I’m an Ohtani fan and I’ve been following him since 2018. It was actually from a Jeff Passan article that intrigued me about this anomaly of a player. So because I was an Ohtani fan, I naturally started rooting for the Angels (and Mike Trout who I still love). Now that Ohtani is with the Dodgers, I’ll be following his career there. It is quite a change of pace to be following a club that knows what it’s doing and emphasizes winning vs.. well, the Angels. For Angels fans, I hope Arte sells.

Exactly the same experience for me. including the Jeff Passan article that got me curious about Ohtani. I became an Ohtani,Trout, Angels fan. I didn't like the Dodgers at all...but now I'm a Dodgers fan. :-) Still rooting for Mike Trout though.

My GF who doesn't watch sports and hasn't even seen Ohtani play asked me if she can get an Ohtani jersey. The buying fans thing is insanely real. This man's persona is a whole business.

That's a great point about creating lifelong fans. Also, I didn't realize until you said it that the Red Sox had taken over the Dominican Republic by signing that incredible trio of Pedro, Manny, and Papi. Thanks for continuing to make the two best baseball podcasts in the world. It's a pretty remarkable achievement, Mr. Carrabis. Bravo, sir.

I agree. I have been a Red Sox fan all my life. I would prefer that the Red Sox are the team signing the best players. However, the Dodgers are killing it. Good for them. It's a great organization in a great town.

I’ve never pay attention to American baseball until Shohei Ohtani came to MLB. I had dropped NBA and NFL off my sport and only watch MLB baseball and it’s been 4 years now!

You have a team spending money, and fans are upset 😂 Then you have teams whose owners don't spend money and have very low attendance (one team is moving to LV because of this reason 😂), and fans are pissed.

With Ohtani Deferring so much money, does that not make him a partial owner of The Dodgers in essence???Will the Dodgers owe Ohtani more Money than Magic Johnson and Billy Jean King, who are Partial Owners of The Dodgers, have Invested in the Dodgers??? Sasaki going to Superteam LA dynasty unless they get outbid significantly. Scherzer and Verlander for mets in 2023 was a bust. Both aging 40 year old got 43M each per year. 25 year old stud Yamamoto would have been worth the same money easily.

The Japanese pitchers need adjustment period and usually don’t do good on the first year. So, you have to wait till 2025 to see the Dodgers work in full dynamic.

Which pitchers needed an adjustment period? Darvish didn't. Maeda didn't. Senga didn't. Kikuchi is probably only one that sucked their first year. lol

They usually need an adjustment period, but it’s not necessarily a whole year. Just depends. Look at Senga’s first half of ‘23 compared to his second half. So much is different: very different ball, different mound, different schedule/workload, different workplace, different food, different culture, different life.

The problem with the Sox is not that they don't want to spend, it's the lack of direction and elite talent on the team. Devers, promising players like Casas and Bello without any sustained success just yet. Rest are placeholders. nobody wants to play for a team not even close to contention.

@@devonwatt2194 Spending isn't the issue. it's not producing talent in the minors to fill holes on the major league roster via promotions or trades. They just don't have many pieces other teams would want to give up a Burnes, Luzardo or Framber for, and zero star power like Shohei, Mookie, Freeman to recruit Yamamoto. Direction should be to get placeholders and tank for picks, and trade any assets you have at deadline if there is a market. There isn't a quick fix for this team, as it stands now. Should add trade guys at deadline if they have value but aren't a factor when the team is good again. Fungible relievers having good years. those are guys the team should cash in on.

@@majikthise4228 this all started with Mookie. If you buck up and pay Mookie, Xander probably becomes cheaper because he’d be more likely to want to stay. They also should have paid Nate, I get that he kind of screwed himself but the Sox also played that super petty. After he chose to test free agency they basically just said fuck you and never made him another offer. If you retain those 3 guys Boston stays a good free agent destination and you don’t have to rely on emptying out your farm system to get players.

@@devonwatt2194 The only one I would have kept of those was Mookie, but Dombrowski making bad bets on Price and Sale forced the trade of Mookie to get rid of Price. But all that doesn't matter, at this point. They haven't drafted and developed much in the minors in recent years. Some promising guys like Teel, Anthony and Mayer, but no pitching prospects at all. It's essential to sustain a competitive team. Can't spend money for every spot on the roster.
