Hi, Josh! Thanks for covering my Marco Polo animation. I'm currently working on Mighty Kublai Khan (episode 6) at the moment. To answer your question, I make the animations in black and white and then colour the thumbnails to make them stand out more.

The Celestial Toymaker fan animation is easily a 10/10, along with the Mission To The Unknown!

I can’t believe MMF294, who is my friend in real life, only started watching doctor who cause I forced them to and now here they are achieving more than I could ever manage

Having my animation included was such an honour!! I animated a scene that existed in live action because it resonated with me and felt iconic, otherwise I would have loved to animate something that was lost. It was done with Blender and rendered using the Eevee engine, which I somewhat regret as it may have looked better with the unbiased engine. I agree that the Web of Feat 3D animation didn’t really work but 3D, especially in organic characters is HARD so I don’t have any grievances against that!!

It'd be cool to see some of the animations through your vintage TV :)

Thank-you for putting this together, Josh! I remember about x years ago RU-vid offered a basic free animation program. No idea if it still exists, but I remember spending a few hours trying to put together a missing scene, before deciding it was all too hard. To anyone who is doing these animations "for fun" - hats off to them!

Doctor Who fans are the best! They do it for the passion.

As a former artist, who veered more into writing in later years. The distinct 3D artwork in Dalek Master Plan, Wheel in Space and Celestial Toymaker looks really visually impressive.

I quite like the chibi version of Marco Polo. It's so unique for Doctor Who animation. I'll definitely go find the animator and subscribe to them and give them praise on their channel.

As someone who has been making Doctor Who related art/animation for over a decade, this was such a treat. Of course, Shada now has an official animation but the take my friend and I did where you get to see continuing adventures of Professor Chronotis will forever hold my heart.

So I immediately subscribed to Conga Line Monkey. I want to see their Marco Polo in full. 👀 Edit: I've subbed to them ALL! Heck yes!

The thing about early 60s DW is that there wasn't a great deal of movement anyway. You couldn't swing a cat in those old studios. That first Marco Polo looks awesome. Another great video. You've actually given me the impetus to finally go back & watch the Hartnell episodes. I've been a Who fan since the early 80s, but never felt the need to go back and watch the series earliest incarnation. I'm glad I did. Though I have never been a big fan of the historical episodes, I've had a lot of fun seeing Hartnells impudent, capricious & feisty Doctor. I have found myself echoing his almost constant punctuation of every sentence with either "Hmm?" or "Mmm?" though lol

Hi Snares! Can you look into the recent discovery of the truck worth of tapes of 60s-80s shows (Hence it has a high chance of containing Doctor Who) that was donated to a University, the topic is really interesting!

I just want to give a shoutout to Android65mar. They haven’t posted any videos in recent years (still active in comments, though), and a lot of them are dated in places, but they are such a pioneer of Doctor Who fan animations on RU-vid and a big part of my early years on the fandom that it’s worth giving them at least a brief mention.

I like this because you actually clarify why I like certain animations such as the 3d ones. I found it difficult to specify why I like the art on the Dalek Masterplan 3d clips version as opposed to the Web of Fear ep 3 ones. Your enthusiasm about all the work is catchy too.

Hi Josh - Thank you for another fantastic video.

These are pretty darn good. I'm sure if the fan community organised, we could get some full episodes out, and maybe, possibly, complete all the missing episodes. It would require a lot of people working together on a single project, but I believe it could be done. We could assign a team to make the assets, another team could be responsible for the animation, with each person taking on a specific set as it were, to make it easier. Another with editing. Down side, is that I wouldn't be able to get this off the ground, because I have zero talent in animation, but I would love to see such organisation from the community to fill these gaps.

Ian Levine's work really should have seen a commercial release.

I had to smile when you discussed Garrett Gilchrist's efforts on "the Smugglers" at the 11:38 mark. Why? Well, the console in those shots is mine, a mesh I constructed long ago, around 2004 and shared with the Poser community. I recognize it because it has certain inaccuracies that serve almost like a fingerprint. My goal was to sculpt the modified Kenneth Sharpe design that debuted in "The Invisible Enemy", but at the time I had limited references, primarily the "Doctor Who Technical Manual". Thus, I had to guess some details, and other aspects, like the innards of the central transparent column, I just went in my own direction. While there are now far detailed and screen accurate console meshes available for third parties, I still get the warm fuzzies when somebody opts for my meager efforts from nearly 20 years ago.

Thanks Josh, this is such a fabulous tribute to many of the fan made animations out there. Having a great time going through the list watching all these wonderfully talented creations. Here's hoping some extra comments and likes will give new motivation for them to do more! 👍 Also thoroughly enjoying the re-newed effort of your own channel this year! Super interesting topic, there are so many fan animations out there that I had no idea about! I wonder if there are many other Big Finish animations, or even telesnap-style videos lying around on RU-vid to be discovered?

It makes you wonder why [over the last 20yrs years] the BBC hasn't reached out to such talented and passionate animators as these, bring them into the fold, build on the groundwork they've already done, realize a saleable DVD product that wasn't such a huge, ground-up undertaking OR [more likely] written off the expense of various ground-up story animations. After all, the greatest strength of 'Who' is its fanbase... I'd happily part with cash for an official DVD of the UCLAN live recreation of MTTU [with the interviews / behind the scenes stuff], for example. I noticed you found it difficult to look the camera straight in the eye when you mentioned your hopes for The Celestial Toymaker - it is almost as if there is more happening than you are letting on... [the footage of that clown doll growing in size is superb!]

Janjy's work looks very 'New Captain Scarlet' in terms of design. They may wish to consider adapting the Big Finish audios for Captain Scarlet.

I'm an animator in my spare time... No way I could at my current level animate something of that magnitude by myself, so to see people going for it is pretty impressive stuff!

Thanks for this one, I now want to watch these episodes for myself, if nothing else the BBC should show official animators the fan animation just before they pick up their mousse warning them that the finished article is not meant to behave as a Cubist painting by Picasso, plus classes in human anatomy and lighting would be a direct benefit of the viewer.

It would be fun if bbc would take some of the completed fan animations and put them in the collection releases that they don’t have animations done for

I remember talking telesnaps but copyright came in and got rid of all the good ones.

As a jaded older primate, I no longer do anything representational, but back in my childhood and teens it was always attempts to capture likenesses and do alternative bookcovers (in the way fans now do - rather more impressively - boxset artwork). There is very obvious potential here and it always baffles me that the beeb, given the amount of man hours fans will put into things like this, don''t call on their services; whether it be the animations or even colourisation.

I never got much into the 1st and 2nd Doctor’s episodes due to a lot of them missing. I hope there’s more animations in the future because I feel like I’m missing out on some masterpieces like The Daleks’ Masterplan. I hope we find the real ones but I really like the animations. I really like the creativity of these creators. Maybe they might get noticed and BBC will give them a official release.

With all the mod tools available for Skyrim, I'm surprised no one has ever done a missing episode in the Skyrim game engine. I know there is already a TARDIS mod.

Beautiful video wants again

I have seen a few animations made using a sims-esc video game, that animations version of The Crusades is funny because there is a scene where Barbara is captured, escapes & then gets captured again ~ her escape is that she pushes 1 of the guards into the others and runs but I guess that isn't possible in the game so instead of the animated video game Barbara starts punching the guard in the face! I can't remember where it is tho or what they used to make the animations

Some really nice projects there, I think the Deepfake has a lot of potential for some more complex stories that otherwise would be difficult to animate due to cost such as The Highlanders

I imagine with advances in technology we should all see some incredible animations in the near future as it becomes easier and easier to animate stories. While it might be a long way away it would be incredible if you could use AI to generate animation in the same way we can use AI to generate art.
