Doctors are Leaving Medicine... Should you quit too?

How will you inspire anybody anymore if you throw away your opportunity of a life time. So many students wish they were as studious and intelligent as you. “Hey guys here’s how to become a Dr…you can do it…,”. How inspiring from a dropout….don’t leave you will regret it for the rest of your life.

I have recently came to conclusion that we have became XIXth century-like workers but still meet demands like ancient not-married priest-like maitre de medicine. Labour law also does not go with time in healthcare, other jobs do fight for their rights while we are still working 24hour shifts like some kind of freaks. Healthcare systems are falling worldwide and they will collapse sooner or later, it can't work like this.

As a 3rd year med student who discovered that medicine was not my "passion" after their 1st year, I second this.

I suppose my issue is that medicine isn’t even practical in my country (uk), you get paid like shit for long hours. It’s almost like a vocation at this point. The only people who should go into medicine in the uk are people who have rich parents to support them.

How does one have security? By being an expert. You’re more likely to succeed if you’re an expert at something, and you’re more likely to be an expert at something that you’re passionate about. If you’re saying that it’s oversold to follow passion, it’s probably because most people want to be comfortable and don’t want to spend most of their day working, or maybe not working much at all, meaning they won’t become an expert in a relatively short amount of time. And in that case, you’re fucked no matter which route you take, especially in this economy

Doctors earn poorly for the experience, background work and obstacles they encounter. Not to mention the long hours which no other healthcare staff do. A typical doctor is working twice the hours of a nurse to get similar hourly rate. The prestige is once upon a time myth. Doctors are abused by nurses, midwives, patients and their families, their own senior colleagues on a daily basis. In certain countries such as UK , senior nurses earn more than senior middle grade doctor by hourly rate. Yet this myth of doctors earning more still persists.

I'm a buddhist and a medical student, I totally agree with this. Cause no matter what life itself has sufferings, like getting sick , meeting people we don't like, lose people we love, death ... etc u name it, and none can escape this, hence the true liberation is when you are free from this samsara (cycle of rebirth).

Not easy to get there & Only in America if ur specialized you can possibly achieve 7 figs (meaning 10+ years unpaid, ur not even guaranteed residency match; so u actually have to enjoy it to get through or go through 10 years of hell lol). In Canada 50% of ur money is gone. Business is way more fun, high stress, closing deals gives you a high, having shit to do all the time never has you bored. Most people are looking for comfort tho, which is ok if that’s what u want.
