Eccleston is an outstanding actor, and whenever his delivery is dark and/or intense and gritty, his performance is genuinely jaw-dropping. That said, I could never properly buy him in his more comedic takes, as if he was just portraying the idea of how The Doctor should be, rather than flat out acting the part. It simply felt forced and awkward to me. Nonetheless, his confrontation with the title character for the first time in "Dalek" is an example of what I'm saying, his performance being nothing short of brilliant.

If you enjoyed Dalek you would probably like the Big Finish audio drama 'Jubilee'. It was also written by Robert Shearman, and in fact some of its plot elements and dialogue would be reused in Dalek. It also features a lone, imprisoned Dalek. However, they are very different stories, as Jubilee has some very interesting social commentary behind it while Dalek is more concerned with (masterfully) reintroducing the Daleks as villains. Honestly, all of Shearman's contributions to Big Finish are well worth a listen. The Chimes of Midnight is one of my favorite Doctor Who stories of all time, on any medium.

Great video, thank you. Glad to see there are more like me who believe #9 was the best. I wish they could have brought him back to play "the war doctor". Regardless I think he's the best because of his abilities to do serious and silly at the same time and how well he transitions his emotions. "Go, now, don't drop the banana!"

Something I think worked really well for the first season was that it had the same gonzo style camera work as farspace, which gave it a very moody, sinister feeling that was also somehow funny at the same time.

Tennant is my favourite Doctor, although I agree with you that Eccleston deserves more love! Season 1 is a great choice for the best season of New Who, but I'd argue that seasons 4 and 5 are also worthy contenders. The show in general fell apart for me after those seasons, the occasional brilliant episode aside (such as 'Heaven Sent', for instance). I definitely prefer RTD's era of Doctor Who to Moffat's era, the latter of which made me fall out of love with the show after season 5.

S1 is very strong and captures why the show has endured - wonder, imagination and adventure with some genuine chills and thrills. It might waver a bit in the production values, fx but it’s all heart, and much of that heart was Ecclestons performance, my fave of the nu-who doctors. Eccleston was brilliant casting and while he cut a very different figure from his predecessors he was unmistakably the same character I remember growing up watching classic who in the 80s. Fantastic!

Christopher Eccleston was great. I thought it was a shame that he chose to only take the role for a single season. His charecter and past could have been explored so much more. The only real competition for best Doctor in my opinion is David Tennant. Both really had a great chemistry with Billie Piper's charecter which made it feel more real than a lot of other versions.

This season was my first experience with DW. My first time watching it I liked it but I didn't think much of it. It wasn't till Ten came long that I really started to love the show. That being said, I went back and watched this season again recently and just absolutely loved it. I didn't fully appreciate it the first time but I certainly do now.

At the very least he's the most underrated Doctor. When people think Doctor Who these days they think of David Tennant or Matt Smith. Sometimes even Capaldi but Eccleston is practically forgotten despite the fact that he portrayed the darkest Doctor we've ever had. No other Doctor quite recaptured the rage, desperation and fear that Eccleston had of the Daleks. Back in Series 1 you saw his Dalek scenes and you could truly believe that the Dalek's could push the Doctor far enough to commit genocide. This Doctor was willing to wipe out humanity to stop them while Tennant scolds his other self for even destroying the Daleks. Eccleston showed there was a limit to how many chances the Doctor would give. Tennant wasn't the no second chances kind. He's the man that forgave the Master, Davros, The Daleks and just the worst of the worst. Eccleston,.was the one who had his limits and would go to extremes if you pushed them. His Doctor would definitely have touched the wires together in Genesis of the Daleks and I don't think I can say that any other Doctor would except for the War Doctor.

Hi Rowan. Christopher Eccleston was my first Doctor. Before this, I was, primarily a Trekker of 43 years convinced "Star Trek" was the best science fiction tv show ever made. Eccleston convinced me "Doctor Who" was far superior by the episode "Father's Day." Just like that, I was a Whovian after 8 episodes, and I've never looked back thanks to his phenomenal run as the Doctor. He reestablished the lore of the Whoniverse in a mere 13 episodes. That's just fantastic when you think about it. While I did like Tennant, loved Smith and came to appreciate Capaldi, Eccleston will still be my all time favorite Doctor.

I'm a "yank" (I'm from the south, so that term is ironic) but I very much agree. Sorry for this super long comment but I am longwinded so just consider this a comment to any future Doctor Who vids as well. Obviously the Doctor isn't as big a figure over here, or at least wasn't back in my day. My only real previous exposure to the Doctor was the American Made-For-TV movie with the 8th Doctor. There was a big enough push for this in America that I remember watching the 9th Doctors season and I absolutely love it for all the reasons mentioned. TBH I started to fall out of the show almost immediately after the regeneration. While I think Tennant is a spectacular actor, Ecclestons Doctor was "my Doctor" and Tennant was, to me, the reverse. 9 wore a grim coat and was someone who was a far better person than he thought he was. 10 was all smiles, but gave into the darker side of his nature so often it felt almost con-man-ish to me. I did watch a bit of 11, but I'm can't help but wonder if you quit for the same reason I did. While Moffat is brilliant with someone overseeing him to guide his odder ideas, with no one over him it became too much of the same. "Statues that can be anywhere and get you if you look away" is brilliant. "Oh and if you stare at them too long they get inside your mind" is like a kids game of one-upmanship, and when you get to "AND THE STATUE OF LIBERTY IS ONE OF THEM!" I can't help but facepalm. (Not to even mention it's Ninja like ability to sneak up on people) I think I hung on occassionally watching until the War Doctor special, and let that be my proverbial goodbye, a few frames and a last rerecorded bit of "My Doctor" kind of nicely closing the chapter on my being Doctor Who fan. I am tempted to give the new female Doctor (she'd be 13 right?) a chance but have yet to bite the bullet and do it.

+Rowan J Coleman like you say its really down to personal preference, i liked both 9 and 10, but i loved 11, just didn't connect at all with 12, have high hopes for 13 :) I think with 11 I just loved everything about the changes they made, I know its abrasive for some, I felt that way about 12's run, its the only time for me where I actually wasn't fussed about watching the show.

My favourite was always 11th but after rewatching all the new who for probably the millionth time, 9th is definitely now a close second if not equal. I love him so much and I respect how the first season started everything so I always hate it when people say he is bad or boring.

I’ll never understand why so many try to pretend this season doesn’t belong with the rest of new who. Def the best season. Eccelston brought something to the role that made for one of the most human doctors, while keeping himself at that heightened time lord level. Plus, Dalek is one of the greatest pieces of television ever

Chris is my third favorite Doctor just behind Jon Pertwee and Peter Capaldi. As a very passionate Whovian, this means a lot. Series 1 is without a doubt one of, if not the best, series of the show. Eccleston was the first Doctor I ever saw and he's what sucked me into the show and is the reason I'm so hopelessly lost in this universe.

I'm just going to say my thoughts on every incarnation of the doctor 1- good, it’s sad that I can’t finish his era with stories missing and I hate what Moffat did to him 2- great, it’s sad that I can’t finish his era with stories missing to 3- favorite Doctor absolute perfection 4- excellent work 5- eh alright, at least he has the best regeneration story and his bad companions stay dead 6- terrible, he is the worst doctor weather you like it or not is what I would be saying if 12 didn’t exist 7- awesome but his first seasons were awful 8- is this one part of classic who? War Doctor- His existence just creates confusion on what the charter stands for 9- absolutely fantastic 10r- The 10th Doctor is fine when he is not being a winy drama queen about mercy, war, or dying. 11- OK 12- A really annoying, argent, excruciating ripoff of Rick Sanchez. 13- can't comment yet because series 11 hasn't aired at the time I'm writing this

As someone who's kept up with the show my favourite seires' are 2, 5 And 10 as I find them the most consistently strong with a few standout episodes like World Enough And Time, Vincent And The Doctor and The Satan Pit two parter. Though I can understand why you would've stopped watching, especially after season 7 and 8

Really, you think series 2 is consistently strong with New Earth, The Idiot's Lantern, Fear Her and Love and Monsters?
@meris8486
@meris8486 6 лет назад
I'm hugely nostalgic for series 2 as it was the first season I watched and I was very young at the time. Though I do remember most of the episodes quite well, I should probably rewatch them at some point to give a more critical approach. Personally, I enjoyed New Earth, Idiots Lantern and Fear Her. Love and Monsters was a waste of time though. But every season has at least 1 episode that's like that. Tooth And Claw is my favorite popcorn episode of the show. It's light, fluffy and just plain fun. School Reunion is fantastic, it's funny, emotional at times, the monsters are interesting and Sarah Jane is awesome. The Girl In the Fireplace is obviously great cause it was back when Moffat was more grounded. The Cybermen two parter is pretty good though it could've been done better like in World Enough and Time. The Satan Pit two-parter is terrific. The second best Base under siege story that the shows ever done and it's terrifying at points. The Finale is a real high point for the Davies era. It's awesome seeing Daleks and Cybermen fight. And the ending is emotionally gut wrenching. So yeah, series 2 is great.

Regardless of any other considerations about the season, I agree that Christopher Eccleston's performance in the role was fantastic. It has certainly never been surpassed. Since we all have to say which actor our favorite Dr, I'll inflict my opinions on you all and proclaim to the face of the world that he and Matt Smith both are. I find David Tennant is a very good actor, but has less charisma than these two. Peter Capaldi is great, but the character he inherited and had to embody is a bit of a half-failed recipe.

We could've used more Paul McGann, I will admit that much, and even though there's the audio stories, I mean full genuine episodes with McGann. Still, with what we got in Season 1, I would not trade out a single moment with Eccleston for McGann. He is my favorite Doctor and that wonderful arc was executed so perfectly. I'm glad RTD got Chris on board for Doctor Who and chose him over other possible candidates. Those two had history together before the reboot, mainly with The Second Coming.
