Doctor Who - The Theme Tune (as Ron Grainer intended)

*CLARIFICATION: As some have said in the comments, and as the way I phrased it initially was somewhat misleading: no, this isn't exactly how Ron Grainer would have "wanted" the theme to sound in 1963 (not least because it includes instruments that didn't actually exist then), but what it it *is is the first time he himself had actually fully arranged a version of it, and so it's a lot closer to his own usual style/sound than the 1963 version (or indeed any other subsequent recordings) was/were.
ORIGINAL DESCRIPTION:
While Ron Grainer usually gets most of the credit for the Doctor Who theme tune, it was the arrangement work of Delia Derbyshire and the BBC Radiophonic Workshop that made it the haunting, memorable, distinctive classic that it's rightly lauded as. Grainer may have composed the tune, but had he been left to his own devices, would have arranged it very differently.
On the album "The Exciting Television Music of Ron Grainer" (1980), we finally got to hear what Grainer would have done with the theme. And this is it.

Not at all. He was the most serious incarnation of the Doctor. Other than maybe William Hartnell, but the first Doctor was quite different from the rest of them, it wasn't until Patrick that the character and show became more like what it is today. At any rate, Jon Pertwee's Doctor and run is so closely tied to the Derbyshire theme that I actually was really upset when they first removed the stutter in the beginning. Let's not even bring up the Delaware theme.

Yes, definitely the best part of that... otherwise rather lack-lustor version. I say lack-lustor because while it's got the 'funky' rhythm, almost all the melody is lost and it's really a bit monotonous. It would be interesting to have something more period accurate as Grayner might have imagined it, but really what Delia did was total perfection. I find the middle eight always comes out the best part of all alternative versions.

Just to clarify Seb this was part of a whole set of 'disco' era reworkings that Ron did at the invitation of Robert Kingston of Kingston music. Sorry to disappoint, but this was a 'disco' arrangement Ron Grainer did in the 1970s as a single release. The original version was arranged using his instructions to Delia Derbyshire, which included things like 'wind bubble', but it was only a short piece, which Delia Derbyshire managed to expand and enhance in her interpretation of the arrangement.
@borbetomagus
@borbetomagus 3 года назад
One article noted: “When I saw Ron Grainer’s score,” said Derbyshire, “there were some swoops indicated, and I assumed those were sine-waves. I think he may have described this as guitar plus something like a bassoon or something. He also used words like clouds and wind bubbles. Clouds, obviously one thinks of as filtered white noise, and wind bubble, I think we used the wobbulator.” The wobbulator is a device used with an oscillator to align radio signals, and Derbyshire used it along with 12 oscillators created by the Jason Motor and Electronic Company in London. This is a brief demonstration with Dick Mills (Delia Derbyshire's assistant) on how her rendition was pieced together -- /watch?v=usdlV55eIOw BBC has a page called "Recreating the sounds of the BBC Radiophonic Workshop" where (on the bottom of the page) they have virtual 'Ring Modulator', 'Tape Loops', 'Wobbulator' and 'Gunfire Effects'. Delia noted: "I remember an orchestral version came out very soon after the show began, I think it was done by Eric Winston and his Orchestra [on Pye 7N 15603; in January 1964]. He had someone at the back of the orchestra with an oscillator doing the swoops in real time. It sounded like some inane creature wobbling the oscillator, desperately trying to sound musical. I remember the disc-jockey David Jacobs picked it as his record of the month. I was disgusted!" /watch?v=CitL6ndCuIE

I would argue that Ron Grainer asked Delia to do the job because he lacked the imagination to do it himself. It was the Delia Derbyshire theme that made Doctor Who such an eternal success.
@FoundSongs
@FoundSongs Год назад
In the Doctor Who Origins documentary, Verity Lambert says that when she approached Grainer to write the theme, she proposed that it would be realized electronically. Lambert had originally tried to commission French musicians Les Structures Sonores, but when that didn’t work out, she asked Grainer to write the score and the Radiophonic Workshop to realize it. Needless to say, Delia Derbyshire’s arrangement exceeded everyone’s expectations.

If this HAD been the theme for DW in the 60s, and someone had posted the theme tune "as Delia Derbyshire intended" on youtube today, everyone would be like "that's horrible, it sounds nothing like Ron Grainers masterpiece." XD

I can't believe how many commentators here are assuming this version is in anyway similar to what Ron would have produced back in 1963! Ron was an experienced composer and arranger and perfectly capable of complying with the theme's requirements as given to him by producer Verity Lambert. He composed accordingly, producing a manuscript "with the sound colours for each line defined." The Radiophonic Workshop & Delia Derbyshire then played their own part in making the theme the classic it still is it today. The reaction to this video here is hysterically funny. Posts like "Thank god for Delia," "Delia did us all a favour" and "Delia saved us all" -- the impression is given that Ron's arrangement would have been similar to this (1980) version but luckily it was rescued by Delia! Ron *wanted* to work with the The Radiophonic Workshop because he knew what they were capable of doing -- he had worked with them before. This updated 1980 version was just something he did in the style of the day for a compilation album. He did something similar with his "Tales of the Unexpected" theme for the same album. I'm genuinely surprised that so many people are finding it difficult or impossible to understand this.

Fair enough, but this arrangement DOES sound like a lot of the other stuff RG was producing in the 60s - it's VERY reminiscent of the theme he composed for The Prisoner, for example. The Doctor Who theme as arranged by Delia Derbyshire is a real oddity when compared to the rest of what Grainer was doing in the 60s.

(Copied here from elsewhere, as this thing seems to be spreading like wildfire.) Ummm... NO, that is NOT "what Ron Grainer would have done with it". He couldn't have, for a start, as at least some of the technology we're hearing there didn't exist until 15 years later! That is what was done with it for an album release, after the public had already heard umpteen different versions anyway. It was quite common to utterly re-arrange themes in this way for compilation album release, especially if there was difficulty getting rights to the "official" version for the album, or if the original version was judged to be too short for an album track, or had just been too widely released already... You should hear some of the dire renditions of classic BBC themes that came out on their *own* albums over the years! There was in particular a trend for doing "disco-ised" versions of themes that were never meant for disco, of which this is clearly an example. Dead give away number one: There's no hint here of the distinctive bass line, which Ron Grainer definitely *DID* write on his original scrap of manuscript paper that was passed to Delia... Although the notation (to my interpretation at least) suggested something sliding back and forth between a rocky 4/4 beat and the more triplety (or 6/8) feel that Delia chose to stick to throughout. (I checked with Mark Ayres a while ago, and a tragedy of the BBC Radiophonic Workshop clearout is that said precious sheet of musical history went missing, and so far has not been relocated! =:o[ The closest you can get to actually seeing it these days is to get a copy of the first piano edition of the score. MY memory of it comes I *think* from either a photo in the Radio Times or a glimpse on a TV program back when the Radiophonic Workshop were celebrating their 21st anniversary: They got a lot of coverage on TV and Radio that year, plus an anniversary album of genuine, original RW recordings that included one of the two original edits of "Dr. Who", and which I think was the first time Delia (or any other individual RW composer) was actually credited for her work in a BBC product.) What we *DO* know was Ron's original *expectation* was to merge the radiophonic elements Delia was asked to provide with traditional instruments. (Direct quote: "I was going to book a band!") But on hearing what Delia had done, he realised the piece was complete and beautiful as it was, and asked for her to get co-credit. BBC policy blocked this. I'm getting a bit tired of the meme that's sprung up since Delia's death, that heavily implies that it was really *all* her genius that made "Dr. Who" and that it owes virtually nothing to Ron. It's great that Delia's getting the recognition she deserves at last, but the guy deserves better than that. They *both* did stellar work on that theme.

therealpbristow Ron and Delia are like two sculptors, a master and an apprentice. Ron, the apprentice, hewed the block into a rough shape. Delia, the master, did the detail work to make it the icon it is today.

Delia Derbyshire and her crew obviously made a major contribution, to say the least, to the eventual Doctor Who theme that we all know and love. But we should perhaps remember that as far as Ron Grainer is concerned even if you removed the Doctor Who theme from his resumé the body of work that would remain would still be fantastic. Tales Of The Unexpected, Steptoe And Sun, The Prisoner, Man In A Suitcase, Maigret and my personal favourite Shelley as well as the many film scores that he composed. Props to Grainer I say.

Four facts worth mentioning [updated 1 Feb 2022] [1] This most likely “groovy” producer demanded “modern” version of the Dr Who theme first appeared on a 1980 compilation album called “The Exciting Television Music of Ron Grainer” a record notorious for many scatter brained decisions such as a cover featuring the logo and head shots of various cast members of the “Tales of the Unexpected” TV series giving the deliberate impression it is a soundtrack from that program when it only includes the main theme, numerous track listing mistakes and an equally squirmy and camped up “modern” arrangement of Grainer's melancholic instrumental “When Love Grows Cold” from the “Edward and Mrs Simpson” TV series set in the 1930s. [2] The first producer of “Dr Who” Verity Lambert was quoted in an article published in The Daily Mirror [7.12.63] as saying that after receiving her brief for "a new sound way out and catchy" "He [Ron Grainer] went to work at his Putney home and three weeks later came back with the required noise written on manuscript paper". [3] When Brit movie buff Gerald Lovell wrote to Grainer in June 1980 [eight months before Grainers death] asking how he scored the Dr Who theme Grainer's reply was "In the usual way, on manuscript paper, but with the sound colours for each line defined". "I was asked to make it completely electronic but I was also specifically asked to make it melodic not just weird effects" adding "I had often used the Radiophonic Workshop facilities” [for an earlier completely sound effect scored movie “The Caretaker” and an orchestrated steam sound effect arrangement for the documentary “Giants Of Steam”]. When asked by Lovell which of the many arrangements of the Dr Who theme he liked the best Grainer wrote “I prefer the original probably because I worked on it" . [4] Go to RON AND THE ONDES MARTENOT KEYBOARD [the second item on the linked page] for details of Grainer's interest in composing electronic music three years before he wrote the Dr Who theme. rongraineracollectorsguide.blogspot.com/p/7-extras-selection-of-posts-that-have.html

The story I read was that Grainer -- who was out of the country at the time -- knew the theme was going to be arranged electronically, so he came up with something deliberately simple that the good folks at the Radiophonic Workshop could easily render on their equipment. If you think about it, the essence of the theme amazingly elegant in its simplicity. There's that distinctive bass line, the soaring "Ooooooo-ooooo-ooooo's" over the top... and that's it. I don't know if Grainer, master of high-energy bombast that he was, ever envisioned it as anything more than that. Still, this arrangement is Quinn Martin levels of awesome. Can we download it anywhere?
