Also you can tell that clara had developed into a really emotionally strong person by this point.. the fact that she doesn't completely break down in front of him would've taken a lot control over one's emotions
And she almost loses it at 4:00, but manages to stop herself. Before, clara would have an emotional break down quite often, but by this point she's grown so much as a character, yet is still just as soft-hearted as she always was.. she really did become her own version of the doctor :,)
@@michaelm5542 now that I think about it that's the majority yeah but I have seen some people say she had no character development and was just "inconsistent"
Moffat as a showrunner was dubious, but when he had a solid idea for a moment, goddamn. The notion of not knowing whether the Doctor or Clara lost their memory is played out so well. And Capaldi and Coleman play it like a fiddle.
Moffat’s problem was that he went too big too soon during Matt Smith’s era. I think even he admitted it somewhere in an interview. Davies was a lot better at balancing human stories with sci-fi, in my opinion (with a welcome dash of camp). Having said that, Moffat’s ideas are absolutely stellar when fully realised (Blink and Heaven Sent are some of the best examples in some ways).
yeah, it really sold the misdirection that the doctor wiped her memory. but as the story was told we get to know that it was the other way around and the same subtle expression that misdirected became painful to watch because we learned that Clara is hiding the pain and frightening ignorance.
@@corndoghead1 Actually the first misdirection is in the beginning that this Clara is one of the echos (out of of the many Claras that are out there)... because OG Clara had perished in Face The Raven, and Doctor was supposed to be on Gallifery. Then as the episodes proceeds, we learn that Clara was saved (rather literally taken 'out of time') by the Doctor but she probably died at some point again, and this in fact is still another Clara. Then we slowly learn that OG Clara probably lost her memories and landed here, and then the final twist being that it was the Doctor who lost his memories of Clara and this INFACT is our Clara.
That moment near the end, right as she's about to close the door to her tardis, it's like she trying to drink in the sight of him for as long as she can, cause she knows this is the last time she's ever gonna see this face. Man, those two really had a love to be reckoned with
For me 11th was definitely for the Ponds while 12th was for Clara. While the companionship with 11th and Clara was fun, 12th really was the bestfriend Clara had.
And it didn't start that way. At first Clara didn't accept the 12th Doctor. Do you remember the phone call that Clara got from the the 11th Doctor? She would finally accept the 12th and their friendship would be a great one. That's what is so amazing about this show just as the companion accepts the new doctor reluctantly so does the viewer.
I love this episode, one of my favourite finales. It's full of heart. This is the first time I've really watched this scene from Clara's point of view. The longer she's talking to him she realises he really doesn't remember her. After all the places they've been together & all the things they done together, and the Doctor doesn't even know who she is. That would have destroyed Clara inside. Also the fact that he mentioned he remembered he was there with Amy & Rory at one point at 3:57 you can see that hurt her, knowing he remembered them but not her.
she was actually hurt because the doctor told her he'd definitely remember who Clara was if he ever saw her again (not knowing he was talking to Clara the whole time)
Mann second time around I did the same exact thing you did, but definitely felt like she was breaking down more about the "I'd recognize her if I saw her" comment while staring her in the face. I didn't even notice "the ponds" comment till my 2nd time rewatching.
To me, these two were the best together. I loved Tennant and Piper but Capaldi and Coleman had that same beautiful connection and it was just... magical
@HOTD108_ lol what you mean, those guys had to kill themselves to make a paradox then inevitably die anyways and write the Doctor a book for the future to let him know they were okay? Don't get me wrong though there were definitely companies who may have had it equally as bad or worse, I think Bill came to mine first before Clara, though.
3:52 "And the day is coming when I'll look into that man's eyes, my Doctor, and he won't have the faintest idea who I am. And I think it's going to kill me."
It completes the tragedy that started in "Face the Raven". Watching Jenna's reactions as Peter delivers his lines of loss, and finally turning away to keep it together. Every sad song is about something that ended, and maybe shouldn't have. But the Impossible Girl leaves him a final message, to carry on, to run, you clever boy, and be a Doctor. And the broken Doctor does in a scene where nothing is said, just Peter's acting and Murray Gold's music. And the memories do, eventually, return.
I like that after he remembered he also realized that that one nice girl in the diner was her saying hello. It wasn't just a random conversation it was Clara saying goodbye to him. Would have been cool if we got to see him play Clara's theme every now and then just to show us that he thinks about her.
@@nicolesong6199 I never did and probley never will I still can't watch Face The Raven and it kills me every time I watch hell bent 12 and Clara will forever be my doctor who Duo
Screw the haters, this episode rules. The final scene in the diner is one of the most bittersweet and effective goodbyes in the entire show for me. Rose’s was just sad. Donna’s was sad. Amy and Rory’s was sad. Bill’s and Nardole’s has a sort of similar vibe, but was more emphasized by the regeneration than anything else. This one is sad, with a little bit of optimism. “You said memories become stories when they’re forgotten. Maybe some of them become songs.” I’m going to CRY, that’s such a good and well-executed line. If the story of this episode was a standalone film or a novel or something, it may just be my favorite one. As an episode of Doctor Who, it has its flaws, especially given the context of Clara’s death and whatnot. But despite that, the episode HITS.
@@pandalover4045 the episode came out more than 4 years ago... prolly don't watch yt clips before finishing the show... 1. They influence your opinions on stories, characters and writers and 2. Spoilers.
So, Hell Bent is one massive missed opportunity in terms of Gallifrey's use and the Hybrid's revelation, but I can't deny that it's also a beautiful story that really understands how powerful the friendship between the Doctor and Clara is...
But that's the point. It's not supposed to matter. Clara had become everything to him. His planet, his people, his everything meant less than her. Even the universe and time itself seemed but a stone in an ocean when compared to her.
@@masonharris9166 I understand your point on a character level (which is all that matters to me really) but I can't deny that I was hoping for more stakes, more tension and payoff after the 10 year wait for the return to Gallifrey...
@@NotAHero98 I understand that but like mason said I think it's perfectly fine because it didn't matter to the doctor either. You'd think the doctor would be overjoyed that Gallifrey was still alive considering how excited he was at the potential of it being alive in the 50th but in that exact moment none of that mattered to him. The only thing that mattered, the only thing that he could focus on, was that Clara was dead and that's why the stakes were that they were too. He was willing to rip a whole in the universe just because he didn't want to accept that his best friend was dead and there was nothing he could do about it.
'don't stop me now' is playing in the background the one that they were there for on the orient express - two times of reference to the orient express episode! why? it's the romantic one and this is a romantic story
I really hope that Clara figured out that the Doctor did regain his memories of her. If this is the last time she sees him, then to her it’s like he remembers most of their adventures but has forgotten what she looked and sounded like, but right before he regenerates he remembers everything. Hopefully, she saw.
@@emotionalsupportostrich2480 It wasn't really Clara, but a recreation of her through her memories (though there was admittedly a discussion about whether or not the crystal-looking thing can effectively become the real thing or just imitate people thanks to having all their life experiences). From the Doctor's perspective, she was Clara for all intents or purposes, but AFAWK, there is no indication that the Original Clara learned that fact before going to face the raven one final time.
I remember when we used to criticise episodes written by Moffat 😳... Every episode and series written by him always, without fail, had some incredibly genius idea or story behind them, even when they looked or sounded bad. Certainly Chibnall shows us that it is by far the former that is the most important which he replaced with ideas from certain Little Red P.C. books.
The last of the reboot that really is magic - bookends .... Rose and the Autons : Clara and the diner .... heartbreakingly the end of an era .... but WHAT AN 11 YEARS, eh .... 🙂 Jenna - you were so brilliant as the Doctor's companion ..... I loved watching ever moment, you really were a joy in this role ..... Oswin ??? Yes she did .... xxxxxx 💖💖
As much is I don’t like hell bent, I can at least appreciate that moffat put so much effort into it all. He really tried and the scenes look and are written beautifully. I’m not a fan of the overall plot but I still like parts of the episode
@@mel-burnes Each to their own, I guess. I love the whole ark of Face the Raven-Heaven Sent-Hell bent. What Steven Moffat did was so beautifully and deeply tragic. My heart shatters in a million ways every time I sit down to watch these three episodes. You might not have liked it but I, many others, love the hell out of it.
I'm learning to play the guitar just to be able to play this song. Well so far, I can play the notes, but still need some training to play it at the right speed and tempo.
I will say the Ep had a really good twist, the whole time makes u think the doctor is visiting Clara who's forgotten who he is and then bang it's the reverse.
You left me hanging without that last chord! Gaaaah! Anyway, I have now seen all of your clips, and you have another subscriber. Keep up the good work!
Imagine how hard it must have been for the doctor to not go looking for her after he remembered her. I think he knew that if he ever met her again he wouldn't be strong enough to let go.
I think he did know her, and that's why he played the song. He knows they're nothing but trouble together, "one of us has to go..." so he doesn't make any attempt to have a reunion, but he knows it's her. He turned his back quite deliberately to let her leave by the Tardis in the kitchen.
Totally agree, Peter and Jenna were phenomenal together. You watch this high standard of acting then watch the current Who actors, there is no comparison.
Jenna Coleman aka "Clara Oswald"... She´s so damn hot... We´re gonna miss her...THX for being in the world of "Doctor Who"... You made the whole thing so exciting....
Fav doctor is matt smith here I could not match with Capaldi afterwards but that scene... That one scene... Always get me me 😭😭 I definitely should give him a new chance
If anyones viewing this back after a certain scene recently that looked quite similar to this then here is your space to let it all out people cuz I kinda teared up
I really wish these two got an ending like River or Donna. They were so close and even if they don't show it just the knowledge of these two living out their livers together for as long as possible would mean a lot. I mean he was willing to do anything to protect her and that's what made them dangerous but if they just went on safe adventures and she learned from her death to not do anything without the doctor then they would have been fine. And they still could have moved on to Bill after. The 70 years he was guarding Missy at the school he could have been with Clara. He wasn't doing anything dangerous then and Bill and Clara could have met before she passed away. It would also have been interesting if Bill and Clara had developed a relationship before she died because it would have brought 12 and Bill closer together. It would have also been easier to accept Bill as the new companion if Clara and the doctor lived a good life and Bill knew Clara.
