Hello John, Rousay is on my list for my next trip to Orkney, I am sure I visited the Brough of Birsay and the Broch of Gurness on my first visit to Orkney.
I couldn't get to Maes Howe because it was closed, but I highly recommend Taversoe Tuik chambered cairn on Rousay. You can see in from the outside even when it's locked up
Thank you Martin...this was a good video with lots of information as to what went on at the sites...I look forward to see more of your videos...love from Perth😁✨🖖
Cheers for this my brother, the ancient sites of our wonderful islands makes me wonder how many sites there must of been on the main land and probably destroyed over the years. Your work is amazing and can only wish you will inspire the future lads and lassys to remember oor roots! Tapadh Leat Bràthair, Alba Gu Brath!
Hi Kevin, good to hear from you, am glad you enjoyed the video, I am working on a new set of films from Kilmartin Glen, the first one should be up in a few weeks, Cheer'z Martin.
Although the Ring of Brodgar originally had 60 stones, placed at approximately 3° distance from each other, only 27 remain today. The North causeway is double the width of the South one...
I have been to Orkney and loved it. Spent the afternoon at Brodgar as well. It's an amazing place. The ancient sites I've managed to get to make me realize how much we've lost. Though we as modern man feel accomplished in technology, we've lost the sense of community and humility. These links to the past draw us because the future has become bleak.
I have seen online photos of a possible quarry site for these standing stones. That is a good observation regarding the angled tops of the stones, it will have been done deliberately. I hope you enjoyed the film.
I visited in 2004, going back this August 2022. My favorite site is Skara Brae, but also love the Broch of Gurness, and Maes Howe. I am really hoping to be able to see the excavations at the Ness of Brodgar.
Hi Colleen, that is great you are revisiting Orkney. Unfortunately I was unable to do Maes Howe justice in this video because I only had a few exterior shots, photography and filming is not allowed inside. I have also visited Skara Brae and the Broch of Gurness, Martin.
Wow.in the bible the twelve tribes put up stones.i believe that machir went to outer hebrides.and there is a machir bay.there.hebrides translates in ancient hebrew.to ...the hood. How would they know it was on the top.if they hadn't gone all around the uk
You did well to get to the Ring of Bookan. I was scared of the cows who ran along beside me as I walked along the road. I was glad of the fence. Also, as you say, it's private land. Heigho, another time. My favourite site is the Ring o Brodgar in the early hours, with the oyster catchers and curlew.
Thank you James! Orkney is well worth a visit if you like prehistory monuments. The Ness of Brodgar is awesome, I hope to visit the sites on Rousey on my next visit. Best wishes, Martin.
Brookan was my favorite and the Barnhouse landscape a very close second. I was born a Brooks, so that’s how Brookan took the lead. Again thank you for bringing me right into the landscape with you.😊
I have been to the Ring of Bookan a few times, not many tourists go there. Barnhouse would have been like Skara Brae in its day. Best wishes from Scotland, Martin.
