Stam Fine Reviews returns to the world of Doctor Who to stick their oar into the 2007 series. Series 3 saw The Doctor (David Tennant) team up with medical student Martha Jones (Freema Agyeman) on a great series of adventures, mostly. The Daleks return, natch, but this year, another of the Doctor's oldest foes returns. And there's Blink.

The thing that I love about Jack's appearance in Utopia is that it's canonically right where series 1 of Torchwood leaves off. So if you think about how THAT ends, Jack's only just recovered from having his entire soul sucked out by the giant demon Abbadon and taking DAYS to come back to life rather than a few seconds. He's just reconciled with the entire team, forgiven Owen for deciding to open the Rift in the first place...and he just buggers off when he hears the TARDIS at the end of the episode and endures even more trauma!

What made "Blink" so great with the concept is that even the AUDIENCE never sees the Angels move, which brings their quantum lock into the audience's reality. Even if WE are looking at them, they can't move. And that's why every subsequent Angel episode ruined them.

Thanks for making another very entertaining as well as informative review and the Aunty Beryl joke. (Is it Auntie or Aunty?) I continue to be impressed by your knowledge of British popular culture (particularly the 1970s & 80s). I spotted "Blue Peter", "Doctor Who Magazine" and the "Television Licence Fee" in this review. That's why I was so impressed by the references to Mr Bronson in "Grange Hill" that you used to make. In your last reply we discussed one of the five times he played Adolf Hitler. He also played Heinrich Himmler three times. As I suspect that you are well aware, he frequently appeared in British sci-fi TV series and the ones that I know of are: - One of the five times he played Adolf Hitler was in "The Tomorrow People". - He played was a particularly nasty Federation Trooper in "Blake's 7". - He was one of the four people that were eaten alive and then had their steaming carcasses spat out by the creature in the "Space: 1999!" episode "Dragon's Domain". - I hope all of the above series are on your "to do" list. - He made several appearances in Dr Who. I don't remember you name checking him when you reviewed them, but I'm prepared to be proved wrong. - Finally, he was Admiral Ozzel in "The Empire Strikes Back". Once again, well done, keep it up!

I totally turned a friend on to DW by showing him Blink. DW had a bad rep from the 80s. I figured my friend would respond to a Doctor-lite ep and he did. Once he saw how good the writing can be, he got into the show. But not the classic show. As a Who fan, you can only hope for so much.

FYI for who nerds - "Human Nature/Family of Blood" was a story that originally appeared as one of the Doctor Who Adventure novels that continued the 7th Doctor Adventure after the classic series stopped & until the new series started. A lot of the writers of these novels became writers for new Who, including Paul Cornell, who re-wrote his novel for the TV. The original novel version of this story was 7th Doctor & Bernice Summerfield (the next companion after Ace). .. and yeah, a lot of this series guest cast had a early acting appearance in these episodes & went very quickly onto very successful & prolific careers.

16:54 Actually, the Chameleon Arch was first introduced in the 1996 movie, the Master used it to try and steal the Doctor's regenerations. Plus, it was implied in one of the books that the whole "half human" concept the Doctor talked about in the movie was because the Doctor used a malfunctioning Chameleon Arch to turn him half human, so no, the Chameleon Arch wasn't in created in this episode. Another thing to point out is that the fob watch isn't the Chameleon Arch, it's a Time Lord fob watch that is compatible with the Chameleon Arch. The Arch itself is the metal Crown of Thorns the Doctor puts in himself before turning human.

Doctor Who Series 3 is my favourite. 2007 was the perfect time. The 3 perfect stories, "Family of Blood", "Blink" and "Utopia", is a showrunner and writer, RTD, on a roll. Each one showcases Doctor Who's magic. "Last of the Timelords" is an argument for MORE episodes. IMAGINE The BBC give the budget of Doctor Who an increase to enable 3 episodes to be added onto the series'. The purpose? Showing Martha's fight to survive as she travels the world spreading the word of the Doctor. Meanwhile, it would show us struggle of Jack and the Doctor to regain control from the Master. The overall idea would be to explore and expand on the events on the carrier and Earth. Hell, Martha's year could've been an entire mini series. I always loved Martha because she was someone you'd want to travel with. Rose seemed almost obsessed with the Doctor. She was meant to be a strong empowered woman yet here she is acting like she's overly dependant on him. Martha's exit is similar to Tegan in the sense she's her own person. A great series showing how brilliant Doctor Who can be when you utilize the concepts with care and passion. Thank you Stan Fine for a Allonsy! video, David

Well so many comments here are the polar opposite of my feelings about this series. It's the one that almost made me give up on new Who (that honour would later go to series 10), there are so many lower than par stories (DIM, TSC and of course the last 2 eps) and Martha starts off well enough but proves to be weak as dishwater. (Not Freema's fault, she's just not used or written well.) She really only comes into her own in Stolen Earth/Journey's End. A deeply forgettable series

You know... while I think the "Human Nature" two-parter is a very good story, it's always bugged me that this feels like it's supposed to be a reflection or a comparison on who the Doctor could be if he was a normal human but it kind of fails at that if you watch it by itself -- it doesn't really show enough of The Doctor as The Doctor for the ideas to really sink in unless you're watching it back-to-back with the rest of the season. But even then it still ends up being something of a problem since the two episodes immediately before it aren't nearly as strong, and the very next story still doesn't have much of The Doctor in it. So it winds up feeling to me like a very strong story that's unfortunately made weaker by the structure it's forced into and the way it ultimately has to be told. It's always a little bit frustrating to me when I see a good story done dirty by something that's outside of it. I'll admit I haven't read the novel that it was based on but my gut feeling at least is that the story might not have to compromise as much in that medium.

My problem with New Who is that they nearly always go big with the last episode of the season and it usually falls flat. Doctor Who doesn’t work as a big budget sci-fi. It’s always better as a Sherlock Holmes in space, where the cleaver ideas outshine any big action set piece. The Last of the Timelords is such cringe, with both Gollum Doctor and Jesus Doctor. It had such a great cast and basic premise, but spoiled it all by going overboard.

RTD gave us a new era of the show in 2005 (and arguably the best new Who Doctor), although I dread to think what his 2023 return will bring. @@Tolstoy111 Because 2023 BBC isn't the same as it was in 2005. They have a diversity policy in place that means the show won't go back to its family friendly roots, and Chibnall completely smashed the shows origin with his "small child tortured by scientist to discover regeneration" BS. @@Tolstoy111 I'm talking about the show as it was when I grew up, I remember my family watching Tom Baker on a Saturday night.
