This is my Tier list review of the entirety of the Steven Moffat Era of Doctor Who. The Era ran from 2010 - 2017. I break down every episode from 'The Eleventh Hour' up to 'Twice Upon a Time'.
Thanks for watching please feel free to like and Subscribe!
Production on Moffat's time in charge of Doctor Who began in July 2009.As executive producer and lead writer, he was significantly involved in casting both Matt Smith as the Eleventh Doctor and Peter Capaldi as the Twelfth Doctor. As Doctor Who showrunner, Moffat won another Hugo Award for Best Dramatic Presentation, Short Form for writing the two-part story "The Pandorica Opens" and "The Big Bang" (both 2010).
MORE ABOUT DOCTOR WHO:
Doctor Who is a British science fiction television programme produced by the BBC since November 23rd, 1963. The programme depicts the adventures of a Time Lord called "The Doctor", an extraterrestrial being, appearing to be human. The Doctor explores the universe in a time-travelling space ship called the TARDIS. Its exterior appears as a blue British metropolitan police box, which was a common sight in Britain in the 1960’s when the series first aired. Accompanied by a number of companions, the Doctor combats a variety of foes like the Daleks and Cybermen while working to save civilisations and save people in need.
Beginning with William Hartnell, over fifteen actors have headlined the series as the Doctor. The transition from one actor to another is written into the plot of the show with the concept of regeneration into a new incarnation and body, a plot device in which a Timelord "transforms" into a new body when the current one is too badly harmed to heal normally.
Ncuti Gatwa had previously been announced as Jodie Whittaker's successor after David Tennant reprises his role as the doctor in the 60th anniversary specials as the programme's lead, and many reports stated he would play the Fourteenth Doctor and that Whittaker's Thirteenth Doctor would regenerate into an incarnation portrayed by Gatwa. Upon Jodie Whittaker's final appearance as the character in The Power Of The Doctor, she instead regenerated into a form similar to the Tenth Doctor. This character, portrayed by Tennant, was confirmed to be the Fourteenth Doctor, with later clarification that Ncuti Gatwa would actually portray the Fifteenth Doctor. Ncuti Gatwa’s 15th doctor has also had his companion announced as Millie Gibson playing Ruby Sunday live on Children In Need.
On 24 September 2021, the BBC announced Russell T Davies would return to Doctor Who as showrunner, after having previously acted as showrunner from 2005-2010 for the Ninth and Tenth Doctors. He will succeed Chibnall for the show's 60th anniversary in 2023 and beyond. Davies will be joined by the Bad Wolf production company, which was founded by former Doctor Who executive producer Julie Gardner and former BBC head of drama Jane Tranter. In October 2021, it was announced that Sony would acquire a majority of Bad Wolf. Bad Wolf also took over creative control of Doctor Who beginning with the specials, allowing the BBC to focus on establishing Doctor Who as a global brand. The new era of Doctor Who is being labelled as RTD2 as it is Russel’s second era of Doctor Who.

My biggest issue with this list is the Doctor Falls, it has, in my opinion, the best dynamic between the Doctor, companions, and the master. The hopelessness of the episode and the doctor’s willingness sacrifice himself for so little really demonstrates what the Doctor should be. I love Bill changing from the cyber man to her human form and the horror of it all really hit me, so it makes it my favorite episode of the Moffat era, and DW in general.

The Moffat era standout episodes for me are: The Eleventh Hour Amy’s Choice Vincent and the Doctor The Pandorica Opens/The Big Bang A Christmas Carol The Impossible Astronaut/Day of the Moon The Doctor’s Wife A Good Man Goes to War The Angels Take Manhattan The Day of the Doctor The Time of the Doctor Deep Breath Listen The Magician’s Apprentice/The Witch’s Familiar The Girl Who Died Heaven Sent/Hell Bent The Husbands of River Song Thin Ice Extremis World Enough and Time/The Doctor Falls Twice Upon a Time I honestly don’t get the hate that this era gets. It’s the most visually impressive era yet with the best direction, and it’s the richest the show has ever been thematically. Moffat also dedicates all of his finales to intimate character pieces over the technobabble nonsense of series 1-4, which was a welcome change of pace.

I agree with your view. The fact you listed more than probably half of his stories either written by him or directed. I don't know what your views ont the last few years have been but I adore the Capaldi run and Smith too. I can never see a likelihood of another Vincent and the Doctor ever occuring again as they seem intent on tuning the Doctor into a superhero with mannerisms never ever shown by him over 60 years. Cheers.

Can we please STOP saying that Doctor Who is a "children's show"? I get that it was originally geared towards children but at this point any children who watched the original show are pensioners and those who started watching the revived series are having children of their own.
@tortoiseoflegends4466
@tortoiseoflegends4466 12 дней назад
Because it is a show for kids. Doesn't mean adults can't enjoy it. Movies like Beauty And The Beast or Spirited Away are also for kids. The real issue is adults thinking that because they enjoyed something made for kids, it shouldn't be considered "for kids" anymore.
@HOTD108_
@HOTD108_ 11 дней назад
Both RTD and Moffat, plus literally EVERY single leading actor to play the Doctor has said MULTIPLE times that Doctor Who is a children's show. Even David Tennant and Peter Capaldi, two people who are famously lifelong fans of the show even well into their respective adulthoods, say it's a children's show. The people who MAKE the show have told us in plain English that the target audience is children, so it quite literally is MADE FOR KIDS. Get tf over it and just accept that you like a show made explicitly for kids. That's what the rest of us do. You'll be much happier the sooner you accept this.

Just to be pedantic and American for a second, while Django Unchained is a western in terms of genre conventions and aesthetics, it is not set in the wild west, but in the deep south. The question of whether or not slavery should be allowed to expand into the west was one of the main political impasses which led to the American Civil War three years after when Django Unchained takes place.

Series 8 takes its time. I would argue the doctor didn’t finish his post regeneration identity crisis until the end of Series 9. There are a lot of mirrors/reflections in Series 8. From before the first episode, we are seeing the Doctor observing his own reflection from Clara’s eyes. He has to look for how she sees him, to figure out who he is. As he knows Clara is his reflection. Yes it’s slow, yes there are a lot of talking. But isn’t that the whole point of getting Peter Capaldi?

My favorite doctors are Peter Capaldi and David Tennant. The writing definitely more consistent during David Tennant’s time, without a doubt. However, the fact that Peter Capaldi can make me love his era simply because of his work alone is what makes him top tier. The fact that the best episode was Heaven sent where he acted alone just shows what a diamond Peter was and that maybe he didn’t need a companion (or at least not Clara) .

@@josephhedderman9897 Clara does nothing but overshadow the character who is SUPPOSED to be The Doctor, talks down to him like he’s a misbehaving 5 year old and acts like she is Queen of the World and everyone should listen to her bc of how amazing she thinks she is. That era also had some absolutely horrible storylines. Like Kill The Moon, the one with the trees, the worst ever Dalek story, the Vikings two-parter, and the awful Hell Bent. As good as Heaven Sent is, it doesn’t make up for the rest of it. There are even Chris Chibnall episodes that aren’t as bad as some of those.

thank you for being so grounded about moffat's misogyny! i like how you do point it out, instead of of just totally ignoring it. it feels sometimes like reviewers will just Not Say Anything if they don't want the entire point of the video/review to be about his misogyny, which is a shame. the reality is that his era is very complicated with a lot going on, which includes his misogyny but isn't limited to it. i used to despise his entire era, but in more recent years i've been able to do a better job of separating that aspect of his writing from the rest of his work as showrunner, as well as other writers and directors during his tenure. at least the next showrunner had a more nuanced and meaningful understanding of female charactoh fuck. god dammit. never mind

Solid video, some really funny observations, and I can't imagine how much time you put into editing this. As for actual tier list, yeah there's a fair bit I disagree with. I can't deny I'm a huge stan for Capaldi, so I'd put half of series 8 one or two places higher than you did. Yeah there's the odd bad episode, but Capaldi & Coleman I think have such good chemistry that they're always great to watch. Series 10 too has some great acting, but I will admit it's probably weaker overall. If there's one episode I think had the most missed potential, it's Knock. David Suchet is a legend, and the idea of a creepy manor house with the wood as a threat is excellent, but the execution botches it. I do completely agree with your views on Mark Gatiss, crazy how much he got to write/act in considering he's pretty bad. Anyway onto the Chibbers era, may God have mercy on your soul. My fondest memory of it is probably Zellin the evil God who intercepts dreams. Everything else... well.

In The Rings of Akhaten it only seems that the Doctor is the greatest and being in the middle, when actually it shows that however great he might be and however immense his memory could be, a simple symbol of the loss of a loved one (the leaf) contains so much more missed opportunities, that dwarf all his genius. I could relate to that as a son and as a father as well.

This pretty much lines up though. There's a lot of people denying that this was ever the case (people I assume were kids during the Moffat years and are now young adults), but Series 6 was the clear point in which New Who lost it's way for most people. Series 5 - well liked by pretty much everyone at the time. Series 6? Eh, not great. People were dropping off a bit. Series 7? Well which Series 7? 7a? That was horrible. Nobody paid attention. 7b? Oh no wait nobody paid attention to that either. Sure the 50th was big but Series 8 just as quickly lost everyone again and 9 did nothing to bring it back. I honestly don't recall any general chatter about Series 10 whilst it was on, at all. From anyone, in any part of my life, in any capacity. It's subjective to think something is good or bad, there's no but there. That being said, the Moffat years had 1 series that was super well received and then far too many years of at best mixed reactions, at best. Dunk on the Chibs era all you want, imo that's real "crime" was being bland and of a generally 'on in the background' quality. Sure it didn't reach the highs of Moff's era, but it sure as hell didn't reach it's lows. And no I don't think the Timeless Child is anywhere near as terrible as the worst of Moff's (to the people who hate that it retcons everything about the Doctor, so did Series 1 in 2005 and whilst yes that's actually written well and well produced, you get my point).

been waiting for this, love it, both entertaining and thoughtful. I think you hit the nail on the head in terms of assessment of positives and negatives of Moffat's writing and especially the part about sexy women not being the same as strong or well written women...some of his writing of women was very yikes esp earlier, I do think he did get better in that regard. I have capaldi era higher although I agree that there was some duds and it did generally seem the show was on the decline at that point I remember i stopped watching around series 7. I prefer the characterisation of capaldi's doctor to smiths and the dynamic between him and companions...written completely differently with none of the yikesy sexual stuff, I presume in large part because of the age difference between smith and capaldi. I do love river although its true her character got progressively more one note I think alex kingston did an amazing job in providing some depth despite that.

For some reason, I both simultaneously hated and loved Steven Moffat's era of Doctor Who. It definitely had to do with the highs since I would rewatch the "good" episodes from this specific era whenever I wanted to watch something comforting. I distinctly remember series 7 being such a slog to go through in comparison to the previous seasons, and it all went downhill from there. But nevertheless, maybe it is just nostalgia since I started watching Doctor Who during the Capaldi era, but this era of Doctor Who is still my favorite (excluding Classic Who). Though, that has a lot to do with Matt Smith's performance as the Doctor, as well as Peter Capaldi's; and Amy and Rory being my favorite companions from the revival series. This video really did show how the series started to fall off the longer it went on, and I agreed with most of the evaluations of these episodes.

Not to be that guy but the reason the doctors regeneration was disabled was because Matt smiths doctor was the last incarnation before he got more regeneration from the time lords in time of the doctor since time lords at the time can only have 12 incarnations before dying

VINDICATED AGAIN! Empress of Mars and Eaters of Light were such black holes for me. I thought it was my ADHD brain not doing enough to pay attention but even my last watch didn't help. I stopped blaming myself, tried making a post for other people who might like them to gush over it, help me see the good in it, didn't quite work. A couple of other Who reviewers had similar sentiment and to shed that guilt just felt so great. But for the record the insufferableness of Clara is the point. Detached and unhinged after Danny's death, leading to that downfall.

Watching this I definitely see why I was so scattered with watching this show in the era. Capaldi as the doctor is still my favourite, just because I love capaldi in the role. But man there are some steaming turds in this era. So much so that I didn’t even watch the seasons after. So on that note I can’t wait to catch up on what happens next in your next video 😂😂

I'm genuinely surprised at how negatively you found some of the Capaldi episodes. I know opinions differ, but at some point it was a bit silly like "Forest = bad budget" and "Talking is so boring!" I dunno, just feels like the negativity was overblown.

River doesn’t shoot the astronaut because she knows it’s her younger self and obviously doesn’t want to kill herself but still needs to pretend to shoot so Amy and Rory don’t question anything

Moffat is a good writer as long as its just a few episodes per season like during 10s era but as soon as he has to actually write characters and human interaction it's all just a bit shit

(also even in 10's era he did have a clear formula, which is fine, but imo got a tiny bit predictable)

At no point in any of the previous incarnations of the doctor does it ever seem like he forgets the rules of engagement with humans. No matter how many times his face changed, he still had social graces, he still knew there are certain things you shouldn't say. It was 11's IMPOSSIBLE level of awkwardness in series 5 that really turned me off the show
