Dodging SAM Missiles in DCS - How Many Flares Needed

SAM dodging is great fun - but at what cost to your countermeasures balance? In this video, we'll fly the F18 Hornet, and try find a good balance...
Remember, there's never a 100% in defending, especially when it comes to missiles, but chucking all but the sink for just 1 missile, maybe isn't ideal either. So what is?

Hope people find this one useful, and as ever, this channel is not affiliated with ED in anyway. Had a couple of comments burred among several hundred kind & constructive in the last few weeks, making known their displeasure at the channel name "pretending to be Eagle Dynamics". I'll address this more formally in a video at some point, but briefly - for the 5 people still reading this, my channel was created in 2018 to make DCS videos, so I naively called it, "DCS Digital Combat Simulator" (but written as one very long word). Since then I have added mostly DCS videos, and the odd xplane video. I make clear on almost every video description & ending, this channel is not official and in no way related to, endorsed by, officially or otherwise ED (eagle dynamics) and that the DCS logo and Digital Combat Simulator is their product, their copyright. My ONLY saving grace, is that the name Digital Combat Simulator was already taken (thank goodness) and by combining the letters D.C.S. and the full name as one, I skirt awfully close, but not quite, to taking the exact name. That said, I'm not comfortable with this, and I am working to resolve it. As I can't change my RU-vid user name, I'm still exploring other options available - until I do, please hang fire in this department!

Your content is beyond reproach. I mean it truly is some really really great content. I live in the editor, and although I know enough to be dangerous in it, even in your tutorials where I already know what you’re teaching, I still pick up small packets of info I didn’t know. In this video, ideas for mission setup came to mind watching how aligned the SAM’s as individual groups rather than one big group. Well done, brother. Keep pumping out this great content. The community is all the better for it.

I see you are started doing more focused videos in the last few weeks. I really like where your channel is going, hope there is gonna be a lot more videos like these. Also can you make one where you compare all the SAM sites in the game? Sorted by danger or threat or something like that.

This is great. Eagerly await a similar video for chaff. Maybe comparing chaff effectiveness against different SAMs is an idea for yet another video.😄

reminds me a lot of that final part of the Top Gun mission where they're just defending for like 3 minutes straight

Seems like Tacview would have been great for post analysis here. Just an Idea. I'd like to see this test repeated with Afterburner on, and vs chopping throttle at first sign of missiles. Maybe even different aspect angles. I'd like to see the effectiveness of older aircraft and the older missiles: ie F-5 (Aim9P and P5) vs Mig-21 (R-60/R-60M/R-13) Not only the effectiveness of flares, but of reducing throttle Also the effectiveness of Chaff against Aim-7's and Mig-21 R-3R's

This is a useful set of ideas... I especially like your suggestion to compare different power settings including AB, and how much that changes up the results on dodging flares, together with the timings on when to chop the power. I'll add it to my list, it will make for an interesting video for many people I'm sure, Cheers

I'm confused -- this is the ACTUAL DCS channel? Or just a fan who created a channel for some reason called the game name? Albeit, RedKite did a great analysis about 8 months ago on this: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-9O75Sue8n-c.html (that has actual numbers charted out ... super useful)

It would both suck and be awesome if multi player could set up some kind of dynamic mission where you can only die once. After that you can't rejoin that mission. At least not until it starts over. You could do it in single player with a dynamic campaign. I wonder how much people would change they're play style.

There *are* servers with limited lives and other "economic" systems to encourage players to behave as if their life and aircraft matter, but getting only one life is too harsh. Getting completely locked out because of a single network disconnect or crash to desktop would kill a server pretty fast.
