So, does Terry Nation secretly hate the Daleks? It would explain why he wants to kill them so brutally in this serial. MrTARDIS breaks down his guilty pleasure story; 'Death to the Daleks'.

The silver looks far better than the grey that, somewhat ironically, dominated the color Dalek stories. The dark grey worked with the militaristic feel of Genesis but otherwise I wish they had made better use of colour and gone with silver and blue of the 60's design.

I think they almost tease people with it in Dalek, before establishing that they can kill with their, for lack of a better word, plungers. It works with that story though, since the point there is that a Dalek is dangerous no matter what.

I really love this story. It's both an atypical Pertwee and Dalek story and it does something new rather than repeat the same beats over and over again. Sarah Jane is also really really good here, one of her best stories. This is just a fun, tightly written slice of Doctor Who.

Since Dalek storylines aren’t particularly inventive in Pertwee’s era, this one was really refreshing for me. It’s a shame some of writing is a tad convoluted and the themes aren’t fully utilized. Although the Dalek deaths are fun, it felt like Nation ran out of steam a bit in the last few parts after delivering a solid beginning.
@stevetheduck1425

'Death to' is one of the Dalek stories that does exactly what is says on the tin. It's short-form pulp space adventure 'our crew vs. the robots minions of a base / city' to gain their freedom, as the MaGuffin of owning super-tech city and it's knowledge is abandoned by both sides without a thought. The inverse of the 'base under siege' story, rather a 'penetrate the booby-trapped dungeon' Not Seven Samurai', but Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade'. I've always liked this one: no pretensions, silly action and utterly predictable and comforting on a cold night. It's adaptable to any SF or fantasy tabletop RPG system you like, and it's something that could even be put on stage by a school. Wonderful rubbishy delight. Even the Doctor Who tenth anniversary magazine had a short story with 'earth' / 'halldon' space crew who are the same characters discovering an alternate origin of the Daleks, and in an abandoned high-tech city, to boot.

I like the music in this story Carey Blyton. It’s so much more interesting then the music by Dudley Simpson in other stories at the time. If the Daleks were presented as serious and deadly as we normally see them then yes, the music wouldn’t suit them but because they are presented in this comical way, the wobbly music really suits them. You know how in recent years they have been releasing music from classic Who stories like The Daleks, The Invasion, The Krotons, The Five Doctors, The Caves of Androzani, Ghost Light and Survial, well I would love it if the BBC released all the music from this story (also Carey Blyton’s music for The Silurians).

What always bothered me about Death to not he Daleks -apart from that horrendous music - was the whole story rests on power drains rendering technology uses less…yet the Daleks who also lose their ship’s owner and gun power…still roll around and blink their dome lights with no interruption at all! The Doctor saying they move by psychokinteic power- so the Daleks are psychic to the point they move their heavy cases by thought??? Then why did they need static electricity and radar dishes and shoulder slats in all other stories? This one ridiculous over site kills the story -obviously they couldnt have the Daleks in it without this enormous plot armour exception, but kills any suspension of disbelief.

The first episode is one of my favorite openers to a serial. The fog, the power loss of the Tardis and the earthlings on a mission, the two civilizations and the Dalek reveal! But after that great first episode it became a mess! The Exilon were not threatening enough and vanished after episode 2/3. Daleks weren’t needed for this story at all. They should’ve given the Dalek time to the Exilon tbh. Sarah Jane didn’t had much to do during the 2nd half of the serial and we did got a damn labyrinth intelligence mystery for the Doctor to solve in that damn city that nearly took 1-2 episodes. Anticlimactic ending only the sacrifice that destroyed the Dalek ship kinda made up. But I can’t give that mess more than a 5/10

I feel like this started out with the concept of power draining planet separately from this being a Dalek story. Almost like they had general plot ideas and monsters that they draw from bags to decide what the story is going to be. Plot idea: Power Drain Planet, Monsters: Daleks. But wouldn't that make the Daleks useless, if they lose all power after landing? Ah, but they only lose their guns. How does that work? They're psychokinetic. But wouldn't that contradict them needing static electricity in the past episodes? Maybe they've mutated since then. Daleks don't change. Purity is their whole deal. Just do it. No one is going to notice. Re-runs don't exist yet.

Interesting take on what I'd argue is the second best Dalek serial of the Pertwee era. I think your reaction to this one is how I feel watching Planet of the Spiders and Robot back to back. Spiders feels long and drawn out while Robot feels like a breeze at four episodes. And I go back and forth on the incidental music. I keep wanting to like it and I think it's fun to see Doctor Who pushing the boundaries a bit. But I think it violates the one rule of incidental music in that it draws too much attention to itself. There is a fine line between being vanilla and overly noticeable.

I saw this one after Power of the Daleks and I can say one of them knew what Daleks were, one of them did not. The one by Terry Nation knew what they were? What are the odds of that? They're not as scheming here as in Power? That's... no, not at all. Power: "Here's an unwatched lab where you can manufacture all the Daleks you want... whatever that means." How can they be really scheming away in Power when the humans were idiots? Parrinium in the script. Wonder if that nice Professor Parry named it? - after his change from Archaeology to Geology, that is.

It melts the moment the power collector is broken. Self-repair systems need batteries, I expect.

To break this moment this sort of gives me old 1966 Star Trek vibes

I am not a fan of this serial as I think I’m too young to get the subtleties of it.

This IMO is the last ever awesome Dalek story owing to the fact we get the dreaeded Davros creator of the Daleks and he screws up the concept of the Daleks

I actually really enjoyed this episode. Probably wasn’t the most well written but it was still fun to watch. Can’t say that about Chibnall’s run on Doctor Who. It was satisfying seeing the Daleks adapt and conquer after one was destroyed by being hit with a bunch of rocks.

I really can't get behind this story. It's very boring and the music doesn't work at all.
