Adjusted for inflation a 64 D100 was like $30k, the wedge option $40k. A Lil' Red Express was around $40k all together. . The Trx is a genuinely laughable $100k lump of Daddy's money unobtainium... What a great story Tim! Awesome job with that little Dodge Truck history lesson. Not too many people these days know of the CSS. My truck also originally came with the 400 2bbl, wish I still had that engine.
I remember a Dude truck and a short bed Palamino that used to run around here in my town, back when not many thought much about them, but I and some others took notice.
I remember a Warlock at my local 1/4 mile strip pulling off low 14's. My Dodge truck is an '88 D-100 I bought new. 159k in 35 years. V6 5 speed. Great trucks.
Wow I loved that walk down Memory Lane. I'd like to go do a burnout on Memory Lane as a matter of fact. You are right about the Dodge trucks in the 1960's when I was a kid. Work trucks. My dad started looking for a '78 Lil Red in the fall of '78 but the '79's were already out (he didn't want a cat and preferred the '78 grille) and he couldn't find any leftover '78's. He ended up buying a new '78 W100 with the 318 and put in a 440-6 Pack. Made his own Dodge hot rod! haha
Good Video! Reason LiL Red Express was quicker than the Magnum/Cordoba/300/Aspen RT/Volare Super Coupe because the cars had Lean Burn that zapped performance..Remove that and run the same carb and boom! Different story! But the cars never looked so cool the Stacks on the LiL Red look so,so good!! Most cars had a 2.XX gear ratio I believe the 3.21 was the top dog gear for the E-58 cars and the 400 4bbl performance version in the Magnum GT vs 3.55's for the truck.. Again I LOVE Dodge Trucks!! Bought/sold them since the late 80's ditto all Chrysler cars..I regret selling a 1979 Short Box Club Cab Power Wagon back in the mid 80's,truck was nearly perfect 318 4bbl sold it because back then I didn't like the color,how stupid right! Never did get another one like it,never a Power Wagon! Oh well,I still have the same 70 Charger and old lady since 1994 not sure which one I would give up first lol (obviously the car hmm maybe).

Yes, there were so many I could have but I thought the video was getting long! Midnight Exp 440 and only 200 made! Then the '89 shelby convertibles. 5.9 R/T Dakotas... The Macho trucks in the later 70's! Just so many cool trucks!

My first truck ever was a '97 Clubcab 2wd with the 5.9 L.....good truck! I finally gave it away after the dash crumbled into 100 pieces, and the body rusted pretty bad. Then, I had an '05 1500 Daytona 4x4....5.7 Hemi. Another good truck! I finally traded it in at 184,000 miles after fixing alot myself. It was rusting too, but not as bad as the '97. I was getting worried about the cam/lifter issue. I regret trading it in though.....working on it was not a big deal, but it was my daily. Living in the rustbelt, I opted for an aluminum bodied 2015 F-150 Platinum.....beautiful truck for a daily driver.....every available option and a 5.0 Coyote. And, this 5.0 has more power than the '05 5.7 Hemi. But for the amount I got on the Daytona at trade-in, I should've kept it.
Good video! Seems I read somewhere there were performance options in the late 1950s. 413s in the tail fin trucks, as I recall. Might've been a one-off thing too? If I remember right, the guy that had the one in the article bought a substantial amount of big Dodge trucks.
I had a 92 D150 short bed with a 5.2 Magnum, 5 speed and 3.55 gears. I can verify it out ran SS454 trucks of that generation. I added a sure grip and the Mopar computer and embarrassed quite a few people. Out ran a buddy who had a 75 HP Sneaky Pete nitrous plate on a 350 powered 92 Chevy truck. Sold it to buy my first house and I've always missed it!
New subscriber …! I have a 1998 Dodge Ram 1500 2 Door Club Cab with a 318.. The dashboard sucks, but it has pretty good freaking interior, with electric everything..! I have had it for seven or eight years I guess maybe longer… But I just wanted to say this dog on truck has turned out to be my favorite pick up truck of any I have owned… I will be 70 In March ..🙄 and I believe I have owned just about every popular pick up truck over my lifetime that most of us have heard about… Growing up primarily a Chevy person, I found when I did get my hands on a Mopar product, that the 318 and of course the slant six tower of power, were the most reliable and dependable motors I believe they make..! I always thought of the 318 of Dodge as the 283 of Chevrolet…
I bought a new ‘89 Shelby Dakota, 318 tbi, auto, 3.9 rear gear. I knew it was no killer, but decent to about 3500 rpm… So then in ‘92 my brother buys a 5.2 Dakota, auto, 3.5 rear gear. When we raced I could stay with him to about 35/40 mph, then it was all over, he just walked away lol.
I wonder why they made the cam smaller after 92 magnums? Had guys tell me this before but they didn't know why they made more power in 92. 92 was when i was born too!
People complained about a "rougher idle", lack of low end response. They went smaller with the cam and exhaust - even shrunk up the size of the the exhaust manifold exit ports
@@318willrun What about the 360 magnum, Have they always been the same? I just traded my uncle (procharged Mopar) a 1997 dodge Dakota for a 360 magnum block. Plan is to build it for my 74 Satellite.
@@somewhatfast 360's didn't see much change in the long block, just a little in the kegger intake in the later years. You got a great foundation for the Satellite!
@@318willrun Going to keep the 318 for now. But The block in the satellite has a 1987 casting and the wheels are 1987 Chrysler 5th avenue wheels so someone used an old Chrysler as a donor car back in the day. But it'll be fun to cruise in until I build the 360!
I had read the 400 and 440 equipped cop cars were the fastest domestic cars built in 1978. I think I pulled that out of one of the mopar cop car books. It stuck in my head because I happen to have a 78 Monaco cop car.
Bought a 93' Dakota with the 5.2 for $550 last year. Guy thought the trans was bad... It only needed the throttle cable adjusted! Turned it into a dually and it's great. Pretty excited to learn it has more power than other years!
I wonder how many of those CSS trucks still exist, cause only 50 were made. Good thing about trucks, is that you have less interior to work with, compared to cars. Dodge: Performance Division
Try finding a good used 72-80 pickup. Guys that own them dont want to give them up. Revolutionary roomy cab with the gas tank under the bed and not behind the seat. And polypropylene rotationally molded tank not steel. Took Chevy and ford another ten years to catch on to that.
I thought I knew a lot about Dodge trucks, but I did not know about the Camper Super Special. That had to be a hot truck to say the least. Thanks for the history lesson. 😊
@waggitnshaggit6592 being from Arizona I too like the palomino package with the southwest styling. I was raised in a diehard chevy family but bought my first vehicle at 14. It was an 81 ram 150 royal se with the 225 slant 6 I put nearly 200k on it by the time I could legally drive it then it got stolen and ended up in Mexico
Also, remarking your point for the Dakota vs 454SS That’s what you call power to weight ratio, the Dakota is around 2900lbs vs 4,073lbs, it’s contemporary from GM would have been the Typhoon or cyclone, which was beating Ferraris, Lamborghinis, Bugattis, Corvettes, Ford Gt40s.
Well, careful with the numbers... The '92 Dakota was a bit heavier than 2900 lbs! The V6 short bed (my dad bought one new) without A/C was heavier than that!. The Typhoons and Cyclones were fast, basically the Buick GN drive train! The Dakota was NOT advertised as a "hot rod", but as "best towing and HP weight" in it's class. Also, meeting a 5.2 Dakota on your way to work was a everyday occurance. Meeting a Typhoon was a bigfoot sighting! 😉😉
They where a bunch of 1985s wt the 302 heads slipped out wt 175lbs of compression that would run low 10s in the 1/8th wt a two barrel from the factory! I put 400,000 miles on one b4 it let me dwn due to a cracked head! I guess dodge had alot of 85 short blocks they used & just threw the 86 heads on!
In 64 chevy’s had more than a 283, you had the option for a 348 big block, 409 big block, 327 small journal small block, 283 small journal small block. That’s why the 426 wedge stood no real chance unless you compared them against the 6 cylinders and 283.
LOL,nice try.. Chevy/GMC only had the 160 hp 283 V8....Dodge blew that away with the 426 Wedge!! Nice try buddy,no 348 and no 409 in pick up trucks by GM.. GM had in Chevrolet C40/GMC and bigger those were the big heavy duty trucks/busses not pick ups!!! They had in C40 and bigger trucks the 348 and 409's the 348 truck engine had 220 hp 325 torque they had a 409 with 252 hp and 390 torque! They did not have the car version 409 or 348! Remember those were heavy duty trucks farm grain trucks and busses! NOT pick up trucks... So run your 409 252 hp huge C40 or C 60 against a half ton truck and even a 1964 half ton Dodge slant 6 would destroy you in a 60's 409 powered C 40 truck. If you are confused look up a 2022 Chevrolet Silverado 4500 that would be the exact comparison of a 409 powered truck GM had in the mid 60's..or search the C 40 of 1964 etc. So take a new Chevy 4500 and that would not beat a 6 cyl half ton RAM 1500 in a race..You are comparing a heavy duty 409 truck from 65 to a half to muscle truck in 1964 with 365 hp! Chevy didnt make a 409 in a half ton or even 3/4 ton or one tone! Never in a pick up! Chevy C10..C20..C30 only had a 160 hp 283 V8 option,thats it!!! End of story! I'd love to find one of those. Just a small correction, the CSS package didn't include the 426W. It included Dart seats, Polara center console, and chrome front bumper. That package was $235. The $1200 HPP (High Performance Package) included the 426 HP engine, 6k tach, traction bars from the Imperial, and dual exhaust. All were very rare!
Correct, I said that wrong, the CSS 200 dollar option didn't include the 426. I do believe the CSS could be bought with all the engines, even the 426. Either way, very cool trucks!!!!
Well I own a true to life 1979 Lil Red. Thing about the warlocks and Lil Red's it's in the VIN. And as common to mopar low production numbers. The '78 they built 1,978 for '79 they doubled the number. Mine cost just under 9K. And no there ware never any Warlocks built prior to '78.
Ive had my 85 d150 for a year now, 90,000 miles, my favorite vehicle ive ever owned, rather drive it than my 400 hp 2011 mustang, replaced timing chain after it lost power this spring, power came back but now its just a little off, misses a little when its cold in the morning, no vacum leaks, carb seems fine, could i have just old worn out heads, or could it be my distributor? i replaced my plugs and wires and cap and rotor, adjusted my air gap on pick up coil, maybe try adjusting my rockers? thanks for the history lesson, good stuff
Now, as to factory performance, you could buy a Big 10 Chevy that outperformed the little red express, or a GMC truck aka Beau James special, which was a Undercover hero of sports style trucks, dodge was just known for making theirs known and out there, GM and the Oval port 454s in the 74-80 range, were equal if not a tenth quicker than the LRE (little red express) in the quarter.
Well, could be true but it's not how it's written by any of them that tested the factory trucks. A lot of cool trucks in the 60's and 70's by both Ford and Chevy! The 460 Ford was no slouch either, my brother owned a factory 460 Ford truck 2wd.
