1) I recommend this Resin Printer for beginners: geni.us/5CANog 2) Download STL of Dice: bit.ly/dicestl

I'm not lying when I say I have spent the past 12 hours trying to make this shape on my own out of my own stubborness. This was way easier than anything I was trying to do, thanks!

I love the presentation Kevin. "Top Shelf"! I used to go back and forth video to sketch to recreate myself. Now I can see it once. go to sketch and draw to completion. (that's MY gage of progression)! Moreover: 90% of my learning input has been through Kevin, sooo... Good on you Kevin !!!

In case anyone needed other dice shapes(or just other polyhedrals) like a D20 or D8 the exact same process works just use the the dihedral angle for the shape you want and the proper base shape in the case of D20 and D8 its an equilateral triangle

3:03 As a dice nerd that is aggravating, making fair dice is all about precision and you have a far more precise number ready to go but then intentionally introduce inaccuracy! The stitch is forced to pull the sides together creating irregular side lengths...
@gabedarrett1301
@gabedarrett1301 3 года назад
So how would you make one?
@ProductDesignOnline
@ProductDesignOnline 3 года назад
You have a very valid point. This was more for fun than anything. I wouldn't recommend printing dice to anyone if accuracy is what they're going for. You can use the equation [ π − arctan(2) ] instead of rounding and you can change the stitch tolerance to 0, which will help on the Fusion 360 end.

What about the different amount of material (mass) missing from the different numbers? does that grind your gears too?
@Robinlarsson83
@Robinlarsson83 3 года назад
@@ProductDesignOnline Great video, as always! But I have to say that the rounded up angle bothered me a bit, both for the inaccuracy, but probably more that it must have introduced a secondary error when you did the point to point move. The 2 corners of the adjacent pentagons can not have been in the same place, correct? :) I assume the error was very small and anyway erased with the Stitch tolerance, but still, it bugged me ;) Would there be any other easy way to align the corners exactly, even if one did not know the angle between each face of the dodecahedron, say it was a more random shape or something? Could it be done with joints? I´m very new with Fusion 360 so sorry if its obvious how it should be done. I've learnt a lot from your videos already, thank you for your work!
@ProductDesignOnline
@ProductDesignOnline 3 года назад
@@Robinlarsson83 Yep! You could use Joints to position them. With the Joint feature, you would set the Joint origin - likely the center of one face - and then select the opposite face (of the other half). You would then set the offset of the Joint according to the thickness of the model.

Hi! I tried following this tutorial twice, but after I Copy body 1-6, rotate them 180 degrees and try to connect the points - It wont fit like yours do. I have followed it to the best of my ability, I even tried once using the real 116.56505 degree values, but that made it worse. I wanna make a 12 sided die where the numbers are 1,2,2,3,3,3,3,3,3,4,4,5. I tried downloading your finished STLS, but I cant edit the numbers on those. Not sure if its because an update or I am doing something wrong, but I followed every single step here, but fell out when it was time to connect the 6 bodies

Am I right in thinking this method isn't parametric? - i.e. I can't change the dimension of the pentagon and it update the resulting dodecahedron.

Hi Mark. Check out the "Sweep" command. You can create your path using a 3D sketch. What is the track for?

Thanks for rapid reply. It is for the roof of an architectural model designed by a student. However, the shape is a figure eight with a lower layer going under a bridge just like racetrack.

Yep, you can! I was originally going to do that in the tutorial... but the Text feature is not yet fully parametric...so that part has to be manually taken care of.

Hi Kevin, I watched your tutorial on how to make a custom dice in fusion 360.Now dodecahedron has even more types, such as a small stellated dodecahedron. I have been busy making this, where was more difficult than I thought, I have tried it in different ways but without no luck. The first attempt was way too hard, the second was better, but I'm struggling to get the model to fit together. With the move and rotate function it will be possible, but not the easiest way I think. What would be your approach? First make a dodecahedron, and then continue modeling from there? Regards from the Netherlands, Paul
@larrybud
@larrybud Год назад
had to look up what a stellated dodecahedron was... I would think you would do it exactly the same way, but before you patch the pentagon, you would create the stellated portion. then patch that entire object as shown in the video.

@ProductDesignOnline
@ProductDesignOnline 3 года назад
Great question! Surface edges must be adjacent to each other to stitch successfully. The Stitch command has a tolerance control that provides an upper limit that helps the software determine the proper edges that are used for stitching. In our project, the edges should all be touching/aligned because we placed them in place. This feature comes into play more when you have complicated surface objects with a lot of curvature.

Your dice is not totally "fair" though, since you rounded the dihedral angle. Not that is matters.

Great point, Pavel. Folks should not round up if they want it to be a 'true' dice. That said, my 3D print was more for fun and not the highest of tolerances anyway :)
