In regards to the paint on the Metaltron, I think that the lighter bronze is fairly accurate (but it should still be a bit darker/duller, or the gold should be brighter) due to a weird bit of Dalek prop history. The Metaltron prop (MT1) was built by Mike Tucker and his team for the episode ‘Dalek’, but two additional Daleks were built by Specialist Models for ‘Bad Wolf’. Because these Daleks were built by a different team, they had a different paintscheme, most obviously with the midsection band being painted bronze instead of gold. Looking at pictures of the props, it looks to me like the Specialist Model Daleks also had a darker shade of bronze than MT1. This all meant that MT1 stood out too much, so it was repainted in the Specialist Models colours for ‘Bad Wolf’. This is why the Metaltron is so unique among bronze Daleks. MT1 would soon be repainted again to be Dalek Sec, meaning that this set actually contains two figures of the same Dalek prop! Sidenote: MT1 was involved in a bit of a fiasco at the 2006 BAFTAs. RTD, Julie Gardner, and Phil Collinson were determined to keep the return of the Daleks in ‘Doomsday’ a secret, so much so that they’d replaced the word ‘Dalek’ with the word ‘enemy’ in the scripts. However, thanks to an oversight, the BBC had sent MT1 - now in Dalek Sec’s colours - to appear on-stage during the BAFTAs four days before the start of series 2, and the new paintjob made it fairly obvious that the Daleks were coming back. RTD, watching helplessly from the crowd, could only say ‘Oh for fuck’s sake, it’s the black one!’ All of this information is thanks to Dalek 6388, of course :D
Started watching this channel sometime around 2008 or 2010, and I’m pretty sure this is the first time I’ve ever gotten a _Doctor Who_ figure set before you. The first few minutes of the video tell me why lmao Had to order mine online though, my usual store - AFAIK the **only** physical store stocking new _Doctor Who_ figures in New South Wales - unfortunately closed down. RIP, Who Central.
I caused a mild amount of chaos with these daleks, because I was sent these, they came the day of announcement and I rushed a video through and put it up that same day. I found out, after everyone messaged Al about why my Sec had a glossy skirt, that he'd accidentally sent the pre-approval paint app prototypes, so Sec as released in shops didn't have a gloss skirt, and the paint apps on the bronze dalek were pretty different too. I didn't learn that until it was way too late to put out any sort of correction that would reach anyone, and there weren't any other videos for well over a week, so that's almost certainly confused some people. I really like the colours on that final apps bronze dalek, I was looking at them in my own local B&M, I was very tempted to get a set, but I'd just been burgled so I really can't justify spending money on daleks that I kind of have already, maybe after christmas if they're still in stock then.
Dalek Sec is perfect, no exaggeration. There’s nothing left to improve, this is the definitive release of Sec as far as the toy line is concerned. But I’m really confused about the Bronze Dalek’s mishap with the limb joints. This is something they’ve gotten right on every single release of a new series Dalek, ever, until now. I can’t pretend it’s a massive deal, but what makes it frustrating is that we know they know better. I struggle to see how this can be accidental: it’s not just failing to get something right, they would have had go out of their way to deviate from their well-entrenched routine of fifteen years to get this wrong. It’s only a tiny thing, but I’m seeing a pattern forming of bizarre mistakes that seem to take more effort than actually getting it right would have.
Dalek Sec is 2010 Earthshock Cyberman/Omega from the Enemies of the Third Doctor set level good. How wonderful to have him in the slimmer, more accurate sculpt after all these years!
Still wondering why they never bothered to try this approach to Cybermen figures. There are still a lot of Cyber variants we don’t have. Especially the modern ones, but we’re also still notably missing the Wheel in Space Cybermen and an Attack of The Cybermen Controller. Plus the Cybermen from Nightmare in Silver, and the Warriors. Not to mention Ashad.
They are lovely figures though I will admit I wasn’t initially keen on them when I first saw them but I now love them! I have fond memories of Dalek Sec in 2006 and being so fascinated by its new livery at the time so I’m happy I finally got a more accurate figure of him. I’m laughing it’s the other way around for me Matt. I’m in the middle of hunting the Remembrance set and it’s these new series Daleks that keep appearing in my B&Ms and not the one I’m after!
I have fond memories of Sec, too. _Daleks in Manhattan_ was the first Dalek story I saw, and, IIRC, Sec taught me that Daleks aren’t robots in the most shocking way possible :D
Okay, the base bronze for NSDs really needs to be a bit darker, because until you mentioned it I never noticed the band is indeed gold as it should be on this one. It's just too close to the colour of the rest of him for my taste
Are we going to get a Parting of the Ways Emperor possibly? Or a Stolen Earth Supreme? They haven't even done the Special Weapons Dalek to my recollection...
I just got these today and my Time War Survivor had sharpie looking marks on the helmet, black paint around some of the rivets, scuff marks on the fender, etc which I was able to remove with soap, rag, and water. What I didn’t expect was for the intentional weathering/black wash to come off as by the time I was done I had removed a lot of it.
Only tried one store so far but my Dalek hunting has also been unsuccessful. I did manage to grab hold of a Ninth Doctor collector's set (which I hadn't got yet) so my trip out wasn't a total loss.
Im just on my B&M hunt right now, managed to get a deadly assassin set but these daleks are frustratingly elusive. Ive got one more shop to check then I fear ill have to give up
Really was worried he wasn't going to cover this one, he missed out the bronze SFX back in 2012 He missed the 2013 crucible dalek with weathering, paradigm strategist and asylum set from 2014
Great review, yeah this dalek sec is more screen accurate, the matt black on the neck rings is correct. Just under certain light it looks glossy. What I don't understand is why after the renegade set why move onto the NSDs when you have 4 options of imperial to choose from drone, swd, emperor, destroyed dalek. Why skip the imperial daleks? As for new series yeah they could of had a parting of the ways set, black and gold like you say and the darker almost chocolate bronze with black dome emperor guard with standard attachments. To get any NSD sets really they will need new parts for attachments, ie assault claw, sensor arm, claw, chibs new arm, executioner gun. So not sure what will happen but there are rumours of them getting a bigger budget as RTD wants a push on merch.
If I had to guess, they don’t want to release Imperial Daleks so soon after releasing very similar-looking Necros Daleks. Wouldn’t surprise me if the next wave of figures includes _Remembrance_ Imperials and _Resurrection_ Daleks.
Everything about Metaltron's figure is 100% accurate to the episode, including the shade of bronze and gold, except for the gold joints, which should be black.
@@batmanmarchYes, I think so. Metaltron's prop had a distinct livery from other Time War Dalek props because another company made it. Metaltron's damaged prop appears to be darker than the pristine one, though.
The reason I don't like these new sculpts for the NSD's is just for floppy the gun and plunger arms are, they bend and break off so easily compared to all thw other daleks for some reason
