Audio book with Tom Baker reading is what elevates this to greatness. Having the Doctor tell this story to me really took me back. Also, lovely tribute to Ian Marter and Elisabeth Sladen

I had a blast with this. Tom Baker really knows this character, when I read the way he describes things and his thoughts I said to myself "yep, this is how I imagine the Doctor would think." The story is so imaginative, scary and hilarious sometimes all at once.

Good review, sir. I've got the "Scratchman" audiobook on my Audible wish list. Should be an interesting listen, especially as it's Tom doing the narration.

My favourite fourth Doctor novel is Managra, I remember getting it out of the library and didn't really know what to expect but it was amazing. It couldn't easily be done on television but I would say a must read for a fourth Doctor fan.

Good Doctor Who novels to review: Prisoner of the Daleks- Tenth Doctor's best Dalek story, The Good Doctor- possibly the best 13th Doctor story, if you weren't keen on her this might help, Plague City, Only Human.

James Goss was the co writer I think.

LOL there, just look inside the cover to see the name James Goss, the man behind 'Doctor Who and the Krikikett men', a great tribute to Douglas Adams. Yes, there's a lot of his work in this book as well. But I like to think there was considerable oversight by Tom Baker. It's written in the first person format, so I had to read it three times before forming an opinion. Is it a great story? Possibly not the best Dr Who story I've read. Is it worth adding to your collection? YES! There are things in the book as the fourth Doctor, Harry and Sarah embark on another wild adventure that excite and stimulate your mind. Even a few 'Easter eggs' for the die hard fans. I bought it on release, and was glad I did.

One of my favourite Doctor Who novels is Campaign by Jim Mortimore. It's honestly one of the best written original doctor who novels out there, and if you haven't read it yet, seriously give it a read. To say that it's fantastic would be an understatement.

I've said it before Wingy, we need a complation video of your Tom Baker impressions. Been waiting to read this book, although I've got quite a stack to get through as is. The audiobook is read by Tom Himself, so I might check that out. Solid review as always.

As a villain Scratchman was *phenomenal* -- the stakes he brings to the story as a villain really make it, especially *for* Baker. Baker never faced anything like him and that's what made him great. Now a lot of the audios did things with being from other world/universes encroaching on our own but none went as balls to the wall with it as this book did. There were points where I had to just *stop* and take a break because I was seeing things so vividly. He could never be re-used, but like, at the same time I wonder what a Doctor like Troughton's would have made of him or even McCoy, who fancied himself just as much of a planner/Machiavellian trickster. But what it comes down to is that Baker's Doctor was *the* Doctor to do this story with.

As a fan of the Cybermen, I can reccomend you _David Banks' CYBERMEN, Iceberg, Killing Ground_ and especially _Illegal Alien,_ a BBC books novelisation of a planned story for what ended up being McCoy's last season. All of the three novels feature Cybermen, their lore and concept, heavily and explore them in ways that the show effectively cannot in regards to conversion, menace and characterisation. David Banks' CYBERMEN is an odd and entertaining fact book about the Cybermen that features the real-world backstory of their creation, the original planned Genesis story and, most importantly, a theorised evolution of every breed of Cyberman that existed at the time....up until Attack of the Cybermen....you'd need to buy the ArcHive Tapes for that Silver Nemesis . PS and, if you aren't averse to an "ascended fanon" fact book like David Banks' CYBERMEN and are interested in regeneration and its many functions, perhaps also try _The Gallifrey Chronicles by John Peel,_ *not to be confused with The Gallifrey Chronicles by Lance Parkin.*

I would absolutely love it if you started doing videos on the Virgin Adventures/BBC books adventures, not enough people do. I've been attempting to collect them all in chronological order (starting with the Third Doctor, since I still haven't seen all of the first two yet) since last Christmas, and I only just got around to starting to read them. I've only read the adventure The Eye of the Giant by Christopher Bulis, which was a good, fun classic story, but not much more, but I hope to read the next one (The Scales of Injustice by Gary Russell) as soon as I've finished the book I'm currently reading.

I loved scratchman it was a great read the only problem is that if big finish were to adapt it who would play as Sarah Jane and Harry as it would be hard to replace Elisabeth Sladen and Ian Marter

I'm not sure how much of it was James Goss and how much was Tom. I think its probably 60% Tom, 40% Goss.

@WingyMedia 5 лет назад
Didn't mind it tbh, I don't like the 13th Doctor however I know in my mind if this came out in the last few years and the then current doctor appeared, I'd be ok with it so I'm ok with her appearing. I hate the line where they say they have lots of each other in them though.. I get what they're trying to say but Tom is nothing like Jodie and she's not even close to being like him
@frazzlesreviews5379
@frazzlesreviews5379 5 лет назад
Wingy Media I agree but I do think that Jodie would have been a much better doctor if they made a more verging on the edge of insanity eccentric like baker rather than the Matt smith rip off we ended up with.
@mayotango1317
@mayotango1317 5 лет назад
@@frazzlesreviews5379 Please, Matt Smith had subtle passive-aggressive character, his speeches and the Time's Champion since the seventh Doctor. Jodie Whittaker is just Barbie.
@frazzlesreviews5379
@frazzlesreviews5379 5 лет назад
Mayo Tango131 I know Matt smith was near perfect. I just mean she took the part of his performance that was getting excited over small things like in the god complex where he is talked about the windows. Chibnall and Whittaker ripped this off just without any of the interesting times champion stuff

I'll keep it short. First half, great and you could see it fitting in with the episodes. Second half, batshit crazy and I eventually lost interest as it was a bit too messed up. 4:55 Oh my god, you said it too! See, I thought it was batshit crazy bad. It just wasn't Doctor Who for me. I think Tom Baker just lost it in the second half. You can see why Tom chose the devil being an ex-monk. But I'm glad some people out there liked it.

I was so excited....but then the the CRAMMING in of 13th / "female" Doctor bollocks at the end, complete rubbish (and I'm a woman); other than that, it was pretty good. The co-writer's name is on the actual book that was in your hand...James Goss, it's not on the cover, the first page "with James Goss" Tom's written "The Boy who's Kicked Pigs, " it's pretty dark also....

Jennifer Flynn . I have read all the 13th Doctor books so far and yet weirdly the cameo in this book is my favourite depiction of her.
@ballyea1
@ballyea1 5 лет назад
@@jamesroach1049 I'm just so anti-female "Doctor' character, I couldn't even read a story. I'm 'old"(nearly 50) a WOMAN and have been watching Doctor Who since 1977/78 - there were so many great female characters already, not just companions, but The Rani, Romana etc. They just rammed this SJW shite in, well, they can keep it. I own / watch all Classic Who & Nu Who up to season 9 - Bill was shite & the stories they gave to poor Peter were rubbish; that said, I'll probably revisit series 10 at some point, albeit NOT the Christmas special (if i were related to William Hartnell, I would sue Moffatt!) and that's it. I managed to endure 3 episodes of 13 and I couldn't stomach it + Whittaker's attitude to fans having difficulties with a female Doctor were abhorrent. #RIPDoctorWho ok, rant over.
