budget constraints. While I enjoy all of the stories, they do tend to stall out somewhat in the middle. Inferno works the best, while Ambassadors is the weakest. The Silurians falls in between. It’s a very good story that could have been great with a little editing. Even cutting out one episode would really tighten things up. Terrance Dicks himself felt the 7-part stories were too long. As much as I like this story, its “sequel” with The Sea Devils works better for me.
