To those that doubt it, the story of seasons 1 & 2 being offered back to the BBC in the late 90's is absolutely true and has been verified. The employee told the Nigerian station that "they were all out on video" and to destroy the material. Why? Sheer and total ineptitude. The more you read into missing episodes the more you understand what a total shambles of an organisation the BBC truly is. The really sad truth is this kind of thing has probably happened a bunch of times with BBC employees willfully destroying or refusing material. I believe this had continued well into the 80's & 90's. Just remember we care, these people don't. Their just doing a job and probably quite half assed too. There's the story of the employee in the 80's who deliberately ignored the instructions to save the material and continued to destroy returned prints for years. Just because he was an asshole. That's all it takes for these things to be lost forever. Just think if that BBC worldwide employee had just bothered to make a phone call or even attempt to do his job properly we could have been watching Marco Polo, The Reign of Terror & The Crusade back in 1998 and re-watching them for the dozenth time now. It's a travesty we've all been robbed of our cultural heritage thanks to such carelessness and stupidity.
@christiancrowell4698

Absolutely true? Verified? Verified by whom? I have seen this tale reported as fact by a few places online (including a forum post by Ian Levine), but they never seem to cite a primary source or any evidence to back up the story. I don't doubt that such a thing could have happened (as you mentioned, there definitely was an asshole BBC employee in the 80s who continued to junk returned prints for no reason), just that the event would be known to us if it did.

True, but i reckon every business or company has always employed somebody or some ignorant persons who don't really give a crap and they let their total ignorance's of their own work place dictate to them what decisions they personally make and not what the BBC generally would've done naturally. But yeah, in a decade which saw; Shada being release onto VHS tape (with a video narration from Tom Baker himself) in 1992. Along with the newly rediscovered Tombs Of The Cybermen in 1991. its hard to imagine in 1993 they'd turn down Marco Polo or The Reign Of Terror once it was offered to them so soon afterwards!

The problem with videotape back then was just the cost of the media ($200 a cassette or more) and the cameras (thousands of dollars for BOTH camera recorders and set-top players). That's the reason it didn't take off until the early 1980s, really. They had to come up with more economical consumer formats. They had home players as early as 1963 but they were just too expensive and over the years more companies came and went with their own machines and tape formats. The economical standardization didn't come until VHS and Beta arrived. They had videotape in the 1950s and there are number of TV specials recorded in the late 1950s on videotape that still survive. They were eventually digitized or transferred to film like the surviving color clips of the 1960s Carson Tonight Show episodes were. The thing is what they had (videotape-wise) for the original Doctor Who was BETTER than what we got for VHS. Way-higher resolution, at least two times VHS quality. VHS is crap, guys. It wears out and the quality is at best inconsistent. I never liked the format that much, TBH. I grew up with it and besides the color issues (NTSC = "NEver The Same Color TWICE!") the audio recording was often bad in store-bought tapes. I don't know how many tapes I bought of movies and TV shows (had half the original Star Trek on VHS!) that had that horrible humming on them and it wasn't the play -- it was the stupid tape and poor processing of it! I never bought that much on VHS. I've watched a few Troughton serials on DVD and now the last storyarc Hartnell appeared in as the regular lead. What survived is in pretty good condition considering they viewed this as disposable entertainment! Ah, if they only knew--! The only way we'll get the missing episodes this point is if they DO more animated reconstructions with the surviving audio. I don't think they'll find much else. Maybe 3-4 more missing episodes on 16mm transfers but I think they've found pretty much all they ever will of what survived the great BBC tape wiping.
@TheZodiacz
@TheZodiacz 5 лет назад
Yeah that's true about home video being so costly. There was a copy made of The Ice Warriors in the 1960s by a university lecturer who had access to the equipment. He made them so his sick son could watch them while he recuperated from whatever he had wrong with him. Then of course as he didn't own the tapes and they were needed for their proper purpose they were reused. Including the 2 still missing episodes.

Having actually worked for the BBC and at TV Centre. I heard a story that the last episode of the tenth planet William Hartnell's regeneration scene was being used By the Blue Peter production team. The tape a 2 inch quad was in their production office in East tower, it was left there over night waiting to be returned to the BBC archive then at Windmill Road. The next morning tape had gone. This most likely in the 1980's. Josh you do a fantastic Job, such high quality both in production and contents. Australia and the Dr Who community should be proud of you.

Your videos just get better and better, Josh!:):):) I understand that further audio recordings have come to light that Mark Ayres is working on and apparently they are so good that they'll be the default for future releases. I adore Marco Polo. It's all about the journey even though the destination is great fun. All the TARDIS crew get good material (possibly Carol Ann Ford's best performance). I love the idea of covering Hartnell's holiday episode by saying that the Doctor was sulking as it feels so true to the character. Thanks to the tele snaps we can see how well Waris Hussein shot it (not that I was ever in any doubt of that!). It's got a lovely score by Tristram Cary (so different from his Daleks score).

I would like to be able to go back in time with a device that could record all these old Dr Who - and other shows - now believed missing, bring them back to now and get someone to colourise them and tweak them to make them look like they are recent recordings! No reconstruction from Tele-Snaps, no need to create animations using the audio footage - could even put surround sound on them - be almost as if broadcast television was in full colour and surround sound from the start - effectively making them future-proof - but viewers at home initially only had black and white sets with a single speaker in them!

I always look at this situation and think why they haven't taken this opportunity to do a remake of all the arcs that have missing episodes, and use the actors from An Adventure in Time and Space (David Bradley, etc etc) because if some of these episodes are most likely never going to reappear, why not honor it and use the same old techniques but with the docudrama cast, would be a fun project to see in my opinion.

I'd love to see Marco Polo be returned, although failing that, an animated reconstruction in colour as well as black and white. The coloured photographs make it look so beautiful, and I'd love to be able to experience that

At 01'59" you mention there were eight photos taken off air by a fan in Australia. One of these images (the single shot of Hartnell) has since been identified as coming from an episode of The Aztecs. Otherwise I'm seriously impressed by the production values of this. You've done a great job.

I just noticed an editing error (or something else). At 8:46, the map thing said that Episode 1 of The Crusade was recovered from New Zealand in 1998, but at 9:04, you said it was returned to the BBC in 1999.

We have just submitted 2 reel to reel tapes with complete audio for many 1960's episodes. These have proved to be the highest quality audio found. They may be used in any future endeavours to reconstruct missing episodes. Kaleidoscope are working with the tapes right now and any statement of theirs may be found on their Facebook page.

By the way, second comment, but I can't understand how the BBC had The Invasion Ep. 4 and then suddenly it's missing. I was looking at the list and the episodes for The Invasion listed '2, 3, *4* , 5, 6, 7, 8', and then the episode goes missing along with the already missing Ep. 1. It's just so confusing.

As per usual, amazing work. I think the only constructive criticism I have would be to discuss more not just how you can watch each lost episode but what you really think is best. Obviously that might just stretch your time far too much and take away from the more objective/documentary style of the videos. Either way, please keep this series up, amazing to see a fan put this much care into the wonderful 1960s years of who.

James Crosse yeah I like to keep it subjective! I generally prefer animations, but many don’t. I like it to be up to the viewer!

Hi josh... Yes, they are the "Randolph" tapes. They where in my possession for years until I recently passed them on to my son who then loaned them to kaleidoscope for investigation. They apparently informed him that they are the most complete with beginning and end soundtracks, with narrative and superb audio quality.

So I have the Lost in Time DVD box set, and it’s not playing on my Blu-ray Player. Any advice to get it to work? (I play it on my Xbox One.) It struggles to get to the menu. None of the episodes will work.

Jac0Frost0, have you actually considered the fact that your Lost in Time DVD box set will not play on your Blu-ray Player, because the discs are meant to be played on an actual DVD player ? Your Blu-ray player will only play Blu-ray discs.

@@Jac0Frost0SCZ , Also make sure that your Lost in Time DVD box set discs Region corresponds with the correct DVD player machine Region i.e. Region 1 discs to be played on a Region 1 DVD player or Region 2 discs to be played on a Region 2 DVD player etc. Also if you are lucky enough to get your hands on a multi-regional DVD player, that means the machine will play all DVD Regions 1,2,3,4 etc.

Rewatched all of these recently trying to figure out my list (got to rewatch galaxy 4 part 4 next) Marco Polo is more enjoyable now maybe because I’m older now. The Crusade though probably is my lowest one I’d like finding even if Reign is animated. I just can’t get much into that story. Reign I can. Galaxy 4 I like the story so the parts id rank higher but most Marcos episode are higher now than if I made this list a couple years ago
