Trilbee reviews 'The Power of Three'. Is there enough power here to save this series? (Yeah, I'm running out of gags here).
The Power of Three
Directed by: Douglass Mackinnon
Written by: Chris Chibnall
Starring: Matt Smith, Karen Gillan, Arthur Darvill
There have been many ways to invade the Earth, and the Doctor has seen them all -- or so he always thought. And then the human race wakes up one morning and discovers the world has been overrun by... "very small cubes", which then proceed to... do nothing at all. A plan is afoot, humanity is endangered -- but by what and how and, above all, when?
For the first time in his world-saving career the Doctor has to call upon one of the least of his virtues: patience. And the Ponds face something possibly more terrifying than any world-ending apocalypse: the Doctor is moving in!

It's heartbreaking. And I haven't even watched the full episode. That last scene.... *breaks down in tears*.

My Matt Smith Moment of the Week honourable mention is when the Doctor tells Rory's dad what happened to his former companions, and promises it will never happen to Amy and Rory (which most likely means it will).

Was the topic of what death means to the doctor ever touched upon? I mean, we see him mourn over dead companions, and there it makes sense because he'd not be able to go back in time and see them again after they met him as that would mean crossing his own timeline - but with the brigadier, what stops him from going back in time and saying goodbye? Having that brandy with him?

1. If Amy gets pregnant again in the next episode, I'm totally gonna say I called it. That would make their 20 minute divorce in Asylum actually mean something. 2. Rory's dad ~~== Donna's grandad

Thanks for this great review. The only thing I missed was the little scene between Brian and the Doctor about the fates of former companions. Also, for everyone who is interested, Dredd is really good, so check it out!

, for this episode we had the best form of the DOCTOR WHO logos we have had this season need to say EVER featuring an excellent plot-line, amazing characters, great lines such as ‘Yes, You, You not me, I hate being Patient, Patience is for Wimps,’ and ‘Well my firing laser bolts and now it’s surfing the web’, great acting from Matt, Karen, Arthur and Kate this episode is bound to be considered a classic. I rate it - 10/10

Honestly, the jumble in this episode, along with the second thought that was the last act is just another example of why two parters should never have been axed. While there is argument that this wouldn't have worked to well stretching it out further, I felt it had a build up that could have taken it further. I still firmly agree with your rating and your comments on the final act were pretty much spot on to what I was thinking while watching the episode.

You have missed some thing - it took 1 year for the cubes to activate, so that people would become used to them. They would take them into there homes, to work, in the car. This way when they did activate, there would be no "safe zones" where there were no cubes, in order to make sure that everyone dies.

This episode illuminated the reason for the divorce story: it was a convincing way to suddenly talk about Amy's infertility & show that it didn't matter to Rory. Starting a family is a prime reason to stop traveling, especially with the significant passage of time (10 years). Remove that obstacle and you have a believable dramatic conflict - continuing vs. stopping. You then can pull an even more dramatic end to your characters' journey: they *chose* to continue (& look where it leads...)

"For those of you who don't know the Brigadier…" How can ANYONE call themselves a Doctor Who fan and not know about the Brigadier? After the Doctor, he's possibly the show's most popular character and he's a MASSIVE part of the show's history.

Dinosaurs on a Spaceship, like DOAS the episode was action-packed and i yet again stated - Good on you, Chibnall - i was impressed by how Chibnall handled Unified Intelligence Taskforce’s return and he was amazing at bringing in Kate Stewart (daughter of the 60s, 70s and 80s classic hero Brigaider Alisater Gordon Leth-Bridge Stewart)the alien nurses

Future Amy and Rory in Cwmtaff are actually past versions of them from their viewpoint. Hungry Earth/Cold Blood is set in 2020, and in one of this year's episodes (Dinosaurs on a Spaceship, I think), Amy mentions that they have been on-and-off travelling with the Doctor for 10 years. Seeing as Amy presumably started travelling with the Doctor in 2010, that's exactly the point in time where they visited Cwmtaff. So maybe they went in vacation there that year? They just happen to visit 2012 last.

well here are my theories to close the plot hole 1) She could not move because everyone was looking at her. This was just the one time everybody was ignoring her. And I think doctor who seemed to have established any statue can be a stone angel because we get a variety of weeping angels. 2) Once you learn an event in your future it becomes a fixed point. So i'm assuming that Rory and Amy became fixed points as a result. Kind of like Captain Jack. The best the doctor can do now is visit.

AND that's not even my biggest problem with this. This is a big cop-out. They didn't want to kill of the Ponds, they didn't want the Doctor to leave them behind because it's too dangerous (if so, then he couldn't take a new companion for same reasons) They didn't want the Ponds to tell the Doctor "Go Away! or Stop taking us on adventures." And they couldn't drop them in a parallel word... so they made up this silly and easily fixable excuse so they can return for the 50th Anniversary.

There were some explanations that I think you missed MrTardis... The little girl was a relay, there were seven of them. The cubes activated for 47 min because that's how long it took for them to work out the best way of taking out a chunk of the human race. They worked out it was heart attack. The cubes activated for research on killing methods, not to determine whether or not to kill. Heart attack not the best solution, but... eh...

cubed is a mathematical term for a number that has been timesed by itself 3 times e.g. 3X3X3=9. That would be 3 cubed. The three of them when together produce a epic team that is much higher than they are by themselves.
@lugiawingsKH
@lugiawingsKH 12 лет назад
4:42 oh my god yes! 13:56 the point of the cubes activation was to scan the world to find the best way to kill all the humans, they waited a year to be in all the homes so maximum humans would die, they didn't all die so more cubes were needed, i think the episode should have been two parts and had so much stuff that it couldn't be editted to make sense. also didn't you think the title was slightly irrelevant? i didn't get it. but i still loved the review and look forward to more.

I loved the build up to this, it's like they did what Miracle Day was trying to do and yet SO much better and without spending endless tedious episodes, but also without it seeming rushed. I loved the emotional stuff too,but then the whole thing seemed to grind to a screeching halt with that dumb anticlimax. I really wanted this plot to be a 2 parter. The season's only 5 episodes for some reason, why couldn't it be longer and let this be a 2 parter? Also, I really hope next week's episode is ok!

I know that you review each episode on it's own merits, but this is one case I think it should be viewed as part of a whole. I'd give it a 6/10 because this should have been the first episode rather than Asylum of the Daleks, because this would have been a great set up for the series after this, rather than near the end.

Chris Chibnall has written the two best episodes this series so far, while Moffat has written the worst two (if you count the recent christmas special). I feel like I'm in the Bizzaro Universe. If Mark Gatiss's episode ends up being too awesome for my brain to handle, and the midseries finale ends up being shit, I'll fucking cry.

the reason cubed means the power of 3 is in maths cubed means 1x1x1 or 2x2x2 ext . so when they say cubed means the power of 3 as in you need 3

You're not paying me or youtube to watch this video. Whereas you're watching Doctor Who thanks to the money you spend on a TV license. That's the big difference between me rushing a review, and a writer (or editor, whatever happened here) rushing an episode of a popular TV show. I can handle being reviewed. But I found a flaw in your review so I reviewed it right back.

Man, this is easily the best Doctor Who episode, or at least the best since Turn Left. It has the right amount of funny, the right amount of serious, and we get to see the Doctor playing Wii Tennis (which, ironically, i had just gotten into playing...)! What could be more fun then that?! The only complaint people had is that they wished it could be two-parts, but i bet that's so they could get more of this good thing!
@ash356

Agreed pretty much. The build-up was superb, the pay-off? Not so much. It was really nice to see the Brig's daughter as well - hopefully she'll be a recurring character throughout the present day stories :) Finally, Christmas theme was obvious. I missed the bulbs one to start with, but a few people suggested it was the Christmas lights flickering at the very end. Speaking of which, that 'power of three' line was cheesier than actual cheese.

here's my thoughts - Power of Three was the best episode for the season so far, with a lot to go for the episode got it’s morals out quickly and nicely and placed the audience in a state of awe through-out the episode’s 45 minute action packed lot, with the cubes being a rela mystery i was suspended in my seat for the entire episode, although the brushing off of the Shakri was not overly good it was made up for by the amazing music and comedy writing from Chris Chibnall who also wrote episode 2:

To pompously answer for him, yes. People do care. Actually, Will injects so much of his personality, himself, into these well-thought-out-and-well-executed reviews (which he appears to do mainly on his free time, his own initiative) that, obviously, the audience gets involved. Why is this mysterious to you? The better critics ensconce themselves in the process, and the lesser pretend their process is removed from their personality.

This story screams "two-parter." It obviously needed to be given more time. This story would have been WAY better had Part One been the stuff with The Doctor staying with Amy and Rory and Part Two been the actual invasion stuff. The Shakri seemed very interesting, but we didn't have enough to time to explore them. This story would have worked MUCH better as the first one we saw this season since Asylum of the Daleks has the forced divorced plotline and just sort of plops the characters in there.

I agree that both the cube plot set up and the "revelation" didn't really fit together as a whole but the Shakri and their Tally beliefs was pretty badass. Basically neutral judges of the universe that tally the good and bad. The line where the doctor says they were Time Lord bed time stories hints they judge(d) Time Lords too, which imo is pretty cool. Felt like the plot and villain weren't originally meant to be together, fuse an amazing intro to a good ending and yea call it a show.

Hey TARDIS! I was hoping you'd answer this in your review but, anyway! Could you please explain the meaning of the title of this episode? It's probably because I'm thick and I missed something incredibly important but, why was it called 'The Power of Three'? And how does 'Cubed' mean that?! It's just too risky to bring them on adventures... and hey, there isn't a paradox as long as the tombstone is there before they arrive. Gatiss has written the most consistantly bad episodes in Doctor Who since Moffat's run as lead. Night Terrors. Victory of the Daleks. Even his works for the show before that weren't really the creme of the crop. Maybe Sci-fi isn't his thing, as he has a habit of not explaining anything (gavity bubbles, face stealing and peg dolls) and solving problems with the power of love (the oblivion bomb android and the resolution of Night Terrors).
