Jenna Coleman's time on Doctor who spanned half a decade, but Clara Oswald's didn't, that is at least the same Clara. These are the shocking reasons why and more specifically how....
Clara was never officially a nanny in the Bells of St John it’s revealed she originally planned to go travelling but while staying with the Maitland family the mother passed away so she stays to temporarily look after the kids until the dad can find proper help, This is her original motivation to travel with the doctor as he makes it possible for her to both travel and look after the kids. We also see a graduation photo of her in The Rings of Akhaten and in a series 7 extra Steven Moffat says she has an English degree. So it’s not random her becoming a teacher, it actually fits nicely with her character established in s7 - being good with kids. There’s also a photo of the Maitland kids in Clara’s flat in Time of the Doctor.

During the planning of the 50th anniversary, Moffat was in a lot of trouble. Initially, he hadn't thought of the War Doctor, and his role in the 50th would have been played by the 9th Doctor, but Christopher Eccleston refused to return. To add to the chaos, Matt Smith's contract was coming to an end, and the actor wasn't sure if he wanted to stay (Moffat had initially planned to keep Smith on for series 8, but they eventually agreed to just two more specials, the 50th and Christmas). The only one whose contract wasn't due to expire soon was Jenna Coleman, and Moffat had sketched out the idea of doing the 50th special with her, using old footage of the Doctors. Additionally, from what we know, Jenna was only supposed to stay until the end of series 8, so Moffat's initial idea was to have both the 11th and Clara until the 8th, and start series 9 with a new Doctor and new companions. Having said all that, I believe that the idea that Jenna Coleman played two different Claras is actually very sensible. In the finale of series 7, we see the 11th and Clara enter the Doctor's time stream, and we never see them come out. Clara says that she shatters into millions of versions of herself, who live on as echoes to save the Doctor. My hypothesis is that she never came out of there, and the one we follow from the 50th onwards is an echo, another Clara. This would have been revealed only at the end of series 8. However, it's likely that this idea was scrapped, given that Smith decided to leave the show earlier and Jenna decided to stay for series 9. However, Moffat had already written the characterization of this new Clara, and he adapted it, removing the part where she is an echo.

And yes I do feel there is a lot of credibility with the Clara after stepping into the Doctors time stream being a different Clara. It would make sense her being another version of the echos of herself from Series 8 onwards like you said. I genuinely have always felt she is just so different between series 7 and 8, literally like two different character's!
Such an interesting conspiracy. I always thought it was so strange that she had a different job in the 50th and a family we’ve never seen before in Time of the Doctor. I do wish this is something they addressed or paid off with 12. She accused him of changing too much, but she had become a totally different character by the beginning of Series 8

The changes in her character from series 7 vs 8 is due to a deliberate time jump by Steven Moffat between the 2013 specials in order to make her character feel more “alien” and “doctor like” compared to other humans for her series 8 storyline.
The time the 12th Doctor told his fangirl Petronella Osgood his name "Basil", Clara got substituted by the Zygon Bonny (lipstick & ponytail instead of natural & open). This might bring you to the conclusion that Clara got swapped several times in her run with the Doctor - "The Name Of The Doctor" showed us the creation of multiple Claras, strewn all along the Doctor's timeline - the "original" type A got contaminated by the computer-skills patch up in "The Bells Of St. John" - she cold do anything after this upgrade of her knowledge (even forge the necessary paperwork to be considered a qualified teacher) - the sacred leaf, that tells the story of her parents love, got destoyed several times in the show (and looked seldom the same in the times it appeared on screen) - so there are several timelines (parallel universes) the Doctor travels without noticing it himself - where he picks up "his" respective Clara. Because there are so many versions of her around, she is not able to function as the achor to the specific timeline, the Doctor is just exploring. What happened to her later in her "frozen moment of existence" is even worse - with her own time-machine she makes all the splinter-Claras redundant [it could always have been that girl without breath or heartbeat - playing dead - everytime she had an important encounter with the Doctor]

Also I never thought about the splinter-Clara being redundant due to the fact Hell Bent Clara got her own TARDIS and could travel anywhere. That means therefore, she could have popped up anywhere in the Doctor's timeline without the need of the Splinter -Claras. What a great extension to the theory, thank you once again!
I thought the same as you without speculating about reasons for why I thought so, unlike you. So at least for now, I'm very happy with your explanations and the comment Departures1 left.
Everyone can have theories and opinions and I'm down for them but this one can be explained simply. The clothes styles change a lot because she goes from casual nanny to teacher and being with the Doctor more, Clara learns to adapt to dressing for their adventures more practical. Also the change in her personality is simply just script writing and direction. Her hair being shorter is just a case of how long a gap was between filming for season 8, if you watch 'Flatline' Capaldis hair goes long to short nearly every scene in the Tarsid due to reshoots. The hair is probably just a case of Jenna didn't grow it back in time so they improvised. It happens a lot in DW filming. As I said the character change and random different things in Clara's life is just down to plotting and strands that go nowhere because Moffat had no clue if Jenna was staying past s8 and she kept changing her mind last minute. It's a decent enough concept but can be debunked by logic and behind the scenes. Fair play for making it tho! But theres no chilling differences or coincidences or abandoned plots. The only change was the direction of the scripts and last minute changes. If you dig deep you know that S8 was wrote half for Matt Smith before he left so obviously theres gonna be weird moments. Plus the Hybrid theory was to do with this too.

I do feel Clara changed a lot in such a small amount of time but like you said a lot of things are just to do with last minute changes and natural character development!

Hi thanks for commenting! 💙 I'm taking about Clara from Name of The Doctor onwards not the Clara's seen in The Snowmen or Asylum Of The Daleks. Rather that Clara Oswald (not Oswin) from series 7 and the Clara from Series 8+9 are different people!
An alternative is that Clara B is one of the time splinters like Oswin Oswald, and Clara A went back to her regular life... and thus is probably still alive on Earth.
If she was a qualified teacher why was she a live in nanny with the two kids? After she went into the Drs timestream on Trenzalore it must have changed timelines as you suggest

I think thus conspiracy is definitely a stretch, entertaining though. Clara was a nanny but ALSO a teacher. That isn't unheard of especially since a teacher (or former teacher) would make a great nanny. When it comes to why Clara didn't have the kids with her or mentions them, why would she? They aren't her kids! Come on! I like the idea of Clara being a double bc I liked her in the beginning, but hated her by the time she died. I actually cheered when she died! I have heard there was talk of trying to work the character back into the story somehow so maybe you're right after all.
