"Every parent knows that". In moment like this you realize that he was a father and a grandfather (as the ninth doctor says in "The Empty Child"). Also the first doctor travelled with his granddaughter so... My heart breaks every time

This was the episode where I fell in love with Amy's character. She was so sharp and perceptive to just pick up on everything she already knew to put together what no one else could. It's further confirmation of what the Davies era was trying to get across about the Doctor - he needs someone to stop him, the nature of humans makes them easier to spot things that even Time Lords couldn't and he wants someone with Amy's personality to remind him why he keeps travelling to show people the universe. Eleventh Hour was Matt's debut, but this was definitely Karen's.

This episode isn’t amazing but *definitely* underrated.

One thing I love is how they make The Doctor to be a not-so-perfect being who sometimes gets it wrong, and it's actually his companions that end up saving the day.

Always loved how 11 had a bit of an angry streak early on in his regeneration. Matt Smith played him so well.

My favourite episode, such a beautifully tragic plot. Great way to establish them both and relate it to Amy and the Doctor. (The star whale and eleven can't watch children cry and not help.) Still get teary thinking about how the star whale must have felt all those years. The speeches and acting were insane. (Karen gillan went to one of the best performing arts schools in the world.)

I had a similar reaction on first viewing but This episode has really grown on me over the years. Great reaction as always 😊👏

"Help me Obi-Wan, you're my only hope." "Help us Doctor, you're our only hope." Also, this episode reminds me of a short story I read back in high school. A thriving city with happy citizens and a flourishing economy. The city is a regular paradise, a utopia; there's just one catch. In order for this paradise to continue, one child is kept in a dark hole, below everyone else. This child is abused, beaten mercilessly every day, forced to crawl around in his own waste, with only soiled rags to wear. He will never be loved or treated with any true dignity, instead cruelly tortured for what would be the rest of his sad life. When children come of age, they're told of this child's existence and given a choice: accept that this child's suffering is necessary and live in this otherwise beautiful society on the condition you never speak of or try to help this poor creature -- or, find moral outrage in his mistreatment and object, whereas you would be forced to leave, banned from ever returning to this conditional paradise.

I think it’s funny when reactors are surprised by the second crack. But, he clearly said the cracks were everywhere. Prisoner Zero seemed to think so too. I thought I understood that from the beginning. But, maybe I was surprised too. Can’t remember now, not sure how many times I’ve rewatched the series now. Just seems like stating there are cracks, plural, in the skin of the universe, you may expect to see another one.

I think of Matt Smith as the Rumplestilskin Doctor. All his finger movements and his bow leg walk and a bit of darkness. The “wherever you like” line when he’s inviting Amy onto the TARDIS. And how he delivers the lines about “just me now” in this episode. “DOCTOR: No, you look Time Lord. We came first. AMY: So there are other Time Lords, yeah? DOCTOR: No. There were, but there aren't. Just me now.”

Love this one, Liz 10 gave me life, the Smilers freaked me out and yes the adventures of 11 and Pond(s) off we go! I adore it! my fave era (i say it everytime but its true) Moff is a legend .. bring it on love these reactions so much!!

I fully believe that The Doctor has not fixed the chameleon circuit because The Doctor is the universe's policeman. And subconsciously, The Doctor knows it - and doesn't bother to even try.

Moffat's cold opens are phenomenal

Think about why the Doctor is so angry. Because he made the same choice himself-to destroy a few to save everyone-during the Time War, when he destroyed Gallifrey. His anger at the humans is ultimately an expression of his own guilt and self-loathing over destroying Gallifrey.

I think this episode is great for showing the tenth doctor inside Matt Smith

This episode is linked to several of the Classic Era episodes which also dealt with humanity's reaction to Earth being scorched by solar flares. Ark in Space is the most well known.

This episode always makes me cry because of the whale of course but more than that because it is a very very true critism of humanity..

Wasn't fond of this episode initially, partly because I wasn't fond of 11 or Amy yet. I appreciate the episode more each time I rewatch it though. Also the music for series 5 is my favorite.

First adventure, and Amy managed to out-Doctor the Doctor to save the day

This isn't a favourite episode (perhaps because of the animal torture and the smilers) but it has Liz 10 in it and her line "I'm the bloody Queen" is a classic. Looking at the upcoming episodes I'm reminded how packed this series is. It's only getting better.

An episode, with a WHALE *Wink Wink*

On first viewing, years ago...the beginning made me think that it was going to be a more exciting episode than it turned out to be, for me. The end redeemed an episode I wasn't feeling through the middle - a long middle, honestly. I don't hate the episode. 11 is my favorite Doctor and Amy/Amelia is one of my favorite companions.

Notice how when that winder reported the sighting of the Doctor he clarified it's a man. Moffat has been very subtly building up to allowing the Doctor to be a woman for a long time. This is the second time he hinted at it. The first was right out of the regeneration where Matt thought he might be a girl, because of his longer hair. The next nudge comes in episode 6.04, but I don't know if it's Moffat who added it, or the episode writer Neil Gaiman.
