Remember that River is traveling in time the opposite direction. 11’s “first kiss” does mark River’s last as she said to Rory earlier a day was coming when the Doctor would not know who she was (the library). Her face after the kiss when she realized it surprised him was her understanding that they would never kiss again (in her timeline).

Ok… the salute. The palm down salute originated in the British navy by the able seamen so as not to show a dirty palm caused by the pitch & rigging dirt from ship work to an officer. Rory gives the army salute of palm to face the recipient with the thumb down which was denoting respect of rank and no weapon in hand dates from the Middle Ages 🫡

My absolute favorite opening two parter! That prison scene is the best showcase of how the Doctor and River's timeline works. If you approach viewing from "the more one knows, the less the other knows" take, then it makes the episodes make more sense. It gets a little weird later, but for the most part, it tracks. Other notes: the Hail to the Chief needle drops live rent free in my head. And don't make any assumptions plot wise, cuz this season is WILD.

I’m British and this double episode is one of my faves. Matt Smith’s era was the time that Doctor Who became more popular in the US. Hence the repeating intro that no one likes 😊 and the American based episodes. I think most people in the UK didn’t have a problem with that. I didn’t anyway. This era of the show is up there for me as one of the best.

I personally don't feel that the Doctor made humans murderers. Those aliens invaded and conquered Earth without our knowledge. They killed humans with impunity. Also, a human made that recording, and an alien made that suggestion. "To kill" was on the alien's mind, the Doctor suggested surrender. Besides, "should" means you have an option ("you SHOULD kill us on sight"), and personally I prefer that option than to run away and forget that I'm this thing's slave. He didn't make us killers, he gave us a way to be free. 🖖

yea, i see a lot of people claiming that 9 & 10 would never do something like this. meanwhile 10 literally comitted genocide on the racnoss and drowned all their children while watching. what 11 did was very much in line with the doctor's character, he will always protect humanity first and if he absolutely MUST kill, he will. i suppose it just comes across a bit colder when 11 does it as he's usually outwardly happier than 9 & 10

I can't wait. I WISH I could get my brother to really give the show a chance but he hated 2 episodes he watched with a friend during Eccleston's year as the Doctor. My brother loves Stargate, loves Star trek TNG, and a billion other shows. I've tried to argue it with him. He'll, his own son has recommended the show to him. But what do we all know since we watch new stuff. 😂

When Gold's been great, he was great. But the more recent music he's done for the show has been completely forgettable. Akinola's music was very ordinary earlier on, but he did come up with some nice moments over time. (Not being more specific to avoid spoilers.)

Disagree I always disliked Murry's bombastic orchestral stuff for doctor who, Also the fixation of character themes and stuff too, liked Akinola's synth stuff as I think it was more in the spirit of the classic show, I think what they should have done is got a few different composer's in so episodes would have more different feels.

@@TONES44 I really liked Akinola's arrangement of the theme music, both on its own merits and in combination with the visuals. Gold's arrangements mostly seemed to get messier with each version... Some of Gold's pieces from the show are real personal favourites, even though it becomes weird when you rewatch some episodes and hear the music used in the "wrong" context due to recycling.

It's a bold way to start a series, with a two parter that lays a lot of cards on the table for the audience to keep track of, including a lot of foreshadowing. For some people it worked, for others it left them very confused and disinterested. On rewatches i've come to appreciate the craftsmanship.

What I love about Doctor Who is that it takes normal things and explains them with an alien context. So it takes that break in Neil Armstrong‘s message and explains that there’s an alien message in it and that’s why the message broke. Brilliant!

I don't remember Matt Smith not being loved as the Doctor in the UK from fish custard (the 11th hour) onwards. From what I remember he was hugely popular right from the off. This is one of the best opening stories in NuWho as far as I'm concerned (I'm English). It's still a completely British show, even though some bits of this story are filmed in the US (beautifully), the vast majority of the episode is still filmed in the UK (and in fact some of the scenes are filmed in locations previously used in other episodes).

The Doctor can't seem to stay away from Area 51. Eccleston's Doctor recognised a piece of the Roswell spaceship in 'Dalek' and Tennant voiced the Tenth Doctor in an animated Area 51 story called Dreamland (which seems to be canon, since the villains from that story show up as live action characters in The Sarah Jane Adventures). Oh yeah, and there's also a novel featuring the 7th Doctor and the Master.

The intro is temporary and the reason was because the American “view count” on WHO was exploding after it had been steadily growing for seasons 1-5. Much like Ncuti Gatwa’s entrance Matt Smith was a stepping on point for new viewers whose friends were begging them to watch but who couldn’t be talked into starting with Eccleston and Rose. BBC was trying to manage its 50 year old Doctor becoming THE new thing. This is also part of why they came and did some American location filming.

Yeah, I had a small prob with the "kill all of us on sight" thing, but remember, he didn't say that, he just replayed for the people what the Silent said. And they have ships, they can leave. This is an incentive to make the Romans leave Rome! They are warned, and they can stick around and find out if they want to, but I think they leave, quick/fast/in a mo fo hurry. Some get snuffed on the way out the door, sure, but thankfully nobody will ever remember killing Silents. I'm prepared to give it a pass.

To be fair, the Doctor has caused mass casualties before. And I think the Silence suggestion was the best option to liberate an enslaved human race that doesn't even know they've been enslaved. It's allowing the human race to finally fight back in a war they don't even know exists & have been losing for a long time. Remember, as in the first episode, the Silence are taking lives on their own as well. As for the scars from taking lives, would they actually happen when the person would forget the whole thing once they looked away? Just don't think about all of the corpses, though...

The 'recap of Series 5' intro was only on the BBC America version of the broadcast if I remember right, because Series 6 was when the Beeb made a big push for Doctor Who over in the States and they didn't want new viewers left in the dark about the premise. It certainly wasn't on the UK one

I don't think it became more American. I think it's just that because of the greater popularity in the US (and elsewhere) they got more money to spend (and it shows) and were allowed to actually film in the US. I don't think anyone in England thought it was too American. I'm English and I LOVE these episodes.

You guys really like making up your own fan fictions, don't you. I don't think anyone hated these episodes, but the running joke is "All of time and space, and he keeps ending up in the UK." This episode just addressed that. Matt Smith wan't controversial at all. Most people really loved him. In fact most still do. Not everyone cares about blowing up in the US. Check out John Farnham from Australia. Now THAT is someone who could have gone international, but he chose family over fame.

I started watching New Who, with Chris, when season 7 was already running. Unfortunately, I had the secret of who the kid is spoiled to me by a meme I stumbled on. So, I went in knowing exactly what was going on. Which really bummed me out. I am excited to watch these guys watch this without any spoilers and love seeing them trying to figure it out. This season is going to be so much fun!

35:23 That, honestly, is a bad take/read on the situation, for 2 reasons. 1, as the Doctor explained, this is an occupation, not an invasion. Without actively fighting back, the Silence will never go away. SOMEONE has to force the Silence away, and all it would take is one Silence hiding away until the forces are gone to start the whole process over again. It's why the Doctor even told Nixon to record everything in the office (something Nixon did in real life), just so that if the Silence tried to sway him, the Doctor would be able to figure it out quick. Someone has to be fighting force, and as it's humanity that is currently occupied, they need to be the ones to fight. 2. 11 is following the 10th's rule: You get one chance. That's why Canton asked the injured Silence what they should do if the roles were reversed. And the Silence's response? Kill them all on sight. And honestly, it's the only option. Any other suggestion would give the Silence a chance to change the suggestion to anything else. A Kill on Sight at least gives humanity the chance for free will, outside that one command. And by placing the suggestion in a video that 90% of humanity will see/hear for the rest of humanity, pretty much gives most humans a fighting chance. 39:43 That's why that comment is irrelevant. The Silence could force that same child to kill, and they still wouldn't have any choice. At least, this way we know that morally, they're in the clear, versus what the Silence could command. (Could command a child to push a human down the stairs, we'd see it as an accident, when it was ordered.)

Murray Gold definitely did get the credit he deserved. There were several special, televised Proms concerts at the Royal Albert Hall, devoted to his music for Doctor Who and played by the Royal Symphonic Orchestra. The cast of the show always took part in the proceedings and it was always a very theatrical event. Just because the little girl can regenerate doesn’t necessarily make her the daughter of the doctor it just means that she’s at least part time lord. Remember, Amy said she was concerned about traveling in the tardis and how it might affect her pregnancy so that is a little foreshadowing.

I never get tired of seeing the reaction to the final moments of this one. Things are about to get nuts. We didn't get the intro bit in the UK, so I don't remember there being much discussion over here about the show becoming 'american-ised'. It being set in the US, and shot on location was just seen as a positive thing about how the show was gaining popularity over the pond. As for all the stuff around how the Silence were defeated is an interesting one. Not sure what other options there were though - like he said, humanity was basically at war, even if we didn't know it. And using the enemy's weapons against them (in this case, the hypnotic suggestion) is a very common Doctor solution. I imagine most of the Silence got out of dodge pretty quickly once they realised that the writing was on the wall. There's an interesting follow-up story there, really. Other than 'The Lodger'. Which I'm pretty convinced is one - the Silence who owned that particular time engine got offed and the engine started malfunctioning. I also think they used one of the time engines to blow up the Tardis in the S5 finale. A malfunctioning one almost destroyed the Tardis in The Lodger, so it's not much of a stretch.

@occheermommy It's never outright confirmed in the show how they did it, but it's definitely The Silence who cause it. Other main theories I've seen is that there's an unseen Silence on the Tardis who does it. Or that River, who is piloting it at the time it explodes does it subconsciously because of all the messing with her head, the Silence did.

This series is really a mixed bag. You have the big scale action-y episodes like this, and some really good smaller scale episodes with interesting sci-fi ideas.
