Documenting Cairo's first impressions

Why are foreigners dreaming of a vacation in Egypt while we Egyptians are dying for a visa to emigrate somewhere else? Despite all of the problems and the reputation of the country, they are attracted here - why?
We Egyptians forever complain about the endless, chronic problems that surround us. Some of us think that living in Egypt is like serving a prison sentence. Is there something that we cannot see about the country?
Filmed over the course of about eight days ‘Documenting Cairo’s First Impressions’ captures the spontaneous feelings and reflections of foreigners in Cairo. The interviews took place in streets, cafes, public transportation, and in the early hours of the morning after parties had finished - the point is to try and see Egypt from another angle. Asked on the spot about their feelings, the interviewees had no chance to prepare what they were going to say; the answers were deep and honest.
The most common attraction among foreigners? The people. The Egyptians. The people of the country are the most attractive thing in it. The Egyptian personality is very open, lively, interactive, proactive, and communicative. This is something you learn after your first ride on a rush-hour Metro.
Some of the interviewees were from Western countries where life is seen as direct, strict, and plain. Many foreigners are attracted to Egypt because there is always a new, unfamiliar thing to see or do. The Italian student at a restaurant in a small alley said she found focus and harmony in the chaos of the city. Maybe it’s because she was used to a controlled and organized environment; she was eager for change.
It turns out Egypt is a nice place to live. We can work towards making it better; we just need to look at it from another angle.
Jason Stoneking, the American artist who reads out some of his thoughts through the video, talks about the anarchic roads in one scene. Egypt’s overwhelming traffic is usually called a chronic problem, but Jason sees its creative chaos and praises how drivers are constantly aware of every small detail around their vehicle as they navigate the city.
Jason and his artist girlfriend Leslie came here earlier this year for an art residence program. They started a project of painting the greyish-brown satellite dishes that sprout across the capital’s rooftops. He said that one day he went up on a rooftop and realized the city needed some paintwork - he meant that Egypt needs a few colorful touches and then everything will be just good.

Egypt is a childhood dream for me to visit. There is a charm, excitement and magic in developing countries that is impossible to find in developed nations where everything has to be so orderly and exact.

Yeah, except the part that Westerners will be coming to Egypt. Maybe in 500 years, just as it took 500 years to build the West from where it was about 500 years ago like Egypt is today to where the West is today.

vecchia comes from the italian word "Roba Vecchia" which means "old things". The reason for that is the fact that 100 years ago Italian immigrants used to do that as a job I'm telling you that as an Italian citizen with Egyptian origins

Ibn Khaldun (pioneer of historical sociology) wrote about Cairo: "What one can imagine always surpasses what he can see,exept Cairo, because it surpasses anything one can imagine". Egyptians have more energy in one day then whole Western civilazation in history. They have talent to live and survive.

After a month in Egypt I’ve just returned home and am still organizing my thoughts and experiences to write about it. It’s such a contradiction that I’m having trouble explaining when people ask me what it’s like. This video captures an excellent cross section of what Cairo is like. Other cities in Egypt are different, but also similar in that while problems are apparent, the people are lovely. I’ve been charmed by Egypt, and look forward to returning.

I am Egyptian, This is a misleading documentary... Many facts are true but the whole video is directing people to like the life in Egypt ... What about asking those people if they can lose their nationality to live in Egypt forever? ... Hospitality make foreigners think Egyptians are always like that but the truth is most of them do thing to have another in return

+DRAhmedTech I somehow agree with you ...... but our problem is that we keep looking into the dark side , we are full of negative thoughts , we are LAZY to do anything , we just want luxury and comfort ALL time ...... all youth just want to change everything , however they don't change themselves ...... why can't everyone think of something by which he can help the country to develop , even if it something really not that big ..... ( like , cleaning your area instead of just complaining about the rubbish , try to speak to others positively ...etc.. ) I think one major problem we have is that , pretty much no ONE is in the Right place ...... I mean no one is doing what he wants to do ........ IF we love what we do , I grantee that Egypt will be the BEST ......... and yeah we should stop talking a lot about politics and religion .........

Anyone who bases their opinion on Cairo based on this documentary will get a shock if they ever show up. It's not as nice as you make it out to be. Actually there is nothing nice about it. No you cannot just walk around anytime. No Its not safe. Yes I did meet some very hospitable people during my stay but this isn't so much an Egyptian thing as it is just a people thing. There are good people and there are bad people, where ever you go. This does not mean Egypt is a good place. In fact its a hell hole. Every building is decrepit and falling apart. Garbage fills every area it can possibly reach. The smog in Cairo is one of the worst cases in the world! As far as saying they have a driving system that works that's bull. Its a lie to say people don't get hit or hurt by their screwed up driving. They do. I saw it! When the victim reached out to a police officer for help the officer reluctantly helped pull the guy of the street and then waived him off. The guys leg was obviously screwed up and NO ONE cared. There is one and only one reason people visit Egypt. And people swallow it hook line and sinker. "You got to go once in your life to see the pyramids and historic sites." This is absolute bull. People will say things like, "l have fond memories of Egypt but I wouldn't go back ." Not only do people say they wouldn't go back if you really press it you will often hear ,"You couldn't pay me to go back!" Is it really worth spending your time and money in a place that your only happy when your finally leaving saying, "I will never come back here. You couldn't pay me enough!"

Cairo is fantastic. Why? Many reasons. First, you can walk around at any time of day or night without any problems from low-lifes unlike in most 'Western' Cities and even Towns, nowadays. People are always out, Families, young and old alike. Even the street kids who have nothing and sleep under the bridges have a smile. I often have a kick-about with them if they're playing football. Once you get to know Cairo you can always find a shady, cool spot to get out of the 45c heat in Summer. (Garden city is good if you're in the center). Crossing the road is an art form which once you get the hang of, is easy. People will really try their best not to run you over so don't worry. People will talk to you wherever you are and will often invite you back to their house or to a coffee shop (Ahwa). Yes, the fumes from the traffic can make you ill, but no worse than smoking 40 cleopatra cigarettes a day. Taxis can be a pain and occasionally you will end up with a real dick-head of a driver, but mostly they're ok. Just find out how much a journey should cost from an Egyptian friend BEFORE you flag a taxi down. Of course, expect to pay a little bit more than an Egyptian-they have to make a living. Don't pull out a big wad of money either. Once the driver sees that you're screwed. And lastly, remember a little bribe/tip/present will get you a long way in Egypt from parking your car and having it looked after to the young boy or girl who is just trying to earn a living in a hotel. DON'T be tight with tipping what is to you only a few pence but to them. a living.

If you are a foreigner in Cairo you will be harassed by vendors and merchants much more than you would be by low-lifes in Western cities... but Cairo is a great city to visit and I am hoping to go back there soon. and you are right, the people of Cairo are great!
@floydpitt7590
@floydpitt7590 8 лет назад
Yes true, you _will_ be harassed by the merchants etc and it does get annoying after a short time, but my point was/is that it's not done with aggression (not usually anyway), and you certainly don't have to worry about being attacked or robbed etc. Not when I was last there at least.
@floydpitt7590
@floydpitt7590 8 лет назад
You're very kind.- I have met people who say they don't like Egypt, but it's only because they don't know how things work there and they expect 'Western' ways. Get into 'Egyptian mode' and you'll be fine!

So far very interesting how you’ve made an observation of the hosing of the streets, then make up a story about it. You were there beside the people doing this but lacked the curiosity for truth and passion for learning to find out why this is done. IMO, there is no worse evil than narrow minded judgmentalism. Edit; I am crying. You are the only person I have ever met who understands about the traffic and the drivers. I have come to expect narrow mindedness from everyone. I am so relieved to be wrong.

The Sudanese guy has the best comment... but the reason why young people want to go abroad is because there is not much opportunity for them in Egypt. My nephew graduated accounting at Cairo University but he ended up assembling fancy jewelry at home to sell to his friends. My other nephew has been engaged for three years but could not get married due to lack of work and no source of income. So when I went to Cairo three months ago, I planned out with him how he can get a new car so he can be an Uber driver. He is fortunate that I can lend him $5000 for down payments which he needs to pay back in a year's time. The bank lent him the other 50% but with 10% interest rate. The the government takes 20% from whatever he makes and had to pay the Uber every week for like $20. Life in Egypt is hard. That's why, young people want to go abroad. Before that, I lent him $5000 because he and his friend wanted to operate a cafe. But after a week into renovating the place, the police stopped them because they did not have license. If they get license, it will take forever.. He lost the $5000.

as a man from Sweet Home Alabama, I was blessed by Allah to live in Cairo for four wonderful years from 2006 till the end of 2010. Had an unforgettable stay. Worked there as a Systems Engineer, had a 14th floor 300 square meter flat on the Corniche behind the Maadi Yacht Club. I could see / hear the pyramids The Sound & Light Show nightly from my patio overlooking the Nile. Miss my friends from the ACE Club and my weekly trips to El Fishawy coffee shop at the Khan El Khalili bazaar. Did it all: sailed the Mediterranean coast from Alexandria to Port Said, up and down the Suez Canal, climbed Mt. Sinai at Saint Katherine's, dived the Red Sea at Sharm El-Sheikh, drove up through Israel to Jerusalem, by train to 'Upper Egypt' Aswan, felucca down river north to Luxor, Valley of the Kings & Queens, Temple of Hatsheput, Nile cruise ship onto Dendera. After a month you get used to the trash, poop, and diesel stink - it's a wonderful place to live with totally awesome people and more history than one can hardly learn.

But I must confess, I have met wonderful beautiful minded Egyptians who will go a long way to help you. The problem is that the society needs to be educated on cleanliness and stop being prejudice. I am a westerner who has lived in Cairo and I find the thoughts of Jason Stoneking patronizing and a great lack of understanding about the people and how their Islam effects there interactions. All muslims who are practicing say Inshaa Allah not because they live in desperation, and many of us don't but it comes from our awareness of Allah and our constant hope for the mercy we want to be granted, inshaa Allah. His comments about garbage and water are true but your in one of the world's largest cities... with an outrageously corrupt government...

Egyptians say "Insha'Allah" because the Quran says to do it. its not because they have been disappointed and think they don't have control over their lives "even for a few hours" as you say, its because as a Muslim you know that God is in charge of the future , not you, and everything happens because it is the will of God. It is a way of constantly reminding yourself to be humble before the will of God. The Quran clearly says you must say Insha'Allah every time you say "I will be sure to do something..." like that

Not a fan of this video. Far more bitter than most of us feel about our home. Everytime it cuts to your voice over i start to feel as though you developed a presumption that is not truly reflective of the peoples warmth. Andy's experience is much more familiar to me of the peoples overall tone, rather than bs such as " they have been through too much unforseen disappointment" ( which is true but not applicable next to the phrase Inshallah whatsoever). Simply, no. That phraseology is completely miss-assessed and shows the scope which this video was intended to be seen thru. Long Live Andy

Hispanics people also use the term God willing unlike Americans. And I don’t agree with the narrator it’s not because of uncertainty! It’s because We put God first before us, Love the people very caring and hospital 💛💜❤️🧡💛💚💙

Lol if you had a problem in America, such as if you were in pain, you'd be lucky if one person checked on you

Ahh, from my humble opinion. The issue is most benefited from Egypt contributions but Egypt have not benefited from others. You can tell there are no Romans here?? No Greece. No Franco nor Anglo. No Chino nor Indochino.

At the end of the video, the clerc man was angry Kind of racist toward the american. He asked him if he was american, the guy answered Sorry..! The clerc thaught he was syrian...he replied: soery soery which means syrian syrian. Egyptian don t like american nor israelis jews

Insha'allah as defined by the man narrating this video is incorrect...it's not about Egyptians feeling no control over their destinies, it's about God having control over the future. Important difference.

Inshau Allah. I'd differ with your explanation of why people say Inshau Allah. They are saying this because they leave their destiny up to God, not because they are insecure. Their reverence for God - who is able to turn any event at any moment is why they say Inshau Allah.
