American living in Cairo talks about her life there

An American lady got work in Egypt, eventually married an Egyptian and now has two children. She talks about her life as an American living in Cairo and Egypt. I have posted a series of 7 videos that cover my Egypt and Jordan tour. You can reach them most easily by doing a RU-vid search with the following entry: Egypt-Jordan part 1 of 7 --- and after you've seen part 1, then replace "1" with "2" (and so forth) in the search box until you've seen all 7.

Families living in the same block of flats is actually very very typical for Greeks as well.

I lived in Egypt for 20 years.. I am an American Muslim, fluent in Arabic. She gave an excellent account, honest and accurate..I love Egypt, and would not have left if it were not for the political mess.

Diane Stetson You are an American Muslim as in born there or born abroad with a family who speaks Arabic? Please help me how I can learn the language other than living there?I am able to watch arab tv but other than that I was wondering if you know an online vocabulary where I can test my knowledge and practise? Maybe u know an online course with egyptian arabic? Not Libiyan or Maroccan but specifically the Egyptian dialect. I've been trying for years but the alphabet doesn't even matter anymore to me, I just wanna be able to communicate.
@Serag-ij1oj
@Serag-ij1oj 9 лет назад
***** I'm an Egyptian and I'm not sure if there is a legitimate source for learning the Egyptian dialect.If I was in your place I would either surf youtube and google for it or have an Egyptian friend which seems far fetched. However,keep in mind that it's the easiest arabic dialect and I think it would be easy to pick up through interaction with egyptians.
@otpls7165
@otpls7165 9 лет назад
Ahmed Serag Hmm thx for the ideas but interaction is not really an option because therefor I'd need someone here and online I'd use the arabic alphabet which I can't. Will keep searching on YT and Google then.. Maybe you can recommend me an Egyptian radiostation where they don't speak English (NileFM does?) and where they cover most subjects like the news or celebs but not constantly songs because I noticed radio improved my English a lot too. I found NogouhmFM, Elaghany, Diab, Zabzba, which one is good or maybe you know a better one? And thanks for your help by the way, really appreciated!
@Serag-ij1oj
@Serag-ij1oj 9 лет назад
***** I'm very sorry,it's just that I don't listen to radio stations nor arabic pop music because it's not not my cup of tea. However typical egyptians do listen to them and I don't categorize myself as a typical egyptian. It seems that you will have to do some research on your own :S. I really wish I could have helped you but I'm sorry and I wish you the best of luck .

I became friends with an Egyptian online a while back. He often said things that confused me - like because I couldn't usually get online at a reasonable hour to talk to him, it was fine for him to be up at 1 to start speaking to me. I'm still always surprised by how kind he is, considering the kind of people I know. This video was very helpful in understanding the culture.

There has being a mistake concerning the charity part : In Islam you must give charity( which we call Zakat) only and only if the two conditions that follows are satisfied : First your money must exceed 40 Golden Dinars which is evaluated depending on the change Second this money must be your saving for more than a year, If you spend it before , you are not obliged to give charity

Thanks for sharing your insights and they are quite accurate about marrying an Egyptian in Egypt . I had some wonderful memories living 10 years in Egypt, and of the Egyptian people as well. But raising my 2 Egyptian American sons in Egypt was horrible because I just couldn’t get ahead, or afford a good private school, and living in close to poverty. I was so thankful to move back to New York where my kids could go to a public school and have a better life in New York than I would ever be able to give them not to mention they would have a heck of a time to get ahead too

The big difference between Egypt and the USA is that Egypt has a real culture. The mainstream American culture is bankrupt. There's only commercial culture where corporations tell people what they should like, what they should think and value. That's why young people in America tend to gravitate toward subcultures like hip hop, punk, or skateboarding life. They don't have a culture. There's a void within them. America is not superior just because it has more wealth.

Please could you tell me the name of this lady resident in Egypt? It's so wonderful to learn of her eager assimilation into Egyptian life and culture, and furthermore she is the epitomy of class, eloquence, culture, and worldly style, rare otherwise these days in the modern age. She hence reminds me of icons from the past like Athina Livanós, model Iris Loutraki, Evyenía Niarchos, Mary Crist Fleming, Jean Shrimpton, Fabiola of Belgium, Dovima, Suzy Parker, Verushka, Queen Victoria Eugenia Battenberg, and/or Queen Noor of Jordan. Compliments dear lady, money cannot buy the eloquence and flair that you possess! You may decide forever to shun the public eye but nonetheless your panache and your experience of living in foreign countries and what you've taken away shall always leave you standing out in a crowd! Mabruk!

Not all men in Egypt treat their women badly. The new generation is more educated and civilized towards women than many other countries and even in EUR and America. Bad men who don't respect women exist everywhere and in every country so it is not fair to generalize men's behavior in Egypt.

Egypt is a really good country to learn Arabic as their dialect of Arabic is understood all around the Arab world and Egypt it self is very modern and there's people from all over the world that come to study and live there, so you won't be alone ! Egypt is the heart of the Arab world , so you'll have plenty to do there and won't be bored, But be careful people don't try to rip you off coz that's what they tend to do , people are very nice there , especially the men , they know how to treat a girl

I wish Egyptians would be willing to help each other as much as they will to help foreigeners... Am I right,Egyptians? 😶 And she said the reality about Egypt , perfectly. But I guess she was right about a thing, which I would call we are "homey" if I spelled it right, like the relation between people is a little warm than any country, like when you get into a bus or a "microbus" , hehe it's so warm there. I guess Egyptians act in many cases as "we all are in the same train", so we are pushed to respect and be more mature as life Is a little harsh more than European countries or USA.. And yes our street driving are just fuked up.

Yes good and true about life in Egypt. In Luxor the christians do drink, and alcohol is available everywhere. There are no drink driving laws....... yet. I walk around late at night alone in Luxor and not just in the main tourist areas and do not worry, I would not do it in England. Sometimes I get confused when shopping and once asked for a penis when I wanted a cucumber! The stall holder and bystanders had a good laugh, but yes they appreciated my efforts and I went home with what I wanted.

For any foreign woman thinking of marrying or who is married, to an Egyptian and/or Muslim, may I suggest you reading these 2 books: "An American Bride in Kabul" by Phyllis Chessler and "Not Without My Daughter" by Betty Mahmoody. Betty Mahmoody is head of an organization that helps protect children involved with parents who come from 2 different cultures. This organization is called, "One World For Children". She has also written a book, entitled, "For the Love of a Child" a compilation of stories from other children caught in that tug-of-war between these bi- nation children.

So, we are treated to the experiences of a very privileged white woman in Cairo. Well, well, she has a great time. Lucky for her she is not routinely beaten or mistreated by her Egyptian family because if she were she would have absolutely no legal protections and if she opted to get out she would have to leave her children with the abusive family.

***** you are totally correct. If she divorces the muslim husband, she can be kicked out of his house and never be allowed to see her kids again. Most women stay with the muslim husband until the kids are grown.

Friendly and polite, huh? That's not what I receive on social media. I get cold shoulders by Egyptians who claim to be christians. I give a message to one of them; I wind up getting ignored, not 1 peep. As far as finding an Egyptian wife for myself, we shall see what my destiny is.
@nooranismail7941
@nooranismail7941 4 года назад
That’s the thing, social media is full of shit , fake people, people who claim that they’re someone else that’s why you don’t judge a country by what you see on social media
@Religious_man
@Religious_man 4 года назад
@@nooranismail7941 Then why do they represent Egypt?
@nooranismail7941
@nooranismail7941 4 года назад
Dennis Sphatt but they don’t represent Egypt they are probably some teenagers that have nothing to do in life, Egypt is 100 millions and of course they are not all the same, actually Egypt is known for the kind and generous people , especially the Christian Egyptians , on social media they’d insult Islam and Muslims but in real life they are very kind, I live next to a church and I’m friends with some of them
@Religious_man
@Religious_man 4 года назад
@@nooranismail7941 I don't talk to teenagers and I already mentioned that these "christians" are fake. There is no peace without communication. Stop denying it.
