I thought of this the second I heard Akinola’s theme. It underlies Gold’s theme so well I was both disappointed and surprised it wasn’t utilised in the episode.
Akinola specifically designed his motifs to be able to blend with each other. He created a far more dynamic palette of music than Murray Gold did - each of Segun's themes can be weaved together, and we see that in the show. If a scene contains the Master and the Cybermen, their themes will be blended. Murray Gold didn't even attempt this - in fact, there are lots of examples in the RTD era of Gold's tracks simply blaring across the scene regardless of the context, the most egregious being the scene in Doomsday where the Cyberman theme is in full swing as they are massacred by the Daleks. It makes me wish we'd seen a scene of Daleks vs Cybermen during Chibnall's era, the theme combo would have been legendary
this is absolutely brilliant mixing, it feels really artificial and awesome but i think the show had to move away from murray golds music, especially the cybermen and dalek themes, its became too repetitive and stale some innovation was needed for the 13th doctor era
Counterpoint. "Don't fix what ain't broke" as the Americans would say. That aside, following that logic, the Dr Who main theme is nearly eighty years old. Surely we need to move away from it so it doesn't become repetitive or stale? I don't think anyone would call Imperial March stale.
@@HisHolyMajesty its just boring now and it spoils the surprise when the cybermen appear, the earthshock one worked amazingly but it wasnt used forever Onwards and upwards, let's see some more sinister action cyber themes in future!
If the music was actually better I'd agree. The Cybermen and Master themes are the only time it's even passable. Never "innovate" to atmospheric crap. It's a sci fi show, not a restaurant for the French.
