Kinda sad they cut out Ian's "a dislike for the unlike" scene. Always loved that quote/part.

It goes along with the decisions to cut the rough & tumble machine and the dancing from Macra Terror - there is a weird strain of fan that misses how vital these moments to the overall theme and meaning of the stories. They are myopically focused on plot plot plot!

Once the characters are out of the Dalek City, it becomes like an endless recap that just doesn't stop and it all just becomes monotonous - I felt like I was having a panic attack watching it! I just don't think the story coped well with being cut down so tightly!

Do you know what guys I only watched this on a few days ago,& as ya’s know I’m in Ireland 🇮🇪 & no VPN will work on iPlayer thankfully a friend sent it to me a few days ago and I really enjoyed it, the only thing i felt didn’t sit too well was the score it was great & I love Mark Ayres music but I would have preferred a little less music like the original. Hopefully they do some more I’d love 2 see The War Games or The Chase undergoing the colouring process 🙂🙂🙂

It felt like they cut the early parts of the story quite sensitively, but then they suddenly realised they still had 2 hours worth to squeeze into 50 minutes and just panicked. It descends into a mess. The additional music is the worst; it just does not suit the imagery at all.

I think there's a sterile bleakness to the Dalek city, even in behind the scenes colour images, that gets lost by adding so many splashes of random colour. I do think that more could have been left grey and silver.

I absolutely loved the colourised city model, it looked amazing. Like something out of a 60s movie.

But when you watch classic anything you have to view it within the time period it was created. I’m in my twenties and I disliked most people in my film studies class saying I hate black and white films why?

As a child of the 1950s and 60s watching The Daleks and The Dalek Invasion of Earth as a nine and ten year old, for me they are classics, having said that I was looking forward to the colorizing. I can live with the Barbara Wright’s bright pink jumper, or the blue floor, but overall the colorization worked for me. As Matthew said, it’s a tight story and it was meant to be viewed over seven episodes, the main issue I have with this version are the elements cut which means some of the story has been lost even though the original dragged a bit for today’s audience, so I agree with you both that it should have been longer. As someone who watched the Hartnell version first on TV, for me I detested the Peter Cushing versions when I went to the cinema because they weren’t canon. Therefore, even though they were in colour and much slicker, as a child I was so disappointed with Dr. Who and the Daleks I didn’t see the Daleks' Invasion Earth 2150 AD until years later watching it with my son. I have the DVDs in my collection, but that’s about it, whereas The Daleks and The Dalek Invasion of Earth with William Hartnell are the DVDs, I would choose to watch again. Therefore, as Billy says, it’s the colorization, which sells this version and like both of you I loved the colourization of the city. For me personally, I’d have kept the original music rather than jazzing it up but then that's nostalgia, I guess. Having said that maybe I’d have accepted the heavy metal as a fan of rock music. If they did a spinoff of the first Doctor with David Bradley, maybe they could jazz it up with Black Sabbath, Jimi Hendrix Band of Gypsy’s electric blues, why not. On balance, I’m not sure whether to buy the DVD for my collection or not. I guess I will, but if I’m honest I’d have preferred they had colourized the whole thing, but then this is because I’m an old guy who would have liked the original, but in colour.

The Tomb of the Cybermen has a pretty low resolution print unfortunately, which can lead to smeary colors. But I think that the mostly monochrome palette, with washes of color coming in from the control panels and that hypnotic thingy, will minimize the effect and end up looking quite nice.
@MostIngenious
@MostIngenious 8 месяцев назад
I think the reason The War Games is next up is because it has such a clean, sharp print which will take to colourization much hetter than a softer print like The Daleks (same with Seeds of Death and Enemy of the World). Also, i believe its rhe highest rated Troughton per DWM polls. Still, I hope they allot more than 75 minutes to it!

Bit late to this as I've only just gotten around to watching this on the DVD copy (which I assume is exactly the same as the iPlayer release?) Main verdict from both me and my mum was that it was a fun watch but it was a bit hard to follow the plot at times because they skipped over long scenes of explaining things (For example the explanation for splitting up and getting into the city via two different routes) And, from a personal point of view I think it's a shame they cut out the Billy fluffs. I know that sort of thing wouldn't be left in a TV show nowadays but I think it's kinda endearing and amusing seeing Hartnell stumble over his lines occasionally. "I believe they may have been anti-radiation gloves- *drugs!* " Also, screw you for pointing out the "unarmed" Dalek on the cover, Billy. I hadn't spotted that and now I can't unsee it! 😆

I have some mixed feelings about this, but I look forward to seeing it. It's a very neat idea and does open the orignal up to new audiences. They got 350K people watching Hartnell Who, so that's a result! I did always liked the original version, though it's true it bogs down in the later segments. But the Cushing film seemed like candy coated fluff to me whereas the original was a tense and spooky thriller. And I ADORE black & white. Ask me about film noir sometime 😂

I will also say I loved the new opening theme tune! A wonderful period appropriate remix, including elements of the TARDIS takeoff as well I believe. Great stuff and a worthy successor. Wish they'd done a closing one!

I liked the colourisation but the edit and music were not good. I would not want to see this done to Tomb of the Cybermen or The War Games. I think 90 minutes would have been better.

This definitely isn’t for me. I’m against changing the genuine original programs. But as long as we can always access the real ones, I’m all for a new coat of paint if that will get younger viewers to dip their toes in and check out the classic series .

Honestly, and I know there are some slow bits, I'd take the pacing of the original over this new version any day. Perhaps its just because I'm so use to the original, but this new version felt super choppy, and had the feeling of filling out a checklist. It started off okay, but it gets to a point when there's no breathing room at all.

The "not-we" I've asked said they've seen "The Daleks in colour" when they were kids - meaning the Peter Cushing film!! Oops! My view is I think it was well done but a bit over edited and not sure all those flashbacks worked. Prob needed an extra 10 mins running time - which isn't something you'd normally say about 60s WHO!

I was kind of horrified when I watched this. I think we need to stop meddling with the past, just accept that some stories are 7 episodes long, and get on with enjoying the episodes that we enjoy. I wish they had put the money into re-animating The Massacre, or something.

I mean it’s actually a very effective of getting new fans into Classic Who which for me is a win, and yeah the editing is kinda choppy but I’ve always thought the original story was too long anyway And it feels great we’re living in the time where we can colourise old episodes since the cast and crew working on the original series did wish it was in colour from the start

My dream has always been they'd put an absolute fortune into animating The Massacre I'm the style of Richard Williams' version of A Christmas Carol or The Man Who Planted Trees. It will absolutely never happen, but I'd cry tears of joy if such a thing did exist.

Not to disparage anyone's efforts, but I feel the taste level was not to the expected standard both in terms of color palette and music. Barbara's jumper is the worst offender (she does not have a gay best friend and apparently neither do the colorists!). Wish Clayton Hickman had been the color supervisor - his work is always spot on and period appropriate.
