Doctor Who: Fury From The Deep (Review) 

9:05 I think the story explains this very well actually. In Episode 6, when explaining his plan, the Doctor says that they’ll echo Victoria’s scream through the main pipeline and the main pipeline connects to the Central Control Rig which is connected to the other rigs via other pipes. And earlier in the story, Chief Robson explains that sound travels across the pipes very easily, stating that “a sound of a pin dropping as loud as a thunderclap.” Also, when showing off his invention in Episode 6, the Doctor states that he has a little toy of his own, which some fans theorise could actually be the Sonic Screwdriver. Unfortunately, the animation didn’t take advantage of this theory

I wish we had more departures like Victorias. Out of all the 60s female companions, she's the only one I'll make allowances for being a screamer because we found out in this story there's actually a point to it. Kinda reminds of Tegan, both are probably the most realistic ways a companion would leave. Closest we've had since these two is Martha.

Probably the worst thing about the animation is how vehicles like cars, the helicopters and the TARDIS are literally just static images. Compare this to previous animations where monsters and spaceships were fully 3D rendered. This animation definitely needs a special edition like Power of the Daleks in a few years.

One of my favourite Troughton stories, only five more stories to go until his era is complete in some way on home media!

animation: 7/10 story: 10/10 honestly this story is perfect for me. it’s scary, it’ dark, it’s a base under siege story, it’s in black and white and all the characters are fantastic. i had really high expectations of this story and it completely lived up to them. also victoria’s departure is my favourite in the entire series

Not seen it yet, the clips put up on youtube left me mixed. The tendrils and the weed looked good and had really fluid movement but the facial animations put me off, the mouths didn't always seem to match when lines were spoken and sometimes were just left open. I'm told this was delayed because of the pandemic but I think it should have been pushed back further. We're likely never getting the originals so we may as well take our time with these.

The story is good but i wasn’t the biggest fan of the animation style I would’ve preferred the Faceless ones style instead, 8/10. I hope the Evil of the Daleks is next.

The animation is noticeably worse than the others, but just for the fact it’s another Troughton story at least ticked off the list for now I’m not really bothered how the animation looked. Passable is good enough for me. They will probably do a special edition at some point anyway like they did with power

This is one story I've wanted to see ever since I got into classic Who. Probably because the surviving footage makes it look so good.

I'm still waiting for The Faceless Ones to ship here in the US (Amazon says October 20th). They don't even have a date for this one yet! From what I've seen though, the animation definitely has the 'Scooby Doo' look you mentioned so loses that creepy factor. Still, it doesn't look or sound bad so looking forward to it!

I have to agree, the animation for me was really rather off putting. The first scene with the Tardis going down to the sea was really shoddy. Also, I noticed how much it's like Inferno, just without the parallel universe plot. (I know Fury was broadcast before but just hear me out) So you have a drill or pipe that is leaking a substance that when touched transforms the person into an evil green thing. The leader of the drilling is an irritable bastard who never listens to his colleagues, theres a couple who work at the station, the male is against the leader. Theres also a second man against the leader who gets killed off half way through (yes sir Kennedy turns out to be alive at the end of inferno but you get the idea). Also the main female companion leaves. I noticed this when watching and couldn't get it out of my head that they're very similar.

We went from standard and simple designs in the Macra Terror, the updated designs in Faceless Ones that aren't as good as the Macra ones, and now this weird blocky early 00s Flash style. Representation of the scenes is lazy for me, couldn't they have just used the Macra character designs for the Doctor and Jamie. Anyway, Great Video!! =) greetings from Brazil!

On Part 4 now, part 3 certainly made me a lot more excited for the next three. Part 3's cliffhanger was really spooky

I agree it does have a Scooby Doo vibe. And Mr. Oak and Mr. Quill would have gotten away with it if it wasn't for that darn Timelord!

I know this story from the audio recording, and really like it. You always get the best special effects on radio.

I’m so glad that someone else thinks the same as I. The DVD finally came out in the US and I was extremely excited to see it. And to be honest, I was kinda let down. I think I had very high expectations. The arms were annoying because because they were too long and not proportional to the bodies. Also I laughed my ass off at your comment of Mr Quill looking like a Scooby Doo villain!

If a version of the doctor fought the fantastic four witch doctor and companions would you choose ?

I suspect these reconstructions are animated by committee rather than love of the project.

I liked the Van Lutyens character and it makes sense that there is a Dutch advisor. I like when Dr Who uses international sensibilities. The number of characters made it seem more real. I wasn’t that fond of the Robson character as it wasn’t subtle enough . He was shouting from his first scene so it was grating. But I loved his ‘help me’ scene. Overall it was pretty good with a tense atmosphere but there were some loose ends. I agree that they didn’t appear to kill it with sound, just make it retreat. Also what was the ‘you know what you must do’ bit about ? How did the creature come to the Earth? What’s it been doing all these centuries ?

I felt the same way about 'The faceless ones' animated. like some parts just felt lazy, i think it's part 3 that still exists, the opening of the live action bit has a moving camera moment, and it feels very natural, it has a lot more expressive angles, the animation is still and just has a mid shot of a man walking into a room, like they had the original footage, why didn't they copy it? it doesn't add to it, it takes it away. like if you watch the invasion animation, there are a lot of shots in that, which couldn't be done in the 1960s, like a helicopter shot and more then just a shot reverse shot, i know it was a different studio, and it was only 2 parts, but still. Macra Terror was amazing as it added to the story, like in the boiler room there are security camera, which move! it's just the little things like that what couldn't have been done in the 1960s, or the giant macra!!! why does this and the faceless ones take away?

I was never a big fan of this story. I am glad I am no longer the only person who has this opinion.

Hey Wingy isn't Becky a Troughton fan? What did she think of the story?

The animation kind of reminded me of the first season of Archer; detailed backgrounds but very static characters. Like you say, it's serviceable but it does look really awkward at times, especially during the scenes in the Harris house in episode 3. But I still enjoyed it, I've always wanted to have this story in some form and if this is as good as it gets then fair enough.

Those weird long arms are a real distraction, aren't they? The animation was adequate, but that's about it. The story's OK, but not great, so overall this gets a 6.5/10 from me. Luckily the extras, documentaries and commentaries are pretty good, so I'm not complaining.

Great review as always wingy! I personally really enjoyed it! Although the animation can be problematic at times, especially in the first two parts, I actually really quite like it (although still my least favourite animation from the last four years)! As for the story, it is still as good as i remember it! I think it almost met my expectations but, in terms of 2nd doctor story's, I still prefer the invasion and the web of fear over this, even though I would give this story a 10/10.

I liked it. I get all of your critisisms of it and agree and, like you, Fury was near or at the top of my wish list so I wish it was perfect. But budget constraints are what the are and I'm pleased it exists. Enjoyed it for what it was but unlike something like The Moonbase or The Invasion, which I think did as good a job as what we would have if they still existed, I still long for Fury to be recovered more. It's so dark and creepy in the clips we have and the making of shows the lengths they went to and how little restraint they showed in the original. Far darker than most Who. Still. Only a few to go and we should be grateful for what we have and continue to get. Great content as always. Please keep it up. 🙂

Great Story, i didn't mind the Animation that much as it's made by a different company which is probably only just started and still finding there feet so the Animation isn't the best but it's also not the worst, but the story is still great as i last rember so it gets a 8/10

Hot take: I have always thought that Fury From the Deep was overrated. It's one of the most by-the-numbers "base under siege" stories and offers no real unique spins or interesting characters. Victoria's departure is good, but frankly I think that's its only highlight.

This is exactly how I felt! I think my expectations were way too high for this release so it just fell a bit flat for me. Completely agree on the animation, it did seem lazy and not dynamic enough. I said that the torsos looked ridiculously long, but it was definitely the arms. I thought the story itself was decent though might have worked a bit better with Pertwee.

Yes, it doesn't replay the original, but in the making of interview, Gary Russell admits this and says they didn't want to recreate it slavishly but editorialises the overall storyline.

If it were ever to be `found` maybe it might seem better-or worse depending on expectations. Look how much higher `Enemy of the World` is regarded now. Season Five rather flogged the `Base under Saige` theme to death really- but `Fury` was - in my view - one of the better ones in that genre. I watched `Fury` in 68 (I was12) it scared me then as; unlike today- there wasn't much `scary` stuff about-as in the last 30 or so years. It took far less to scare kids back then. Review of this story very accurate and fair.

Looking forward to evil of the daleks and abominable snowmen, 2 troughton stories i love!

I do plan to buy this one at some point but I hope they do The Celestial Toymaker next.

The animations does put it down a notch as I know we've have better but the story itself is faultless imo and I love how Victoria was used in the story (she is one of my favourite companions tbf lol) althougth the points you make are totally valid I still love it, I've given it 9.5/10, hopefully it gets a special edition like power did tho to improve the animation The next story I want animated is either the Crusade, Evil of the Daleks or the Massacre (of St Bartholomew's Eve)

Bro I always have the belief that no matter what more classic who episodes may be found or may not but since we did get two serials found in 2013 makes me feel like maybe one day more missing episodes will found I hope so animation is good n all but I'm really just hoping more episodes will get found

Let's get some perspective on this animation question. A 60's tv show, lost for 50 years is brought back to life, because the sheer brilliance of the show means people still want to see it in sufficient numbers for it to be commercially viable. What a testament to Dr Who. There's other missing shows I'd love to see animated, but there's no market apparently ie. Ace of Wands , Callan,and Doomwatch.

i do agree that the resolution is kinda rushed, i mean ffs the monster is killed with in the first half of the episode, also van persy's(?) name in the programme is Van Lutyens

I might come across as rude . But is it weird that I’d like to see on of the doctor who lost stories done by a anime company. The one that comes to my mind as story that would look great as a anime is the the Highlander’s . Maybe I’m weird but Doctor who done anime style like tenchi or DBZ might make a nice chance of pace even if it’s just a one and done .

Honestly liked the animation style In this one, I grew up on the scooby doo style animation so I kinda like it. The animation is better then the faceless ones and power for me but bellow the Macra terror 😀

I haven't seen Fury. Seriously, two hours and not 2 hours and a half. Let's face it,(from what you said) the BBC (faceless, power, this one) shouldn't really do more. Sun and Moon (Macra), Planet 55 (reign, tenth, moonbase) were the best! Even though this story won't be found, if it would have, would this be Doctor Who does Scooby-Doo? Edit: Why is it a 12?

I actually trust your judgement more than most reviewers I have seen. Always make fare points. Not got this one yet. I will get it as I’ve been dying to see it. Shame they were lazy with the animation. There has been some really good ones in the past.

I've just watched it and I agree. It feels weirdly a lot like a Hinchcliffe story, but they hadn't got it right yet. There's way too much padding , as you say Van Lutyens is superfluous, and just too much scenes of the Doctor arguing with jobsworths to pad things out - they even bring in a new one in Megan Jones halfway through because Robson has been taken over by the seaweed so can't play that role anymore. And yes it all gets wrapped up too neatly at the end. I can imagine it seemed great at the time, but it feels like they'd done the base under siege to death by this point, and they would do the creepy gothic thing much better a few years down the line. I'm not saying it's bad, just a bit disappointing.

From the one or two clips I’ve seen of this animation it kinda looks like a 2000’s computer video game in the worst way possible Like the outside looks great but especially in the inside everything looks really bad inside

I was disappointed in the animation, too. You're right - too static in crucial places. Not as good as the 'Power' or 'Macra' animation.

I've not yet seen the animation, but from what I can see, it looks quite poor, certainly one of my least favourite. The story itself is one I've always found immensely overrated, it's one of my least favourite stories of all time.

Honestly never liked the cartoons so poor not exactly Disney fave 2nd story for me mind robber. but good news Hartnel missing episodes could be re filmed

I think the animation complaints are a little unfair. They don't have a big budget.
