I miss Missy the most. She was at the "love" end of the love/hate axis that all the Masters orbit around, and her redemption and effective death was a fantastically compelling arc.
It kinda annoys me when people insult John Simm’s Saxon Master calling his performance ‘over the top’ and ‘unhinged’ and I’m like uh yeah that was the point he was driven insane by both the events of the Time War and the never ending constant drums in his mind it makes sense he’s be driven to being completely unhinged and truly dangerous as opposed to being more calm and controlled
Fun fact about the War Master/Yana: in the following two parter, the Master explains how he came to be back in this timeline. During the Time War, it was the Time Lords who resurrected him to fight in the war.
No way, I wrote my English essay on the Master yesterday (we were supposed to write about our favourite character)! I'm so excited to see the video, only a shame I wasn't writing it today, haha 💗
A fun thing to think about is that while you did all of these in show order there is every chance that like river song the doctor is meeting the master in the wrong order. I mean missy’s death was supposedly a final blow she couldn’t regenerate from according to saxon master.
This video is about the tv/film appearances of the Master. Alex Macqueen never appeared in tv or film. Maybe actually listen to what they say in the video next time.
Fun Fact: Though Delgado was the first actor to play the Master, he was never confrimed to be the original incarnation, infact he was never even numbered officially, leaving many to believe (including myself) that he was the Thirteenth Incarnation, who then decayed into the Decayed Master, whilst others place Sacha Dwahan's Master between them.
The Master was granted a "new full set of regenerations" in return for assisting the Doctor in The Five Doctors. This mechanic could have also been used for Thirteen, instead of creating that thrice-damned Infinite Child nonsense. We could literally have a different actor as the Doctor every week now, sheer insanity.
@@xheralt I mean before The Timeless Child stuff happened, the Doctor DID receive a new set of regenerations. That's how Eleven regenerated into Twelve in The Time of the Doctor (the War Doctor and the Meta-Crisis using up two regenerations). So it isn't even clear how the Timeless Child stuff is supposed to work with that. (Also while the Master was indeed offered a new set of regenerations in The Five Doctors, he never ended up receiving them until the Time Lords resurrected him for the Time War.)
Your right delgados version was the last of his regeneration, the decayed one was the same version, Anthony ainley was a possession not a regeneration as was Eric Roberts. The time Lords resurrected the master as they needed a warrior and that was Derek jacobi
I love the 3rd/Delgado and 12th/Missy dynamic where they have opposite personalities, but with the twist that in both cases where the Doctor is highly principled and moral and the Master ever and at times cruel, the doctor is also rather rude and abrasive to people whereas the Master is proper and polite.
I still feel that the latter Masters are, in order, Saxon Master, then Spy Master, then Missy. Otherwise Missy's redemption arc doesn't make sense if she then goes back to being a genocidal manic as the Spy Master.
Erm you missed out a huge chunk of the War Master from BF. What about the Reborn Master played by Alex Macqueen, The young Master by Milo Parker and Mark Gatiss as the Unbound master?
Like many other fans, my theory is that Sacha Dhawan's Master is in between Harold Saxon Master (John Simm) and Missy (Michelle Gomez). At the end of The Doctor Falls when Missy kills The Master he regenerates into Dhawan Master. Then at the end of The Power of The Doctor when Dhawan Master is killed he regenerates into Missy.
@@oliverbaxter4952 Yes at the end he uses the satellite to kill the 13th Doctor. That causes her to regenerate. The laser also hits The Master and he is killed when the Cyberman factory planet explodes
@@nickloschen2717 I could swear we never actually see him die? Trust me, all I do is watch Doctor who. He gets the doctor, when she gets in the tardis she's still alive
Dhawan has to be an earlier incarnation, due to the use of the Tissue Compression Eliminator. My theory is he's the one who became the decayed Master from The Deadly Assassin. Or the incarnation right before it.
I think one of the better ideas for a spin-off show would be a show focusing on the Master. They could switch the order, have Missy as the most recent, a now redeemed Master, who "somehow returns" (heh Star Wars reference), but it'd be fun, you'd not know if the Master is going to be a little killy, or friendly this specific episode lol
After the Master returned from being trapped in a collapsing pocket universe in Castrovolva I just accept that they can get out of any situation no matter how dire to torment the Doctor again.
Hands down the best moment of Delgados master when when he was attempting to mind controle Joe again, up untill that point he is curel and giving her death threats but the moment she resists he swaps to being an absolute gentelman and charming. Perfectly showing how two faced and manipulative he was.
i was abt to mention the toymaker in the thumbnail but then i realised hes in the tooth :D good video and really entertaining as i have not watched a lot of the old dr whos and i will soon
Wait, wait, wait, wait, wait! I got a lightbulb moment. 💡 The Harold Saxon Master and Missy turn on each other, right? She stabs him, he shoots her. Saxon recites to Missy this cheesy line: "Don't bother trying to regenerate, you got the full blast." Maybe Saxon was convinced that the laser screwdriver shot was somehow efficient enough to kill her without letting her regenerate. We know for a fact that that's possible. It happened to the Doctor in "Turn Left", among others. And he is a scientific genius. Who am I to challenge his line of thought? But... *WHAT IF...?* What if both fell and then Saxon regenerated into Missy? Then Missy sees other Missy on the floor and helps her. Which leads to Missy surviving and regenerating into something else (Lumiat? Spy Master?) instead. This would give Missy's entire arc a whole new perspective, with her very slowly turning to the side of good despite knowing that she will eventually "die" for it. Or... maybe she forgot about it, like the Doctor in the 50th Anniversary.
12:20 This assertion is one of my biggest pet peeves. Tom Baker's Doctor made mention of a Time Lord as "He or she" and I'm certain he made mention of being a mother once or twice, though I can't find that quote so senility is possible. The idea, at least in the show, that Time Lords can regenerate as either gender is at least that old. Though in The Doctor's Wife, Tennent's Doctor found evidence of an old friend and specifically referenced their tendency to regenerate either way. Missy was just a great example on how to do it. Whittaker's Doctor left a lot to be desired on the topic, but i think that was mostly due to extremely poor writing.
I think the TARDIS spitting out the Master at the end of the universe after he fell into the eye of harmony makes too much sense to slot the Shalka Master in-between them.
I liked Missy the most. And a lot of that I think is down to Michelle Gomez's performance. I recently gave some of her episodes a re-watch and I was amazed at how many subtle mannerisms and touches she adds to the character, I know some found her too quirky but I think her performance had a lot more depth that was given credit for. She really is an excellent actress. Her performance and the writing put over a simple thesis - the Doctor and the Master are a lot similar, but unlike the Doctor the Master is amoral and aloof from compassionate concerns. She sees humans as we would see ants or bacteria. Not worth thinking about. Unlike the Doctor who she sees more an equal
He can't be because if you go back to "The Power of the Doctor" when he met Ace and Tegan again when he talks to Tegan about her aunt Vanessa from "Logopolis" and Ace saying to him the last she saw him he was half cat in "Survival" that was very clear the Ainley incarnation was in his past and Ainley came long after Delgado so it's pretty clear he's the present incarnation.
Tubi really needs to get the rights to nu who (at least from the 9th to the 13th Doctors as Disney has 14th and 15th) so I can binge watch and get caught up.
I think it's interesting that The Master literally gets killed by himself but couldn't prevent it. Missy should remember killing her next incarnation as Saxon. It's her past. Or did they mess with their own timeline by doing something that was never part of their fate?
Not really "EVERY" Master if you haven't got Alex MacQueen or Gina McKee (The Lumiat). It's frustrating when Big Finish is ignored despite having some of the best stories in Who.
No comment on early fan theories that the Meddling Monk or the War Chief possibly being earlier incarnations? (To be sure, if you go by extended canon, they've all come back and are clearly not the Master.) Then there's the show's first Master, the Master of the Land of Fiction. He clearly isn't the Master, but the name is there, and that was about the same time that Terrence Dicks and Robert Holmes, who created the Master, both started working on the show…
IT would have been great to see thh war Chief from the war Games, as some consider him to be the master also. Also some Big Finish/expanded Media Masters.
i love the video but i stils believes that missy its after spymaster, even with lumiat plot being canon, she is so amazing, crazy and empathic, kind last encarnation of him, also she kind teasing the timeless children on season 9 telling about clara of the past of the doctor
I wish we could just keep one actor as the Master across multiple Doctors these days. Gets annoying for yet another “I’m the Master” with every new Doctor. Although the last 2 reveals nailed it both times.
It’s sad expanded media isn’t mentioned at all here with it telling quite a few important parts in the masters life including the Delgardo masters regeneration, how he became crispy and another incarnation being the dark eyes master
12:10 no, Rassilon planted the 4-beat rhythm into his head so that moment to form a link and escape the time war. Combined with the exposure to the untempered schism this drove him mad. Also, why in the world did they have to bring him back after season 10? The 2 incarnations killing each other was a PERFECT end for the master. Shame on Chibnall
Of course, that might genuinely have been the end. We shouldn't assume that the TV series shows the Master's incarnations in internal (?) order, any more than we see River's in order.
Whys the Toymaker in the thumbnail he's not the Master there both different people and species. I never want to know the Master's timeline or how he survives that just takes away the mystery and the fun.
Jazzhands ("Spy"... pfft...) Master was the worst. No, learning that your people's creation myth is a lie is NOT an understandable reason to be that upset. Even if that part DID make sense, the whole Gallifrey Cyberman Genocide thing was just throwing a bunch of plot spaghetti at the wall and using what *didn't* stick.
It's not far from accurate. This is every Master in Doctor Who. The TV show is the only thing that truly, unequivocally counts. (Also, there is a disclaimer 0:22)
We had a theory back in the day that the Eye of Harmony was in fact in the capital and on the TARDIS simultaneously (Time Lord technology - it's wibbly wobbly). But that's not the good part. The final form of this theory said that there was ONLY ONE TARDIS. Different shells, yes, but inside... if you were to enter the Doctor's TARDIS and walk far enough, you would find yourself in the Master's TARDIS, or the Rani's, etc, etc. You'd have to walk a LONG way, and it would hardly be practical. It's all the same pocket universe. And the best part is so far nothing has happened in show to disprove us.
1.eric roberts should come back in ncuti s third season if sacha doesn't want to 2.great video and no maybe is a cult to the spy master or the next before he challenged the toymaker and 3. sacha being after michelle or not ,i don't care i just want a good future characterization after sacha and chibnall ,i still hope the dhawan master to come back some way in ncuti s last or the next doctor first season😔😉
Head cannon for the tv film - The Darleks where working with the master and the execution was fake. It was instead a trap with the plan to alter the structure of the master into the worm like parasite so he could take over the Dr. The biggest indicator for this is that the Darleks must at that point be a power than could rival the timelords but there was a form of uneasy peace between then. Why would the timelord not stop the exercution? Why is a timelord allowed to collect the masters remains? It all feels very diplomatic. The fact the timelord dont get involved shows that the Darleks must have the capability to kill timelords. The fact the master survives when the timelords exoect him to be dead shows that the Darkeks didnt intent to kill him. Also keeping in mind that the Dr could claim his responcibilities as the president, the Darleks and the master would be able to topple the timelords from within.
@@Grizzly01-vr4pn It's so much more than that. It requires extensive training in medicine and diagnosis of injuries. It requires certification that allows you to treat patients. They are basically Nursing Assistants who work in the field.
@@Grizzly01-vr4pn The point is their jobs entail more than just driving ambulences. And so simply call the Character Julia Robert's brother plays an Ambulence Drive is kind of a misnomer.
@@josephcooter5763 Do we definitely know that Bruce was a paramedic? Maybe he was an EMT? I don't believe the TV movie explored his job role to that degree of detail. Regardless of that, Bruce drove an ambulance, therefore it's valid to refer to him as an ambulance driver.
Unfortunately modern Who decided that the character could no longer be clever or subtle instead they found it necessary to make each incarnation more violent and unhinged. Wasn't a big fan of Simms portrayal who seemed to be more about torture and revenge than a coherent character development. Missy's master actually followed the original intended story arc of the Delgado's master who was supposed to join the Doctor and sacrifice themself as part of their redemption. I found Sacha Dwahan's Master to be a disgusting abomination of a character that was supposed to be the Doctor's foil but instead was a character more suited for a saw movie. Chibnall should be ashamed of the nauseating and psychopathic monster he created. What a disgusting betrayal of great character in the DW universe! Tell me once again how this character belongs in an adventure show that kids are supposed to watch?
um... you do know the character that is played by Neil patrick Harris is not a version of the master he is one of the " old ones " who manipulate the darkness the master is an underling compared to the likes of the toy maker js do your actual research friend.
I still think Sacha Dhawan is aphiliated with the Timlesss child, but mistook 13 as fugitive as she was hiding in earth after being saved by the Tardis after 13 fell to earth. 13 found the Tardis after fugitive involving 13 with the division in her present. I think the doctor’s future as the Timeless child creates a second ‘division’ universe. Same universe that Davros can walk. seperate to the sim/Missy Master.
None of it really matters, because the last episode of Doctor Who aired on July 1st 2017 titled: The Doctor Falls. Anything called Doctor Who after that is PC propaganda!
It be crazy if whoever brings back the master from tooth it's revealed that missy was the master who played with the toymaker to survive wanting to stand with the dr. And whoever brings the master from the tooth creates the spy master incarceration. Helping prevent undermining missy death
How could you make this whole video without mentioning the overwhelming sexual chemistry between Pertwee's Doctor and Delgado's Master? This is one of the most fundamental cornerstones of the characters, and the show. Sloppy to leave it out.
where the Child Master? asian kid? who fougt in the Great War between War and War Masters and you miss the Lumiat who is the main path to understanding why the Master went mad again after the Missy incarnation
It's pretty clear you guys are running out of things to talk about why don't you study more on Classic Who and talk more about that which i find far more interesting than the whole NuWho stuff at the moment or missing episodes.
