Doctor Who review of season 1 episode 6 where Nucti Gatwa almost gets Ruby Sunday killed because he's too pre-occupied with another man. Throughout most of this season the doctor has even been responsible for saving the people in the show, and it's the same here. This doctor isn't a hero, he's pathetic, and requires normal people to sacrifice themselves due to his poor decisions. The end of this episode is awful, after having not cared about Ruby throughout the entire episode we're supposed to believe he suddenly cares more about her than the world. And then when his fancy man goes instead, he just stops caring about him instantly! This shows Doctor Who can always get worse, and does. But surprisingly this wasn't written by Russel T Davies. Loki writers pulling out another banger it seems. But what did you think of what you saw? Let me know your thoughts down below and as always, thanks for watching :)
Of course, even today you can tell the class someone was born to by the way the speak. Ruby would have been a maid in 1813 while among the elites, nothing more.
Black aristocrats. Open interracial dating. Open homosexual affairs. People going down on one knee to propose marriage (not before Victorian times, they didn't) "Okay" (not until Martin Van Buren became prominent in American politics; the word was coined as a shortening of his "Old Kinderhook" nickname) "Wallflower" (not used for women who don't mix at parties before 1820) And Billie Eilish on the soundtrack! *SO* 1813! When the birds are the most historically-accurate part of the episode…
To be that person, the "old kinderhook" thing is a myth. "OK" is actually an acronym from early journalists who had to write in shorthand because of lack of recording devices. But still American, so your overall point is still correct.
AHH the good old days. When we tolerated strange looking monsters, took on board pepper pots as the most deadly creatures of the universe. Mad professors, Rogue time lords and a robot dog. Oh and the weekly cliffhanger....
what show are you remembering? dr who has always been a leftist show, unless you are reminiscing about the 1960s original show with the rampant sexism, then dr who has always been pro lgbt and minority rights
1812, so gay sex was still a capital crime in the UK. Also 0.09% of the population was black as it'd spiked just before this, mostly domestic servants and sailors. A house that big would probably have one as a curiosity and sign of wealth.
God, Ncuti sucks as The Doctor. He has no presence, he's annoying, he has no character. He's just, "the gay one." Frankly this show can't get cancelled soon enough.
Dr: Aww but babes .... Me: aww, please fuck off ... He is annoying, the fact that he thinks he is above criticism because he likes men is just the cherry on top.
That "first ever same sex kiss" claim is 100% false. Jack harkness kisses the doctor goodbye in season one with eccleston. Unrelated side note, eccleston was only around for 1 season, but i respect his ability to get the ball rolling for the show
Yeah, I dunno how they'll get away with that claim, especially since people on twitter frequently post pics of that kiss- they think they're owning "haters" by showing (in their minds) that Who was "always" woke, lol. Also, a lot of such kisses happened in the spinoff Torchwood. In fact, parts of this ep reminded me of one of the s1 Torchwood eps, the 2nd to last, I believe, where Jack goes back to WWII and romances the Captain whose name he took.
@@marychocolatefairy that's because the show is being coopted by activists who are obsessed with "Firsts" and are perfectly willing to partake in Revisionist history in order to make their point work
Don't get why the Doctor is a horndog all of a sudden when he's usually not interested in relationships or doesn't register when someone is flirting with him.
What's the point of a show about time travel if there is no difference between the past and the current period? Ruby walks through each "new world" without any seeming wonder or interest. And she and the Doctor just seamlessly fit in everywhere they go despite being strangers in strange lands. Seriously, what is the point of the show anymore?
The doctor has always fit in everywhere he goes this is nothing new people have a habit too just believe and not question the doctor. Prime example being any single time he breaks into someone's home and they're like oh this is fine or when they say "why am I telling you all of this" and he responds "I just got one of those faces" this has been a trait of the doctor since forever even before nuwho
@@newhandlewhodis Okay, but I did say SHE and the Doctor. Typically his companions show a little more emotion when encountering robots, aliens, stretched bits of skin with faces and the Tardis itself. Remember Rose's reaction to the TARDIS, remember when she burst into tears after asking The Dr, " are you an alien?". Remember when characters actually reacted to the weird and wonderful things that were happening around them?
It's what happens when you don't care about the source material and just used the IP to make your own show and piggy back off the name to gain an audience. They could have made their own time travel show with Guti, but it would have meant making a new IP, too risky for them.
I love shows like dr who and acolyte. I'll never watch them, but the reviews I get to see because of how trash they are is far better entertainment value
They've probably seen the monstrosity Netflix did with 'Persuasion', and taken it as accurate. You know, the one with the extremely talented Dakota Johnson. That, or their grandmothers told them the truth, and never mind what they taught them at school...
Why are they so obsessed with incorporating small minded earth-bound racism into every - single - fucking episode of Doctor Who now? Not to mention in such a ham-fisted and moronic way? Can we just have some light sc-fi entertainment with no sexual or racist agendas again? And that goes for Star Trek and Star Wars too! WTF has happened to "entertainment"?
While abandoning his "friend" even after knowing there were murderers on the loose. Sorry Ruby, but getting my asshole rammed after talking to a guy for five minutes is far more important for my character development.
Anyone else think that the doctor was creepily aggressive with his advances? Like had it been a male doctor and a female victim, wouldnt this be seen as problematic?
The fact they think a Roman emperor from Libya was black is outstandingly comical. African and black are not the same thing, Africa is a continent, not a bloody country, he was born in Cerne, a few miles to the east of present day Benghazi, he was Arabic. These are the same people that will call a person born in Canada a Canadian, and one born in Mexico a Mexican, and not by the continent they were born, north American. Pick a lane and stick with it.
Well, not Arabic so much as Italian and Punic (Carthaginian/Canaanite). But yeah, just because he had curly hair and came from Leptis Magna, there are people who want to say he was black. Lots of people from Canaan had curly hair, but not the same curly hair as black people. You can look at his statues and decide for yourself.
Not only African and black not the same thing, but black and black are not the same thing. Africa is not one big happy POC fun times bouncy castle. Rwandan Genocide - which, and lets be brutal here, is the reason 2 year old Gatwa moved to Scotland - was where 800,000 'blacks' were killed by 'different blacks' for the crime of being 'black'. The idea from the show runners that only Whites are racist when you have a lead actor who could have very nearly been murdered by blacks for being the wrong sort of black is disturbing. Literal race based genocide existed within living memory but no, white people are bigots. RTD has VERY... interesting world views.
And at war with the United States, and in a different war with Norway and Denmark. And just the year before had finished a war with the Russian Empire and yet another war with the Xhosa tribes in South Africa.
THE MIXED RACE BRITONS CONQUORED THE WORLD. BLACK MEN BOUGHT AND SOLD SLAVES! WHITE WOMEN FAWNED! /s It gets so so confused, are the British bad for colonialism if they were all the races of the world when they did it? such mixed messages, I only hate watch this through Disarpu.
Him just snapping and saying no one will remember Ncuti was cathartic. He's garbage as the Doctor. All he can do is excitable gay man, he captures nothing else about The Doctor.
I think he might be the only one subjecting himself to this still. I haven't even seen a mention from Nerdrotic on this. HE did say he was done, but I didn't believe him lol
So I was with my parents when this aired live on air and I asked, flickering through the guide. "So you want to watch Dr who?" To which my dad responded with. "Are you trying to kill me off and receive your inheritance faster?" So yeah even my parents who will watch nearly anything, can't even bear to watch this shit now. Although tbf my parents are pretty based, my dad was always good with figuring out story beats before they happened and he introduced me to the LOTR films. Meanwhile my mum is a huge mystery nerd, watching all sorts of murder mysteries from foreign countries.
Ask your mum if she wants to watch some Roman Polanski films, deplorable man if he was guilty, but the psycholocal thrillers he made were amazing Edit: of changed to if
When the "Doctor" said "Insta -Strictly" my stomach turned. WTF would the Doctor know about modern television? This show is shallow and pathetic, crapped out by people who are shallow and pathetic.
I hate that the appreciation of the early 1800s is now attributed to the historically inaccurate Bridgerton instead of Jane Austen which is actually written by a contemporary of the time and is 1000% better than that modern bastardized trash.
I'm a tomboy that can sometimes appreciate a good romance or romcom show... but I cannot bring myself to watch Bridgerton. It looks stvpid AF. I catch pieces of it when my mom, sister, & niece have watched it and cannot help thinking what tripe it is. And I like the regency period of European history too.
Plus, this doctor would be considered a strange person with how he looks. Most of the people at this occasion would always be around him with questions of who he was and what his position in society was. Just being with a white woman would be considered very unusual at best, but then with a male would make others very suspicious.
@@bri55118 STop it. This is FICTION. Nothing true matters anymore. REEEEEEEEEEE! Doctor is super cool guy that does other super cool guys in the butthole. Just accept it for the PLOT.
@@Mobius118 I presume you're missing a comma and a question mark. If so, then yes, it's weird, even nowadays, it's weird to see 2 blokes dancing together. Just coz there's nothing wrong with something, doesn't mean it isn't weird to see.
I'm trying to find the CNN article I saw a number of years ago talking about some anachronistic society dedicated to Victorian England. They were like, "We love the clothes, the food, the lifestyle. We especially appreciate that there was more equality in Victorian society." I'm like.... WTF? One of the most stratified societies EVER, and you think there was equality? Geez.
“He’s too much of a coward” The man who scorched and locked away his own planet in time to end a war is a coward. Okay, sure. They couldn’t have misunderstood this character more if they tried.
After a full season of gay orgies, the Fruity Gatwa Doctor can then finally volunteer himself to the Sisters of Plenitude on New Earth as he will have contracted every known disease in the universe for them to test on.
Wow this version of the doctor is so rampantly incompetent that he makes the version from the old Red Nose Day parody 'the Curse of the Fatal Death' played by Rowan Atkinson look like the genuine article by comparison. *Edit: Also stop comparing this mess of a man to Buggs Bunny, Buggs is at least 10 times the man this ninny is.
Surely you don't expect the writers to spend ten seconds researching such tedious facts. Or the numerous people who viewed the episode before broadcast to know or care about British history.
Not to mention that Portugal is effectively a vassal state after Britain backed in during the Peninsula campaigns against the French and Spain well within the Britain sphere for the same reasons. Britain has yet to reach 'Peak Empire' in 1813, but are still a global power challenged by few. Having a character say that line is either rubbish writing or subliminally clever in showing the bird people are actually idiots. I pick the first. I mean seriously it is like saying 'Let's take over the universities and then get all the arts students to do nothing but hold protests'.
Exactly especially all the suffering death pain and destruction he has witnessed over thousands of years why would he suddenly start crying at every tiny little thing???
Yeah, this is not true 😭. And so what if he's crying? It makes complete narrative sense. He is the last of his species, surrounded by death and destruction. Since the last Time War, he has been pushing himself forward, ignoring his problems and feelings through four to five regenerations. Finally, with the 14th, he was able to leave that guilt behind. He is healing and moving on. He is no longer the lonely mad god he once was after the Time War. He is no longer the 'Time Lord Victorious'; he is just the Doctor again, the man who stole a TARDIS from Gallifrey to adventure across the stars although still shaped but not defined by his past. His crying is a sign of his healing. Forced to see idiots ignorantly heading towards their doom, thinking they are their pioneer ancestors, would evoke rage and sorrow in anyone. Have you never gotten mad at someone's stupid actions because you knew better? That helpless rage in the back of your mind, where you can only yell and watch their stupidity lead them to their doom, is what he is experiencing
Agreed. As a woman, I don't like super emotional men. I like emotionally aware men with their priorities right. Like, if a man lost his child and cried, I wouldn't judge one bit. And in fiction, when a male protagonist goes through hell and sheds a private tear at rock bottom, I find that very powerful. A true women enjoys supporting the man she loves when he's feeling low. It taps into that nurturing instinct. When women say they like emotional men, they are probably confusedly trying to say that they like strong men who lean on them in times of trouble or show vulnerability occasionally.
@@newhandlewhodis Most people, men in particular, don't cry in public. Most people put their emotions on hold while they get done what they need to do. Then they go cry in private later. If a person feels the need to cry in public due to a recent trauma (it happens to the best of us), they usually find an excuse to leave so they can be in a private place. It's just human nature to avoid crying in public because it is a state of vulnerability and to some, shame.
This IS the period where there were still indentured black kids available to rent for parties and some households would invite “former” (escaped, basically) slaves to stay if anyone was foolish enough to bring one to the isles. I assume there’s a bunch of background conversations along the lines of “this is the most excitement since that time you rented a pineapple, Agatha!”
@@thelaughingrouge Yeah, it is just the classic Disney marketing stunt of "first 'insert whatever here' ever" thing that they did with some of their live action remakes.
Ncuti Gatwa isn’t a natural born actor , he shouldn’t have been hired in the first place. He’s an actor who just plays pretend and saw all of one doctor who episode and plays the role horribly
II'm pretty sure that he wasn't the best actor at the audition. He just happened to be the only one who ticked all the right boxes on the job application. I am also convinced that RTD is desperate to get into Fruity Gateway's pants. I can't believe he was selected on acting ability - he has none.
Remember when Dr.Who was about escaping reality and being entertained with Sci-fi, Danger, Space , Time Travel, Aliens and the Dr was a character who dismissed human emotions, referred to them as a weakness, but had a fondness for their fragility and so protected them, Nurse Watts here is as far removed from the show as he can possibly get, and I swear Russel T Davies really hates himself, he has set out to wreck the show and has succeeded I cannot see the BBC ever putting another £ into the show ever again
It's "dont say anything bad about it, it promotes tolerance". Marketing went from "that's why you should see it" to "that's why you shouldn't leave a bad comment about it". This is a result of social media craze. Perception became more important than the merit.
Also since we can see that in EVERY show right now, so it's not even special or anything. its just normal Hollywood. men kissing, yeah, it doesn't matter which channel I turn too, it will indeed have kissing men. You're not special.
I watched 'broke back mountain' years ago with a girlfriend. Even though it was a powerful movie, well done, I never felt the need to watch it again. The subjectmatter isn't of interest to me. There's plenty of stuff out there that's closer to my interests.
It does come off as pretty pathetic, especially since there was a whole gay relationship in the Who spinoff Torchwood 15 freaking years ago. Like, "We have literally nothing else good to say about the show, so let's make up something that'll sound good to the sjws that have never watched Who."
So Ruby is stuck in a trap where a push could get her out... Too bad the Doctor didn't have any device who could have pushed her, maybe some kind of sonic device? He could just have chucked a chair on her too, made a lasso or a bunch of other things, just how stupid is the 14th Doctor?
To be honest, questions like "where the hell are you from" and "why are you here" are the most appropriate questions about this wannabe Doctor, period.
Not only does the faux Doctor change his costume every episode, but he even grows out his hair to fit different eras attire. In the 60s he suddenly grew a short afro from a close buzzcut hairdo he usually has, and for this he spontaneously grew an afro quaff and a pigtail.
It's so entertaining they try so hard with the message, they make the white guy the dude whose willing to take action and sacrifice himself to protect others. Making that dude the hero of the story and the black dude just, kind of a idiot and a coward.
Who immediately discards the relationship when it'd be inconvenient, betraying his 'love' utterly. Is this really what RTD and his writers think is normal for his 'community'? 🤣
They did something similar in the recent "Murder Is Easy," where the black Nigerian who was lusting after white Galadriel (Rings of Power reference). At the end, he goes back to Nigeria to rebuild his country, and she, the budding world traveler, doesn't say, "If I show up in Nigeria, you'll show me around, won't you, nudge-nudge wink-wink say no more?" Nor does he.
I knew this was going to be a bad episode.. but fuck me, this was the worst bit of TELEVISION I have ever seen. It makes Jodie look like Tom Baker in comparison. My god. Absolutely pathetic. They need to cut their losses, and regenerate this excuse for an actor back into Matt Smith and have him repair the timeline to purge it of this SHITE.
@@user-gj9uq3kb7y Oh completely agreed - he just had absolutely awful scripts to work with. He could have been as iconic as the original greats, like Pertwee or Hartnell if not for the ridiculous way his version was written. Sonic Shades... FFS.
Re Gatwa always crying (and it's amazing that we're on ep 6 and he still doesn't do it well)- I saw an interview where RTD explained that it's because those from Gen Z are much more open about their feelings, and so he thought a crying Doctor would make them identify with him more. Sooo... A. Why do his emotions have to be expressed by crying, specifically? And in almost every freakin' episode? B. The *Companion* is there for the audience to identify with, not the Doctor. C. RTD keeps talking like he expects to write for a horde of new Gen Z viewers who will make up most of the audience. Where are they then?
I don't think he understands by what we mean by Gen Z being more open about their feelings, is that while it is a bit true that we do open up a tad more but that doesn't mean that even Gen Z men just cry in the open. I am part of Gen Z and a man and none of my friends during my entire time at school ever really displayed tears unless they would be in pain after getting in a fight. At most they might eventually open up to a friend or something about being upset or angry or whatever but strangers not happening. Most of Gen Z that I know were fairly emotional stable and don't break down in tears or open up that easily unless we're talking extreme circumstances like a death or something which is a fair enough. I do believe we are a little more open with our feelings than say my fathers or grandfathers generation as even if either of them were in an awful amount of pain, they won't say anything which is rather frustrating whereas as Gen Z would.
@@geneangrypenguin5876 His reference point was tiktok videos. No, really, in that interview he says that. He thought it was a way to encourage openness & good mental health practices. He seems to have _genuinely_ confused performative tiktok crying with healthy emotional expression.
You know, a scene of Doctor Who crying might be a powerful moment - if he didn't do all the dang time! It would stand out more and give the audience a 'oh shit' moment when the Doctor cries if it's done very sparingly. Instead, you can spill a glass of milk and this Doctor Who will start bursting into tears.
And if those tears were earned by good storytelling and character development. I think the only time we saw 10 cry during his run with Rose was when his hologram faded from the parallel universe just before he was to tell Rose he loved her. And 11 cried when he lost Amy and Rory to the Weeping Angel. But before that the audience was able to make an emotional connection with the Doctor and his companions over the course of multiple episodes and story arcs. In these stories, we are able to grow with and follow the character which leads up to those emotional moments. Gatwa nor RTD have earned those moments. Maybe Ruby/Millie has, and I think she's the only one with watching at this point.
So a person can be added to the trap after it's sprung and you can replace a person with another? So why not remove Ruby when he put the other one in the trap?
Doctor who has always been a leftist show objectively. The only reason you see it as woke is because they shifted in the opposite direction and became centrist-liberal in ideology. I have no problem with the 15th Doctor he's a great actor doing what he can with the 8 episode season he was written into. I feel the casting was bad because of him being busy making us getting some Doctor light episodes. Corporate rushing this out doomed this season, 13 episodes is a must when it comes to shows just look at hazbin hotel and other modern shows that go down the 8 episode path. 8 episodes is not enough for a season especially for a show like Doctor who
@@newhandlewhodis When the activist messaging is more prominent, more visible then any episodes actual plot it's woke. Good actors act, woke actors are identifiable from their cult of personality presentation. RTD is ramming his message down viewers throats. Intentional ignorance isn't a virtue to signal.
"Cottaging of the time lord" is an episode from the next dismalney series. The chocolate ponce goes to Caligula's Rome and is repeatedly raped by 13 disabled pakistani Romans. Then he cries...a great deal
LOOOOOOOOL! The Man Gatwa falls in love with for this fanfic non-Dr. Who episode bonded/falls in love with him, sacrifices himself to save his companion, TELLS HIM TO FIND HIM and just goes: "Nah, where to next?" WTF!? I understand the concept of the "long way around" (love it, when done correctly like older Dr. Who), but that was COMPLETE abandonment lol. HOLY $HIT! Poor dude WTF LOL! Trapped in some alternate universe he doesn't know with owl aliens that are 100% going to kill him THINKING the Doctor is trying to save him, only for the Doctor to piss off back to fxcking around lol. WOOOOOOOW!
This is a total victory. They went about on a mission to utterly destroy a cultural icon, in the name of ideology, and they have succeeded to an amazing degree.
And to think there was a time when I was wondering if somehow we could pretend Peter Capaldi's season 10 wasn't really part of the Dr. Who universe... Turns out that was the last time this show resembled Dr. Who before morphing to a gay caricature of itself.
My father was a drug addict. When I was a baby, my parents separated because my deadbeat father had become a junkie, taking on heroin. This left my mother to raise me on her own. when I was in my late twenties, I had found out at some point he had quit, however had contracted HIV from sharing needles- which ended up killing him. My mother warned me from a young age to never do drugs, and to promise to be a better man then my father was. Now, at the age of 37, I can say without any doubt that I have never even considered to try drugs, including heroin. I am a little regretful of this however, as although I never touched a dirty needle, Russel T Davies and Ncuti Gatwa gave me aids anyways.
Hold on... The Doctor thinking Bounty hunters are cool... the guy who hates any form of harming people (Even in this awfully written series we have him trying to save a literal monster that was going to eat babies). Isn't he also the one who is always presented as being very anti-weapons because their only purpose is killing and making war? Who the fuck is this character and where have you taken The Doctor... oh that's right the real one is pissing away his life in a back garden somewhere, refusing to help anyone anymore despite that being the only thing the Doctor has ever cared about.
The episode takes place in 1813. Britain was already at war with the USA. War of 1812 (1812-1815). So, why would the aliens want to go start another was, when they already have one. I should get paid for actually doing more than the cast and crew.
Britain was at war with France as well. This was near the end of the Napoleonic Wars, and when we weren't fighting the French outright (due to troops being otherwise engaged) we were giving financial aid to the campaigns of her enemies.
@@Atanalcar 1813, Britain was in it. I'm somewhat knowledgeable of English history. (American) So, the writers couldn't do the basic research to find out what was going in 1813 England. Thanks for history. I'll look into that. 👍
Why would the writers need to? The rotten tomato critics will give it oer 90% just for Gatwa being the doctor and for the message. They don't need to make a good show, be accurate or make it for the audience. So they clearly don't. That is what happens when "critics" don't have any integrity. It's like we are watching communism unfold. The critics say it's good because it is.
Personally, one of the most egregious things this show has done is to make time travel boring. Remember in the early days when they were hanging on for dear life, random fires starting and generally going through a bit of a rough time to travel across time and space? then the reveal that it can actually be really smooth, but you need 6 pilots, emphasising the drs loneliness and the fact that he has lost his entire race and is now on his own? Not for the new doctor i guess, he seems to tell everyone, whether they care or not, about gallifrey, that he is a timelord, the last one no less, that he is in possession of a tardis, the most powerful thing in creation (potentially) none of this has any weight in the story anymore and its genuinely sad to see that aspect alone has been so disrespected and retconned.
yeah i think boney was locked up in 13, as waterloo was 14...im too lazy to look it up...and the war of 1812 was an embarrassment to the usa...got ass reamed

@@DH-xw6jp oh god... it reminded me of something There was a Polish comedy film, where in distant future only women remained trying to survive in a vault, while two male protagonists after being woken up from cryo storage were trying to avoid forced trans therapy. In one scene as they were trying to defend their malehood in front of court they learn that all important historical figures were gender swapped (which led to great gag "Maria Sklodowska Curie also was a woman?" John Barrowman's Captain Jack Harkness kissed Christopher Eccelson's 9th Doctor in the series years and years ago. So not only was this not the first same-sex kiss, it wasn't even the first time "The Doctor" was involved.
That was nearly 20 years ago now. Crazy. And guess what, that kiss didn’t make me want to gag. Why is it that gay kisses now always trigger my gag reflex?
@@StarWarsomania cause it was life or death and it ment something deeper then pleasure seeking. nowdays its portrayed as of hedonism and love are one in the same.
1) that was a goodbye kiss. Jack knew he would never see them again because the Daleks would massacre them all. 2) Jack kissed the 9th Doctor, but 9th didn’t exactly kiss him back. He was always portrayed as asexual. It was also meant to highlight Jack’s sexuality, not the Doctor’s. 3) this is probably the most important…the Doctor has NEVER pounced at someone out of pure horniness. So yea, this scene was shit. This kiss doesn’t play into the plot or the character development…it was there to push an agenda. Nothing more.
Of course the BBC doesn’t care about racial and historical accuracy. This is the same studio that had a black Guinevere and black Elyan in their Merlin show.
