I really had wanted Donna back after the "Runaway Bride" However... when Donna put her hands on the plunger to share the burden (so the Doctor didn't have to take the full blame alone)… that's when she became one of my all time favorite companions.

Donna was right in the end. Yeah they had to die but u can still do something, even if its saving a single life. When the Doctor saved the family that's when he realized even when u can't save everyone u can still save someone. Emotions

"We're in Pompeii, and it's volcano day!" Nobody ever catches it in reactions, but this is a reference to something Jack said in his first episode, when he's talking about being a con artist. He says that he once conned someone in Pompeii, but that he had to look out for "volcano day" while there.

Actually, it was one of the first ones I showed my husband. It took him a couple of days, but out of the blue, he cottoned on to the significance of how Donna handled the situation. She wasn't just on the sidelines cheering the Doctor on. She asked the right questions and once she got the answers she needed and realized the choice to be made, she shared the burden right along with him. She fully realized they couldn't save everybody, but could save someone. She proved herself as a worthy companion!

Anyone else notice the little call back to The Doctor Dances? Jack was talking about using Pompeii as a location for self cleaning operations, "...but you can't forget tot set your alarm for volcano day." Also, a sense of deja vu for the Doctor. It's not the first time he's sentences a population to burn. Finally, augur(Lucius' title) is an old fashioned, very old fashioned, word for someone with precognitive abilities.

I’ve been to Pompeii, mt Vesuvius literally looks like two different mountains today! That’s how devastating the volcanic eruption was, the mountain split into two and that much ash and earth rained down on Pompeii! My history teacher actually told us that you used to be able to go into the homes and sites to explore, but people were so shitty and selfish that they kept stealing stuff and carving their names into walls that you can no longer have that freedom. You have to explore the streets and you can’t go into the homes

This is over a year ago, but I still have to add in this comment: in a canonical audio drama episode, the Seventh Doctor also was in Pompeii, meaning this is a weird instance where the Doctor was in this city, twice, doing completely different adventures.

This episode reminds me of a debate, if you could go back in time to 9/11 would you try and stop it. The obvious first thought is yes, of course! But the deeper you dig in you start to think of firstly, no one is going to believe you and miss their flight, people are not going to leave their job and risk getting fired, people might start believing after the first plane hits but then officials will interrogate you, detain you, and even if it stopped everything after the first plane, everyone on the planes are still going to die. If you somehow stop the entire attack, and get the hijackers arrested or questioned because you know every plane involved and every hijacker name and they put an armed air marshal on all the planes, then the TSA would not have as tight security (I mean I wouldn't mind that personally) There would not be laws and regulations that, despite infringing on our privacy, do actually stop potential attacks. Finally, of course, because of all this lax security a year or two down the line there could be another attack, and instead of 2600 people dying (mostly from the planes' capacity) They might crash into stadiums full of people during the super bowl, schools with thousands of students, Universities, Military bases, Times square at new years... your involvement could result in ten times the casualties because of the results of preventing such an attack.

"Volcano", is derived from the name of one of their pantheon of deities. "Vulcan"! He is said to have his forge in various mountains. But to the Greeks he was known as: "Hephaestus was the god of fire, metalworking, stone masonry, forges and the art of sculpture. He was the son of Zeus and Hera and married to Aphrodite by Zeus to prevent a war of the gods fighting for her hand. He was a smithing god, making all of the weapons for Olympus and acting as a blacksmith for the gods."
