I remember this! This was one of my favorite commercials from '76-a great era for car commercials in general. This one capitalized on what Rex Harrison did best-proper British song-pattering à la "My Fair Lady"-to bring a sense of luxurious refinement to an "economy" car (but not so economical by today's eco-standards). Aspen was also where my parents went on their honeymoon! Thanks for bringing back this rare gem! Can anyone post Rex's other Aspen ad?

As a long-time Aspen driver, I can safely say that the only thing unbelievable about it is the fact that some agency pitchman was actually inspired to link the word "unbelievable" to this car. Somehow, more accurate words like "unremarkable" and "unreliable" were overlooked.

Rex Harrison made this a great advertising campaign for Dodge, and the car had its merits like decent gas mileage, very efficient use of space and a comfortable ride. But after my folks got a 1977 one early in 1982 to replace our 1973 Plymouth Satellite that got totaled by a drunk driver, we unloaded it after two months. The odometer, though working when we got it, had been disconnected for a time, and on the road it was a real dud! It would stall often, and out on the highway my dad had to gun it up to at least 75 mph to really get the engine to crank to our satisfaction! Before too long, my mother kept repeating, "I hate this car with a passion!" The Aspen, its Plymouth Volare twin and the Chrysler Cordoba were the only decent sellers Chrysler had a the time, and it was problems like these that put its survival in jeopardy. Lee Iacocca arrived just in the nick of time!

We had a 1979 Volare - basically the same thing as the Aspen but with a different badge. It ran for 150,000 miles with only a handful of issues. Mileage was fair on the 225 slant six. Comfort was commensurate with price and we had no problems with paint finish. Basically it was decent car for the price, sold at a time when most cars were fairly shitty including rusty, bloated, anemic garbage from Ford and GM. The imports of that era like Honda, Toyota and Datsun were total rust-buckets in 4 years. I had a 1980 Honda Civic that was the worst car I ever owned.

I had a 1978 Aspen. Biggest piece of shit that I ever owned. I used to have to carry a spare voltage regulator in the trunk. They toasted themselves like every 3 months. Luckily it was a one bolt replacement, but you had to watch the amp gauge like a hawk or you'd kill the battery, when the regulator went. The saving grace was that it had a gauge instead of an idiot light.

They really did use the public as their testing bench with these cars. 78 & 79 automatic versions were notorious for stalling out in reverse because the lockup converter they introduced didn't have all the kinks worked out yet.

Though stylish and well appointed, no Aspen or other 1976 Dodge would have the cachet of the hottest import in America 25 years earlier - the MG TD.

How do they even compare? besides being cars. If you have to compare them based on that. The Aspen is a better car in every way except for if you want a micro convertible.

Rex Harrison literally lists off every car he would rather be in a commercial for in descending order. I love it. The perfect malaise era commercial: Catering back to some sort of vague past glory ("My Fair Lady" or the Edwardian era or the 60's...?), completely misunderstanding the market segment (what people wanted and what a "compact" car actually is), and painfully not self-aware. And it's more Edwardian than "British," I think Mr. Regular couldn't tell the difference back before he actually went to the UK. Even so, it's so watered down and confused, I don't blame Mr. Regular.

Doctor Robert; nice way to troll there, bud, but I was a young teenager when this commercial aired, and while I could care less about the car, I loved the fact that there was still something on TV that appealed to somebody other than the punks and potheads who were buying disco records and watching filmed Led Zeppelin concerts. But, hey, how's your content creator video career going there, Scorsese?

I had '76 Aspen coupe... 225 slant six with a 4speed. Good paint, no rust, never broke down = Great Car!!! Maybe it was a fluke. I do agree that ALL of the cars in the mid '70's were pretty crappy! I have owned multiple muscle cars from the '60's and early '70's but that Aspen was my favorite for some reason.
